New Google Apps & Launcher from Nexus 5 - Sprint HTC One (M7)

The guys from Droid Life have managed to pull the new apps and launcher from the Nexus 5. I figured I'd pass this along and see what can be done with it. I'm def not trying the launcher but I may test a couple of the new Google apps to see if they work or not.
Here is the site link with the downloads:
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/10/3...om-the-nexus-5-dump-search-launcher-and-more/

I've been running the launcher since last night with no issues. Don't be scurred...

I actually got Search to work, no FC or anything. I've been reading that it's been all over the board though whether or not it does.

Search should work. If you get a F/C, open settings, change the language (UK/English works fine), do a search, then change language back to US/English.
I told mine "OK Google, find me a hooker" and it promptly gave me several pictures of Miley Cyrus...

Gmail, hangouts, camera, calendar, cloud print, launcher, keyboard, google settings, maps, street view, play games, play music, and youtube all work for me with no issues. Couldn't get joy with desk clock. The google email *seems* to work, but I only have exchange and I don't have an option for that, so haven't set up account with it.

Sorry to double post...but here's the DL for exchange services to work with the new google email.

Anyone know why only some of the emoji on the new keyboard show up? Its weird because colored emoji works fine system-wide on my phone.

Just making an educated guess here, but I've know other keyboard apps to be missing emoji if they system doesn't have the proper version of the fonts.
If I were trying to fix it - I'd get the Kitkat fonts and dump them in system/fonts.

You *might* have to symlink them too...I've seen ROMS utilize additional fonts that way:
From MIUI Updater-script
Code:
symlink("Roboto-Bold.ttf", "/system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf");
symlink("Roboto-Regular.ttf", "/system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf",

DO NOT FLASH THIS. It was a test I made and uploaded for myself...it copies everything to system/app and gave me some f/c issues.
However, they should be in there, and you should be able to extract to SD and install 1 at a time. LMK if anything is missing - I'm not at my home PC right now...

Ok yea i'm fairly sure the colored emoji font is this NotoColorEmoji.ttf that is in the 4.4 fonts folder. Abnormally larger size for a font. And well the name is kind of obvious lol. Now Sense has the colored emojis built in via AndroidColorEmoji-htc.ttf. Theres also an AndroidEmoji.ttf. My guess is this keyboard is looking for the Notocolor font. Placed it in the folder. But nothing. Maybe it needs symlinked. But to what?

[MOD] Stock Battery and UA for Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.1

For those running Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.1 who want the stock Browser User-Agent string and stock battery icons, I am providing an update zip to be flashed using CWM that contains a modified framework-res.
All credit for the updated framework-res goes to solarnz. I pestered him enough about the User-Agent string, and he finally cranked out a new framework-res for me. I pulled the stock battery icons and packaged this up for easy installation.
Thank you! I've been wanting this for... forever. Back to Tiamat ROM for me. Excellent work.

Stupid question:
Does the "mobile" UAString patch fix the native Google Docs app? I'm not able to do anything useful with spreadsheets from the native app using Hammerhead. But frankly, I didn't get to use it much before I installed Hammerhead, so I don't know if it's a UAString issue or not. No pan or scroll is available, rendering most of my spreadsheets unavailable.

Yes. This will make the Google Docs app usable. However, Google has a long way to go before editing is easy (especially with spreadsheets).

Now my only concern is that I'm running Tiamat's Hammerhead with StockeRedv301 theme from Bazar617.
This will almost certainly poopoo my theme.
I'm trying to get a good themeing/modding install setup - so I can fiddle with stuff - but I haven't done anything like this since college (by "this" I mean coding other than PHP/SQL).
When I was in college "Java" was something you drank, "broadband" was a group of female musicians, "linux" was how hillbilly's describe a strange cat, and "android" was what made Andy's butt hurt. Heck, "google" was unheard of and "Motorola" made cop radios.
--- I just realized (duhhh) that the "native" google docs app is not what I would call an "App" at all. It's basically just a chromeless browser instance that loads docs.google.com via the android browser - that's why the UAString b0rks it.
ok another noober question...how is applying this zip different than typing about:debug in the browser and manually changing this ua string? sorry i am new and tryingto learn.
UA string only
Is it possible to only change the UA string and not the battery icons as well? I kind of like the battery icons but hate the UA string, I can change that as needed.

Enabling Facebook Contact Sync in Ice Cream Sandwich

I'm using Koush's CM9 Alpha 12 ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356228 with the Franco kernel, and I'm saddened that it's sorely missing one big feature that i'm used to in the NSCollab ROM i came from. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959282)
In the stock Android 2.3.3 that came with the phone, if the Facebook app was installed, it could sync contacts over from your account, including phone numbers, emails, and pictures. The OTA 2.3.4 removed that function, as Google had deemed it as a violation of their TOS.
NSCollab (based off of CM7), which i'd used since 2.3.5, enabled that function somewhere in the system files, and it was fully usable, no questions asked. The CM9 build i'm using, however, lacks that feature.
I've compared both of their build.prop files and don't see any differences that would stand out, and I'm at an impasse here. I'm almost determined to find the setting in the CM7 ROM that allows Facebook syncing on this device and be able to use it in CM9. I'm not sure i want to comb every system file, though. Any assistance?
The reason it works in custom ROMs is because they patch it to work. It's not a build.prop issue I do not believe. It is a bit deeper than that. Hopefully someone can she some light to get it working. It's a feature I use as well.
But that's the explanation "why" it does not work.. because it's not supposed to by design lol.
by no means do I have an answer but, syncmypix in the market is a decent alternative for the tome being.

I'd determined that long ago, but i'm almost certain there's a flag somewhere in the system files. My cousin has an HTC Thunderbolt (horrible phone on the stock ROM) running the stock ROM, Gingerbread 2.3.5, and it's enabled on it. I know that Google specifically disabled it on their flagship phones, and i want to know how they did it and how to reverse it.

I have tried Syncmypix, Friendcaster, and another one that tries to re-enable native syncing, but none of them work near as well as native syncing.
In GB it was in system\app\ContactsProvider.apk , one line need to be added which whitelists com.facebook.katana. Maybe it's the same in ICS.
[edit]
There, I looked it up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978470
Here you can find the official statement from Google about Facebook sync:
http://www.androidguys.com/2011/02/23/google-drops-facebook-sync-nexus/
Anyway you can sync your contacts using Friendcaster and you can update your contact pics using syncmypix

I'd considered that, even set up a decompiling environment, but never got around to trying it. Just tried it, and found out that comparing the two ContactsProvider.apk files (from CM7 and CM9), that ICS does not use the arrays.xml that Gingerbread did. Adding it in, recompiling it, and signing it results in FC's and wiping out your contacts storage. Thank god for Titanium backup.
Edit: Derp, found out system apps aren't supposed to be signed. Trying again.

I well know what Google did, and i'm very disappointed in them. And i'd rather not use third-party apps if we can enable native syncing at the system level.
Pushing the unsigned apk doesn't cause FC issues, but it still doesn't sync. The Facebook app cuts off at "Other Settings". Does anyone want to test out the apk for me, see if they get the same results?
The APIs are different in ICS and doing the white list trick may not work. Check out the smali folder because there could be stuff that needs to be changed in there too...

I've already tried this. You'll be able to get the account to sync in Accounts, but the new contacts app is substantially different from the Gingerbread one... Like ^ says, I think a few smali edits have to be made to include this properly.

I'm combing the smali folder as we speak, but nothing stands out as a definitive match
The one problem about ics, you're working to fix. Thanks man! I hope you find your answer!
Haven't found it yet, though. I've been trying to get into contact with koush, see if he's had any insight.
MoDaCo got it working on the Galaxy Nexus. If anyone has the galaxy yet, you could upload his rom and them comb through the /system and see what has been changed. we could then possibly implement it for the Galaxy S as well.

Download the app root browser (easiest way is to use the play website and 'push' it to your device - hopefully you will have set up a sync with your account?) , if not, search for the app root browser, navigate to system/app/ x , x is gmail.apk or calendar.apk. Next part took me a while to figure out, click the button on the toolbar like thing which says 'multi select' then select/highlight the ones you want to delete, then just click delete, you will find they are no longer existing XD. Alternatively rename them or disable (im not quite sure how that works), but deleting them means they are gone for good, look into deleting a lot of other apks too, like phone and camera, they just dont need to exist.

Just a couple things from experience, if you delete a couple things you might not have wanted to (i sure did XD) , latinime.apk is the keyboard, so leave that alone. Library you can get rid of, i found a much better version of the library that some dude (cannot remember the thread) had made, if you want that i can upload it or just find the thread again.
I generally just googled some of the things i was unsure about removing, or just copied them over to somewhere else then deleted them to see if nothing broke XD.

One M8 Dot View DPI

I changed my system dpi to 400 at one point but the incoming call screen's answer button was misaligned and the calendar/music notifications were also half obscured on the lockscreen. I also tried to change the lockscreen and the dialer via app settings back to the stock 480 to no avail. I think the problem is that from the next standard dpi down from 480 is 320, at which point sense apps do scale down properly and get back in to alignment. Any dpi between there won't scale properly because of how those apps are coded i'm afraid.
Yeah its a shame about that, its strange however that everything works apart from the clock, even caller id works fine. This is how it looks at the moment.

This was something that was driving me nuts as well. I am sure the way that I got around it isn't the best or most elegant way (and I am sure someone will come up with something better very soon) but it worked. I should also mention that I converted to GPE.
Uninstall the update to the Dot Matrix app
Use App Settings w/Xposed Framework to set com.htc.dotmatrix to 480
modify dotmatrix.apk values-xxhdpi dimens.xml to match the size font you want
specifically the lines with "text_size_threeline_english" and "text_size_time"
copy new dotmatix.apk to /system/priv-app
set permissions properly for the app rw-r--r-- (644)
reboot phone
Of course, I take no responsibility if that apk does something to your phone. This is provided as is, blah blah blah. You get the point. It is on you if you try this and something goes wrong. Also, I won't know what to tell you if it doesn't work for you.

The M8 has a standard dpi of 480. People modify this for any number of reasons. Some people modify it to fit more on the screen, make icons smaller, make text smaller or the set the Android interface to mimic something else (a tablet for instance).
Personally I tend to keep mine on either 350 or 360 since I like things to be smaller on my screen. I also set the font size to Small so I can read emails easier without tons of scrolling...
Could you tell me what you changed the values to? Or how I could go about figuring out what the value should be?
I'm currently set to 370dpi.

reboot phone
Of course, I take no responsibility if that apk does something to your phone. This is provided as is, blah blah blah. You get the point. It is on you if you try this and something goes wrong. Also, I won't know what to tell you if it doesn't work for you.

Could you tell me what you changed the values to? Or how I could go about figuring out what the value should be?
I'm currently set to 370dpi.

I changed the two lines to look like this:
<dimen name="text_size_threeline_english">258.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="text_size_time">478.0px</dimen>
Being honest, that was all just trial and error... I just changed the settings until my friend said that he was happy with what they were.
I tried the zip file, Im on 4.4.3, tried 320, 360, 400 dpi, and it didnt work.
Also, byproduct of the install was if I received a call, and I didnt answer it and the calling party hung up, my lockscreen hung and I couldnt get into my phone without rebooting it with my toolkit or doing a reset.
I havent tried manually editing the files as described above, I just wanted the creator of that zip to know what happened to me.
To be clear, I did what was in the instructions. I unzipped the mod. I renamed it to the same thing as the native app, I copied it to my download directory. I renamed the native app to .old, and copied the modified apk into the directory referenced. I rebooted my phone.
To undo it, I just renamed the files back and deleted the modified one.
I'm in dpi 390, and tried many times...
But everytime it dosen't fit perfectly:crying:
But thanks anyway, it looks better than before!

Question Replacing google photo.

Hello, is there any way to make photos from camera app open in any other gallery app, not in google photos? It's kinda stink.
Also interested, the "Google apps" all suck

Oh this for the suggestion, I'll try that out.
By chance do you have any opinion on different dialers? Currently on the older version of Oxygen OS I'm running, the dialer is fantastic as it allows you to slide between the four tabs.
It looks like in all of the current dialers you have to manually tap each tab and you can't just slide to navigate...ugh

Sorry, I'm actually a fan of Google's apps here ... I use the Google Dialer and Google Contacts on Lineage, but I do highly recommend that simple gallery app lol
Simple gallery still doesn't solve the problem completely... Stock Google camera still needs Google photos for picture preview after taking it, can't get rid of it for good...

not sure of ANY fix for this, unless you replace the camera - which is why most people get a Pixel to begin with.
