Bought my N5 at carphonewarehouse in the UK today and very happy. USB Otg working fine (tested with ant+ garmin uploader), and USB Ethernet also working. The Ethernet required root to run 'netcfg eth0 up' followed by 'netcfg eth0 dhcp'. Some apps complain and won't use it, but others are happy. Fantastic news that the Ethernet kernel modules are there and ready to use - top marks to Google. (I'm using the common asix chipset USB Ethernet adapter and a random Otg cable from amazon)
Awesome news
Is your chipset Asix AX88179? Any chance for a link?

Any one tried the meenova.com accessory? Does it work out of the box or requires root?
What do people use this for? I know it has to do with hooking up other USB devices to it but I am just curious how this can be used that excited people. I don't know much about it.
Info page states.... Google: Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 (2012 Original & 2013 New), Nexus 10; all require third-party software or device being rooted

One use case I can think of is when you are on holiday, your SD card for your camera is filling up and you need somewhere to save those pictures without a laptop.
Or just to carry around more files than your phone has storage for, like films for watching on a long flight,
+1. I use it for extra storage, and also for usb peripherals such as ant+ to get runs off my garmin.
For info, here's the script I'm running when I want to use ethernet. Plug the cable in, run this as root, then manually disabled wireless LAN.
#!/bin/sh
netcfg eth0 up
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.200 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 dev eth0
setprop net.dns1 192.168.1.1
ping -c 1 192.168.1.1
netcfg
Is that Unix code?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm no Unix expert, but it's a fairly simply Unix script. The ifconfig line has wrapped though on the paste, so watch that if you use the above.

Tx for the feedback.
Will Google Play Music map a USB drive to play music locally or we'll need other music players?
You can do this with Google play music - you have to map a symbolic link from the data cache folder to a location on the external storage. Search about - plenty of links to how-to.
Does this mean the N5 can read from external storage, without root and everything?
Not sure about not needing root, but take a look at Stickmount. Root is very quick and easy - always the first thing I do with a new phone!

USB OTG with Stickmount
I can confirm that USB OTG works with Stickmount if you root using Chainfire's root image.
If you do not root using Chainfire's method, the mounting service may not be able to run correctly and basically just hangs there.

I have the meenova adapter and can confirm that it works, requires root. You're gonna need an app that will mount the drive, for that I use stick mount.

Probably a dumb question but can we connect the NC to a fixed line (Cat 5) internet connection. Sometimes no wifi but a wire connection is available.
Of course would need some type of USB to Cat 5 connector.
Does such a thing exist?
I don't know if you'll find what you're looking for, but i'm not ruling out the option.
Meantime, if you can access a cat5 line, and you're looking at buying hardware anyway, why not get a wireless access point?
(I am curious to see if you can do what you are asking, and I don't want this thread to die on the 'get an access point' cop out)
CAT5 Ethernet? Sure, wait until B&N redesign the NOOK and do expect another inch thicker, still want it?
I have a motorhome sitting beside my house and cannot get a wifi signal so I ran a cat5 cable out there to a cradelpoint wifi unit so I now have wifi through the coach.

Assuming a driver is available in the kernel for the Ethernet chipset in question, you *might* be able to use something like the Wii USB-to-Ethernet adapter combined with a USB type converter. I've no idea at all what it will do to the normal network stack, but it's _theoretically_ possible.

FWIW, I've seen some no-name Android tablets that have a dongle which provides USB ports and an RJ45 jack for a wired ethernet connection.. Does kinda defeat the purpose of a tablet though..

Not at all, it would be great to be able to use my Nook to configure Routers and program firmware, maybe even to use the Nook for some tethering. I would be able to finally get rid of my battery sucking, heat factory of a UMPC.
If anyone finds a way to get a usb Ethernet adapter working with the Nook please so share.

Didn't even think about it that way.
I know they got Ubuntu running on the NC (Not sure how well). Surely there is a wired usb nic that supports Ubuntu. I'm thinking that might be the best way.
I just bought my NC, should be here in a few days. I might just have to play with this..
What about Dalingrin's Nook Tweeks app? Using 'USB Settings > USB Host Mode' can we possibly attach a USB NIC?
I have not played with the USB Host Mode just yet, but I know I got excited when I saw it
Just wanted to link to [webcam support] USB Host support that YOU can try (now in nightlies)...some interesting discussion going on over there too....
Not too sure if I understood correctly your current setup, hopefully I won't recommend you something you have already done/thought about.
For the moment, a quick an easy way would be to plug a wireless router at the end of the network cable and then setup the wireless network. You could then connect to that wireless router with your nook.
Basically, it would look like this (inline text doesn't make a good illustration, but it's better than nothing)...
Router 1 ------(network cable)---------Router 2)))))))(wifi wave)))))))Nook
Sure you will need to setup the router correctly, but it's still very easy to do.
I'd love the feature to use my usb ethernet adapter as the main connection for chromecast as it'd help with local streaming and maybe eliminate wireless latency issues
Well, it's been said there is HEC support to get HDMI Ethernet channel. Unfortunately, after a full afternoon of searching, you can't just make a cable. It's a separate protocol and you'd need a chip to translate the RJ 45 into HEC.
Not only that, I seriously doubt those chips are available to purchase in quantities less than 1000
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Yeah HEC seems a bit overkill...
USB Ethernet adapter seems slightly more accessible, though only certain chipsets would be supported, and that's assuming there's enough RAM/storage and USB OTG doesn't dumb-down the USB connection any.
For example, my Toshiba Thrive (AT100) has support for a certain vendor's USB Ethernet adapter built into the stock ROM. Very convenient to maximum network bandwidth when I'm using it as a secondary display via iDisplay.
Well, dddtg and I were having the conversation yesterday and it seems the eth0 is supposed to be for HEC

as mentioned, me and tchebb believe the chromecast has built in support for HEC networking, as not only does the hardware support it, but a ethernet interface is active on each chromecast with a unique MAC address. We currently do not have the hardware to test it, so it can not be confirmed at this time.
As for USB Ethernet support with a OTG cable, at this time it is not possible. A few things would be required first for it to work:
Enable the USB Interface in the Stock OS with a custom kernel
have the proper driver compiled and added to the kernel, or loaded as a module
Make sure that all binaries in the chromecast could utilize the wired interface
The first part would not be too bad, but the issue is on part 2 and 3. There are many different manufacturers for USB Ethernet Adapters, and to compile and add every single one of their drivers would take loads of space and time.
As for part 3, all of googles binaries, while most open source, require propitiatory binaries that only Marvell can hand out, and as we don't have them if any of the applications are directly linked to the wired interface, there is no way we could easily force them to use a wired interface.
So tl;dr is it possible? yes. Is it easy or worth the work? not really. It would be best to just use HEC if its enabled.
Marvell?? Oh god

Well if a full HEC support was realized it could allow the Chromecast to serve as the Internet connection for all other Network aware devices that are HEC compliant in the home Entertainment system....
OR (and much more likely) Would allow Chromecast to use a wired connection from one of the other devices in the Home Entertainment system as it's primary Network access point.
The goal of HEC is suppose to be that only one device in the HDMI chain actually needs to be connected to the Net, The rest would all connect via HDMI instead.
But if you ask me it's probably a pipe dream to ever see it reach it's intended goal.

I don't have the Tab 3 8.0 but on other platforms I target, I use 2 dongles based on RTL8187B chipsets they do both monitor, and injection, they are very well supported and at most all you require is the kernel modules for your platform. I built them out-of-tree with minimal work. I am sure their are many more chipsets others prefer but I use what I know works for me. a little googling will show you what dongles contain this chipset, I pulled the covers off mine to integrate them or I would get you the specific ones I use with great success.

Thanks but and this my fault for not stating it but I was more talking about having USB otg connected and then connect a USB external WiFi chip to that. The wifi chip I have is the Alfa AWUS036NHA.
So what I want to know is if I go buy a USB otg adapter will it work. As far as I know the Alfa AWUS036NHA has support for Linux(drivers) and android is linux . so would I need these drivers and if so how do I install them? And anther thing is, if this works and is recognized how would I put the chip into monitor mode(with terminal eliminator, could use other methods but terminal eliminator is preferred)?

So far I have been unsuccessful in mounting an external OTG drive with my N6. Has anyone been able to use an OTG drive? If so, can you help me figure out why I cant seem to get mine (multiple drives) to be recognized? I don't have an issue with it being recognized in other devices with Lollipop.

I don't think the stock kernel supports OTG. Just wait till someone releases a custom kernel that supports it (hopefully).
What about mhl adapters? Chromecast works great for screen mirroring but sometimes its easier and more convenient to use mhl.
Everything I've seen, mhl and slimport are confirmed not supported
If you have to do it ....chromecast is 25$ at Walmart black Friday sale

Confirmed working for me as well. If you're not rooted, you can try "Nexus Media Importer". That's worked for me in the past on devices that were bone stock.
I was able to use ES file explorer to see USB content. Just swipe right, press local and it should show a USB device. This was on an unrooted N6

I got a flash drive working via USB OTG, but only through ES File Explorer, Solid Explorer didn't recognize the flash drive. Has to be formatted as FAT32 or NTFS, exFAT didn't work.
I'm going to give Stickmount a try to see if other apps will recognize flash drives.
I'm using Stickmount with Root Explorer. Works fine with an exFAT formatted usb thumb drive.

Hi guys,
Does the N6 need a Y-cable for extra power like the Nexus 4 did or it's a simple USB to microUSB connection? I have such a Y-cable from my N4 period and I was wondering whether I need to connect the extra power or not. Reason is I don't seem to get the usb otg working fully:
So, I can see the drive's contents through ES File Explorer but not through MortPlayer (folder music player). Whatismore, the drive does not show up in "Storage" after my SD as it did in my Nexus 4 so I am guessing it's not fully "mounted" ? My main reason behind using usb otg is playing music from my usb flash but my favorite player (MortPlayer) does not seem to pick up the drive as it did on the Nexus 4.
I am rooted and I use Sticmount to mount the flash drive... any ideas?
Hi folks,
Just bought an Ethernet OTG adapter.
My phone recognize the device but it doesn't give me any settings to configure the standard Ethernet protocol.
With 'ifconfig' in terminal emulator I can see the correct port (eth0) but any modifications (e.g. 'ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.4 netmask 255.255.255.0") obviously lock me out with a "permission denied".
I know for sure that the otg device have DHCP capabilities, but I need to set a static IP address in a link local region with 169.254.X.X/16 address and 255.255.0.0 netmask.
I'm connecting directly to a specific device that need this parameters.
Thank you

The major problem is that there isn't even the "ethernet" settings in the settings page of the phone.
And as said, configuring eth0 through terminal emulator, requires root.

Hi guys !
I just wanted to know for a Huawei P20 pro, is there a possibility of configuring the ethernet IP address and Netmask when connecting to RJ45 adapter ?. It works fine when connecting to the router. I just want to connect it to a car's OBD port and I have to set the IP and Netmask manually to accomplish that. I noticed that, eathernet configuration is available on Samsung and OnePlus phones but it's not with Huawei. We have only one option which is selecting RNDIS (eathernet) in devleloper options.

Dear,
There's no chance of configuring the Ethernet IP address on P20 pro, even if it's rooted which is very hard to get bootloader unlock code nowadays. My need for configured Ethernet connection is similar to yours. I wanted for Bootmod3 and XHP flashtool. So, i gave up and bought cheap Samsung (A12) and it did the job. I'd suggest you to go for Samsung of a recent model. Make sure it supports Ethernet before buying which can be found on Settings>connections>more connection settings. Its a better option than buying the wireless adaptor, because you'll be able access all the BMW tuning and coding apps from one device. Knowing that, the price is almost the same.
In case you bought Samsung of USB-C 2.0, note that, USB-C 3.1 to RJ-45 adaptor will not be recognised by the phone. It has to be 2.0
Phones that have the option of configuring ethernet IP address that i know of:
-Samsung
-I phone
All the best !
I have the same problem. I bought an adapter and I cannot set the ip of the adapter statically. The same adapter on the Samsung phone has the same option as in the screenshots. Someone handled it? I am using a p40 pro where root is impossible. I support Samsung without any problems: /
