Dear friends,
I am used to so many options from custom roms that I went back from 4.4 to my 4.3 NAND backup..
I made a list of the things that keep me using custom roms (SlimBean ATM):
* Volume rocker wake.
* Color control (Stock colors are too washed out).
* Brightness control (Stock auto brightness is too bright).
* Battery optimizations (Lower maximum frequency, cores online, etc).
* Easy way to change 2G/3G
* Easy way to enable or disable mobile data
* Easy way to enable or disable rotation.
* Easy way to reboot into recovery.
What about you? What options keep you flashing stock ROMS?
Can I get that with exposed framework? I am not used to that but have heard a lot about it.
Personally I like the stability of the stock rom but maybe one day I will try paranoid android or MUIU, or perhaps cynogenmod, who knows? Sometimes I fancy it but once you flash a rom, getting it back to a completely unmodified state is damn hard.

no it's not. you just run a .bat file and everything is back to stock. all the factory images here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

It's really not hard. Maximum 5 minutes of work with any toolkit available for N4 and you can be just like out of the box.

or you could just nandroid backup your stock ROM and restore afterwards
anyways, nowadays custom ROMs are pretty much for tweaks you can use like the ones OP listed, it wasnt like that back in the pre-4.x days where lag was all over the place
maybe thats why i see more 'i still havent rooted my phone' users on xda these days

I don't really miss much custom roms. stock rom + circle battery mod + 4way boot + franco kernel (smoothness + colors) or stock + franco + gravitybox gives me everything I need.

except trinity kernel, which beat out faux kernel in the battery benchmarks thread
I use custom ROMs because they afford you a better level of customizability.
At the moment i'm using CM10.2 M1 as it has enough ways to customize it how you see fit without being burdened too much by useless extensions (useless for me, you are welcome to have a different opinion of course).
What I need most are the toggles in the statusbar-menu, as these are merely links in stock versions of Android, never could figure why Google didn't make these into real toggles.
I go custom rom for Battery, LTE and overall customizations. I also really like being able to backup my device with Titanium and automate with Tasker. Although I have been thinking lately about going back to stock so I can run a work email app that won't function on rooted devices.
I forgot also the dark theme (like SlimDark).. And the CM keyboard (with longpress in all Keys)
Xposed framework is awesome. Use it on stock rom, with a few modules to get every feature i need.

I really hated the nav buttons that's what kept me away for so long(plus I was on sprint) and I loved pie but now I'm used to the on-screen nav and with 4.4 it becomes even less of a issue.

nav bottoms will be a problem to me no matter how transparent they are they are still there and take too much space on the screen.
pie controls are so much better they are fast, responsive and very customizable
I really like the stock, except for the battery. I don't use my N4 that much which is a good thing because I don't think I've ever got much more than 4 hours on screen time. No matter what I do with my phone, screen on time is always constant at around 4 hours. By how much do you guys think I would be able to increase that if I used a custom rom? Battery is the only reason I would do that.
When people have a decent but skinned / laggy device (like s3) they try so hard to get a stock nexus experience... When people have a nexus they try so hard to get a different experience.. Pretty mad world

Well, I got my N7 rooted and flashed the Jr6 ROM immediately after. At the time, it seemed to be the most popular ROM around. However, over the past few days, I noticed that Glazed ROM seems to be gaining a lot of attention. Although it looks tempting, I'm a bit reluctant to go through the entire process of changing ROMs again. I'm very meticulous about how I setup my devices.
Anyone here has used both and can vouch for one of the other? It would be nice to get some reasons as to why you decided to stick with what you're currently on.
Thanks in advance guys...
I've used both. J6 is just phone mode. Which immediately didn't fly well with me. Glazed has a tablet mode and some neat options but they currently have some weird screen animations. I didn't care for it at all.
The rom I'm using and keep coming back to is EOS. It is in the Original Development forums and is great. They compile nightlies so it gets updated every few days with features and mods. I run in tablet mode which is just an option in settings. No reset required. Also has notification toggles which are awesome.
So I would recommend checking them out. I'm also running Morifcs Trinity kernel 41. Getting nice battery life. No issues.

Yes, you are the glazed have weird animations however they do have some cool added features. Themes, tablet mode, built-in USB otg support, over clocking etc but then I missed the original room and came back to stock room but of course rooted. Not a bad ROM though. I have not used JR6 so I don't know about it.

Jr6, the only problem i have with it is because of the navigation bar stay at the right side even when in landscape. it might be better for some usage but i often click home button when i play a game because of it. otherwise, it's a great ROM
glaze, i don't like the smaller navigation button, otherwise it offer good usability.
Pete ROM has a really good reputation across many devices, i used it in my nexus s and it's simply one of the best, stable, battery saver rom. if you like stock, you should try it.
EOS has most of those features. I'm using a Samsung Theme now. It also has a normal sized navigation bar.
Sorry but EOS is simply awesome on the N7. I like a dev that releases nightly build.

I'm looking for a phone to upgrade from my current HTC Desire HD. I started a couple of years ago with Sense, then reluctantly went to stock Android. Now I can't go back to Sense and a big reason is battery life. These smart phones after a year, it's all about reducing lag and increasing battery time.
So now I'm on an unofficial CM10.
Well if I get an HTC One, will I just install CM again? Is that what people do, or do you make use of HTC's software? I know how it's a personal preference, but I'm wondering if the latest Sense is so good people are sticking with it. Reviews say it's less bloat.
And if people are just going to a stock Android Rom, is it better to get this phone or the GS4 to load a stock Rom?

I rather like Sense 5. I came from CM10 on Sensation too and I'm happily living with Sense 5. It's simple and fast - virtually lag free. I've had crappy experiences like many of you with Sense 3.5 to 4.5, so this is a pleasant surprise. I even use blinkfeed rather often now. I plan to stay with Sense 5 custom roms for my One. Just try it, I don't think you'll miss AOSP/CM10 unless you're one of those religious types.

100% agreed. I came from AOKP on my S3 (I can't stand touchwiz). I purchased the One and absolutely love sense 5. I don't believe I'll switch back. Especially since some features won't work like the beats driver and I've also heard some flaws with the camera on AOSP ROMs.
If you are worried about battery, quite frankly you shouldn't be purchasing a mini computer. Battery life is great on this phone for how powerful it is. While at work I turn on Power Saver mode and have my data connections turned off on sleep mode. When I'm off 9 hours later I'm still at 70%. If I keep everything running I'm at about 20% by the end of the night when I plug it in.

Hmm.. not sure what greenify is, but I can tell you what Power Saver is. When turned on it conserves power by limiting the speed of the cpu, turns down screen brightness, disables haptic feedback, and disables data while on sleep mode. Pretty handy in my opinion. =)

I came from the N4 running CM 10.1 and I find too sense 5 a big surprise. It's running very smooth and battery life is quite the same with my N4. I plan on staying on stock and unrooted for a while.
Power saver is not like greenify, it reduces CPU speed and even brightness if the battery level is low.

from what i can tell,
greenify basically ensures that apps are fully unloaded when you lock your phone... keeps the naughty apps in line.
the htc power save option basically does the usual limit screen brightness as well as cpu, turn off haptic feedback and disables data during sleep mode.
the disabling of data is a little bit of an issue for me, since i use cerberusapp and it won't let me connect (obviously)
things still sync however no longer in real time (i think it enables data on a pre-defined interval to update sync).
the good news is that you can disable these options individually so yeah i have all the power save options enabled apart from data.
i too went from a cm10 device to sense 5. i'm loving the new fresh feel, however I'm missing the notification toggles badly.
Before the HTC One, I've never owned a HTC device before and therefore never used Sense before.
Before I got this phone, I checked out some of the reviews and even done research on previous HTC models just to learn a little bit more about HTC in general.
I'd honestly read a lot of bad reviews regarding previous iterations of Sense, with the main complaints being against Sense 4.
As I'm not the kind of guy who bases my decisions on reviews they didn't stop me wanting to get the One. Afterall, even if I didn't like Sense 5 I could always flash an AOSP ROM or use a custom launcher anyway. I will admit, however, that I've got no complaints whatsoever regarding Sense 5 as it is great.
Having said that, I am currently using Apex launcher but that's just so that I can customize my homescreen more so than I can with the stock UI.
Some great replies guys, thanks. With my Desire HD, I used the ARHD rom for a while, so I stuck with the stock Sense experience, but I was rooted. I tried many times to go to CM, etc, but I always came back to Sense. I loved the Sense apps, email, etc. But eventually I had to switch because of lag. And then months later when I tried to go back to Sense, I couldn't..too slow.
So it sounds promising to me that I can basically get the HTC One, and go with the stock (but rooted of course) experience for a while. And with the specs of this phone, I'll be able to move on to the latest and great (Key Lime Pie) when it comes out.
I've been flashing roms for almost 4 years now on almost a dozen phones. My go-to rom has always been CM, and for a while I was flashing all the nightlies for this phone and setting everything up from scratch every few days.
But a few weeks ago, something dawned on me: after untold hundreds of rom flashes, I think I'm actually tired of doing this. With all the unresolved data issues on AOSP roms and various other minor problems, I suddenly couldn't bring myself to modify my phone in a way that would actually remove functionality. I've now been on stock rooted MF9 for going on a month, and other than the inevitable 4.3 update, I don't think I'll be flashing any more roms on this or any other phone.
I've been a die-hard rom flasher for almost as long as I've been using Android devices and I certainly didn't see this coming. Has anyone else experienced this?

That's kind of how I am. I still compulsively check XDA every day even though I never flash anything anymore. It's just really nice to have a phone where everything works. MMS is a good example of something that I don't necessarily use all the time but it's nice for it to be functional when I need it. I suppose I'll probably give KitKat a spin when the roms start rolling out though

This is so funny. I must have tried 50 ROMs on my various phones in the past few years. So many have claimed “visious battery ilfe! Screaming speeds!!!! This will make you cry with tears of joy!”
And then they run about as fast as stock, often with worse battery life, and with broken functionality.
There were some exceptions, like MeanBean on the Evo LTE, and a few others which ran pretty much flawlessly, but switching back to stock always makes me think, “wow, this is not any worse than that custom ROM I just had – a little uglier, but stock runs better…”
(Of course I always appreciate the hard work, and it is fun experimenting.)
Stock runs great on the gs4. Over the last 4 days I've averaged 15.5 hours on time with 3.5 hours screen time. About 70% on WiFi and 30% 3G

I've also never experienced the outlandish speed and battery claims of so many of these roms, including Mean Bean which I never found to work as flawlessly as advertised. Honestly, I think a lot of it is just placebo effect.
I mean no disrespect to the hard-working devs, of course - I guess my personal preferences are just changing. I'm not interested in spending tons of time messing with voltages and clock speeds and themes and kernels and APNs, etc. anymore.

Well a mean if you look at it from a different perspective "back in the day" yeah, what these devs claimed to be true, greater battery life, faster speeds, etc you did get and there was real improvement. Still we gotta understand back then stock android and phone makers weren't up to par and the phones weren't as powerful. Android was lacking in a lot of stuff and that's were modding grew.
But I don't need to give a history lesson, anyone who's been here for a while know why and how this all came about.
My point is though that android has caught up to the need for modding. Generally speaking (barring a persons provider) you get everything and in some cases more than you need without the need to mod.
Also some of the mods are also now available without being rooted, although not at a fast pace, but still on the rise.
I personally wouldn't coin it exactly as being "tied of flashing" but more so as some of you have mentioned the need is no longer there.
You can debloat your phone without root (I forgot the app/method), you get great battery life worth stock and of you even want to go further you have apps like greenify and my personal fav juice defender that can be used without root and so many other things.
There's other factors too that does make a difference like update cycle and harder issues and more phones etc that also leads people to the point of just sticking to stock but there are the petiole here that just like to tinker no matter what skill level you're at.
One last thing I would put out there is that us who are users of these mods wouldn't it be different if you were the ones creating them?

First and foremost the phone should perform basic phone functions flawlessly without significant lag such as making a phone call, sending text messages and web surfing. Could add GPS mapping to that list as it seems germane and pervasive.
Part of ROM fatigue is just the lack of this or perhaps the eternal search for it. Perhaps kit kat changes this.

My personal opinion is that any notion of "lag" in Android ceased to be a relevant discussion at least a year ago. Yes, you might still get the odd animation stutter here and there, but it's nothing that affects the actual usability of the phone.
As far as overclocking goes, 4 CPU cores at 1.9GHz seems pretty sufficient to me, but I understand that there will always be those who like to push their phones. I just feel like the difference is only noticeable in benchmark scores.

I sort this as well as my previous view. The current versions of android has caught up to everything modding was mainly used for. There isn't lag anymore, you get great battery, you also have a couple theme customization as well too. The point is there's a slow in the upward trend to mod.

At the risk of annoying much of the community, CM= overrated. Had every galaxy s series phone and have yet to see it fully functional. They start working on the next version before the previous one is done and honestly, I'll have a new phone before it's finished every time.

Soooo true
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
Plain and simple, I'd highly suggest this rom to anyone looking for a new rom. I've always love super roms (roms that mash together features of more than one rom). I've been running it for a couple days now and am loving every second of it. Many parts of this reminds me of PAC rom, but for some reason I'd pick this over PAC anyday, it just has more feeling for some reason.
The Good:
Full LED control. I was so very disappointed in stock android when I saw what the LED can REALLY do (you can pick almost any color under the sun for battery alerts or notifications that you can set up for per app basis)
AOSB in black (EXACTLY the same as PAC in black)
All CM11 features.
You select how many steps there are in the volume control
Good battery life(Can play a lot of games throughout school and it'll be at around 4% when I get home from school)
Slim Recent Apps
Split view(Even though I don't know what you'd use it for on a phone)
Full nav. bar/ring editing support.
The Bad
No Paranoid Android type control of the UI, which I was kind of hoping for, just a type of it through a preinstalled Xposed app
Outdated Xposed and Kernel tweaker, but since their modified they can't be updated from GPlay store. I ended up uninstalling them from system then reinstalled them from GPlay store, but was kind of irritating that they aren't newest versions.
Poor built in kernel. If you want kernel features at all, you'd have to find a good CAF kernel out there (I'm running Chaos Kernel v11.1)
Long hold back to kill app doesn't seem to work
No ability to have the menu button EVER show up unless you manually add it to nav bar, but then the buttons look weird since it makes all the buttons closer and it plain looks weird for it not to stick to the right or left side.
Doesn't get very dark(I also noticed this in stock, but was hoping that there was some change here, but no luck)
Google Camera's HDR+ makes the app crash (Google camera also doesn't automatically install over built in camera app)
All in all I love this rom, but it is a little rough around the edges. NOTE: I don't know if it's just me or what, but I had problems with supersu, but I'm not sure if it was the rom or me just accidentally messing up stuff
This convinced me to keep the stock version No bugs at all, and all the features that it containes are working.

Well if you ever do want to keep stock, but want some features of a custom room, you can always get the gravity box module for xposed, or get multirom so you cab still have your custom rom; just a suggestion

That's what I'm planning to do. Just rooting for extra features, but keeping it stock. The benefits of custom roms are great, but I'm done with bugs and features not functioning as they should.

Last night I decided to switch back to stock. Realized I should have kept it all along.

The rom sounds pretty good, I might give it a try in Multirom later.

Hey people !
After spending a whole afternoon looking for a stable and battery friendly CUSTOM Rom for my SG3 LTE version I got confused with all those options.
Could any of you suggest one Rom that could offer me good battery, performance and with every function working properly.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
I'm prettty much in favor of non-stock ROMs, so my reply may be a bit biased
Depending on what you mean by "latest" I would recommend Sentinel ROM, which I have been running for months on my S3LTE without any issues - just works, is very stable and excellent battery life !
As it has been a bit quiet around this ROM for some time now and I wanted to look into what has changed in 6 months I now tested a few ROMs and ended up with Ressurection Remix for the time being, looks fine so far.
HTH, best regards,
Axel
The Galaxy Project (link in my signature)
hands down the most stable ROM for the 9305, probably because its made by those who actually use and own a 9305. It's not some fork or spin-off from a 9300 tree.
Running on TGP for a year now, with a functional 4G link.
Thank you guys !
Dont froget amcha rom.. one of the beat
Currently archidroid is the best kitkat ROM. No forced close ,good battery. Fast.

1lshara, What rom did you go with and what do you think of it. Did you have any issues at all?
for simplicity stock look but great battery life and stable i suggest you try rXTREME.JB.4.3-V4.1.
for customization and ofcourse good battery and stable i suggest AllianceROM V3.
if your not onto stock based then i cannot suggest :victory:

Thanks for this suggestion, I once installed ROMs for my GF but she isn't tech savvy and his been a nightmare. All she wants is something with good battery life and camera that works. I am going to give this a go on her phone this weekend and see how it goes.
I think Alliance ROM is excellent except it isn't the latest. Unless it changed recently it is Jelly bean based not kit kat. I used it for months and my only issue was battery life.
I then went through a number of ROMs (I'm totally new to this BTW) and found they all have faults of some kind. Mostly, there's nothing out there so far as I've found that can come close to the Samsung camera app.
I had omni for a while but started having a few problems such as lock up reboot when streaming from media browser.
Currently I'm on liquid smooth which doubled my battery life (well nearly double). However, like all the kit Kat based ROMs I tried, the camera is a bit naff and ecoffeecard had a corrupt camera view rendering it useless. Last week I started getting systemui faults and force closes so updated to the nightly. But still have the systemui crash today. So I'm really thinking of reverting to alliance at this b point. I'm thinking it was the Samsung stuff that hurt the battery so maybe that can be removed (except the awesome camera app).
Hope that helps.

Thanks - got a feeling I looked at that but can't remember the details (I seemed to be flashing a new ROM every hour or so there for a while) - I'll give it another whirl
Use 2.4.5 , don't use the1.x version. 2.4.5 is kitkat. So far i think this is far more battery friendly than the official omni nighties.

You cant place words "stable" and "latest" together!!
Stable means that its working without problems for a long time, so it cant be latest.
Very stable means almost ideal, so it dont exist, everyone has their own experience, so each will give you different advice and you will end up with nothing more than crap
I was trying couple of roms and my theory is that custom roms are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get (sentence form Forest Gump). For me and my actual phone least unpleasant surprises gave stock 4.1.2 with added JKAY mod and removed apps by me.
But for security gap in browser I changed to stock 4.3 with 4.1.2 bootloader and some xposed modules. This is not a good setup, cause from time to time battery is eated very fast, even battery stats does not show anything specific.
As someone has already said, stable and latest can't always go together. Stock based ROMs will generally be more stable. However, Cm-based ROMS, for instance, are currently the only way to get the latest android version, coupled with nice extra features. If you really value being able to use every phone function without any weird bugs, stick with a stock based ROM. For the i9300, I'd recommend SmartDroid (dunno if it's available for the LTE version).

I remember this one now - don't like the aroma installer; it only occupies half the screen yet takes touch for the whole screen. which means a lot of guessing where to tap to trigger the button.
It's installed now so will see how it goes today.
FWIW - the base Google camera hides too many feature down on a second layer of menu options so it's impossible to get to the quickly. the 'colour' one in play store doesn't even have half the features as far as I can find, and the controls keep disappearing off screen. Samsungs app lets you keep custom shortcuts on screen and also lets you take photos during a video shoot.

I agree that Samsung camera is user friendly. For the aroma installer problem,i think if you are coming from not 4.4.2, you should format system before flashing, the aroma installer then will become full screen.

I'm using CM11 on my 9305, and power consumption is terrible.
The stock ROM was also not good.
Which ROM should I use? I prefer stable and battery life.
Thanks!

When you say format - I did a factory reset within TWRP which wipes Data, Cache and Dalvik. is that what you mean or should I be doing an 'advanced wipe' ?
After Archi was installed, I found I was missing my contacts - possibly because I unticked the 'backup to google' option in the beginning as I didn't want it downloading all the apps. my Rerware MyBackup Pro restored the apps ok, but couldn't restore contacts etc - it just froze. I reverted to my TWRP backup of liquid and found a similar issue - I had blocked (or at least not unblocked) the ability of MyBackup pro to access contacts and the like so assume at the moment the backup was bad and hence why the app froze. Regardless, I'm surprised the contacts didn't come from Google cos I've never had to restore them in the passed.
I'll give it another go but it would be nice to fix the aroma issue first, so please advise. btw liquid smooth is kit kat based 4.4.2
