Hey guys a friend of mine is thinking of getting the nexus one for ATT and has a few questions before he decides to buy it, I think I know how it works but I'm with T-mobile so I wanna make sure I give him the correct answer.
- does Google voice work flawless? Free unlimited local text?
- for those running froyo, will portable hotspot work? Any restrictions from ATT?
Yes and Yes...
Just make sure your friend gets an unlimited data plan before they implement the 2GB limit if he's going to tether/hotspot
*GV uses data since its voip so definitely make sure its unlimited

I second that. GV is working fine running FRF83, last time I tried hotspot it worked fine as well (on FRF50). I have the unlimited data plan for iPhone and have had no issues with cellular data.

Google voice is not voip, it initiates the call and calls you and the google voice app handles that. So you need a little better signal to initiate a call. There were some odd things when setting up the voice mail but I disabled it the n set it up manually by dialing the*004* codes in true phone. It works great. The sms is nice, although not true sms,you can't send free picture messages using the voice app,i don't text alot though so it doesn't bother me.
Definitely make sure he gets the unlimited data though if possible,i use a lot of data, streaming music, email, web browsing, navigation, latitude updates. i used about a gig and a half a month.that's just me though.
Tethering works fine too, just don't over do it. I used 3.3gb one month cause I was out on the road for work.
You guys are awesome thank you for the response. The more reason for him to get the Nexus
make sure your bud uses the cyanogen mod and roots it. more access to apps, services, etc.
Exactly. I've been tethering since getting my n1 a month and a half ago. Rooting lets you do SO much.
Hehe he probably wont. Stock N1 with froyo would already cater to his needs.

There's no AT&T Nexus One, just a model that happens to support their 850Mhz HSDPA frequency. The ONLY difference between the 2 versions is the frequencies that the radio chip supports, everything else is identical, including the OS. Everything works _exactly_ the same. AT&T has nothing to do with it, it's made by HTC for Google, not for AT&T.
I understand and I'm well aware of the difference between the two versions. Matter of fact the Nexus is not officially supported by both ATT and T-mobile. Just didn't see the need to emphasize and be technical about my question, I figured "most" people would understand what I meant. Your point is well taken though and thank you for pointing it out brother

I've looked at a couple of threads in many forums (including this one) and was contemplating on this idea for a while before I came here. If this question was asked, then pardon me for posting a repeated question.
I've recently been testing Google Voice on both my phone and computer. I got a Google number and was able to make a call directly on my computer to so many people on Gmail and Google Voice website (no apps), so I assume that Google Voice uses voip technology. If that's the case, is it possible to get an unlimited data plan without talk and/or text for a good low price and use Google Voice over it to save a couple of $$$? And if so, what would be the best carrier to use in the US?

Is there a App for Android or WP6+ (What I am looking for too) that will make calls with Google voice and not use any air time, only VOIP calls through google voice ?
Right now, in the US, Verizon still offers unlimited internet access, not like AT&T caps at 2gb...

I did some searching and found that there are micro sim to sim adatpors. But the service only caps at 2GB. It may work, but I am a heavy data user. If there's any other plans out there that offers unlimited data for a good price, then I may just go with that.

I've looked into doing this same thing, but nobody in the US is eager to hand out data only plans. Additionally, Sprint is the only company (correct me if I'm wrong) that still has true, unlimited data, others have switched to a 5gig cap, which is still likely sufficient for your needs.
One way you might be able to get around it, and this may not be MORALLY sound, is to say you are hearing impaired and thus, aren't willing to pay for the voice portion of your plan.

Hmm. I could use this method for a family member of mine. He's hearing impaired, but he is on the internet a lot and he may be interested in that. I wonder if I can ask Sprint (or whom ever) if I can do that as well.
So many phone companies are getting rid of their unlimited data plan, so it's hard to find a good one. I heard that T-mobile has a reputation of having bad signal, but they have the no contract unlimited data plan for $50/mo, but given what I heard of their reputation, I'm not so sure it's worth it.

Tmobile's signal strength varies. I am in Jersey City, New Jersey and their signal and speed is very good. However, the fifty dollar plan is for internet cards or usb dongles. They do have a $40 data and unlimited texting plan for the galaxy tab... I have both tmobile and sprint and tmo's hspa+ kicks sprints wimax butt

I just got done reading an article from USA Today that was talking about how users who have grandfathered data will be forced to select one of Verizon's shared family plans or tiered plans if or when they go to upgrade their device.
I really despise Verizon for this and will be heading to sprint if I have to give up unlimited data. If they think they will make more money from this move, I suggest everyone leave Verizon and show them the error in their ways.
And just wait, they are trying to eliminate unlimited data for home internet also and the head of the FCC supports limited data. Online gaming and video will suffer and our country will wonder why businesses will struggle. Who's going to let their kids play online games when they have to watch their data usage. Bad news for companies like Sony who have the PS3 and online gaming and bad news for online video streaming companies like Netflix.

In the end though, I really can't see Verizon being too negatively affected by all of this. The heavy duty users will either pony up the extra cash (because of Sprint's shoddy coverage) or leave and bog down another carriers network.
I have unlimited data right now, and I rarely go over 2GB and I've never been over 4. I stream music pretty often, use fox-fi for thether, and spend a good bit of time on my phone.
Does it suck? Yea. Will it get me to switch? Probably not. I guess it depends on what the pricing structure looks like. I'm intrigued by the idea of the shared data plans too.
Cut off will be June 27th 1159pm to keep it for one last contract.
New plans are expensive! http://solutions.vzwshop.com/shareeverything/pdf/verizon_share_everything_plan_details.pdf
I love Verizon...I have 2 lines on my account (both Bionics) one has the 10GB plan and my wife has the 6GB + mobile hotspot and our monthly bill is around $215/month. Plenty of data for that price.
Peace.
Your on xda, and still paying for the hotspot service? We're the reason Verizon started offering the tethering service in the first place once they realized we were already doing it for free.

Believe me I love FoxFi. My wife is a by the book type person.
She uses the hotspot feature for work as a necessity. No matter how many times I tell her that I'm 99% sure she wouldn't get caught using FoxFi she comes back and says that what if they do? I need this for work! I then just sigh.
I think if they are going to force limited data plans on us, at least give an exemption for apps such as Netflix. You will eat your plan up real fast just by streaming a couple movies.
Also include services such as slacker radio and Pandora into the exemption.

So if we have grandfathered unlimited data (we been on verizon for years) do we keep it as long as we dont upgrade or buy phones off contract (like ebay)?

This is precisely how to keep unlimited data.
If Verizon sells you a subsidized phone, that's where they get to force you into a new contract.
If you buy a phone at full retail price from Verizon, or buy a used phone from a place like eBay or Swappa your unlimited data is safe.
Even if you're sitting on something like a Samsung Fascinate, you can go on Craigslist and buy a Razr Maxx, head to a Verizon store, and get a free SIM card to continue service on the Razr Maxx. Nothing on your plan changes except a line item or two for $0.00 indicating that you have 4G Unlimited instead of 3G Unlimited.

This is wrong. That is how it used to work before, now if you attempt to activate a new phone you will be forced to choose new plan options before they will activate it, regardless of where you got your phone. Welcome to the new Verizon.
I will probably be forced off of Verizon at some point. I am already paying $245 a month for 2 androids with unlimited talk, text, and data with insurance and a $3/month slacker radio subscription.
While the data limitations would be no concern to my girlfriend, I am at 5.341gb for the month, with another week left in the month. They are already getting enough money from us every month.
With the changes, I will be forced to cancel my slacker subscription because I use it mainly while driving and won't be able to do that anymore. I don't mind paying $3 a month for being able to listen to music I like while driving. This is an example of why limited data plans have an economic impact on other companies.
I don't know, but I think $245 a month is enough. Is business really that bad for them that they have to try to push for $300 a month? This is why corporate America is seen as greedy.

The shared data plans are a complete rip anyway. From what I read, they charge you for the pool, than the first device, than the second device. That means that I would pay the same I pay now for my plan's two devices and only get 4GB of data for the two of them to share. I know exactly what I am going to do when I get my next upgrade; I won't upgrade.

I understand your point. Your wife sounds like someone who should be paying for it since its for work.
Its the average user whom I think its overpriced for. I don't use it myself too often, but I did pay $10 for easy tether so I can hook up through USB and share my data with my computer when I need to. Since I don't typically need other people using my data, I rarely use wifi tether since it kills your battery faster.
I don't just oppose limited data based on my data usage though. I look at the bigger picture. It will slow down technology growth and may put some businesses out of business. Any business that uses bandwidth will be impacted. Customers will be less willing to pay for services that they could be charged twice for using (the service and the data overage charges, Netflix, slacker radio, etc). Even app developers will be impacted because people will be less willing to download as many apps to try out.
Some flashers may impacted as well. Some of us download the roms directly on to our phones. Our data plans would be eaten up a lot just by keeping up to date with the roms.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA
Sadly when I first found out about shared family plans I thought it would save me money but it seems to get an amount of data equivalent to what the three basic data packages on my account have i will have to pay a good bit more.

AT&T was the first to eliminate unlimited data. They are worse than Verizon. At one point in time, they had their phones locked to where you could only install apps from the android market. They stopped that when Amazon released their own app store and their users couldn't install the Amazon app store, or any of the apps from it.

If you are in a Sprint 4G area, go for it.
I had to have an Airave device just to make a phone call.
Sprint changed their billing, I opted out with no etf's(a moto photon and a nexus s4g, about one month old), went to Verizon, signed on, came home, had full bars of 3G, and a week later they flipped the switch and I now have 4G.
I sent an open signal text to my old Sprint rep showing her the 4G and strength. WHat else could she do?

wifi-tethering tmobile samsung note
keep in mind on september 5th 2012 tmobile is relasing the truly unlimited 4g data plan no caps or anything for 30 dollars
a month free tethering for everyone my friends thx
I keep reading about how great this unlimited $30 data is for t-mobile -$20 when added to a value plan, but you have to add it to your voice and texting plan- the cheapest I found under value plans is $35 for voice, $40 for voice and texting. So you're still looking at $55 at the least, plus taxes and various fees.
I will stick with $30/mo, 100min, unl text and unl web (first 5gb at 4g spd).
Am I missing something?

i believe so my friend im on a family plan right now im paying 20 dollars a month for data for 2 lines for 2 gigs, if i move to the 5g plan i will be paying 3O dollars a month for 5 gigs this will still have a limit if im wifi tethering not using there hotspot thing which is an additional 14.99 per line. So if i get the 30 dollars unlimited no caps which is the sam price as the 5 gigs i can achieve th same goal with out an stupid text messages saying i went over my limit
Then I hope it works better for you.
I left my family plan with ATT for the $30 4g plan. My hubby is stuck on the iphone, so he won't leave. It made sense when we could add a line for $10, plus another $10 for data, but then they went smart phone crazy!!!!!!! Good bye ATT!
Don't get me wrong. If t-Mo turns itself around, they will be jacking up rates too, I'm sure. But for now, I like them.

any help on this one? thanks

after much reading it is not our rooting or software problem, it is the way TM handles IE/chrome/FF to determine to give us that dreaded page on our pc/lt. on a tablet/phone the tethering works fine.
my solution was to run a vpn on my pc and have the info tunnel out from there so TM cant look at what info is being passed, or you can try one of the vpn apps for the phone.
Second choice is on the pc/lt you can run a user agent swithcher for your browser and emulate a android version of it, but only draw back is you will be accessing the mobil version of the site, this is much easier fix for those who dont know how to set up a vpn.
hope this helps others in supplement to the OP original post for getting tethering to work on PC and laptops.

Got my SIM card yesterday from T-Mobile.com
Got my Nexus 7 GSM today.
Cut up my full sized sim to fix into micro sim slot. Worked fine.
Inserted SIM into tablet. Got signal. So far so good.
Nexus 7 doesn't have Phone.apk or MMS.apk on launcher.
Fired up Wi-Fi, went to go Play Store.
Installed Go SMS Pro.
Set up my sim card online. Activated with $30 100 minutes, UL txt, 5GB plan.
Had to retry "nearest city" options and zip codes, but eventually got it to work.
Got my SMS notification on my tablet saying account is good.
Refilled for a month.
Got my SMS notification of the refill.
Setup a T-Mobile account with my prepaid number. All good.
0KB used.
Reboot tablet. I get "Sign into network" which is a html redirect page.
Every page redirects to sign in page. Can never sign in.
Research online.
Turns out it's detected as a tablet. IMEIs are apparently flagged by T-Mobile.
BAH!
I'll root and mess around my /efs/nv_data.bin and reboot back, but so far :-/
Edit: No /efs folder

While I'm probably going to go with the $15 AT&T plan, the $30 TMO plan you referenced sounds like a perfect one for people who want a lot of data, SMS capabilities and some minutes for light talk usage. I was hoping it would work. Have you tried talking to T-Mobile about it?

I have the $15 AT&T plan (actually $10 unlimited) that I'm using for my Galaxy Note 10.1. I would try swapping around but the sim sizes are different. I'm pretty sure that TMobile will say that the Nexus 7 is a data-only device and won't let me do it.
Google has stripped WiFi tethering, MMS and Phone from the device and I'm sure it's no coincidence.

"Stripped" might be too strong a word.
The non-3G versions never had any of those functions. I think it's more likely that they simply chose not (or forgot) to include them in the 3G version.
SMS actually does work, but inbound only (according to rumors) by default. But you can apparently use an SMS app to do outbound fine. There is another thread discussing the phone mod. Apparently a framework change can enable it, but no one has been able to test whether it works or not yet to place calls.
I imagine it would be trivial for a developer to add tethering support, though I don't see the need personally. Most people only care about tethering a non-3G tablet to a phone, not the other way around.
What $10 AT&T plan? Is that the "share your data" plan or an independent pre-paid one?
I don't need a lot of data, but I want to be able to have some if necessary. I also don't want to pay too much for it. $15 seems reasonable, but $10 is better - assuming I don't already need to have a phone with them.
Did you register your sim to N7 IMEI or normal phone IMEI? Wonder if that makes a difference.
Did you ensure the APN was what phones use for data rather than tablets/modems? Tweakker on the market will set it for you if you are unsure.

I did all 1s a couple of times but I when I successfully activated I used the N7 IMEI and changed the "nearest city" option. I strongly doubt that was the issue since other people who have this problem with the TMobile branded Springboard say the SIM works on other devices. I can't test this since I have no other device (tablet or smartphone) that takes microSIM.

I checked them all manually. They were a little different than standard APNs (had a masked password and server field), but I modified them. I was still redirected. I'm pretty sure it's IMEI detection. I'll try it anyway. Edit: Tweaker is not supported on Play Store. I'll have to search for the APK

Look for Tweakker with two k's
When I try to install Tweakker from the store, Google Play reports that it is not compatible with my N7. (I did upgrade it to 4.2.)

On any AT&T family plan with shared unlimited messaging, you can add unlimited data for $10 on dumbphones. If you don't have shared unlimited texting then it's $15/mo per dumbphone
Also, TMobile will let you use your voice plan package if you accept to pay an additional $15/mo to use "Mobile Broadband" which is using it on data-only devices (laptops/tablets)

Can you download it from the app store and upload the apk?
I'm confused. You put your SIM card into the device after cutting it down and once you booted it up, you had signal? You saw the H and everything? But you could not access tmo's data network immediately? But then you logged into the play store with wifi?

That's correct. I've already been shuttling a cut-down T-Mobile SIM between devices. When I have the SIM in the Nexus 7, I get a 3G or an H, but then when I try to make any web requests, I get redirected to My T-Mobile. (In addition, Android prompts me with a "Sign into network" item in the notification area.) I can log back into My T-Mobile with any browser, but that doesn't accomplish anything.
I then connect to the Play Store over WiFi but it won't let me download Tweakker.

Had you activated that sim card before on another phone? I am curious if you can activate it first one a phone, say a One S because it uses the micro sim, maybe thats all it needs? Hmm...

Yes. I've been using the SIM with an adapter in a Galaxy Nexus and an unlocked iPhone 4S just fine, and I have it happily getting data in my Galaxy Nexus as we speak.

Thanks guys for letting us know that Tmobile has blocked this. I kind of expect this since they have been cracking down...on the switching SIMS between different devices types.
Specially with them in touch with google on Nexus 4 and also were preparing to partner with Google to sell the Nexus 7 3G with a Tmobile SIM (like Google is doing with ATT) according to some leaked Tmo news pictures..., We should have expected this already.
It was a few months back they blocked the opposite: using data broadband plans SIM in unlocked phones like Nexus. We used to be able to do that.
Still it's unfortunate. Thanks for saving me to try the same and be stucked with a SIM i can not use effectively. To the OP; you can still use the micro SIM in a regular device without an adapter. You just need to position it right and may be try a couple times. I did not this until I saw somebody do it. Since then if I have cut a sim, I can still use it without an adapter. Just make sure you position it right....by try and error...or by inserting a regular SIM and picking up where the metal needs to touch the phone.
For all if you really want Tmobile...you can use the Special Walmart plan...which gives 60 days if you buy the $35 or $50 plans. To a point it may be equal or better deal than the 5gig $30.....depends if you do not use too much data...you can use: $35 for 3.5 gig for 60 days....or $50 5 gig for 60 days.
That's the way I may go or I may go the way of Ultra Mobile MVNO which is coming up with pay as you go @ 4.9 cents per mb in January. This is expensive but it's 4g hspa+ pay as you go to use only while needing fast data in areas where no wifi is there or my freedom hotspot has reach is fast 500 mb limit or no Clear coverage is being picked up.
We should also try to see if Tmobile is doing the same blocking while using MVNO....plans. If that's the case then the above Ultra plan won't help. In order to get better data deals we would need Voice/data plans from mvno..But that in itself is not useful unless we're able to enable both voice...and data on 3g nexus. Ultra has plans with data or voice only while data costing 2 cents per mb. Or Straightalk/Net10 $45 plans if only the voice can also be enabled.
MVNO do not usually have good deals on data only plans.
On the other side ATT broadband plans are interesting for 3gb for $30. Not quite 5 gig but better coverage.

Can you share some more info on this plan?
I just signed up for the AT&T $15 30day/250MB plan. But this sounds a lot better!
I'm generally around Wi-Fi, so don't need a ton of data. But I'd rather pay (effectively) $15/month for 2-2.5GB then 250MB.

well......doing some reading I got this from Walmart....Not good news. Now I understand why when I switched my SIM from a USB stick device bought at Walmart to a USB stick sent by Tmobile it kept blocking me and redirecting me as with the OP.... It took multiple support calls to Tmobile tech reps...to no avail. Until the recreated my account with free data posted to it and with the regular 30 days limit. They told me I could switch back to the Walmart special at the end of the month...but never was able to get it done....I ended up selling the USB stick....so it seems there's IMEI checking on SIM activated with the 60 days specials....so this won't help on Nexus 3G
Access 4G Internet on the go with the T-Mobile $35 Prepaid Mobile Broadband Pass. It offers 3.5GB of data usage and is good for 60 days only at Walmart. Pass is only eligible on broadband devices purchased at a Walmart after 6/1/2012. The pass includes no activation fee, no annual contract, no credit check and no overages. And it works with any new T-Mobile Laptop Stick or mobile hotspot purchased at Walmart. If you regularly surf the web, check email and update your social network, this card is a good choice.

Ironically, as soon as I posted this, I got the shipping notification at 3 AM CST. But Im still sad about the tmo thing not working
I had hoped that I could use my 3g Nexus 7 on the $30 tmobile plan. I was thinking of registering on the plan when I traveled. I guess the only hope is that someone figures out a work around or tmobile offers a decent data plan. At least, I was primarily planning to use 3g overseas.
It looks like I will be teathering my N7 for for data when away from wifi. This is a pain. In addition, I could have waited and ordered my 3g N7 from B&H Photo and avoided shipping and tax.
