[Q] Xperia Z1 not charging by usb when pc is turned off. - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My xperia z1 charges only when my PC is turned on (it's in bios or in system). When it's off it won't charge as for example my old htc hd2 or my sansa clip mp3.
Do you have any ideas how to solve this issue?

I would suggest that you turn on the computer

When turn off usb is not strong enough to charge Z1 as some new device need more power to charge.

That is true. Z1 needs to suck more power while charging. For example, if i connect my z1 to the dock charger (batery level at 10%) and watch an on-line movie, i get the notification that the power source is not enough to charge my device and that the phone discherges faster than it is charging.

Depends on the computer and port configuration, but for most modern ultrabooks this is not true. While on, the system can provide up to 1.1A current if a capable device asks for it, but only certain computers can do this while off, and some don't even supply any power through the usb controller while off. ASUS products usually have this ability though. @ut2222 have you tried all the USB ports? Is it a relatively new ASUS?

Have you looked into downloading software from Asus that allows for USB charging with the computer off? My gigabyte board came with one, Asus might as well.

Is your USB port a yellow colored one? Those are the ones that power devices while at sleep or turned off. Is your PC a laptop? Did you unplug it? Most powered ports will not work if the laptop is unplugged to prevent the battery from draining completely.

[Q] Charging problem and connection

I am not able to charge my phone since few days, when I try to connect it to PC it didn't detect any thing.
I have reset the mobile to factory setting.
When I power on it it shows battery charging icon when it press it again it start the mobile.
There is no response when I connect it to PC, But when I disconnect it shows charging for a while and it goes away.
I talked with Samsung service center it says there might be problem with charging IC
Please suggest
Have you tried using other charger? Maybe it would be best to bring it to samsung service center if it's IC problem.

I tried with 10-15 different cables, but still there is no response.
I get battery charging image when i press the power button first time without connecting the cable and when I press it again then the phone starts. Does that mean anything, right now I am charging the phone using external charger and I am also not able to connect the mobile to laptop too.

I tried the replacement battery too, but still the issue is same.
Try to plug it directly on usb

I had similar issue.
It turned out to be a bit of pocket fluff inside the usb socket.
I tried a vacuum cleaner first which didnt help very much but then I used a small soft clean paintbrush to loosen the dirt inside the socket, then hoover out and bingo!
Try that first before you send it off for repair.

It looks as though the phone is charging, but the indication of the charging/not charging state is very slow to react.
You plug it in - it shows nothing (but maybe charging), then you unplug it and it shows charging (for a short time).
I suggest that you plug the charger in for at least 10 minutes and time how long before the phone displays that it is being charged. After the 10 minutes, unplug the charger and time how long before the display changes to not being charged.

[Q] Cant charge with external battery

Hey guys,
I have the ZNEX Powerpack:
Capacity: [email protected],7V
Output: 5V 1A
amazon.de/ZNEX-Ausgangsleistung-Hochleistungsakku-Playstation-Blackberry/dp/B004A8288U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363106013&sr=8-1
Unfortunately its not possible for me to charge my s3 mini with this external battery.
The cable and the battery is okay, tested that with other devices.
Anyone can solve this problem or has it too?
Thanks

same Thing when i restart the phone with external battery plugged on, there just happens nothing, normal boot process without any hint of charging^^
Ahh really? I had same issue and my method seemed to work are you trying with ur usb cable that came with the phone or the one that cane with the battery power. Try both out

What do you mean with "the one that cane with the battery power"?
Ive tried a lot of different usb cables they work all with the original charging-adapter but None with the external battery
tried it with the Amazon Basics usb cable, original Samsung data cable and the cable from the old Motorola xt 720 ^^
But thank you for the answer
strange.. when device is off can it charge or it doesnt charge at all with the samsung data cable. If it does charge while off, when its charging turn on the phone and it should charge as well.

My external battery has also 5v.. and 1A should reach to Charge
Same problem here. No matter what external battery pack, this S3 mini is not detecting the battery pack as a charger. All of these packs work just fine with any other phone: tried with 2 SII, i8910, different Nokia phones, Blackberrry's etc.
I suspect that somewhere in the kernel there's no "3rd" unknown source or it has odd values, or it's somewhere else, but definitely soft problem as phone usb port works fine and recharges just fine from PC or laptop with any and every usb cable. Same goes for wall chargers. I haven't tried with car chargers just yet, but might do so. Just the phone is not mine, it's my wife's phone so I can't just take it with me.
Any suggestions?
Just a quicky: Is your phone trying or connecting to a PC in MTP mode?
XXAMA2 rom here and it always has only MTP or Picture mode, maybe this triggers something if on external power pack?
Edit: BTW, even when phone is turned off it won't charge the battery from the 3rd party external battery packs... weird.
Edit2: It started to charge out of 2.1A port on external pack after 5 minutes... then continued to charge once the phone is turned on. Later I unplugged it and plugged in again and it won't charge if the phone is on. Oh well, at least it can charge if first turned off. At least that when on the road and without wall plug...
Even more strange is what I'm getting now when plugging to Duracel external pack - phone starts the music player on it's own and starts to play... I think it's defo something related to MTP or such...
Strange. My power bank works just fine. The charging indicator shows when I plug my S3Mini with my power bank. (Cheap chinese brand. 5200mAh, 1.0 A)
Usually when the USB indicator showed up when you plug your external power source, the cable is the one with 4 lines (two for transferring data, and the other two for receiving electricity needed for charging, or +/- ).
Try using the USB cable with two lines only (electricity lines only, without data transferring lines)

Well, after trying all USb cables I have in my house I found one that is CHARGING IT!!! I dunno what wires it has or not and I don't care ATM. Point is there's nothing (EDIT) wrong with battery packs nor the phone. It all still indicates damn MTP kicking in where it shouldn't IMO. Dang Samsung for screwing it all up yet another time.
Still, I'm happy it CAN work all right, so no more depleted battery when on the road / trip
Thanks for a great suggestion there!

I dont believe that for a second. There is no way that a PC that is not drawing any power can output power.
You may be slighlty confused in two ways.
1) Was your PC turned off? Or was it hibernating/sleeping
2) Is your PC actually a laptop and so has an internal power source (A battery)
A pc that is turned off might as well be unplugged, so how do you charge anything from it when it is not connected to any electricity?
Have you tried plugging it into a lemon to charge it?
Seriously though, there was definitely something wrong if something with no power can provide power.

Then you have a different definition of "off" then.
My definition is that it does not consume any electricity, yours is obviously that it is in standby.
If it is drawing electricity it is not off!
Seriously though, it sounds like you have changed something on your PC to stop power output to the USB. Try your old phone again, see if that still works, or try someone else's phone

I just love how some people can be complete dicks on this forum! It looks like he's asking why won't his phone charge from his pc after the pc goes into sleep mode. I have plugged my TL to my laptop and it charges, but I plugged it in overnight thinking that it would fully charge to wakeup and find the phone dead. So apparently once the pc goes into sleep/hibernation it stops sending power to the usb port. In theory, when I go to sleep my lungs don't stop working and I continue to breath, so why when the computer goes to sleep does it stop sending power to the usb port??

I have a charging port on mine. So I can charge when its off.
But only a few old PCs support charging while on sleep and even then, the device matters. For example, my external mouse seemed to glow while PC is on sleep. But I can't use the same port to charge my iPod. So you should see if the galaxy still works at that port and if yes, then you are out of luck buddy. Get a USB 3.0 charging port maybe..

Off is not unplugged
Off is when you select shutdown PC and it turns off this requires a full cold boot to start back up. The power supply is still plugged into the wall and capable of delivering power if needed.
S5 power state if you are a linux user.
Sleep is when the computer saves it's current state to ram and then puts itself into a low power standby state shutting down power to the CPU but keeping the memory powered. From here the computer just needs to load it's previous state from ram and carry on.
S3 power state for the linux user.
Hibernate is when the computer saves it's current state to disk and then powers down. From here the computer needs a full cold boot but the sequence is quicker since it is not loading a full new session rather it is loading a saved session from disk.
S4 power state for the linux user
If you define off as unplugged from the wall then you are just being overly picky and the problem is yours not the original posters.
Now for the original posters question.
Some motherboards will keep 1 or more USB ports powered when the computer is OFF however it appears the xperia series requires some kind of signal from said USB port before initiating charging, this signal is not present when the machine is OFF or in HIBERNATE.
My Xperia T will charge when the computer is in SLEEP mode but will not charge when it is OFF or in HIBERNATE
However my Galaxy S2 will charge when in SLEEP or HIBERNATE mode and when the PC is OFF.
This is a limitation of the phone not the computer.
True completely, this is the end
Thanks all

If i was being overly picky I do apologise, but i did take to mean the word "off" as "off", that may be down to semantics or local dialects, but where I am from "off" means drawing no power.
Now that the OP has his answer I suggest this thread should be closed, before more flaming over the meaning of words happens, and more people continue name calling.

USB vs AC power

I saw in the packaging that it says AC power is "recommended", so naturally I wanted the best possible experience and hooked mine up with AC power. I was just curious why this is? It would be much easier (and more portable) if I just used USB, but what am I losing by doing this?
I assumed this had to do with the CEC options to allow my TV to power on thru the Chromecast, however I have been unsuccessful in making that work fully. It will turn the TV on only if I turned it off while on the correct input for the chromecast...so kinda useless so far.

USB power might not be enough to drive the usb stick, while that AC adapter is guaranteed to deliver 850mAh
if your TV's USB is part of an unpowered hub, and you have other devices(or internal devices) powering off that hub, the chromecast might not get enough amperage (500mAh/port per USB standard)
Cool what would be the result of not enough mAh? Meaning if my USB port powers the device am I good, or will I suffer some Wi-Fi signal loss if the mAh is too low?

I think it just wouldn't turn on.
Another benefit of AC power is that when you hit cast something, it'll automatically turn on the TV.
That is what I was curious of. So the auto turn on feature won't function on USB power? Only A/C power?

Well the chromecast needs to be on already for it to turn on the TV.
If the TV is off, the chromecast won't be getting any power so you need to turn on the TV to turn on the Chromecast.
Right, not a big deal for me since that feature doesn't seem to work on my TV anyways. I am using AC power atm. If that's all I'm missing I might aim for portability.
Thanks

Z1 4.4.2 (.757) Won't charge via USB

Hi guys,
I've been running Z1 4.4.2 (14.3.A.0.757) for some months now and have been working around this issue by using the connection points + adapter to charge my phone. I thought i would come and see if there had been any updates but .757 still appears to be the latest, so my hopes of upgrading to fix are pointless.
When i plug in the standard Sony cable into the phone via the connection under the flap; the phone will constantly "wake" - If i try to turn the screen off it will constantly turn back on. The phone will not charge.
Phone charges without issue using the connectors on the outside.
Summary-
Phone won't charge direct by cable (standard wall adapter)
Phone charges fine using connector points + adapter
Any ideas?
If you connect the Phone to PC vie USB you can transfer data without problems? ..and it charging from PC?
Plugged into PC
- Screen wont sleep
- File transfer fine; 155mb Transfer in <5 seconds.
- Does not appear to charge

The problem is that the OP cannot charge it via USB with wall charger so he have to use the magnetic cable or dock.
