Not ready for primetime - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Pretty disappointed after picking up my gear last week. I'm going to give it a month before I dump mine for sale if they don't start putting out useful apps for it. Seems like half the stuff is pushed out with bugs and semi working or not working at all. Half the apps in the store (gee there really isn't much) hang on install, fail to work correctly or are just junk that you don't need. Is it really that hard to offer an app that would let you read your full email body on it, or an app that would give you facebook updates on it without reading them on the phone, or a watch making app that actually tells time and doesn't lock up 4 times a day? Samsung should just change its name to the Galaxy gear beta edition. I understand the 30% return rate on them now after owning one.

I don't really get where people find the time and energy to post like this. Get a refund and move on with your life, already.
The galaxy gear is awesome (and so is the pebble, the sony smartwatch, etc. Can't wait to see what Google and Apple do)
Samsung has really knocked this out of the park and showed us the potential of wearables - probably better than anyone - and how they're so obviously going to be the future.
Samsung has been innovating incredibly well lately. I really hope Microsoft/Google/Apple up their game and keep up!

Well...it is indeed lacking a lot of features that should be there right out of the box but I am sure you have done your research before you bought the watch. I did do my research and I am quite happy with the watch. I wouldn't buy it at $300 but at $210 with tmobile discount 30% off, this is not a bad buy at all.
I never once had a problem with installing apps from Samsung app store. Their selection is really small and apps are not that great but it never hang or fail to install for me. You can also sideload apps as long as they don't require access to internet if you don't mind some extra steps of installing.
Reading email would be a nice thing but I don't see myself using the tiny screen to read email. I would rather want to do it on the phone.
Facebook update sure would be nice.
Never lock up 4 times a day but then I don't use watch styler app or custom face.
Also please try the ATN app. It helps with all the notifications that I need the watch to show such as whatsapp and whatever others app you might need.

Could it be better ? Sure. Will it get better? Of coarse it will !
There's nothing BETA about it, its simply a new consumer product which hasn't boomed yet.. once the developers gain interest you can bet your ass your going to see some amazing stuff from the gear.
Anything Samsung related on the watch works extremely well, could they have included additional features sure. But why would they ? Its a Samsung device providing support with Samsung products/applications straight out of the box.
All the things listed can be easily resolved via software updates, or third party software. Eg. ATN.

Any complaint you have about the gear will have the same complaubt about the new sony smart watch. Its new. Do your homework before you buy something.

Eh, I love mine (got the 30% off deal) but I agree with the OP and am disappointed with the small amount of apps in the Samsung store... and at least half of it is junk. A big reason for that is because Samsung is being weird about releasing the SDK to the public, I wish they'd get on with that soon. Though I think (I hope) the situation will get a lot better soon when they release official updates for S3, S4, Note2 to make them compatible with the Gear.

I have to disagree with the OP. The gear is amazing. I don't have problems installing apps and I think some of them are pretty good like watch styler. The only thing I don't like about the gear is that it doesn't show notifications for third party apps and I hope Samsung releases an update enabling notifications for all apps.

The Galaxy Gear is ready for Prime Time.
I love my Gear.
Has all the Apps I want.
Anybody that takes the time to find this forum should know,
You do not have to get all the Apps from the Samsung Store.
A member of XDA has a solution for notifications, many people use it and like it.
Do not know about facebook, could care less about facebook.
Sounds like the OP thinks the device replaces a smartphone,
A smartwatch tells you at a glance if the message you get is worth pulling your smartphone out.
Who other than the OP, has every had any problems with the Gear Locking up?
Who other than the OP can not find a way to tell time with the Gear?

I LOVE my gear watch

For me SVoice/Phone integration/Camera is what makes this watch, and also of course the notifications. Really don't care about apps (Although Tripit, Evernote and MyFitnessPal are nice).
It's like google glass on your wrist!
eing able to reply to messages by voice from my wrist in the car is awesome. I never hear anyone talk about these great features when they are griping about the watch.

Hi . that's a shame you are disappointed. What colour did you get.

Cant reply to a txt with s voice unless its dead silent or s voice gets it wrong
Facebook app turns your phone settings so it speaks every stupid thing its doing
watch making app STILL locks up daily your clock
every other day updates to gear manager trying to fix something without a update list to give you a clue
installing apps hang alot
some dont work or give you just a blank watch face when you try to open them
Guess all the posts in the gear forum are made up
I quit flashing roms and tinkering since my HTC MDA days, I just want a product that works out of the box I guess
Every review is the same.. so so on it. Return rate is high also. The few that love them, great, tinker away with yours. When I can read my 3rd party apps emails, pick from 100s and 100s of apps maybe Ill dig it. Till then its a beta toy as far as im concerned. i knew it when i got it just didnt expect it to be this crappy I guess.

I'd like to know how many of the returned watches are due to either people not usually wearing a watch or because it wasn't compatible with their device
I've not had any of the problems mentioned here (mind, I didn't use watchstyler). Mic and speaker seem fine to me
Hardly any apps these days mention what has changed between versions so can't see that being a negative. Having to reset every time there is an update sucks though (however, the restore thing seems to go ok for the most part)
I just want my notifications to give more detail - mms to show pic, email to display html, sms/facebook/etc not be limited by character limit. It's all very possible going on the evidence
Couldn't care less about apps. Good to be able to sideload though

I'm loving my gear but can also appreciate where the OP is coming from. In the main I think the gear lives up to its expectations ax far as I am concerned.
The biggest issue I have is the lack of water resistance, and how it handles facebook notifications. I am hoping though that this thing gets better as time moves along. It does worry me however that work on the Gear 2 will already have started and we will end up with a non supported device quite quickly.

you have to be blind to call Gear a decent product. they had a great idea, but the execution is terrible and you may disagree with that, but you are lying to yourself. this needs so much work to become a decent product.

Seems like you got a beef with the apps. Not the phone. You keep talking about bad apps, or not enough apps. Well they were selling out in my area, and I got mine on discount. Found out they were selling fast on Ebay. Purchased a couple more at discount, sold them for a profit. It seems like a lot of people think differently than you. We all understand this is a FIRST, you didn't expect this to first run to be PERFECT did you...
BTW, I am a layman, don't know JACK-CHIT, to be honest. I got the Note 3 on a humble, and since I was way over my head with the Note 3, I might as well go all the way..Got the Gear at $209.. Happy Camper...

Can't believe we were anxiously awaiting this..

Android 4.2 doesn't even seem well thought out, let alone designed. Is Google playing the Apple game, tying us into their universe and making us take whatever the deliver?
Do they even care how many apps won't work or have to have multiple purchases to support their multi-user "security"? Should have just left the multi-user thing to 3rd party devs. They fail on this, IMO.

Google doesn't care.. Remember when 4.1.1 broke a bunch of paid apps by sticking them in the asec folder which wasn't mounted at startup? So since it wasn't mounted Android never saw the apps during boot and paid keyboards and widgets disappeared after a reboot. MONTHS went by before it was addressed. Meanwhile developers of those paid apps had angry customers and money lost because of Google
This will be the same song and dance.. Google is getting very sloppy with development and communication with developers pre-release seems to not exist.
I love it.

Stop stereotyping. People are always so quick to hate on Americans. Yes there are bad Americans...but every country has them. Even your country. But I'm not going to go there since I happen to like most people from the UK that I've encountered...it would be unfair to label your entire nation as arrogant, ungrateful, and judgmental because of your behavior.

Android is and always will be "A WORK IN PROGRESS". My opinion only but if you want bland and safe sell your nexus 7 to me for .50 cents and get a ipad mini.
People who are having issues Please go to the developers web site and let them know your app is not working properly .Give them exact details. You can do the same to google at groups.google.com. Just be Patient
Now my GRIPE The multi user cluster (word here im not typing) as others said was not well though through by google. My guess is they made a date promise and pushed out only part of the Feature.. Typical Google.

I suppose YMMV, but I love 4.2. Smoother than 4.1, and nice features. The only thing that really seems half-assed is the multiuser support.
What is your problem with multi-user? For me and my daughter it is working great - could not be better.
I did add my account to her user ID Play store so she could see the apps we own and install the link.
Performance is good - all our preferences and accounts are separated - and I really can't think of any other features I would want.

I haven't played with multi-user yet, can you add the account just for the play store and not have someone access the gmail account associated with it?
That's my gripe, I want to be able to for ex, have my nephew play with my tablet and all the games etc, but don't want him to access to my gmail etc. I thought this was perfect for that but then read about the app issue. Also, I assume there is no type of limited user, in that a secondary account can still uninstall apps, but at least they can't delete files from the other users home dir.
Yes - my account is just added to my daughter's play store. Open play store and look at add account option.
Works perfectly to give her access to the apps we share.
NO shared Gmail.
Forgot something important:
When you add a second account to play store, you are given a bunch of items you can synch, like contacts.
Uncheck them all!

Stick mount wasn't a feature of 4.1. It was hacked in which is why you had to be rooted and use an app. You'll get USB support again. Multiuser support screwed with the storage. That's all.
New tweaks are a little rough around the edges but will be smoothed out soon enough. Give it time, damn guys. I personally think its no better or worse then 4.1.2. We just have a few new toys now.

4.2 = 1st time I've truly experienced "butter"...
Sure, I kinda miss the bells & whistles I had on Codename Android, and I'll definitely check out any forthcoming 4.2 updates, but scrosler's stock, rooted, deodexed ROM is far & away the smoothest, quickest ROM I've used on any Android device. Stock kernel, no tweaks, plain vanilla is for me for now. Way better Google experience. OK, I sideloaded the AOSP browser for Flash, but that's it. Chrome is much more responsive on 4.2 than 4.1.2 - Everything is noticeably quicker - I even detect better wireless response. Your results may vary, but I'm not going back!

Well, I do belive that you are right. I also feared (and expected, to tell the truth) that something EXACTLY like this would happen. I tried NOT to update the system, but why the hell did they keep forcing it when we obvoiusly do not want it? And probably, they must have known that it will broke a lot of things...
Just to explain: for me, there was a message with three buttons: upgrade, more info (which leads to seme text and bigger "upgrade" button and "later", but that "later" means only "ask at next screen unlock" which made the tablet realy hard to use. So, what choice have I had?

How do you think about Galaxy gear?

I'm planning to get Galaxy Gear soon, How do you think design, and performance of the Galax Gear?
I have used the gear for about a day and I have to admit that I am impressed. This little watch takes good photos and it is pretty cool to make and receive calls from it. The messaging integration is real great I like to know who is texting and Colling without looking at my note 3. There are some great apps out for the gear already and I think we will see many more in the very near future. I have attached some photos of the app interface that allows you to install apps.

Be honest. How many of you have received a call on your gear while in public and talked into the wrist band?
I have grave doubts if I could do that. You see when I was a kid we had the local 'mentally challenged' person talk into his watch. Left rather an odd impression on me. Its odd because I am not generally concerned what others think about what I wear when out.
As a notification device I can see great potentially but unsure I am able to use it as a phone?
Great fun in any case. The novelty will wear off though.
I've used it as a phone and you really don't hold it up to your ear.
Speaker is loud. I basically just did what I wanted with my arms and talked. Not sure you really use it in public.

Remote for Note camera

Anyone know of an app that lets the gear work as a remote button to take a picture with your note camera? I believe the sony smartwatch has this feature...i think this would be a nice feature, as you can be in each picture you take and decide when the shutter goes off with a simple tap on the gear screen...
I had that on my Note-2 with Sony Watch.
I don't know of anything for Note-3 and Gear. However, the Note-3 by itself does allow for voice triggering of the camera.

I hope developers start releasing Apps for the Gear. It is disappointing that no new apps have shown on the Gear / Samsung Apps store.

when you search the internet the Galaxy Gear gets bad press and its nuts, I was a little put off buying one at the start but decided yesterday to spend the cash as I am in Brisbane Australia for 3 weeks of training then back to NZ, I when I first brought my gear (yesterday) went to try some notifications and thought what the hell Samsung why would I want a notification that means I then had to open my phone.......... now think about this
Samsung is NOT some back yard designer/manufacture but a multi discipline very very big company, did you know they build heavy Industries?
So now we know Samsung is a very clever bunch of people... why would they sell a product with such a negative response from the public?
My answer to this came today when I upgraded my Gear to the latest firmware version and suddenly ALL the things we wanted were present, think about this.... how hard was it for Samsung to add this extra features? SIMPLE... so why release it without it?
NEGATIVE ADVERTISING IS THE CLUE
If you think about the amount of coverage this has given Samsung in a very short time well....... and they fix it with a simple update? perfect marketing!!
Oh and im very happy with my gear including the price, it will exponentially improve over the next few months
Also look at the thread count and posts in the smart watch section, another thing you see comments out there stating its useless without a phone.... well yes you need to do the initial setup, but its got a built in clock, when you turn off your phone, or flatten it...it still keeps time
samsung is great at making hardware, but i can't think of any part of the software that i really appreciate. i would love if they just stick to releasing new devices itself running pure android.

yes I can agree with that, its better to be an open market for this sort of thing
Samsung with the latest update is wayyyy ahead of sony smartwatch witch is on the 3th generation. They launched the gear without some of the improuvments because they WANTED baddly to be the first, before Apple. What i don't understand is why samsung is not sending again the gear to be reevaluate by tech media after the last update.

Also, the negative publicity because of the non-availability of key features on a device that's hardware specs should allow, makes developers naturally want to get their hands on it and fix these problems, then what does Samsung have, a bigger developer following to help enhance this newer device form factor so they can be the first on the front lines with the most development, so they can set themselves as the main smart watch manufacture, so they can control more of the market, in short, they peoples at the Samsung do da business sneaky and outs o dey own greed like a de apple butt-a-heads (but not nearly as selfish and unconcerned about the true advancement of technology as the advancement of their own wallet) Lolz on rants but it's true.

Dollar for Calculator app!

The lack of apps and not being able to sideload is irritating right now but I believe when development progresses we will get these things. I refuse to pay a dollar for a calculator app or 2048. I would like to have them on my watch but think they are taking advantage. I just gave samsung 200 dollars, they should provide more free useful apps.

So you want Samsung to develop free apps for you because you paid $199 for the watch?

Some... yes. A calculator should be stock. What's with the attitudes on here today? If they are going to compete with android, they are going to want to develop a lot more apps.
P.s. And over the years, I have given them a couple of thousand. I've been very loyal to samsung.

I agree, man. I love some of the stock apps, for example, the remote app, but a calc app should be default too. I would consider paying for the calc app if it at least had a percentage option.
You can sideload apps, it's just that there are no apps to sideload. I'm sure samsung will provide us with a a calculator just as they provided a sleep app which wasn't available before the weekend

Completely agree with azpatterson3, the calculator is the symbol for the problem! It's not the dollar for the an app. I like many always try to buy the dev's paid apps and I have hundreds of apps stuck on play to prove it! However, for Tizen we have (almost) only that one app (not counting the nascent watch face efforts, and Glympse). Morover, a basic calculator app is the type of app that every single beginning developer publishes for free just to get started! Samsung marketing this in their new Tizen store is . . . .puzzling! The irony is thick!
I do accept polish_pat's point too. There will be a free calculator, more watch faces and more. . . everything. Hopefully many created by outside devs that we can side load. But waiting is really, really frustrating.
Reminds me of when I bought a Motorola Atrix some years back (don't even remember which model right now!) I and many others were waiting and waiting for development on roms --it was painfully slow and limited. I felt like I won the lotto when I switched to samsung and found the rich, and fast development that hit all their galaxy (and note) phones.
However, with our Neo we're back in Matrix territory again. . .waiting for the developers to cross the river and setup shop. It won't be as fast since the population of users is much smaller, probably won't be as rich either. Fortunately, this is only a watch
As for Samsung leading any development surge, well, that would be great. but I suspect they will focus on ensuring the NEo has everything that is out there for other smart watches health bands and that's about it.
Moreover, if the way mucked up the S-Health/ Fitness for Gear approach is any model for how they will go forward, then we truly are going to be stuck in a mediocre app environment. I really hope they get better than that!
Still, I am enjoying what the Neo has now -- the (limited) sleep app, the telephony (great!), text messages and even S voice is pretty good for some searches and messaging for me (so far). Although more than once I have had to nervously say "cancel message" in a panic after looking at what my watch and S voice interpreted my words to be! )

An OS is nothing without a community behind it. You can have the best, most efficient, smooth and gorgeous OS but its simply sucks if there is no one to code for it (aka windows mobile) This watch is Tizen's first serious market entry, so of course it sucks, for now, but remember that the king of mobile gadgets is behind it and it will eventually be something great. We are the pioneers of Tizen, we are paving the way for the future. Tizen is a good opportunity for any dev to have a fresh, new and especially easy revenue stream. I mean a guy coded a freakin simple calculator app and sold it for 1$. I'm sure that by the end of May, he will make at least a couple grand on something that any dev can code in under 1h. Same goes for any other app. If i were a dev, I'd jump on this opportunity of knowing this is a new emerging market that has a very serious bunch of backers (Open handset alliance) and within a year, there will be at least a couple hundreds of thousands of devices just screaming for 3rd party apps. And although a calculator might not be something that someone would spend a dollar on, there are many, many other simple apps that people would pay for. As an example, porting a T1 wrinting input that would allow us to write something directly on the watch

I'm developing a simple calculator app I'm going to release for free... I find it crazy people are charging for extremely simple apps! I can see charging $1-5 for an app that actually takes some work to develop, but comon, a watch face for $2?!
Its all about opportunity. I'm not ever going to spend 2$ on a watchface, but suply x - demand xxxxxxxxxxx and as long as it stays like that, there will be more and more basic apps for a premium price

Yeah, makes sense... they have had a lot of people buy them already. So hey if you can succeed at it, I guess touche.
But I submitted my calculator! Hopefully it gets approved... first app I have ever submitted. See if it goes through...
Out of curiosity, whats your coding experience? I might get motivated enough to take a crack at tizen. I know the basic stuff on Eclipse and have a few good ideas i would like to try for the gear. Is it easier or harder than for Android?

I consider myself a .NET developer first and Java a lid becoming a close second although I still have a lot to learn. Tizen widgets use HTML and Javascript for the backend. So if you know HTML5 and J Query I would say it's easier than android. Hard part is limited auto complete and knowing the SDK. For the most part I avoided the sdk.
Thanks for app!

I also submitted a calculator but I avoided their SDK completely
I don't know how Samsung responds they will probably not be happy

Nice.. I bet they are processing like 59 calculator apps because people had the same idea! But yeah the sdk is just weird when it's javascript... seems too weird to me.
Why don't you guys post your apps here for us to use

Yes, all you need to do is zip up the wgt file and post that. We can side load w/ sdb install.

I'll see if I can post mine later tonight. Found a small bug with mine where you can stack functions... also going to be implementing advanced functions here soon.
I just zip the wgt file with any normal zip program?
So you don't need the sdk to make app for this watch? I am not a programmer but I read that sdk is closed sources. I know closed source is restricted.
