[Q] Reset to factory after update and root - Moto X Q&A

I have the update and root. It appears I will need to either send it in for repair or get a new one. If I reset to factory, will it reset it back to the update and blow away root? That's what I want it to do though I don't want to test it.

you wont be able to factory reset if you used one of the root exploits for unlocked BL. pwnmymoto, motoroot, or rockmymoto. You will need to rsd back to stock. There will also still be a flag stating that you rooted your phone. There are instructions on how to remove this but you must be familiar with fastboot and adb I believe. I had to do it with one of my phones. I doubt they will check to see if the phone had been rooted if it has stock firmware on it without root. But they may. I did it jsut to be safe. But i had never done that before when returning a rooted phone and never had a problem.
You can't do a factory reset with those root exploits because they hijacked teh stock recovery so the factory reset wont' work.

That's kind of what I suspected only there isn't a fxz for the update yet and I rooted after the update (RockMyMoto). I guess I'll have to wait.

What carrier is your device for? I thought almost all the fastboots have been posted for the device after the OTA hit

[Q] How to "Unroot" Moto X in order to OTA Update

I've rooted my Moto X with RockMyMoto, now I unrooted it because I want to OTA Update it to 4.4 Kit Kat.
I've done that, and was stuck on bootloop. Used "fastboot erase cache" to get it running again.
My question is: What should I do with my "unrooted" phone before going to the OTA Update?
I've done some research but it is always answers to specific problems. I think I should download an image from sbf.droid-developers.org/ and flash it with RSD Lite. But do I need to unlock my bootloader in order to do that? Is there any other way I could achieve the same goal?
I really like this kind of stuff, and would like learning in the process... But I think I'm missing something, and I'm afraid to brick my phone after this bootloop problem. And have decided I should ask first, and act later.
(I've bought my device from another person, that bought it from a store. So I think I should download the retail imagem from the website, but does something happen if I download the "wrong" image?)

If you want to keep root with 4.4, follow the steps in SlapMyMoto. If you do not want root in 4.4, yes you can flash the sbf download with RSD Lite. You do not need an unlocked bootloader to flash with RSD Lite. It is always a way to get back to stock.

Does the process erase all data (like photos and apps for example)?
Thank you for the simple and straight answer!

I did that, downloaded the image, then I flashed it into my phone. But it stoped in "reboot In process" and it does not continue. (It rebooted, but didn't erase anything, and it is now on my Homescreen normally)
Is this normal? How do I know if the flash worked?

you're rooted trying to do an OTA?
once you root, accepting an OTA can mess up your phone or make you lose root.

don't flash back to it in twrp. use rsdlite or manually flash it with fastboot commands. if you actually flashed the full ota and didn't have root or twrp anymore then you would be able to take the OTA no problem.

Oddly I've done that even before I put twrp on my phone I used mfastboot with the stock IMG I got from moto. I did the update right when I got the phone and it did what I described so I thought I for find a something where I could flash stock to my phone by using twrp.
Download Motorola device manager. It should automatically restore the software to stock 4.4.
http://d1tsx1og7dz7v4.cloudfront.net/MotorolaDeviceManager_2.4.5.exe
thx for the help i had to mfastboot 4.4
This is your easiest option. All you need to do is run this utility. It will install drivers, download firmware, and flash back to stock. I used it earlier, and it's brilliant.
Even if you've already solved your problem, I highly recommend saving this for later use.

Newest SBF file

I remember having to delete a line during the sbf process for SlapMyMoto, with the new 4.4.2 sbf file will this be necessary again?

This guide can answer your questions better, or look in the locked bootloader threads.
But if you are on 4.4.2 now and not rooted, you're out of luck. You can't do it. You can possibly downgrade, tho it can lead to a brick if not done completely properly.
If you are already rooted before updating to 4.4.2, depending how you upgraded, you will have root....but read/write is enabled and can't currently be disabled on 4.4.2. So any root changes you make will be gone if you hard reboot or power off the phone.
Read up for more info.

As you saw from my other thread, I'm on rooted 4.4.2 with read/write enabled. Is it safe flash the 4.4.2 SBF back to stock or is that considered a downgrade? I read going back to stock is recommended before unlocking the bootloader.
Thanks

You can't be on 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader, rooted with write protection disabled. If you are, you're the first and only one on here.
I think we're miscommunicating a bit.
I am sure what you have is root.....with write protection enabled. As is the issue with 4.4.2. Meaning, if you hard reboot, you lose all root changes. Correct?
But no, you don't need to do anything to unlock the bootloader. Your phone will be wiped during the process. You'll have to flash custom recovery and root after. Then install all your apps again.

verizon 4.4 rooted with slap cant install 4.4.2

Broke phone sending it back to moto.. Trying to install the update but it fails .. Thinking because of root so going to try the factory reset and see if that will unroot and let 4.4.2 install

If you used SlapMyMoto you should already know that it is not compatible with 4.4.2 - did you even read the relevant threads? Most likely you have modified something in /system OR you have custom recovery installed. Both of these issues are well documented here and will prevent you from accepting ANY OTA update.
A factory reset probably won't help, but if you follow the instructions in the "Return to Stock" thread (and flash the ENTIRE stock SBF for YOUR carrier) it will probably fix you right up.
It is irresponsible to flash things without knowing the consequences and then 'send it back to moto'. This results in higher prices for all of us, and encourages the OEMs to lock the devices down TIGHT.

Thanks for the info.. but give the ben of doubt. the phone was dropped by my brother and the glass is broke. the phone works fine. and is currently working perfect on 4.4 rooted with slapmymoto and wipemymoto
I have the replacement phone here now and it came with 4.4.2 and I want to experiment with the old broke one before sending it back. I want to know what I can do and cannot do with 4.4.2 using Pie root and Towelroot, but try on the broke phone first, that's why I need to change from a good working 4.4 root to 4.4.2
Peace

Ok, that makes more sense I guess.
Yes if you want to experiment, download the entire 4.4.2 SBF for Verizon (that is your carrier, right?)
It is this one: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/download.php?device=0&file=841
Follow the instructions in the Return to Stock thread. Everything you need is there - all the tools, binaries, and drivers.
Once you have flashed the SBF, you will be on STOCK 4.4.2 and you can experiment all you want!
Good Luck

Nope. Not unless you have STOCK recovery, and an unmodified /system - which it appears you do not.
Just follow my previous instructions and flash the entire stock SBF (NOT the OTA). This will fix you right up in about 4 minutes...

Update failed on Mofo Turbo

My wife is using my old Turbo which was originally Mofo rooted and it's currently on the First Encounter 5.1 stock image since she doesn't care about root. We tried to do the recent OTA update and it failed. Is there anyway to get it to update without wiping everything and doing a return to stock install of some sort?
Bump, I nobody else still has a mofo rooted Turbo? I suppose a factory reset is needed.

I'm not sure, but the problem could be that it's still on the 4.4.4 bootloader. The update script checks just about everything that it can to make sure that you're on stock SU4TL-44 before it decides that it's safe to upgrade. If that's the case, you'll need to flash the SU4TL-44 bootloader. If you want to be 100% sure that the phone will update correctly, restore it to SU4TL-44 using section 0 of this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-t3292684
While you're there, you should unlock if you want to do so. Once you get to SU4TL-49 if you haven't unlocked already, you'll be locked up tight. Permanently.
Thanks I saw this the other day and forgot to hit reply. I also forgot that the mofo exploit retained the 4.4.4 bootloader which explains why it didn't update. I haven't modded my current Turbo so I am giving it to the wife and moving all of her stuff over. I got myself a M8 in the meantime while I mess with the mofo rooted Turbo.
Do you happen to know if I just need to flash the SU4TL-44 stock firmware in stock recovery to return to stock?

EDIT: I misread what you said. No, you can't flash anything other than official OTAs using the stock recovery. Follow the guide. It's the best way to do it and it's pretty easy.
Thanks I will be working on this weekend
