From WWDC Latest Iphone twice as quick apparently, has:-
3Mp camera, shoots video, - yawn
7.2Mbps HSDPA, MMS (if carrier supports it) woohoo
Voice control. (been there said it done it)
Built in Compass (not seen that in WM?)
Promised Battery life looks goog - 9 hrs wifi browsing!!!
Same old style, same old interface, all starting to look a bit "last years thing" to me still it is catching up with some features that WM phones have had for a while.
Mmmmm....
If you go line by line trying to match up features, you'll go nuts... not to mention you'll end up comparing to multiple different HTC/WM phones. And you'll still miss why the iPhone is such a success.
All I can say is the $99 3G model is very very appealing, if I wasn't on the plan of my life (SERO).

yup, i have been saying this for quite a while, i mean they say...
A can do this, B can do that and C can do this other thing... but the iPhone cant do all of them "thats fair...."
i really want to see the Pre vs iPhone duke out (i want to get a Pre but still have time to be converted cuz my contract isnt up in a couple of months)
I have to say one thing apple really did not think about the name here "iphone 3G S". wtf?!?! is S for anyway? second round? if so then just put a 2 at the end like most companies => HTC for example.

the 's' is for speed, since apps run 2x faster the made it 3GS...I agree though, lame name.
Im contemplating getting it though, as much as it pains me to say that.
I want the TP2, but not sure when the release date for AT&T is and I am scared my impatience may get the best of me!
wow! upgraded the OS and the phone runs faster, and some new/add features, and they calling it a NEW PHONE iphone 3Gs! no wonder iphone is for iDIOT! what do think the "i" in iphone stands for? i=iDIOT!
if they do this on windows mobiles, they will have a HUGE lawsuit on their ass!
upgraded Touchpro2 with windows 6.5 with add features, phone runs faster, it' the TP2+ !
upgraded sony x1 with windows 6.5 with add features, phone runs faster, it' Sony Xperia X2 !

I believe that with the upgrade, there are still some things that the iPhone3G still can not do. MMS is one I believe, and obviously the extended battery life would be another (among other things)
I noticed you are ATT, how did you get TP2, did you buy it from europe and unlock it for at&t?

i'm sure there' some features in wm6.5 that wm6.1 can not do, they dont call it a new phone just cus you upgraded the freaking OS with added features!
i'm sure if you upgrade your phone radio (rom), you might have better battery life, u still have the same old phone, NOT a new phone!
calling it a new phone, iphone 3Gs is false adversting!
As with all things apple, it is marketed so well, the point of my post was not to slag off the iphone, (it does after all have many things in its favour) but to point out that apple have an uncanny ability to add features that are old hat an most other platforms (not just WM) and sell them as in some way revolutionary.

Some of you guys are really reaching here. Upgrading a ROM leads to better battery life?
Also, don't forget that before 6.1, every new release required a new phone. I still have a WM5 Moto Q that Moto never upgraded to WM6.
Also, my expensive Touch Pro only records in crappy QCIF
Apple products are all about style and simplicity. Most are made so that your grandma can pickup and use them. If apple took the 3g and raised the price to 120 and called it jphone 3g, it would still sell more than any other smartphone because of the interface. FYI not an apple fanboy, I do own several windows mobile devices and it is my favorite platform. And think about it windows mobile and other os's are spread over several devices, If you want apple's os you only have the iphone, the ipod touch doesn't make cellular network calls.

not a rom, but a radio could give you better battery life / reception etc
pending on the ROM. that is why its good to read which radios have been tested =]
Apple is Great Marketing and medium products (it's not a flame, only reality).
10mins ago I see to TG5 about iPhone 3GS... I haven't see about other Device (only 10 seconds to Nokia and Omnia): Great Marketing!!!
They could sell jPhone without problems
Yeah, their marketing is what makes the difference.
They market things like MMS and Copy/Cut/Paste like they were big changes.
Does it run mulitple applications
Can the iPhone run multiple applications. I dont have much knowledge abt iPhone- Like I am listening to music, browsing wifi and suddenly receive call. While the call is getting recorded(call recorder) access word or excel file or even lookup to email or sms received and on hangup , the call the recorder stops- music continues and you can get back to browsing from where you left.

No Call Recorder (that i know of) but everything else is possible on a stock iPhone.
there's no competition for the difference in plan rate if you scored sprint sero
even on my evdo htc mogul/titan 6800 the opera browser (turbo or mini socket/proxy) gives 7mbps for web page loading
i sense i'm not missing too much except more memory and some hard drive space should you drop the extra $100 for the 32gb iphone
but then again a 16gb microSD card is only $50
slendering down my brick with extended battery to match that of the iphone doesn't justify the price offset i receive for an outdated phone with cheap accessories
it does enough for a device in my pocket to keep me happy
but if money isn't an option...there seem to be just as good options in the wm market
about the only product i am really in desire of from "the other side" is one of their past mac bluetooth keyboards for my wm phone
how you like them apples
Truth is - price point is the key. Look at how many Tilt's were purchased and how many people joined this forum when ATT had them on sale from .01 to 99 dollars.
Hey people could we open an own section for the samsung ativ S? It will soon come out and it would be nice to have it done then.
There is not even a section for the 8X - a phone which is released, and which I have sitting in my hand right now.

I understand why opening a forum for each device might not be worth it given the time to create them, space, etc
but can WP8 at least get a devices forum? Instead of just general, Q&A, dev, & apps, there should be a forum where people can discuss devices and more device specific things.
Having all the phones grouped together is not practical because the L822 and the L928 and the Ativ S are different in terms of battery life and preformance, plus device specific accessories like cases, etc
I don't expect XDA to be on the same level as WPCentral but I should at least be able to do some phone specific discussion
Edit: I just found that there are some device forums http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php?tab=other&os=Windows+Phone
L820,L920,8x and http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2010
but still Ativ S should get a section and there really should be an "other devices" section like with android if we aren't going to have all devices with their own forum
hi
i'm thinking of getting one, whats the user experience like as no stores seem to stock them in Chelmsford, essex. UK.
are they easy to unlock? of is £233 delivered for an unlocked one good value.
User experience, assuming you're asking about the phone in particular and not the OS in general, is good. The combination of good CPU and expandable storage isn't available in any other Windows Phone model right now. The 720p screen is slightly narrower in aspect ratio than the 5:3 ratio that WP7 used, so apps may be stretched a little unevenly, but even if you look for it it's usually not visible. The screen is excellent, with good visibility in a range of light conditions and great color, plus a sufficiently high DPI that even tiny text is clearly legible. I've had no trouble with the pentile layout; the pixels are just too small to see (and I have pretty good eyesight). Battery life is fantastic, although (like most Samsung devices) it prefers to charge off more power than a typical USB port will provide. Still, if I stream music on it all day long, plus email, IM, web browsing, ebooks, short stretches of GPS navigation, and a bit of gaming, it will still have power left when I get home at night and it will charge up overnight off my Surface RT tablet (a more powerful USB port will let it charge much faster). The loudspeaker, headphone audio, and cameras are all respectable but nothing to write home about, although the double-action shutter button (standard on all Windows phones) works very well. The presence of a physical (not-capacitive) Start button means the phone can be woken from sleep by pressing Start, which is easier for me than hitting the actual power button; for some reason, it's on the side of the phone. The chassis feels durable and is comfortable in the hand, yet it's easy to remove the back plate. It is a bit more slippery than my old HD7, but I haven't dropped it yet. The huge screen size makes typing a breeze and also makes it great for reading text or showing pictures / videos to people.
I've had some troubles with WiFi; be aware that if you need absolutely reliable connects-to-anything WiFi, this might not be the phone for you (I have unlimited cellular data, so if a WiFi network doesn't connect properly I just don't bother with it). Cellular data works well and quickly, and has pretty good reception, but I haven't been able to get the WiFi hotspot feature to work yet (wired tethering works but is a bit of a hack). I have once had to reboot the phone because volume controls weren't working correctly; that was annoying. I haven't tried out NFC yet, but it's present.
Beyond that, there isn't much about the phone in particular that isn't also common with other Windows Phone 8 handsets. You may want to go to a store and play with a HTC 8X or a Lumia 920 or similar; that will give you a feel for the OS. Samsung does supply one software feature not found on all Windows phones: an app to block calls automatically. Their Diagnosis app (used for, among other things, wired tethering) is also Samsung-specific.
Please note that my experiences are based on a SIM-unlocked SGH-T899M handset that I bought from Canada. There's at least one other model of Ativ S that will have slightly different specs, and may work better (or worse) on some other networks.
As for unlocking, that depends on what you mean. SIM-unlocking depends on who it's locked to; I just bought an unlocked phone. The official developer unlock (for installing homebrew apps) is easy enough, but requires Windows 8 and a Marketplace Developer registration (the latter typically costs money but can be had for free by students). It also only provides a limited number of apps. A simpler or more complete sideloading unlock has not been discovered yet, never mind the possibilities of either fully unlocking the device to run arbitrary programs and access everything, or installing custom ROMs. While I'd hope that such things will some, they take time and require a dedicated effort to find vulnerabilities.

Do you mean that in settings -----> about you have "Samsung SGH-T899M"????? because I have "Samsung GT-I8750"
I have been a avid android user and supporter for some years now but lately some of the models has started to let me down as time as has started to pass. Presently there are no Android phones that really gets me going and at the same point I would like to try out Windows Phone 8, but then problem comes; which phone to choose >.<
I ideally want one which has a MicroSD card slot, since I have a 64 gig card in my 9305 (SGS3 4g) that I want to transplant over, but hopefully at the same time not being forced to stick with an inferior WinMob model or version compared to what is already around and available. I am living in Europe which naturally also puts a hamper on the available models to me.
But any recommendations?
The top-end Windows Phone handset that also offers microSD support is the Samsung Ativ S. It's basically identical hardware to the GS3, though you might get better performance than was possible with Android (WP7 was better than Android on the same hardware, not sure about WP8). The best WP8 devices in general are going to be the Lumia 92x (920 and the recently-announced 925 and 928) models, but while these come with up to 32GB of internal storage they lack microSD cards, and their CPU/GPU/RAM are basically the same as the Ativ S (resolution is very slightly higher, 1280x768 instead of 1280x720).

Well, do you have a budget in mind? Although the Samsung Ativ S is a good phone, they lack of any particular support from Samsung is damning. As a result, as of now, if you really want a high end Windows Phone which will also get supported from the maker, then that has to be the Lumia 920 (although it doesn't have a card slot). The other option would be to get hold of the Lumia 720 (incredibly sleek as well as having a card slot), though not really high end, but in many opinions, better than the Lumia 820 (which does have a better screen aspect ratio).

Yes that is true. MSFT will send out the updates and they do sport the same features, but what I meant was by the way of differentiation. Nokia with its various apps (especially Here Maps and Here Drive) amongst other stellar apps is really making a difference to the ecosystem. They regularly update their apps, as well as sporting many games and apps which are Nokia exclusive. Just look at the recently announced Hipstamatic app. It will first come to Nokia for an exclusive period.
All I meant to say was, by and far, Nokia is the only phone developer who is taking the ecosystem seriously and furthering its development.
Currently the Ativ S is the only top-tier WP8 phone with an SD card slot, but it is nigh impossible to get in the states, and I'm not even sure what carriers whould support it. Plus, WP8 is an afterthought to Samsung, so don't expect much in the way of support for the phone.
Nokia is a fantastic company, makes great phones and absolutely supports them beyond what any other cell phone company does. Their flagship phones (i.e. the 920 and variants) are unsurpassed, but they lack SD card support.
The highest end Lumia with SD card support is the 820/822, which is flagship minus the camera and big, high-res screen. Performance is at least as good as the 920 series and better than any Android phone.
The 8X is also an excellent phone, not quite up to par with the 920s but still extremely good. It lacks SD card support and the app support Nokia provides, but is more svelte and "fashionable" if you will.
There are two variants of the Ativ S. The SGH-T899M can be imported from Canada (easily and not particularly expensively), pre-SIM-unlocked and with no external (and very minimal internal; you have to go look for it) carrier branding. It works flawlessly on T-Mobile's bands (including their LTE). It will also work on AT&T, not quite as well (not all of AT&T's LTE bands are supported, I think, but some places are) but well enough.
The Nokia 92x line is definitely the "best" aside from the lack of expandable/removable storage. They have the highest-resolution displays, the most internal storage, the best cameras, and the best apps.
If you like swype keyboards, you'll miss them. Otherwise, the only real nitpick I have is haptic feedback not able to be disabled on the permakeys (back, win key, etc). I only got a Windows phone for app development though. My galaxy nexus is still my normal phone, even if Android is a bit more laggy and eats more battery.
Samsung phones are able to disable the feedback using an OEM app. Other phones would be capable of it if we can break out of the sandbox (yet another thing we had in WP7 and are missing in WP8, at least in the current state of homebrew).
Hello guys. I'm watching many reviews about the Lumia lineup and I have to say that I really like it. I was even considering to buy me a Lumia but to do that I have to sell my two phones But I think I gonna do it in the near future maybe but I wanted to ask you, what Lumia would be perfect for a Windows Phone 1st timer? I have 2 Android phones (like said above) and I like them but I have a "big" problem with one of them. When I would sell them I would have ~210$ (I know it's not much money but in my country it is much). Can you write me what are the positives and negatives of having a WP?

I had 3 phones with Android before going on Windows Phone and I think it's a good decision.
Pro WP:
- speed
- very rarely blocked
- after 6 months of use moves as well like begining
- Security is better
- very good camera and navigation apps
- in WP 8.1 (cortana, quiet hours, ..)
Against :
More application in Google store but you will find the usual applications also in WP store
you must wait ~ 1 month to get WP 8.1 oficial update from manufacturers( to have cortana, notification, ....)
if you want to buy nokia is an advantage in construction quality

If it was available in the US(VZW), I would definitely be getting it. But our govt doesn't like Huawei.
It's nice and all but it's not a Note. Plus at $1200 I would have to pass unless there were some kind of trade incentive. I don't trust Huawei enough to give them my personal info either.

I was very interested in the Mate 10 a while ago but the one drawback that the Mate 20 series continues with is no support for WiFi calling, which I rely on due to our limited network coverage.

Performance not good as they claim. After some big problems ( or scandals) they got, I think we need to wait to confirm it good or not.
eMMC instead of UFS on P10/P10+, noisy about Kirin 970 but it not good enough + thermal problem, benchmark cheating ...

Totally agree, all the mfgs & service providers, regardless of country of origin, use the same playbook,no need to fear one any more (or less) than another, regarding safeguarding your privacy/info.
also, no unlocking of the bootloader, have a mate 10 pro that i keep on a lower firmware since if i update i get a newer version of xloader so i can't downgrade without bricking the device
I don't trust Huawei. They cheated on benchmarks, they lied about camera possibilities on P20 Pro (slo-mo). Not enough convinced in what they claim.
Gotta wonder how that 4200 man battery will do. Maybe lies as well...
Huawei I would not touch again even if someone offered one to me. Great hardware crap software. The way that they think that they are Apple is just beyond joke. Now what I mean by that is EMUI is just a poor version of iOS and the way they restrict third party launchers from working on their phones is beyond joke. The amount of people moaning about the performance when they install pixel launchers is crazy.
I had that issue and I just hate the way they try to make you use Huawei Home launcher and scare you with safety notifications. So for me to be back on Samsung and having the note 9 which has a headphone Jack memory and no notch I say thank you very much.
No lte band 71, no wifi calling. No us warranty.
They chose the winner out of specsheets only? Wow. What a review.
I had a P20 Pro and was pretty disappointed in the camera. Sure the Night Mode was awesome but that was it. Otherwise for the most part it produced highly unrealistic images with waaay too agressive HDR/tone mapping. It really looked terrible at times. I found myself having to work against the camera on the P20 Pro to get the photos I wanted. I much prefer the photos my Note 9 gives me.
Also the P20 Pro had horrible optimization of software. Very choppy specially in all Google apps that stutters a lot. The software is overall pretty aggressive in its RAM handling and you won't get all notifications no matter what you do. The developers of the VLC app blocked Huawei phones from downloading their app becuase of their background process restrictions.
I do like Huawei and I've had a few of their phones but I do not like the direction they are taking with their cameras specifically.
