CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android, ChameleonOS and Kinology are all very stable. PacMan has a semi stable build if you download their ROM from 18 October. They are working hard but have not got a sabke build for KFHD yet. JellyBear was good but word is they stopped development so that one is as is. The choice is you're though.

I've used both Chameleon OS and CM10.2. I'd have to say that CM is way more stable. ChaOS was stable, but tended to have SystemUI crashes a lot, and sometimes I had to reboot in order to playback any sort of media. In my opinion you should go with CM10.2.

That's odd, I never have has a single issue with Chameleon OS. I'm using PA now because I like pie functions.

Yeah, I got sick of it. Plus, I didn't like the lime green color and the chameleon icon where the unlocker icon should have been on the lockscreen. I ended up just switching to CM10.2. Oh well. Nothing is perfect.

True that...

Best rom threads are not allowed. Try many roms and then decide what suits you better, i'm sure that by using a rom for a while you can definately tell if it is stable enough for you.

Without play store you'll probably not get it working. Afirehds are really locked down, almost as bad as apple.

sideload
What I have been doing is sideloading. I will download the app onto my phone, backup the app with Astro File Manager, then move the apk to like a shared dropbox account. Once you have the .apk you can install the app. :good: Have you got the app yet? I skimmed through and didnt look.
I side load all day. I've frozen all of Amazon's apps and replaced a such of the system as I can. Using a different launcher I ow have an almost Android kindle lol

If that's vanilla "PBS KIDS Video (Kindle Tablet Edition)" then I can report that it works just fine on Nook HD+. I've added it to my amazon library, too bad we have to go around "incompatibility" (as amazon appstore reports) like that.
I wish there was more people interested in this app for other android tablets, we could start a petition to pbs or something.
Is there a way for me to download my "(Kindle Tablet Edition)" apps without owning a kindle device? like downloading it to an emulator of some sort and copying the apk over?

Clearly amazon doesnt want all amazon apps to run on other android devices (technically they all should). I sometimes think theyd prefer people not to know that kindle is an android device simultaneously promoting amazon appstore with android apps, depending on situation with profit in mind.

I ran into the same issues... I wonder if there's some loophole. Back when I initially tried it, I screwed around with build.prop to change the model name or something, but that didn't work. Oh well. I'll just have to use their mobile website.
No, if it is specified for a Kindle, a Kindle must download it. It won't even show up in the app store APK if it realizes your not using a Kindle.

So at one point wifi on the tablet went out and I got a browser page "Website not available"
http://pbskids.org/video?kindle
Seems like the whole app is nothing more than just a browser opening a website, which is still pretty cool because that way I can put the app into Kid Mode. I wish I could do that with video files on the tablet.
Is there anyone that could grab the reading rainbow apk off the kindle store for me? It would be great! Thanks. Also, anyone get the Amazon Video apk to work with custom ROMs? Any info would be great.

You are right, there is not a version of CM10 for the HD yet. And on stock, that navigation bar on the bottom is permanent. You cannot disable it.

It seems that most of the development in this area is on the HD+. I think I've read that the HD has different HW......

[ROM] Ubuntu Touch Preview [02/27: Alpha Update #1]

** Work-In-Progress: Ubuntu Touch Preview is just that.. a PREVIEW. Do not complain about missing features, etc. The OS isn't nearly ready for primetime. **
THIS REQUIRES THE 2ND-BOOTLOADER/RECOVERY ALREADY BE INSTALLED ON YOUR DEVICE. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT, THEN START HERE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100963
Curious as to how the Ubuntu Touch Preview looks? Why not load it on your Kindle Fire 2 and see for yourself.
CHANGES:
[02/27] Fixed the UI DPI settings. Needs to re-flash following the instructions below.
Instructions [CHANGED 02/27]:
1. Make a Titanium Backup and/or backup in recovery of your current Android. This preview is fun to play with but not a replacement for something as developed as CM 10.1
2. Download the Kindle Fire2 Mini-Android base for Ubuntu Touch and place it on your device:
[02/27] http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/otter2/ubuntu-phablet/phablet-20130227-otter2.zip
md5sum: c7d61c7a4c1ecb8f4118e5916ad75417
3. Download the latest Ubuntu Touch Preview Filesystem .zip from Ubuntu:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip
If the above link is broken, use this link for a full listing of the current build files (download the quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip .. soon to be raring-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip):
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/
4. Reboot into recovery.
4a. Wipe system and Factory Reset (wipes data/cache).
IMPORTANT:
4b. Install the quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip FIRST, and then the phablet-2013xxxx-otter2.zip SECOND.
5. Reboot and Enjoy
NOTE: The preview comes pre-loaded with several users in the login screen and they have data to browse around with. Move to the "Guest" account and tap on area where it tells you to login.
WHAT WORKS:
Display
Touch screen
WHAT DOESN'T WORK:
There's so much that is still being implemented into the Touch version of Ubuntu, that this list could get pretty long.
[FIXED 02/27] Need to adjust the GRID_UNIT_PX in /home/phablet/.bashrc to be slightly smaller so that the on-screen keyboard fits correctly.
Oddly no WIFI yet. Still troubleshooting.
No sound
Barely any sensors other than touchscreen work. IE: no rotation, etc. Ubuntu WIP issue.
No HD codecs (still being worked on) Ubuntu WIP issue.
No screen timeout / auto blank -- becareful when walking away from the device. Need to press the power button to turn the screen off. Ubuntu WIP issue.
RELATED UBUNTU TOUCH LINKS:
(Some of these describe how to install it on devices -- you can ignore those instructions and follow the above for the Kindle Fire 2)

Just tried this out. Very cool but looks big for screen size. Maybe could change screen density. But very neat. Is this the closest to tablet interface it gets?

It shouldn't be that big if you flash the filesystem first and then the phablet-######-otter2.zip afterward (it fixes the DPI setting in ubuntu).

Very cool. Downloading now on my slow arse DSL. Will update this post with any comments.
Much man love Hashcode!
Edit: ok, back on sgt7.
I found the OS to have great potential and many of the ideas for the interface seem cool. That being said- i felt really far away from the core system and disappointed that i cant even find a basic terminal app so without ssh'ing from my pc.. As many people have said on these forums the biggest thing missing is some kind of settings program.
This REALLY DOES have potential though. I'm sure once the port-a-thon slows down and everybody has the hardware working ubuntu will show us a bit more (i hope!).
Thanks again Hashcode! Great work so far. I look forward to seeing your AND ubuntu's updates.
And to the common man (like myself, i guess lol):
Don't crap your pants on the install. It takes an eternity to extract the tarball.

This is an excellent design and the fluidity of the OS this early on is amazing. I'm looking forward to later on when there's more development. I might try porting this to my galaxy exhibit lol. Excellent work hashcode.
Thanks Hashcode, Just hope T Mobile GS3 gets this going as well so I can have it on both. If not I'm gonna get myself a Nexus 4. Just looks awesome.
I must be doing something wrong.
This boots, but I just get the front screen with "Search" a "Mail" icon, "Sound" icon, "WiFi" icon, "TIME", then a big circle with "14 tweets received." It doesn't respond to touch and there is no login screen.
I installed the phablet zip then the otter zip.
I wiped all cache's, data, system, internal storage, and did a data format.

What will it he capable of? EVERYTHING a linux distro can do on the desktop eventually. It'll run android apps, linux apps, most windows apps through wine. You'll be able to write and compile code on it.
I mean.. To answer your question with another question:
What can you do on a full linux distro on your pc that you can't do on android?
Dont try to compare this to firefox os or others... This is NOT a skin. Its a different OS.

[Q] Kinology 3.1

Since I can't post on the actual Kinology thread in the dev section I was curious if anyone can help me.
Looking to root and install a custom ROM on my KFhd7 and I liked Kinology from what I've seen,
My question is... does it look like a stock android afterwards? or does it/can it maintain the Kindle "carousel" and still have access to the playstore and the other tweaks and additions.
I already have an SG3 geared and customized to the teeth and my Kindle is just used for reading and movies. MAYBE a game every now and then.
I just much prefer to have the kindle carousel.
Appreciate any replies.
It comes with go launcher but the carousel is completely still in tact and can be default

Kinology is the only ROM that has the option to flip to stock launcher. If you try some other ROM in the future, you can get apps that will allow you to use all the fun features of the Kindle's except Prime movie streaming. Just some info.

Kindle Fire Black Wallpaper quick fix

ok so this isnt a fix actually just got your attention. it is a work around by just an app. not alot know of vire launcher and if you just install vire launcher your wallpaper works instantly. there are also a couple others out there but i forgot their name offhand.
If it's not a fix question it don't belong here.

Last I checked it does, still sometimes has random glitchyness that I cannot pinpoint why. Do you know if xposed framework works with amazon os? I may not know java to be make a plugin but it seems to me an easier fix would be to override the boolean with a xposed module, though I would be a bit jealous if someone did considering the work I put into making that fix work safely.

Xposed framework does work with kindle 3rd gen KFSOWI. I am not sure what to do with it though lol. I did have a game that closed out once opening and I changed the resolution and set it to force auto rotation and it works now
Last I checked there's not a wallpaper fix for xposed framework. I would create one but I don''t know java. Probably would work better than my current fix but Idk since the idea has never been tested. Though I am playing with a cool idea to safely install 2nd bootloader and twrp on 1st gen HD's in a much more cool and automated method using an apk, might even be easier than fireflash. Depends on if I need to edit some c code or not of something that exists already.
