Hello guys,
I'm about to jump on the g1 train, currently trying to decide between white or black Dream. I have only seen the black in person (still looking for the white ;P) and there arent that many reviews or opinions posted on the net (that I could found at least) as to what the difference between the two (other than the color of course) and their build quality is.
So, please post your opinions on the matter. I'm pretty sure there are quite a few users in here with the white version. Black seems more popular, for some reason its also more expensive in most shops. But is it also more robustly built?
The one solid difference I've been able to read about is that the white phone doesnt have the rubberized back the black one has. Is this true? What about the quality of the plastic used? Are both solid, or is one "weaker" than the other? How do both feel after a few months of use? Is the white one a magnet for dirt?
Thank you guys
Cheers

i dunno. I have seen an all white battery cover offered in a few other countries. If you do go white, you might want to look into the white battery cover. it looks slick
definanetly get a black one with the nice matte finish(it look the best) i have a white one and the paint is chipping around the memory stick slot, the chin and it is not very scratch resistant
even if you dont take the outer color into consideration, the keyboard on the black one is the best...the white and brown G1 have a keyboard that is harder to read in daylight.
black one! you can actually SEE the keyboard
Amen... White looks nice, but goodluck trying to see what youre typing if the sun is shining on it.

There is a way around the problem if you use "Backlight Off" from the market. You do however need root for it to work.....
funny you guys say that about the keyboard. i find it very hard to use in the sun, hardly see the keys at all. as far as build quality gos.
i love my white G1, however. it has a slight imperfection in regard to the underside of the chin where the backplate clicks onto on one side. it has a very small gap making that side not sit flush with the body of the phone. its not enough to notice unless you look for it but it drives me insane. the problem is worse when i use the extended battery making the whole thing feel flimsy and creaky. i have found myself wondering if i made the right choice getting a white one over a black.
I have the Bronze and the key board sucks outside wish I would have got the black.. But I still love my G1
Wow thanks a lot for the replies. White does look a lot better in pics (in my opinion at least ). Seems I'll take the black one tho
Thanks again, really helpful replies!
Cheers,
Niko
White one IS better looking.
I've got a black one, and hope I had chosen a white one... and most of my friends with the white one would say the same for the black one. Don't care much about the 'finish' or 'keyboard', it's all the same, just go for the one you personally prefer.
I would def stick with the black
Black unless you want to replace the keyboard. Even with backlight off on my bronze the keys were unreadable at times. With my black one it's looking for a program that turns back light on without a keypress.
I've got a black G1 and a friend of mine has got a white one.
Build quality is comparable i think, but there several other factors which make me favor the black G1:
- The 'rubbery' finish of the battery cover provides superiod grip when holding the G1 in your hand.
- The keyboard (even when lit) is better readable on a black g1 than on a white one. probably because the contrast between black keys/white characters on the keys is bigger.

in tmobile UK they offer the white g1 with white battery cover and white keys on the keyboard. but silver middle.
tmobile us is half white and from the keyboard down its silver. the back cover does however have the rubbery feel.
the white g1 however chips soooo easily =\ i have the white one. and i was reading somewhere that the first white g1s that were released in te US had the same whtie battery cover as the UK one,but were quickly recalled becuz of paint chipping issues.
i bought the black g1 first, but returned it for the white g1 since white is mroe visually appealing to me. however the white g1 keybaord sucks ass in daylight. white backlight on a silver keyboard just makes it hard to see.
some black g1s had the silver middle and keyboard, but nowadays tmobile stores sell a full black g1. the keyboard is actually a lot easier to see.but i hate the black g1 matte finish.
you can buy ZAGG invisible shield to make the black g1 have a shiny look and also protect it from scratches and chips.. or buy it for the white g1 to protect it from scratches and chips as well.
i plan to however to buy a white battery cover and install the zagg invisible shield(btw zagg offers lifetime warranty so you can easily get a replacement for free)
Hi all,
I know we will have to touch and feel & wait for through reviews when HTC One comes out. However, just like many of you, I pre-ordered one and I can't decide between silver and black. To be honest, I like silver and black and I don't think both colors can't go wrong. I am planning to use HTC One either black or silver without case nor film on the back or side. Which color do you think more prone to scratch based on previous experience? We know Iphones have almost identical material with similar color scheme.
get the silver one if you want scratch proof.
Silver will not show scratches. Black will show deep scratches, but HTC has much experience with aluminum phones unlike Apple, so they make sure to have the treatment go very deep to prevent the bare metal from showing.
No i both phones are anodized but the they did something else on top of the anodized aluminum to apply the black color. Then they applied some coating to avoid scratches. In short the black one isnt pure anodized aluminum. Search the video of the interview of htc's hardware designer

thats what HTC used last year, a process called Micro Arc Oxidation....... so imagine now with new process
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teWhc6Ysflc
Micro Arc Oxidation is garbage. pure anodization is the best way.
Cool! So it won't scratch off and show red like the OG evo

Hey all, I dropped my black one against some metal and the back got scratched to the point where you can see the aluminum underneath. Anybody have any experience with this and how to possibly hide it so it's not as obvious? I was thinking a black marker might cover it up but I don't want to get the wrong tint of black and make it look even worse.

I've seen recommendations for black markers. I'm surprised you can actually see the silver aluminum. Thought they had some kind of multi layer black thing going on. Hmm.
Do try the black marker on a VERY small area. wait for it to dry and see whether it works well.
Otherwise if you're still within 30 days of ur phone's purchase. Find even the most minor of defects and bring it in to a store. Maybe they'll accept an exchange.. :S That's all I can recommend :'(
Wait to get other replies first though! Maybe someone else has better experiences (I'm here with a silver One)
I have the black One and tried using a black permanent marker to cover a mark at the top edge. I did not really care about colour differences since my scratched is very small, but my makeup did stay even I waited until it was dried to handle the phone.
I have heard people saying a marker bought from halfords, that's a car shop by the way if you are not in UK. The pen is used to hide car imperfection and can stand rain, dust, and etc, so it must be much tougher to remove.
If you are not sure about colour, yes, I would suggest try a small area first, but if you do have a long scratch it would be difficult to find the perfect colour.
Keep up updated if you find a good pen, so I will stock one as well.

Sounds painful
Finally worked up the courage to buy some paint and go ahead with the paint job. Thought I'd give you guys an update. I bought some Tamiya XF-1 paint, it's supposed to be matte black ink for plastic models. So after the drop my phone looked like this.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1308152/phone paint job/IMG_20130531_210230.jpg
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1308152/phone paint job/IMG_20130531_210315.jpg
I used a toothpick to pick up a drop of the paint and blob it on each scratch. Then I used a moist kitchen toilet to scrub away the paint that didn't get into the scratches. End result is this.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1308152/phone paint job/IMG_20130531_211936.jpg
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1308152/phone paint job/IMG_20130531_212012.jpg
Overall I'm pretty happy with the result. You can still see the silver surface pop up at some angles and I'll probably do another few passes of the paint and scrubbing to try and get it perfect.
I got a chance today to get hold of both variations. Other than the obvious color on the back, there are several subtle differences:
1. Earpiece color, black vs white
2. Side finish, matte vs glossy
3. Back finish, soft-touch vs regular matte plastic (contrary to what Engadget reported)
I was going to grab the white one for the look, but after getting them in my hands, I changed my mind. That soft touch back on the black one is really comfortable to touch (I don't plan on using a case anyway). Also, I prefer the earpiece to be black.
Also take a look at this post:

Weak, I didn't know that (about the finish on the back) or I too would've opted for black.
So the conclusion is that white has the better looking and the black is more comfortable for using?

16gb white was all that was available when i hit the play store yesterday so that's what i ordered. i like the black / white combo on this device and ordered the white spiegen ultra fit case to show it off.
won't really matter how the back compares against the black once the case is on there.
*shrugs.

Well yes, this is my opinion, although IMO white is just slightly more appealing if it also have a soft touch back.
I guess having soft touch on white is either very difficult, or will make it stain/turn yellow easily
I always believed that the white one will not have soft touch, until I read the Engadget report...but it turns out to be false
I have a white GS3 and love white devices but after never being able to get a case or bumper that can stay clean, I opted for the black Nexus 5.
Man, if I had known the white wasn't a soft-touch stain magnet, I may have considered it more. That white ear piece grill is ugly, though.
Now that you mention it it makes sense that they wouldnt go soft touch with the white. Makes me long for the black one now. Im not usually one to put my phone is a case, but I think without the softback I might go with a case this time around and see how it works. Regardless, they both look like great pieces of hardware

Man thats disappointing. I was looking forward to the white. Did the back cover feel like the same type of plastic on the white HTC HERO? I Wish I could get hands on both. I was really up for the white but the ear piece looks silver in pics and I thought it would really detract from the gorgeous screen always catching your eye.
Shame they really should have documented that there was a difference in the two models and how they are finished.
Also how did the glossy sides feel of the white one? Im assuming the white is aimed stereotypically at the female market hence the glossy glossy sides.

I don't know how it compares to Hero... My first Android device is the GNex. It feels similar to white Note 3's back.
The sides shouldn't make that much difference in feel, I guess (I didn't check that out).

Not that bad from my limited testing. I tried pressing my finger on it, no obvious print; although there are slight smudges from (presumably) the previous person.

I've got it in hand and it is really good looking, the back is a soft touch plastic but it is different to the black. The black is identical to the 2013 N7, where as the white is smoother and less absorbent, but still very comfortable.
Let's put it this way, in was stood with the black in one hand and the white in the other, could have had either and I walked away with the white

ALL the phones/tablet he show in the comparison have greasy prints all over
Even the two-year old phone I use everyday is much cleaner...
Yeah looking at YouTube vids the white is soft touch. The sides are definitely glossy I actually think it looks more premium than the black.
However the white earpiece cover is freaking unforgivable in my eyes who thought that was a good idea. Its so freaking distracting.
It may be good so you can quickly pick up the phone the right way up but coming from a gnex my eye is drawn to it since its the same size as the notification light on my nexus.
Also watching any video on this and your always going to be drawn to the white dot. If they were willing to do that they may as well have made the whole thing white. The point in the black front is to stop glare or light reflection so as not to distract from the screen. This does the opposite.
It reminds me of a mini galaxy tab when it first came out. I liked that and I like this just not the white earpiece. Silly design feature.

Primary reason i got the white one. Fingerprints. Used to wash my S5 all the time because of visible fingerprints.
I kinda regret getting the Black one because the white one looks far more premium but I'm still happy because it's just an amazing phone!

It's weird tho, I've always had a black phone and they all attracted fingerprints like crazy! But with this phone I barely see anything. And my hands/fingers are mad oily most of the time. I guess the Ringke Fusion and a tempered glass screen protector help out a lot!

A high end oleophobic tempered glass protector will surely help. Especially if you put one on the back too. Been looking around just that in my country woth no luck. I dont use any casing so even on white i get a lot of prints, though unnoticeable unless you look close.
Regarding fingerprints, just put the phone in your front pocket. After walking around for a few minutes it will come out clean and shiny. ? Regarding the color, go with black.

Gold is best. Best, best, best!
green
Red
I like the red-orange color most (my last one was docomo version in orange color, very nice color but I have to sell it because the signal problem (later I know how to fix and then regret alot ( ) now I'm using green, it's ok too. The last color I would choose is black, too original, nothing special about it and come along with alot of fingerprint...
I love the green one, second is the red-orange.
Thought the question was "white or black"....
Hi,
I've got a white one and I love it. Beautiful, elegant, not a dust-magnet.
I don't think the white one for women. I used to wearing white shirt.
by Avers
Black phones always do "cheaper", more plastic...
However, the white one got a problem. In a dark room, the edge of the screen has kind of a halo around.
The brightness of the screen (even with 10% luminosity) tend to light the white glass case.. Kinda annoying and ugly.
I would have definitely chosen red over any other color if only my carrier had any red Z3Cs back in October. I got white one and it is not as pleasing as I thought it would be. Black is much prettier.
I love the black one. It looks slimmer if you ask me and i love it when the screen is of how the front turns into one shiny glass surface.
I have the black one and like it. However, I really did like the red one but it was out-of-stock when I was ready to purchase. Red sure it different.
I miss the Royal-Purple from the old Xperia lines.
This time around I chose Mint-Green, not only because it's my favorite color but that so I can flash my phone at my enemies and blind them from its color!
