New Look - PaintJobs

A couple of months ago I bought my first PPC , a Wizard... I bought it second hand, so the paint is a little...oh well, a little missing I want to repaint it so this is why I started this thread.
Did anybody else painted his ? If yes, please post pcitures and a "How to" would be nice.
-What kind of paint?
-Any problems or even better, how not to ruin your Wizard...
Before I bought paint and stuff...I tried a little in Photoshop so I make up my mind about collors and style.
Here are a few ...clues ...I still didn't made up my mind.

I like the black with silver buttons one but the red one would be great with the guava bubbles theme.....

I actually work at Micheals Arts and Crafts.
I have thought about it several times, but I have the 8125 version, so there isn't much to paint.
IF you were to try, I would recommend plastic paint with a glaze. But I don't know 100% if it'd work.
I wanna color mine, but like stated, I don't wanna ruin it.
Obviously you'd have to take it apart because if you didn't then you'd have key sticking problems.

I'm pretty sure that you'll have to tear it all apart. I have done this once...when I bought it, my display was scratched, so I fixed it with some fine sanding and a chemical solution(some kind of acid).
I read about other that painted their stuff...I'm not a native in english...so I don't understand all things...like someone said he used "Dupli-Colors Grey Primer, Gloss Black and Crystal Clear" ...what is that ?
Is there a shop that sells some paint especially for plastic ?...
I'm thinking about ... Pearl Glossy White and very shiny Gloss Black

I would prefer a camo one I tend to be different. I asked a friend of mine and he said that he had to take his apart to do it. I would not like to do this, but for fashion sake I may have to.

Dupi-Colors is a brand of paint here in the states that are made to match automotive colors. They come in either spray cans or small bottles for touchup. Hope this helps BTW the glossy white and gloss black sounds real nice. Keep us updated on how it goes if you decide to do this and of course take plenty of notes and photos of the process.

For painting plastic, the best thing to use is vinyl dye. You can get it at any automotive store. It comes in a spray can. Its a very thin liquid that is absorbed by the plastic so the color is deeper than the surface. Scratches will not show as a different color. This also makes it almost idiot proof. Its really hard to force it to run.
If you are going to paint it after that, fine, but it will make the painting much easier and if something does scratch it, the surface underneath will be the matching color.
Keep in mind that with vinyl dye you can only go darker than the orignial color. It would work great for black. Using red on the silver plastic would result in a sliver/red color.
I have used this stuff on many plastic items and it always works perfectly. Paint is great for a super high gloss, but too much of a pain for anything that you will have in hand often. Paint adds layers over the plastic. Vinyl dye just changes its color.
I suggest you look up some pc case modding instructions. They are the masters of painting and dying plastic.

Okay, so I delayed the whole thing a couple of days. Now today, when I want to the car paint store, I was looking for Black Gloss and sidef or pearl White, unfortunately they didn't have the white.
So ... it toked me about 5 hours, but it's ready. I left the buttons, for later next week, when I will go again at the store.
I bought a Gloss Black by Dupli Colours (a spray can)
I have applied 2 layers of paint, I will apply another one next week when I get the pearl white.
I'm very satisfied of how it came out, trust me. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures before , too cought up in the game but you can see "remains" of what it once was , only by looking at the upper buttons.
Sorry for the quality of the pictures, it's been a while since I've last used a camera
By the way, I also painted the mouse, because it was geting rusty...All is Black and Silver

I forgot to mention, My mouse's and Wizard's original colour were all grey silver, so it was kinda difficult to paint black over silver

You are very brave
I have been thinking about doing this myself.
If I may give some constructive criticism.
Painting from a spray can is a very delicate process.
I can see by the pics that the surface was not prepped 100%.
Try this
1. Use very fine water sand paper and smooth all areas to be painted, they must be supper smooth
2. Be sure no dust or stray dirt on surfaces
3. Use a plastic primer for first coat
4. When you spray use a small amount of spray per coat (your first coat must only just be visible, It must look like a fine dust layer on the plastic)
5. Let it dry for 5 hours at least (If you paint over a non dry layer it stops the paint from curing properly and it will chip or scratch off) Then sand again using super fine water paper then apply next coat.
If done right you will only start to cover all areas completely after 4th or 5th coat. THE BIGEST KILLER OF PAINT JOBS IS HASTE. Take your time, you need to spend a few days to get the proper finish.
6. Do 5 or 6 super fine coats and then 2 coats of clear gloss (same process between each coat.
Always be sure paint can is well shaken and use a paper napkin to clean the spray nozzle between each pass.
If you are in a cold damp climate drying time can be as long as 8 hours.
There is a difference between dry to the touch and cured paint.

And I acted as you said. First layer very thin (very very thin) and so on.
I would say that no1 enemy is the dust. I have washed the parts and used fine sand paper. The spray that I used was dry in 10 minutes. And still, like I said, I hate dust
I already said that the job is not over yet. If I was going to apply a matte color, it would have been easy, but with gloss...it's different.

I'm not arguing, i'm curious, because .... it's really shiny and smooth. Perhaps you meant the mouse, because there you are almost right. I don't know why, but it's surface is not as smooth as the wizard's ... mabe because I used more paint...anyhow, it still looks great, glossy.. Sorry that the pictures don't satisfy you, to be honest, I don't like them either.
The only thing that I was not so happy about is that I didn't focus enough on the small parts , like sides and ends ...anyhow, I will know better next time

Flat Black MDA

Well the factory warranty ran out so why not paint it! Here it is in a flat black. I really, really like the look of it. But the bad part is...the paint that I looked all over town for...is worthless. I used the Krylon Fusion that's supposed to freaking bond to the plastic and not even require sanding. However I used 2000 grit sandpaper to just give it something to grip on to. Then following the instructions it says to wait 7 days for it to become fully chip resistant. Not only does it chip...easily...the paint comes off! The first time I put it back together after waiting a week...I made a call and of course the oil from my face got on the front bezel and screen. No biggie I thought...I wiped off all the smudges with my shirt...and the paint came off onto my shirt! I couldn't believe it. So I'll have get this paint off and redo this phone with a much better paint. Anybody have any suggestions for a flat black?

Haven't tested as i'm not that skilled (i think) and phone's still under warranty.

Paint rubbing off on corner

My phone is a couple of weeks old and the paint on one corner has already rubbed (or has been scratched) off leaving the shiny aluminum exposed. Has anyone else got this issue or have any bright ideas to restore the matt black color? I tried a Sharpie but it didn't stick.

Humm, this is worrying. I hope it's a fluke

Got a spot of aluminium as well in the top left corner.
Only 1mm in diameter, but still... not too good after about 10 days of use.

WoW... I hope these are just two isolated cases, or some bad serie...
Believe me, if this happens to mine, it will be the very last time I buy a HTC. You can write my words in stone.

Not good news!! I had this same problem with my HTC 3600P... it looked like crap after 6 months... crap black finish rubs off easy.. specially if in a humid country like jamaica.. really really bad news for the diamond! thanks guys.. will keep a close eye on it and try and get a case of it ASAP.

I have also got paint rubbing off both top corners, it's slowly getting worse. Not happy!!! Few weeks old. Any body know a good paint match? Think I could fix it..

Im sure that having your keys and coins in the same pocket with your phone it will get scratched.

Can't make out the corners of mine through the fingerprints even though every night I wipe my fingers on my jeans after my chips! What about proper Indian ink?

Forget the Sharpie people it comes off in 2 days!!...

same has happened to mine, metal finish has worn off on top right corner, have tried permanent marker and also a little tin of humbrol satin black enamel paint which worked the best, but even that rubs off!!! gotta say im dissapointed with the finish of the phone, my touch dual still looks new after 6 months.

I already ordered my diamond and I'm expecting it within 10 days ... I already ordered Overlay plus for the screen and front buttons and Invisible shield for the back and sides.. I was not planning to apply the invisible shield from day one but after what you guys wrote I think I will...

No paint rubbing off here either and it's thrown in a pocket with no case and has landed on the floor with no damage.

My wife put it in her purse with a bunch of keys, but luckily it is only the screen protector. I can't blame her for the paint however, that was all me.
Playing ball with my Diamond wasn't one of the functions on the phone that I was aware of. Does the G sensor help you hit better?

Oh no... this happend to me to my old wizard, but the paint lasted for at least 6 months before scratching. I hope my $700 phone has a good paint Job.

Loose sides?

I got a Nook Color recently. I've noticed its sides were kinda flimsy. Is this normal? I understand this isnt meant to be built like a tank but mine is kinda loose. Also when even applying a little amount of pressure I see the screen get affected (pressure on screen itself.)
Return? Or is it something common?

I've read a few posts about a creakey bezel. Luckily mine was not. The only imperfection I have is the black plastic that surrounds the n key is not flush with the screen on the right side but flush on the left.
Even more discouraging were the stories about dead / stuck pixels. Since I only had the before mentioned issue, I'm keeping mine.
So, although I believe B&N will take the unit back and exchange, if it doesn;t bother you that much and all else is well, I'd say keep it and enjoy it.

the front of my brand new nook comes almost completely off and snaps right back on

.Same here, picked up the black silicone case and it covers the sides and makes it feel like one piece constructio(no help on the screen issue around the n),but makes it feel sturdy. And keeps it simple.Bought the official B&N for $20,I know they are five bucks on line but in my experience after market seldom fits like the "real deal" and after slapping it on I didn't want to take it off

Mine creaks in the upper left corner. The back is somewhat lose in that area too. I haven't noticed any pressure on the screen though.

[Q] Build quality / scratched paint

I've had my lovely Xperia T for almost 2 weeks now and I've got a few concerns about the build quality and I'd like to see if I'm the only one with these issues:
1) I've noticed a few places on the back panel which exhibit a certain amount of creaking when I apply slight pressure. The worst areas are at the top left of the device behind the notification LED and between the SIM/Micro SD panel and the power button. This sound is quite irritating to me, especially for a brand new device.
2) There are a few areas along the edge of the matte black panel where the matte paint have been scratched off. Two of the corners have slight paint wear and around the headphone jack. Under the matte paint is a shiny black surface and it seems (so far) to be affecting the sharper edges or where the matte panel meets the metallic bezel. I'll try to take photos, but it's very small at the moment and might not be picked up due to it's dark colour.
Like I said, I've only had this phone less than a fortnight and it's already showing signs of wear even though I'm very careful with my devices.
Do any of you have any experiences like this?

Had mine for 2 and half weeks and have no sign of even being used. Don't have it in a case or anything. Where did you get it from.

Yep about to ask the same thing here... I cant believe that after 2 weeks of normal usage back matte covering is starting to peel at the corners. Its some kind of spray over a glossy plastic. Had galaxy ace for over a year and that stayed like new. Was very upset with this, so I ordered thin hard plastic case to cover that s***.
I got the phone from O2 ireland. James Bond and what not...but very disappointed as for the price.

Mine is exactly as you described it. Paint started to peel off at the top corners and the creak when pressed on the left corner. Really disappointed with Sony's built quality. Also the factory installed screen protector is showing some marks/light scratches. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove it as I would like to replace it with aftermarket ones. It seems to be glued to the screen.

I have not removed it from the xperia t yet, but I have removed it from my past xperia devices with no problem at all, but it does need a knack to take it of

I've been reading into this 'shatter proof' layer and I'd be curious to find out if anyone here has removed theirs already? How does it affect dust/smudges etc? I'm naturally a bit hesitant to attack my phone just yet.
A note on the creaking case; I've found a rather unprofessional way to resolve it and it's reduced the noise significantly. It's possible to wedge a thin piece of paper between the back panel and the bezel, so I trimmed a piece small enough to go ask the way inside as far as it can go and gently pushed it out of sight using a craft knife. I used a post-it note and made a strip about 1mm wide and 5mm long and this seemed to do the job.

Not so sure its a "Shatter proof" layer or just to keep any broken glass stuck together so you dont cut yourself. It may give some protection against shattering but as I have said before, I removed it from my x10 and my neo with no adverse effects at all. Still to do it yet on my T. The reason eing, soon that layer gets scratched and dull, then I will take it off and have a brand new screen, similar pricicple to the rip offs the F1 drivers use on their visors.

Just removed my built-in/factory-fitted screen protector or whatever you want to call it :laugh:
Gave it a good clean as it was very slightly tacky and now it looks much slicker with the screen off... it seems to attract less dust and it isn't as smear-prone as before. I prefer the naked glass feel and it seems ever so slightly more responsive. Kinda glad I took the plunge after being too chicken to do it lol

Good for you!! Did mine also today using a credit card. Started at the top where the speaker is as it had the least resistance. Came off quite easily.

Are the front-panel logos on the Xperia T on the glass itself or on the shatterproof sheet? In other words, did the logos come off along with the sheet?

The sony and xperia logo remain on the phone after I took off the factory fitted screen protector

Silver sticker around camera lens.
A week in with my Xperia T and the sticker around camera lens has peeled away. Anyone else have same problem? Perhaps I'll need silver model paint in it's place.

had my xperia T for about 2 months now, i have been very careful with it, it hasnt been droped, or against anything sharp, the only thing it has had is the pulling in and out of my pocket every time i use it, as any phone should be designed to do, and the paint on all 4 corners is wearing off, mainly on the left side, i belive this to be the angle that it usually is in my jeans pocket causing it to scratch.
as a matter of intrest whats the cover on warenty for something like this? because the manufacture could say its not their fault,
