[Q] Build quality / scratched paint - Sony Xperia T, TL, TX, V

I've had my lovely Xperia T for almost 2 weeks now and I've got a few concerns about the build quality and I'd like to see if I'm the only one with these issues:
1) I've noticed a few places on the back panel which exhibit a certain amount of creaking when I apply slight pressure. The worst areas are at the top left of the device behind the notification LED and between the SIM/Micro SD panel and the power button. This sound is quite irritating to me, especially for a brand new device.
2) There are a few areas along the edge of the matte black panel where the matte paint have been scratched off. Two of the corners have slight paint wear and around the headphone jack. Under the matte paint is a shiny black surface and it seems (so far) to be affecting the sharper edges or where the matte panel meets the metallic bezel. I'll try to take photos, but it's very small at the moment and might not be picked up due to it's dark colour.
Like I said, I've only had this phone less than a fortnight and it's already showing signs of wear even though I'm very careful with my devices.
Do any of you have any experiences like this?

Had mine for 2 and half weeks and have no sign of even being used. Don't have it in a case or anything. Where did you get it from.

Carphone Warehouse UK. I can live with these small paint chips but I'm concerned it'll only get worse with time

Yep about to ask the same thing here... I cant believe that after 2 weeks of normal usage back matte covering is starting to peel at the corners. Its some kind of spray over a glossy plastic. Had galaxy ace for over a year and that stayed like new. Was very upset with this, so I ordered thin hard plastic case to cover that s***.
I got the phone from O2 ireland. James Bond and what not...but very disappointed as for the price.

Mine is exactly as you described it. Paint started to peel off at the top corners and the creak when pressed on the left corner. Really disappointed with Sony's built quality. Also the factory installed screen protector is showing some marks/light scratches. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove it as I would like to replace it with aftermarket ones. It seems to be glued to the screen.

I have not removed it from the xperia t yet, but I have removed it from my past xperia devices with no problem at all, but it does need a knack to take it of

I've been reading into this 'shatter proof' layer and I'd be curious to find out if anyone here has removed theirs already? How does it affect dust/smudges etc? I'm naturally a bit hesitant to attack my phone just yet.
A note on the creaking case; I've found a rather unprofessional way to resolve it and it's reduced the noise significantly. It's possible to wedge a thin piece of paper between the back panel and the bezel, so I trimmed a piece small enough to go ask the way inside as far as it can go and gently pushed it out of sight using a craft knife. I used a post-it note and made a strip about 1mm wide and 5mm long and this seemed to do the job.

Not so sure its a "Shatter proof" layer or just to keep any broken glass stuck together so you dont cut yourself. It may give some protection against shattering but as I have said before, I removed it from my x10 and my neo with no adverse effects at all. Still to do it yet on my T. The reason eing, soon that layer gets scratched and dull, then I will take it off and have a brand new screen, similar pricicple to the rip offs the F1 drivers use on their visors.

Mine creaks as does my wife's Xperia T. Really annoying at first, but I got a hard case from Amazon UK and its stopped most of it.

Just removed my built-in/factory-fitted screen protector or whatever you want to call it
Gave it a good clean as it was very slightly tacky and now it looks much slicker with the screen off... it seems to attract less dust and it isn't as smear-prone as before. I prefer the naked glass feel and it seems ever so slightly more responsive. Kinda glad I took the plunge after being too chicken to do it lol

Good for you!! Did mine also today using a credit card. Started at the top where the speaker is as it had the least resistance. Came off quite easily.

Are the front-panel logos on the Xperia T on the glass itself or on the shatterproof sheet? In other words, did the logos come off along with the sheet?

Silver sticker around camera lens.
A week in with my Xperia T and the sticker around camera lens has peeled away. Anyone else have same problem? Perhaps I'll need silver model paint in it's place.

same problem
had my xperia T for about 2 months now, i have been very careful with it, it hasnt been droped, or against anything sharp, the only thing it has had is the pulling in and out of my pocket every time i use it, as any phone should be designed to do, and the paint on all 4 corners is wearing off, mainly on the left side, i belive this to be the angle that it usually is in my jeans pocket causing it to scratch.
as a matter of intrest whats the cover on warenty for something like this? because the manufacture could say its not their fault,

Nexus 4 Bezel

My N4 finally came today and everything on it is perfect, no buzzing noise, no reboots, no yellow screen. But there is a very small indentation on the bezel. It's not a scratch but it looks like something from when it was manufactured. I'm just gonna keep it, it adds personality to it
Lol.

Hmm..got a picture?
Good decision. Unfortunately the bezel is vacuform plated plastic, and by its very nature is prone to blemishes (as are the buttons); my only real pet-peeve about the construction of this phone.
This thread is as useless as my nipples.
I'm having something similar I think. It's on the upper bezel....it's like a 1 inch horizontal line (when holding the phone in portrait) on the upper bezel. It's like it's underneath the glass, and it's like a 1-inch wavy line. Initially I thought it was residue from the factory plastic...but when I wiped, it would not go. It's some sort of molding-related thing to the plastic I'm sure.
It doesn't bother me as I know the manufacturing isn't perfect.
What bothers me is how small the phone is. Lol. I've been using the N7000 for so long I'm actually worried that this phone will slip out of my hands. Lol.
The size difference in screen is astounding....I'm having "some" reservations about keeping it.
It's also unfortunate that project butter is not all it's hyped up to be. I've seen it choke already on 3 occasions within the first 5 minutes. I guess I'll just remind myself that I've only paid $349 for this.

in general UI it makes a noticeable difference however lots of apps still do not default to GPU rendering and tend to stutter; you can force it in the developers options however its not a perfect solution.
I also have something I'm not quite sure about what it is. It seems to be a little piece of rubber/plastic/whatever sticking between bezel and glass. It's between front facing camera and earphone. At first it looks like a scratch and when you look closer it looks like the rubber that comes up if you pry up the iPhone's Display for repair. Are we talking about the same?

No.
Mine is something underneath the glass, in the middle location of the upper bezel, a wavy line about 1-inch in horizontal fashion when held in portrait mode.
It's below the speaker, to the left of the front facing camera. In the middle region. Some sort of molding-related issue. There is no scratch on the glass, etc. It's like when the bezel was stuck onto the glass, it was not perfect, etc.
It's a minor cosmetic issue though. Doesn't affect the functionality of the phone.

The bezel above the usb port on mine was lifted from the body enough to see into the phone. I just squeezed it together some. All good~

I've laughed at 3 of your posts now. Just got a chuckle in a previous thread. Thanks.
Seems like gorilla glass 2 isnt all that scratch resistant, or you have rocks in your pocket or something. I have never caused an unintentional scratch on any of my gorilla glass equipped phones. I will probably be getting a screen protector for this one though, and will use the official bumper whenever it comes into stock. Only like 35 more weeks until I get my phone!
2 Nexus 4's both have minor imperfections on the shinny chrome bezel, which is actually plastic I believe.
1- on the bottom of the left side a minor indentation, not scratch
2- on the bottom of the right side paint bubbling out, as if there was a spec of dust when the coat of paint was applied.
The second is more noticeable especially that it on the top part, while first is on bottom part.
But both magically disappear when the N4 is put in a case.
The manufacturing imperfection that's actually getting on my nerves just because I'm OCD (I truly am, not a self diagnosis ), is the little square glass covering the camera flash, it is ever so slightly rotated that it doesn't perfectly align with the black bezel around it ... it took me a mico second to spot it out of the box, and I cannot unsee it. It cannot be misaligned by more than a 10th of a millimeter, but somehow I can see it at arms length ... I'm just crazy!

Any glass isn't particularly scratch resistant. Lint and small particles will scratch any sort of glass, or just about anything with enough force. From personal experience, I've found that Gorilla Glass 2 is more fragile than Gorilla Glass 1 because it's thinner, despite Corning's presentation of it as being able to withstand the same amount of force.

Displayglas failure on the left and right edges

Hey community i own two Nexus 4 devices and both have the same problem... Two different bags and one SGS 3 were needed to recognize the problem specially on N4 devices. The left and right curved edges and some parts of the rest of the display are very sensitive of wear.
How I recognized this?
I wanted to clean my display.
If i breath on it, spots will appear who wont mist that much than the rest of the display.
This spots are not removeable and susceptible for dirt and fat fingers / fingerprints.
The SGS 3 , that has the same curved edges hasnt got this problem althrough it has the same kind of glas : gorilla glas 2
My first N4 had this problem on the left side to the middle of the display where i scroll the homescreens with my finger.. My second N4 has it symmetric on each side after 2 weeks. A displayprotector holds back the wear of the rest of the display.
I sent an email to google and reported about my problem. If you have recognized the same kind of s**t , please post a reply and where these spots appear. THANKS
Most likely the oleophobic coating is wearing off in those places. It happened on my Galaxy Nexus and its starting to happen on my Nexus 4. I have a bumper on so the edges are fine. Its wearing where it rubs against my pants pocket.
No problem here after 2 months +.
@ el daddy : sorry but this normaly happens to a 1 year old device. mine are one month and one week old. and that homescreenscrolling causes such spots.. in light use after one month.. like i said... SGS 3 same glas, same curved edges, havnt got that problem

I don't get why you are condescendingly apologizing to me. I was just telling you what was happening and that it's happened with my last two phones. Yeah it's annoying, but there is no time frame on when it should or shouldn't happen. It doesn't matter if it's brand new or 5 years old. Enough friction will cause wear.
AW: Displayglas failure on the left and right edges
and thats the point. one month light usage. and the finger causes enough friction to wear the screen like a streak of 1 cm * 4 cm from the edge to the middle? i cant imagine

same problem
i am getting this on about a quarter of the screen, where the coating has obviously worn off. it must be from going in and out of my jeans but ive only had it for 12 days. kind of a shame, its most noticeable in bright sunlight, with low screen brightness.
do you think putting a screen protector over top would even out the appearance of the coating and hide the area where its rubbed off?
AW: Displayglas failure on the left and right edges
yes a screenprotector helps to hide the worn spots. This afternoon i will post some pictures of the screen that will proof that this problem is caused by a manufacturing failure.
This are pictures of my second 1 and a half week old device. If i hadn't put a screenprotector on the display, the half of the screen would be rubbed of now.
In this picture you can see where the worn spots are.

On each side the simmilar wear with that not worn spot in the middle of the ledge.
Such a symmetry isnt caused by natural wear... It is caused by a differend degree of hardness all over the glass.

All your links are broken but it doesn't matter anyway. I'm honestly failing to understand the problem here? It's just the anti-finger print coating which is laughable at best at doing what it's supposed to do anyway. The only time you notice it wearing off is if you breathe on the phone.
You got any pics? the ones 2 posts above mine say they permission denied
I've got an old sgs that I never put a case or screen protector on and carried round in my jeans pocket for over 2 years without any wearing out of the screen coating. I've got a six month old razr maxx again with a perfect screen even tho it's been in my pocket without a case or screen protector. I've got a 6 month old n7 that I use all day long every day and which is constantly in and out of a neoprene sleeve that has a screen as good as the day I bought it, which hardly shows any finger prints and which I clean about once a month if that.
Contrast that to the 2 month old n4 that has half it's coating missing (although not in a pattern that could be caused solely by wear - it looks more like it was never applied correctly). I have to wipe the screen clean every time I use it and five minutes later it's filthy again, but only on one side - the other side is pristine. The dirty side is noticeably rougher too when swiping. In daylight the finger grease is enough to obscure the screen, so that I feel the need to clean it.
It's clearly either faulty or not fit for purpose. My gut feeling is that if applied correctly to a properly prepared screen, the coating should not wear off in normal use.
I really feel for you guys but there's no way to determine if x or y phones coating will wear off. I don't know if its the specific coating that Google uses or what but this has been known to happen on the nexus s and the galaxy nexus as well. As for your jeans... Jeans are actually very abrasive as they attract dirt and soot into the fibers and it acts almost like a strop on the glass repeatedly taking it in and out of your pocket.
I don't trust the glass on any of these devices and though the screen feels really nice on this phone... One of my RMA phones shipped with a big dot of a scratch or defect in the screen right from the factory. I never use any of these devices without a screen protector. I use bse as they mostly preserve the feel of the screen sans protector but if you want a less worn screen... On any phone I would suggest that be one of the first things you get for your phone.

Mine's exactly the same even down to the not worn spot in the middle of the edge. From how I use and carry my phone there is no way this is caused by normal wear and tear. My replacement arrived this morning so I will see how it compares tonight.

I think these little bugs are caused by the low price of the phone. reducing the costs of a phone causes bad quality...

[Q] Anyone notice scuffing on plastic "bezel"?

I bought a black Moto X and have been very very light with the phone, but I've already noticed "scuffing" on the plastic bezel around the display. I wonder if it is just my device or if anyone else has noticed it. I don't put my device screen down, and the plastic backing is absolutely fine.

I would have thought some reviewers would have mentioned it, haven't seen one say it yet. Curious indeed!
I have the same issue. Mine even had all kinds of loose plastic chips inside the packaging, like the kinds that fly around when trimming plastic in a factory. To top it off the vacuum sealed plastic on the box was very loose. To backup my claims, the first unit that they pulled out for me, wouldn't turn off almost like the power button was permanently pressed down. Weird. Had to exchange it. Looks like motorola might have some manufacturing issues to address.
Scuff Marks
I have this issue as well. After a couple times putting it in my pocket I had dull scuff marks on the bezel. Wonder if I can buff it out somehow? Come on Motorola!

Talk about scuffs and dents, buy a metal HTC phone and see what it looks like in 3 months, I had a HTC EVO 3D in black, the exterior is metal with the cheapest black paint job , not powder coated but painted and within 3 months the paint started to chip off exposing the bare metal .

[Q] Paint chipping! ?? Anyone else?

Had this thing a little while now. Resides in my front left pocket, screen facing me. Or in my Nokia Wireless car charger, or on my wood desk on the wireless charging samsung dock.
Was using the S-Pen, moved over to the right mid screen. Laid the pen on the screen, when I picked it back up noticed an inch or longer strip of the paint was gone on the lower right hand side.
Not happy. my devices are very wel kept and not dropped or dinged up. Haven't had this issue with any of my other devices other than the chrome on the S4 and one of my s5's. That was only after months of use though. Not NEW 1 week old...
Ive had mine a little over a month and it is still in 100% perfect shape.
I was reading on android central or another forum. There are many people with the issue. disappointed.

look into the usb port. that'll give you an idea of what's underneath the paint.
The paint on my black one just got chipped after trying to put a Spigen Ultra Hybrid. I have used the phone for more than a month in a case (Verus Thor), then changed the screen protector. Decided to use the Ultra Hybrid then about an inch of paint just chipped off at the upper left side.
There aren't any scratches (at least obvious enough as those I've seen in the forums) on the aluminum though. I'm back to using the Verus case cause it covers the chipped area (the other case is Clear). Quite disappointed to see that paint chip off just like that. Maybe they shouldn't have painted it at all cause it doesn't look so bad without paint.
Now I just want the rest of the paint to chip off.
nvm

Zaggs tempered glass revision 2 has been on the money. I've placed this thing on twice. Once when I got it and, the second time, I removed it from my old unit after a screen burn-in replacement, and place it onto my new unit. No air bubbles and the glass feels high quality, comparable to Whitestone sans the complex installation. It sits on the screen only slightly curving to the edge, and it does sit flush without interfering with the edge tab if I choose to use it. It is quite expensive ($50) but imho, it's quite worth it after successful installation. Highly recommend it!

It sits on the screen only slightly curving to the edge, and it does sit flush without interfering with the edge tab if I choose to use it. It is quite expensive ($50) but imho, it's quite worth it after successful installation. Highly recommend it!

While I agree with you that it goes on nicely you didn't mention that since it doesn't cover as much screen as other protectors and also has black side bars you get a weird effect where there's screen, black bar, rest of the screen which is quite annoying.

yes there are black borders around SP which the top and bottom part aligns with the phone borders, so no issues there. Depending on an individual's taste, the side borders may be of concern. However, I made no mention of any weird effects as a result from the blk borders and / or the edges not being fully covered because I haven't experienced any negative effects thru general use of the phone. I must also mention, that in some apps, i.e. flipboard the first letters of words that display close to the edge of the screen may be partially blocked by the SP borders. But for me that's not a problem, as i don't experience this issue with most of the apps I use on a daily basis.

No I agree with you, I just thought people should know in case they're looking to purchase it. Like you said, 50 dollars is a lot for a SP especially if you didn't know the bars did that and it bothered you. I'll be keeping mine on until something better comes along, if ever.

Agreed!
They at least have an all clear one here with no black bars if you go to the select page, still doesn't look like it goes all the way to the sides https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32852...00_0109&spm=a2g0n.search-amp.list.32852741886

i have tried these, good product in terms of clarity and touch sensitivity. the issue i had was that the vertical edges would easily crack with a bit of pressure as they dont seat on the screen as well as they should.
my current solution for using these is to remove the adhesive backing and reapply with loca adhesiveand cure with uv light.

Tested these a month ago. Cracked two working out bubbles. Glass quality is very bad. One cracked on the right side. The other on the bottom using a fingernail to work out a bubble. No chance that this is good 9h tempered glass. Opened a dispute and got both refunded. My opinion, not recommended.
Not recommended too, to narrow, covering edges with black bars completely.

Not recommended too, same bad glass like the one posted and cutting display on the bottom

ok so i purchased one and it arrived yesterday
while applying it i got some dust stuck under the protector, tried to take it out but it wouldnt move
applied it anyway and its pretty good except for the air bubbles near the curved sides of the screen (and the dust particles)
the protector is really fragile too, it chipped and cracked a corner while working out the bubbles - others have complained that theirs cracked for no reason
other than that it actually feels amazing and is compatible with the ringke fusion
ive contacted support, hopefully theyll send me out a new one
I wonder why they disabled comments in their video?
What's the best between this one and Dome Glas ?
I don't like the cut around speaker - face camera ...
A real full cover for front face is the most beautiful but may be not very good for quality of face camera ???
