Very slow wifi - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently my wifi has been extremely slow, I ran a speed test and my download speed is 3Mbps and my upload speed is 12Mbps(which is normal). Then I ran a speedtest on my N7 and I got a download speed of 52Mbps and upload speed of 13Mbps. This seemed weird to me. YouTube videos barely even play, they buffer like every 10 seconds. I have a comcast 2in1 modem/router but I have not had problems with it before.(all my other devices have fast speeds) Also I'm running Maximus HD 21.0 but it was also slow when I had ARHD. Any ideas?

I second that. I've used the speedtest.net website on PCs for years and the app works great too.

Not to hijack the thread, but what is everyone's average up/down speeds on Edge and 3G?

On 3g, average of 4mbps download and 2.5mbps upload. Never test edge because I never feel the need to switch bands.
On wifi, I go between 18 and 23mbps down and 15 to 18mbps up.
I'll throw another one in here. FCC test from the market. It's the one I use.
A word of caution
Reg: Data Usage
App: Speed Test
Avg data usage per test: ~6MB
Audience: For people with "limited" data on.
I was puzzled to see I had close to 150 MB data consumed last noon. I was sure I wasn't downloading anything at that and all I was doing was trying out modems. Today morning I realized I was using the SpeedTest app to test the modem at that time. So I made a couple of tests using the app, using the 3G watchdog app to keep tab on data. It kinda shocked me to notice that this app was using ~6MB per test! That explains my data usage y'day. I had done more than 20 tests, to say the least, in less than an hour y'day. And then many more tests during the day and even late into night.
So now u r all warned if u r on limited plan. As for me, I am on the 2GB plan, and well, these speed tests cost me close to 300MB in just one day, y'day.

Hey how did you get up to 18 mbps? The scale only goes up to 10... and I only get about 2mbps.....

The scale changes with respect to the speed. Mine went up to 15+mbps at school.

Can anyone tell me why mine is really slow? Wifi and 3g both are really bad compared to what y'all have..
Sent from my phone
It's case by case. The speed is related to your phone +ROM+ modem + environment. That's one of the reasons why there are so many (ROM, modem, kernel) combinations out there. We all look forward to the release of AT&T's Froyo source such that developers can come up with an universal solution for all.

Using the speedtest.net app, the max speed that can be reached (stable) is around 10mbps, but it flickers up to around 13mbps (unstable). And using the FCC app, it runs the exact same test as speedtest, but it has a a higher max speed and it allows me to get an accurate result.
FCC test seems to provide more stable results on my Captivate.
Speedtest.net halts while testing the upload speed under several different ROM/modem/kernel combinations.
So I've been using Fcc test.. should you set the server to the nearest location? Is that the best?
Sent from my phone
Yea, gives you better results since you're transferring data from point A to point B and back, instead of going from point A to point J and back.

wifi/3g speeds after 2.3 update

My 3G is a good bit faster now. On 2.2 the fastest speednet test I completed was around 12-13 mbits/second on 4G LTE. With the 2.3 update, I was able to get a 18 mbits recording, no problem.
I also have much faster wifi speeds now. On 2.2 my wifi was actually slower than 4G. It pulled around 10 mbits/second. After the 2.3 update, it downloads at 24 mbits/second over wifi.
Has anyone else experienced similar changes in networking performance?
Same here, 4g used to be 8-11 down now its consistently over 20. Upload used to be about 4 now its between 8-10!

[Q] WIFI 802.11ac connection speed

Hello,
can anyone tell me what is the connection speed using 802.11ac ?
i know that on GN with wifi n you cannot exceed 65mbs and i hope HTC doesn't limit the ac to a speed lower than 900mbs.
Thank you!
Damn, you're talking about 900mbps? I've got a connection of only 21 mbps
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using Tapatalk 2
802.11ac is only as fast as your router and the speeds you get from your provider, and as far as I know, no provider offers 900mbps connections. I have xfinity 105 mbps package and the wifi on my iphone 5 averages 50 mbps

this is not entirely true.
google fiber has 1Gb internet solution but this is not what I'm trying to find out.
I want to know the connection speed showed in settings under wifi when you are connected to a 802.11ac router.

yes, i can use all the bandwidth from a 802.11ac and the simplest example is file sharing.
also you are not limited to 1 process so you can simultaneously do file sharing, video streaming, download, upload etc.
I am finding that the HTC One refuses to connect to my Asus RT-AC66U router. Unfortunately the AC standard being draft, I suspect its a compatibility issue. It seems to go into authentication, delay, then try again over and over.
In the end I had to connect on my 2.4GHz output instead for now.

you might be limited due to write speed on phone's memory card.
can you transfer trough ftp from your pc to the phone a large file and monitor the transfer speed?

My Note 3 youtube app connection speeds are better than my other droids & PC; reason?

My Note 3 youtube app connection speeds are better than my other droids & PC; reason?
I have NEVER been able to stream HQ content from youtube consistently without running into constant buffering. Last time I checked even all computers I used buffer so bad its a waste of time to even try; so I placed the issue solely on YouTube shaping traffic. When i got my Note 3 I had noticed how high quality the youTube vids looked and I wa slike 'oh crap, I need to turn off the HD cause this is gonna just be 24/7 buffering', then I thought 'give it a second because you have already been watching a few vids with no buffering'. Needless to say I have not turn off the HD and I have not had any buffering issues.
My question is: what happened? Did YouTube magically upgrade their servers since I bought my Note 3 the other week/since I tried to use YouTube HD last? Is my Note three somehow better at managing internet traffic and has a better wifi? Is Google/youtube starting to give priority to android devices? Whats going on that I can now get streaming HD with no interruptions from youtube?
Thanks for the help!
If your using your data on your note 3 when you go on YouTube that's probably why. The speed on these phones is amazingly fast. I know cause I have issues on my computer watching YouTube videos. I have fios at home 50mb download and 50mb upload and I still get rebuffering issues. who would have ever thought my phone's data was going to be faster than my home isp.

Nope. Thanks though. Now I wonder if it could be the modem I had them repalce that didnt seem to have any issues? That or Youtube upgraded cause I can get it on all devices now. Hell im streaming 2 1080p signals from youtube at a time. thats a huge improvement over one not doing it without buffering.
Sorry to post here on this when its not android related.

Youtube constant buffering over LTE

this goes for anyone who uses the youtube app but mainly for people using it on tmobiles network.
as of late any video in 720p or above buffers every 3 to 4 seconds.
if you go into youtube then go to settings--> General--> then enable stats for nerds. find any video that displays in 1080p and while in the video bring up the regular youtube menu for where u can select the quality u will see the stats icon...while playing the video in youtube i am getting a max of 175KiB/s over LTE... but when i run various speed tests i am getting 30Mbps average.
can anyone else with youtube recreate this issue? ive tested on three different tmobile phones all on different accounts and im trying to see if tmobile is throttling or if anyone else who doesnt have tmobile can see if its a youtube issue.

But even with your read ahead you are still only managing 170Kib.... That's dirt slow. Only reason our read a heads are different is because I took that screen shot right before a buffer. We seem to be having the same issue

well if is a solid consistent slow speed then it could just be T-mo throttling your video streaming. I get similar issues on AT&T, which people on u-verse complain about as well so it must be part of att's backhaul. You can try this app it works for me when ATT gets slow running through this VPN fixes it for whatever reason and its 100% free with no email signups or anything.

There's likely nothing you say that'll change anything regardless of if it's actually a network limitation or them throttling you. If it was throttling then it's probably hidden somewhere in the service agreement but since people in other area's are saying their's is fine then there's probably a bad hop somewhere in the connection between you and youtube.
Here in Germany there are also supsicions that Telekom/T-Mobile are sometimes blocking Youtube....don't know why and don't know how, but I have read it and had the problem myself some time as well.

I'm also in Brooklyn too, and the thing is this: we do get really good speeds out here, but the second you step in Manhattan, the speed drops tremendously. I'm averaging 5mb in Manhattan where I work. Meanwhile in Brooklyn, I'm averaging about 25-35mb. It's crazy how I get throttled in different areas.
