this goes for anyone who uses the youtube app but mainly for people using it on tmobiles network.
as of late any video in 720p or above buffers every 3 to 4 seconds.
if you go into youtube then go to settings--> General--> then enable stats for nerds. find any video that displays in 1080p and while in the video bring up the regular youtube menu for where u can select the quality u will see the stats icon...while playing the video in youtube i am getting a max of 175KiB/s over LTE... but when i run various speed tests i am getting 30Mbps average.
can anyone else with youtube recreate this issue? ive tested on three different tmobile phones all on different accounts and im trying to see if tmobile is throttling or if anyone else who doesnt have tmobile can see if its a youtube issue.

1. im with tmobile(in brooklyn), and that issue does not EVER happen here.
2. to me it sounds like you are having issues with your lte speeds. for me, my lte speeds are usually between 30mbps download and 60mbps download. nothing ever buffers over here, especially not youtube, and not in 2K HD either.
3. btw, what ia your download speed at the moment?

But even with your read ahead you are still only managing 170Kib.... That's dirt slow. Only reason our read a heads are different is because I took that screen shot right before a buffer. We seem to be having the same issue

well if is a solid consistent slow speed then it could just be T-mo throttling your video streaming. I get similar issues on AT&T, which people on u-verse complain about as well so it must be part of att's backhaul. You can try this app it works for me when ATT gets slow running through this VPN fixes it for whatever reason and its 100% free with no email signups or anything.

There's likely nothing you say that'll change anything regardless of if it's actually a network limitation or them throttling you. If it was throttling then it's probably hidden somewhere in the service agreement but since people in other area's are saying their's is fine then there's probably a bad hop somewhere in the connection between you and youtube.
Here in Germany there are also supsicions that Telekom/T-Mobile are sometimes blocking Youtube....don't know why and don't know how, but I have read it and had the problem myself some time as well.

I'm also in Brooklyn too, and the thing is this: we do get really good speeds out here, but the second you step in Manhattan, the speed drops tremendously. I'm averaging 5mb in Manhattan where I work. Meanwhile in Brooklyn, I'm averaging about 25-35mb. It's crazy how I get throttled in different areas.

sorry to burst all of your bubbles, the stage fright "hack" changes the way android decodes h264 audio. When the phone is set to false, it takes twice as long to decode the audio if not more. You will actually see quadrant hang on that step.
With it set to true, it decodes faster, but so you know; PANDORA, SIRIUS, and other streaming apps will not function correctly when set to true. Go ahead and try it.
So it is a placebo effect, the score changes based off one decoding process. The higher scores have nothing to do with any other system performance. I think its a flaw in the way quadrant ranks processes for a score....
Nick, using root explorer go to /system and find build.prop copy it to your sd card and use word pad on your computer to change all 4 lines about stage fright from false to true. Save it, then over write the one in /system with the modified file. Done.

I figured it out with astro but I'm on 2.2 not rooted so I'm assuming I can't do this. Plus I don't want to mess up my audio. Is there a way I can use universal androot to root my 2.2 and then use setcpu?

Removed mine, hope you're happy. . Too many issues with video playbacks
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Just as bad4u said it does cause problems. I scored in the 2100s consistently by changing stagefright=true. However, none of the videos on my phone would play correctly. Whether it was video taken from the camera or videos that I had put on the sdcard. I ended up reverting back to stagefright=false which fixed the issue.
IS there any real-world performance gain from applying the TRUE value?
if there is performance gain, it would be possible to develop a Stagefright Toggle widget that changes it from false to true, so you can switch whnever you want to play audio/video or when you dont
Didn't have any video playback issues streaming or off sdcard.

On 3g, average of 4mbps download and 2.5mbps upload. Never test edge because I never feel the need to switch bands.
On wifi, I go between 18 and 23mbps down and 15 to 18mbps up.
I'll throw another one in here. FCC test from the market. It's the one I use.
A word of caution
Reg: Data Usage
App: Speed Test
Avg data usage per test: ~6MB
Audience: For people with "limited" data on.
I was puzzled to see I had close to 150 MB data consumed last noon. I was sure I wasn't downloading anything at that and all I was doing was trying out modems. Today morning I realized I was using the SpeedTest app to test the modem at that time. So I made a couple of tests using the app, using the 3G watchdog app to keep tab on data. It kinda shocked me to notice that this app was using ~6MB per test! That explains my data usage y'day. I had done more than 20 tests, to say the least, in less than an hour y'day. And then many more tests during the day and even late into night.
So now u r all warned if u r on limited plan. As for me, I am on the 2GB plan, and well, these speed tests cost me close to 300MB in just one day, y'day.

It's case by case. The speed is related to your phone +ROM+ modem + environment. That's one of the reasons why there are so many (ROM, modem, kernel) combinations out there. We all look forward to the release of AT&T's Froyo source such that developers can come up with an universal solution for all.

Using the speedtest.net app, the max speed that can be reached (stable) is around 10mbps, but it flickers up to around 13mbps (unstable). And using the FCC app, it runs the exact same test as speedtest, but it has a a higher max speed and it allows me to get an accurate result.
FCC test seems to provide more stable results on my Captivate.
Speedtest.net halts while testing the upload speed under several different ROM/modem/kernel combinations.
So I've been using Fcc test.. should you set the server to the nearest location? Is that the best?
Sent from my phone
Yea, gives you better results since you're transferring data from point A to point B and back, instead of going from point A to point J and back.
Has anyone ever managed to push the Exynos Dual processor and Mali 400 in the Note to its limits with any application or game other than a benchmarking app? Have you seen the chipset struggling anywhere so as to make us consider going to something with the Exynos Quad?

I guess you read my question wrong. I dont have any performance issues whatsoever. What I meant to ask was if anyone has managed to truly push the Dual core Exynos to its limits with any application or game excluding benchmarking tools. i.e, is there any application or game out there at present that can make our year old hardware struggle?
I asked this because I have a Galaxy S3 and a Galaxy Note and I prefer the Galaxy Note due to its screen size compared to the S3 and I dont have any present intentions to get the Note 2 as I've already put money on the S3 this year. Moreover my Note is just 3months old which makes it pointless for me to upgrade so soon.
I was planning to give one of these phones to my dad who is not a "power user". He would just use the phone for calls, texts, VOIP and browsing. So it doesnt matter to him whichever phone it is.
The only disappointment for me with the galaxy Note is the "clipping" which seems to appear in videos and shadows every now and then. Otherwise its perfect.
yep I understood wrong, I havent found such a game
supposedly, a benchmarktool should do that, but even then if I dont set min max on highest frequency it doesnt stay that way.

Load some Hi graphic intensive games bud... NOVA 3, Batman (the dark night rises) and etc.... while playing, run some VOIP apps, emails and etc... While running those simultaneously, make a graphic intensive presentation and load it on your phone (thru Polaris).
Then switch back from the games your playing, to the apps you've open in the background...
See if you will be getting this after.
1. Extreme lags.
2. Force Close on some open apps.
These are some of the things I can think of in checking for Performance bottlenecks... If your phone passes this with flying colors... then GOOD. If not, so there's your answer on the Dual-Core chipsets limitation
Apply livewallpaper, & fill all your homescreen with online widgets then install facebook.. i dunno i saw my phone before clocking at 800mhz to 1400mhz non-stop with that setup & hell its hot whenever i switch wifi on lol

Dude I know what you mean. Right now I think there is nothing out there to fully use the duke core to it's fullest potential. Only the ram is the main issue for me on my note. I just traded my s3 for a TMobile note. Dumb? Maybe but I like the bigger screen and stylus. I just wish it had more ram. The s3 over all is alot smoother in everything. I have noticed that backgrounds of games tends to scroll in a choppy fashion.
For example, try
Garfield's Defense: Attack of the Food Invaders
And just run to the right and watch the background - you'll see it doesn't scroll smoothly at all.
Same thing happens for most HD games that have scrolling backgrounds - broken sword, seven stars 3d, etc.
gameplay itself seems mostly fine, but the choppy backgrounds are really distracting.
Every now and then the Note tends to start lagging, especially when syncing.
Try syncing facebook contacts via haxsync and the note will be grinding while that's going on.

Hi all so let me start by saying ive always enjoyed this site and its users and help. unfortunately what brings me here is that Im having issues with some fluidity of this device based on what ive seen from other videos regarding games and their benchmarks. Ok so heres a few examples of titles im speaking of. Dead Trigger 1&2, Modern Combat 4, all of the Grand Theft Auto games. Even DraStic DS Emulator which ive seen running perfectly on a user posted Note 3. My wifes iPhone 5c runs these games literally perfect, my Note 3 struggles here and there. So that led me to running almost every benchmark i could think of and to my concern again all of my scores are coming up a hair shorter than other users. And gameplay isnt just quite as smooth as other user videos. I almost have no other issues with the device and im constantly taking care of its memory and cache. Even factory rest a few times. Its nothing more than normal Android hiccup that ive been used to. But with Project Butter and these other videos I just need to know if theres an issue with my device or did I get screwed buying the Note 3. Has anyone else noticed this? Either via gaming or web scrolling or the notorious Youtube Streaming smoothness issue. Please any help is greatly appreciated. Ive even taken the liberty of posting every screen cap of benchmarks that i took. You dont have to look at all the photos but im thorough so i gave you all of them.
I don't know what is wrong with your device but something doesn't seem right. You Antutu seems way low compared to mine and even the stock phone. Do you have any power saving apps running or something?

See thats what I dont understand its a factory reset. Heres my other concern with your screenie, yours is even higher than alot of scores Ive seen. So I cant quite get a figure on what the norm is for this device. Especially since there are so many versions with two different chipsets too boot. What I dont get is if these scores are the norm then why. Since as much as I hate iOS i have to give it credit where its due: ITS ABSOLUTELY SMOOTHER THAN A DEVICE WITH MORE PHYSICAL RAW POWER? My gripes arent even major the hiccups are only every now and then but for the most part I have a hard time seeing any other YouTube Note 3's that display the behavior. And its not even that its bad or doesnt work, i just got concerned with the hiccups.
I'm running a custom ROM. But yours is even lower than the stock mark?? Weird

I thought about trying the same idea of flashing it and Ive done many other devices. Buts thats not why I bought the device, I dont wanna brick it or just flat out tamper with it, and it seems hit or miss from person to person or at least what Ive seen. Reviews say it hiccups but videos Ive watched on youtube dont really do it or i cant quite notice it over the occasoinal stutter that youtube itself presents lol. Any ideas? Even the Exynos Bench's are alost identical to our SnapDragons save for one or two tests. i dont get it im confused lol.

No power save. And theres no AT&T Stock Binary yet. Im not messing with that OneClick lol. Any other ideas?
Id be just as satisfied if everyone can say their device runs all these games with out one single hiccup. Ever. Lol. I know Android games arent as optimized as ios but Im just trying to understand why or how to fix it or if some poeple have also experinced it. And like i said youtube stutters on its own on my laptop and Note 3 so its been hard to use that as a reference.Ive been able to use it to compare my ps3 games framerates but the quality of vidoes out there are crap since most are being recorded unprofeesionally. The other half is just as a i said hard to tell from youtube.

*bump* I hate doing it, just looking for more input. Thanks.
I know you said you dont have "power save" on...but this sounds stuiped but I had this problem before...Even though your button says power save is off Have you clicked to the left of the button and bring this menu up and make sure its not on Auto on is enabled?
yeh auto save was enabled on mine.cool I took it off.Didn't even know that menu existed.lol
Ok so this was after turning every option I could think of. My question still remains that I don't understand why others are still getting higher results. Also these numbers have had no effect on gaming it still hiccups in most hardware intensive applications just slightly more than an iPhone 5c I just don't get it.

Well I've been keeping it eye on it more and i've gotten as high as 33,000 or whatever it was in that screenie but it's not consistent it'll drop back down in the 27'000 area. Plus like I said my main concern is I can't get this phone to play games as well as my wife's iPhone does. I mean this is a quad core right. Last I checked no iPhone should beat this on pen and paper right? And it's not unplayable and most wouldn't care but I just wanted to know if this hiccup here and there is acceptable as normal?

I contacted AT&T and they're sending me a replacement. Well see what happens then. But you guys never see a hiccup in your gaming. Never the slightest framerate dip? And i should clarify that when im comparing it to the iPhone the framerates there stay consistent. My device plays great but here and there it hiccups. That's actually what I'm really referring to. And if so how is that possible comparing it to s device of lesser power? I mean I don't make this stuff up I keep noticing that almost every game I play runs just that much better on my wife's iPhone 5c than a Note 3...
My Note 3 youtube app connection speeds are better than my other droids & PC; reason?
I have NEVER been able to stream HQ content from youtube consistently without running into constant buffering. Last time I checked even all computers I used buffer so bad its a waste of time to even try; so I placed the issue solely on YouTube shaping traffic. When i got my Note 3 I had noticed how high quality the youTube vids looked and I wa slike 'oh crap, I need to turn off the HD cause this is gonna just be 24/7 buffering', then I thought 'give it a second because you have already been watching a few vids with no buffering'. Needless to say I have not turn off the HD and I have not had any buffering issues.
My question is: what happened? Did YouTube magically upgrade their servers since I bought my Note 3 the other week/since I tried to use YouTube HD last? Is my Note three somehow better at managing internet traffic and has a better wifi? Is Google/youtube starting to give priority to android devices? Whats going on that I can now get streaming HD with no interruptions from youtube?
Thanks for the help!
If your using your data on your note 3 when you go on YouTube that's probably why. The speed on these phones is amazingly fast. I know cause I have issues on my computer watching YouTube videos. I have fios at home 50mb download and 50mb upload and I still get rebuffering issues. who would have ever thought my phone's data was going to be faster than my home isp.

Nope. Thanks though. Now I wonder if it could be the modem I had them repalce that didnt seem to have any issues? That or Youtube upgraded cause I can get it on all devices now. Hell im streaming 2 1080p signals from youtube at a time. thats a huge improvement over one not doing it without buffering.
Sorry to post here on this when its not android related.
