If phone doesn't boot... - Nexus 5 General

Well, I was browsing around the market and my n5 just abruptly shut itself off. It hasn't been able to turn back on since. I've tried every key/charge/magic trick in the book so its DEAD!
Happy to jump in the RMA line at this point but was wondering if any others can confirm DEAD devices. The RMA thread is kinda full of nitpick issues but a dead device is a dead device.
This was the only discussion chain I could find on the issue but maybe someone from google will comment on dead devices. lol
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/nexus/lI6A3fA8bvw/d3eQlqEqabEJ
EDIT:
so it appears holding down both volume buttons + power while it's plugged in to the charger (not USB to PC) will temporarily boot the phone. You can then do a restore to stock and issue gets fixed. :good:

Damn. That blows.

Ya I got an RMA setup but I've been tryin to turn it on ever since. I managed to figure out it will turn on ONLY when it's plugged in and holding down BOTH volume buttons and power. It will bring up the bootloader and from there I can go into recovery, START (os) but reboot options freeze it again. It's really weird, it won't start by doing the same procedure without the power plugged in. It's like it doesn't want to boot on its own cuz it thinks it's dead? Funny thing is the battery says 100%+ in TWRP.
Since I was able to get it booted tethered to the power I'm going to have it drain the battery to dead and see if it resets itself or something. Maybe a bad idea but I guess I don't care at this point it's already RMAd and I don't know what else to try. lol

Do you have a backup you can attempt to restore?

Have you tried to adb into it?

Delete damn it

I would never install twrp.

There is a stock rom in here somewhere. Flash it boot loader and see what happens.

Ya I restored backed up stock but its same boot issue. Factory reset = same issue. I will try full restore from stock to see if that does anything.

Why wouldn't you? In situations like this, it is extremely helpful. Do you expect him to install CWM or something? From my understanding, at least when I first got my phone and flash a custom recovery, CWM wasn't booting. If you are here to try and press your opinion on which custom recovery you prefer, go to their official thread.

Yep all good now. No explanation to why this happened but recreating the fs and flashing stock seems to have resolved the issue.

I done messed up

I JUST got my nexus 7, i installed LCD Dencity Modder, i cant boot and im totally new to android. I had just rooted it. HELP!!!
Take a deep breath. Breath IN and out
use the nexus root kit in the dev forum to push the original firmware back to your device.. The awesome Developer has included all instructions on his thread.. Then learn a bit more about ANDROID. PLEASE ..
GOOD LUCK.. if this were not a nexus device you could have just thrown 250.oo away .. :highfive::good:
also there is a reset somehow. could be hold both vol up vol down and then push and hold power.. might take you into nv flash or stock recovery . not read much on this device as far as that. But will when its in my hand.

Thank You!!! im not normally this ignorant, but my total andriod usage probably ads up to <30mins.
I do know android, and I somehow got stuck at the Google screen. Tried to boot into recovery from ROM manager and now I just freeze at the Google screen. Cant get into recovery, only fast boot. Not at my computer right now but can I flash recovery from the fastboot menu? I tried resetting by using all three buttons but it just sticks at the Google screen

im not sure holding those buttons in that config is correct was just a guess. You should yes be able to push new recovery with fast boot. as this is how its useally done.. AS I Posted in the above i looked at the root tool kit . it looks as thou it has a auto push to restore the device . I ASSUMED it was nv flash or fast boot. Since i do not have the device i cant say for sure.
there is also some kind of small hole on the left side . This could also be a reset. again TRY AT YOUR OWN Risk. im only guessing on experience with other android devices .
I should stop replying to i need help threads until i know more of this device as its only guessing .
Good luck . let us know what you learn from getting you back to normal boot. will help avoid this stuff in future.

I have been able to use that combo for a hard reset on the device last night, but it doesn't seem to help with the loop I'm stuck in. I know that there is cwm recovery on here since I did a nandroid after I rooted. I did see the hole on the side but I had assumed it was a mic hole. Kinda afraid to stick anything in there I just got back to my parents from my sisters graduation party so I may try to give reflashing recovery a shot before I leave here. I'll post results when I hopefully have progress

OOOPS On the hole thing. your prob right .
As far as the combo doing hard reset. if its not fixing the boot looP its a soft reset . hard reset would restore your device settings .

There are actually two holes on the device; one on the top near the left corner, and another on the left side above the 4 pin dock connectors. Pretty sure these are dual mics for noise canceling, for the Google Now. I may be wrong, but still don't recommend sticking a paperclip in there.
Ok. On the WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit that I used last night to unlock and root there is an option to unroot and relock bootloader. This is normally done over adb, which I did not have access to, but if you select the "My device won't boot" option, it will do it over fast boot. Now that my device actually booted up correctly, I am unlocking and re-rooting. All is good, despite now having to set everything up all over again.
On a side note, I highly recommend WugFresh's Root Toolkit. I used it for my Galaxy Nexus before when it was just a command line script that would do all of the work for you, now it is built with a complete GUI that makes things even easier.

reset on boot

i did something very stupid.
i was gonna go back to factory settings.
to do that, i boot into custom recovery ( i forget the name but it has a purple background )
i was gonna click on wipe factory settings but accidently click on wipe to install new custom rom. and i resetarted my phone and now it wont boot.
when i put it on charge, it starts booting without i press the power button and it resets itself after sony logo comes up, and it is doing that until i unplug the charge cable.
when i plug it on computer, nothing happens even i push the power button..,
i cant enter fastboot
i cant enter custom recovery
i simply cant do anything..
anybody has any idea about waht to do ?
thx
anyone?

Wow. You probably could have fixed it in about 5 minutes by flashing a stock rom with Flashtool.
Oh well. Make sure you buy a different device to replace it. This one is obviously too much trouble for you.

I take it you did a full wipe when flashing?
In any case, you probably did yourself a favour.
If you're the type of person to smash an expensive piece of electronics beyond repair when you're having problems with it, perhaps you shouldn't be flashing mods to your devices. Use this knowledge in future.

There was really no need. If people read the forum they'd see its almost impossible to kill your phone with any option in recovery.
Accidently wiping system is like swapping out the hard drive in your PC. Of course it won't boot, but with the right software and 5 minutes you can get it installed again.
All you needed to do was get it into flashmode (nothing shows on screen) by holding volume down and plugging in usb, then flash anything you want using flash tool.

[Q] Stuck in Bootloop after fixing permissions in TWRP

Hey All,
Finally got my nexus 6 and I'm pumped to have a developer phone again. Haven't done anything since I got rid of my galaxy nexus a year or so ago, so I'm a bit rusty. Sorry if this has been posted before, I searched but couldn't find anything related to this. Long story short, I had my phone unlocked and rooted and have TWRP installed fine. I just went in and cleared the cache, dalvik cache, and fixed permissions... and now I'm stuck in a bootloop. After researching I'm pretty sure it was the fixed permissions that messed it up, I didn't know that it didn't work on lollipop at the time. I've come to the conclusion I need to reflash the stock images and start from scratch. The only problem is I'm currently stuck at work for another 4 hours and can't use adb at all on this computer. So I'm wondering if anyone knew of another way to fix from just the phone. Thanks in advanced guys!

you can try flashing any rom, since you have twrp installed, or you can try wiping data(factory reset).

Unfortunately, I do not have any ROMs saved on my phone yet. I just got it last night with only maybe an hour or two of playing time. I also tried factory reset through TWRP and am still experiencing the bootloop. Would formatting data help? I feel like it would, but like I said, I'm rusty.

Yah I realized fixing permissions messes it up. And also if u wipe internal storage the phone looses the system ui and the back home menu buttons as well
well thats good to know. Will it still do that if I'm not encrypted?

Probably too late to do, but USB-OTG cable and a jump drive. I have downloaded stuff on work PC, copied to jump drive and flashed it on phone with TWRP from the jump drive.
I can personally confirm the permission fix in TWRP recovery breaks the stock L5.0.0 and 5.0.1 and I assume probably most ROMs? There seems to be several threads about this.

[Q] Constantly reboots to blank/black desktop

My friend recently gave me her old HTC One, and I've been trying to fix it, but I can't quite figure it out.
She said it started bootlooping randomly after she plugged it in to charge. When I first received it I plugged it in and mashed the power button until it turned on. Booted up just fine. But now it's in a stupid bootloop that takes me to a blank desktop with no dock or wallpaper, and then reboots after a few minutes.
Can a battery issue cause this? A complete factory reset from recovery is not an option because I'm trying to save her photos. I don't know how I can get 11gb worth of them off when it's not booting properly.. Any ideas for fixing this or getting the photos off?
Have you tried to wipe data factory reset from recovery ?
That doesn't erase photos
Oh really? I thought it did. This is a stock recovery btw. No root or anything. And it's on 4.1.

If you're rooted, factory reset will not work. You will need the KDZ file to wipe your phone, which is currently in the works.
If you actually got it to boot, then you're fine. That "activating" screen sometimes takes several minutes. Just be patient.

Thank you for helping. I don't actually make it to an activating screen. I just get one step past wifi (if I keep wifi on it gets caught in updating system. And I can hear when I get a text message, although I can't check it. But that makes sense if I can't factory reset a rooted phone....

I think I may be seeing something related to what you're seeing (though I'm not starting over from a Factory Reset). Ever since taking the root flash, my wifi isn't connecting to my home router anymore.
I was just about ready to do a Factory Reset to see if that fixed it, but now it doesn't look like that'll help.

During the initial setup after factory reset, when you get to the wifi setup screen can you just skip over the wifi setup? Is it possible your wifi isn't working (mine isn't either) and as long as you keep attempting to connect you'll never get past that step in the initial setup process?
i need zv4 rooted system file, i'll root the phone using the zv4 file and will do OTA , thn will get the update.zip for ZV5.
if any one have zv4 rooted system file pl share.
