Here comes THAT thread: Jelly Bean?

Alright, everyone.
My Atrix 2 just died on me. Well, didn't die, the screen cracked open, long story.
Basically, I need a new phone.
However, because the Atrix 2 STILL hasn't gotten ICS, I swore to never return to Motorola. Yeah, it's not 100% their fault that it's taking them so long, but seriously? It's become really annoying.
So I promised to ONLY buy Android products that have the word "Nexus" in their title, phones that get DIRECT updates from Google without wait and without alterations.
Problem is, I was gonna hold out on the Galaxy Nexus since I feel like a new one must be on the horizon.
Then I heard of the Atrix HD, which, like the other Atrixes (Atrice? Atrici?) has a very amazing starting price of $100.
And now Motorola mobile is owned by Google, right?
So, the TL;DR version of it is this:
Is this phone likely to see timely and consistent updates from Google? I know it just came out, but you guys are really great at what you do, so I'm wondering what your predictions are. Is this phone likely to see Jelly Bean at all in the near future?
I'd like to buy a phone that is future proof to AT LEAST Jelly Bean.

The updates still come from Motorola. The acquisition doesn't mean anything to the updates. But this is probably one of Motorola's flagship phones now, so it'll have to get at least Jelly bean.

according to what i've read, MB models are midrange, XT models are flagship. Regardless of this being the most powerful at the moment, it's mid range. There will be a Droid RAZR HD that will surpass this quickly with an XT model number.

That can't be right. When the Atrix 4G launched it was the top of the line Motorola phone, the first dual core phone and won best of CES 2011. Anyway I'd have to agree with the previous poster it will eventually receive JB.

Well the only company that has conformed jellybean on there top of the line smartphones is htc!! And they did that yesterday only!! So i will give motorola few more days before hearing about jelly bean upgrade!! And we should understand only phone that has jelly bean is galaxy nexus!! But since motorola mobile is part of google now so we can expect faster upgrade cycle!! And mostly vanilla experience to!!

Agreed, coming from a RAZR (yesterday) I'm well aware of Moto's lag time in Android updates. I have to say, though, they did an awesome job with ICS... Took forever, but it's awesome!

I'm pretty happy with ICS, so I'm OK waiting a little while for JB. Motorola will probably release it in 6 months, then AT&T will delay it for 6-9 more...not that it's really OK, I wish updates were faster. They need to cut out the carrier-specific modifications!

My wife just today got the new Motorola Atrix HD. So far I think it is a very nice phone and hope she gets great service from it. I to hope that the Jelly Bean update is pushed out for this phone. Only time will tell.

According to this, the Motorola Defy will get JB and it's reasonable that the newest devices will too...

Your best bet is a to go for a Nexus device it you want something that is close to being future proof. I kind of know what you are going through with waiting for a new nexus phone part of the reason I didn't drop $350 GNex. The best advice I can say is go with the AHD for now, you can even get one for $50 on contract from best buy or amazon as long are you don't mind going with the new tiered plans.

The good news is that AT&T isn't forcing you onto the new shared data plans...yet. I figure they'll eventually decide to do that to keep up with Verizon, but for now they look a little better because of it.

Why do people still think best buy can't keep unlimited plans? Hasn't this dumb rumor been squashed months ago? Sure there may have been some dumb bbym guy that sucked at his job and lost someone unlimited but don't bunch us all in with his uneducated ass. Come see me, I got you on unlimited.

Doesn't BestBuy charge you a Restocking Fee if you decide to return anything, especially a phone? Plus certain electronics only have 15 days instead of 30 days to return an item. If this is still true...save yourself the headache and get it from Costco (at their store or online with free shipping) and they give you free accessories (see my post about Costco just a few days ago).
If BestBuy has changed their policy, good but I can't tell you how long it's been since I've stepped foot in their store because of this. It's maybe part of the reason why they're struggling with their stores and trying to hang on to their mobile wireless departments.

OK.. so this thread turned from a JB discussion to Best Buy? LOL. I'm about to pull the trigger on either the AHD or GS3 and am having a tough time deciding due to the JB issue and a few others. From the sounds of most of the comments here, it doesn't appear likely that Moto will offer the JB update, or am I missing something? The GS3 is a nice phone, but the screen on the AHD is far superior and the build quality of the Moto phone seems solid. What do you guys in this forum think? AT&T will sell me either phone for 50% off, no activation fee and a credit back to my account for the CA sales tax too

You strike me as someone who intends on modding ur phone, running roms and other mods or apps that require root so that makes the decision very easy, the GS3. It comes with an unlocked bootloader, root was gained before the phone was even released, the dev support is massive, aftermarket support is amazing, and JB is coming soon! Dont like the battery life? You can use a higher capacity battery if you choose. The camera is lovely! Especially since you're gonna be getting it for half off, that makes it a no brainer!

Gadgetz.... thanks.. Actually your assumption is a little off base and that's due to me having been an iOS person for the past 4 years. And it's also the reason I'm drawn to Android, and even moreso after having watched the various vids about JB and Google Now.. simply amazing new version of Android.
So if I understand what you're saying, you're recommending I go with the GS3 for various reasons, regardless of me not liking the blue tint on AMOLED screens. And I can understand this to some degree. Also, when you install Nova I thought it only changed the look of the home pages and icons. Are you saying that it completely changes the UI including the notification bar where you can toggle on/off for Bluetooth, GPS, Wifi, etc? Sorry, but I'm a noob. I do like the new garnet red color on the GS3 but all of them are fingerprint magnets as you know. What case and screen protector do you recommend? Already found a high end, class 10 32mb microSD for $35 on eBay.

So I'm having a bit of a conundrum. My current RAZR M is very nice, but is facing a few problems (I won't go into detail). After a lot of research, I've decided the Moto X will most likely be my next phone. Some additional motivation is I have a $50 coupon off a new Moto X and tomorrow starts Motorola's Moto X Valentine's Day sale. It seems like a good time to pick one up.
My question is should I get the Dev version with the black front with white backing, to which I'm not a huge fan of or get a MotoMaker version and design one that I like? Like most here, once I get my hands on the device, I'm going to want to root it and start tweaking everything to my liking. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There have been lots of threads on this. Searching is good.
The cheapest, most customizable and most tweakable is the T-Mobile version. this comes already carrier unlocked, and you can unlock its bootloader easily.

I'm assuming you're a VZW customer, and planning to stay as one... So don't get the Tmobile version.
What means more to you, a customized look, or the ability to unlock it? Unlocking guarantees you the ability to root. While you can root the VZW moto maker phones, you cannot now, and likely will never be able to unlock it.

To be fair, I did search and not just here. Most what I found were people moving from "top-tier" model phones. The other being that the prices have change a bit from the release date. I will keep you advice in mind though.
I was thining the T-Mobile version would be the best too. From what I've read, it'll be a bit of work but that is part of the fun.

While I may not like to context of your analogy, you message is clear. Getting a beautiful phone and putting forth a bit of work to making fully my own may be worth it in the end.

When I originally got my RAZR M, I was on VZW (prepaid to be exact), the tweaks I had done to make it work on their network caused to phone to not play well with the network at times. I removed the frequency block on the radio and now am running my RAZR M with a GoPhone SIM. Works much better even if AT&T's coverage isn't as good a VZW's in my area.

Moto Maker versus Developer Edition (VZW)

Yes, I know this has been beaten to death, but I have also found myself in the "which one" boat. Has anyone else been torn and made the decision? how do you feel about your choice? thoughts?
I don't like the color scheme of the dev edition, but i like the concept of ensured root and custom ROMs, if development picks up pace. That being said, I get the impression that CM and other non-stock roms lose the beautiful features of touchless control and active notifications. Is this still true? If so, is there hope for it in the future? Is there any real advantage to the DE other than not having to wait for a root exploit? I'm currently very happy on eclipse, but i did find myself frustrated while waiting for a 4.4 root exploit. Anyway, just looking to get some general impressions on whose happy with having chosen one or the other and why. And also, if you've tried DE-only ROMS, which ones and what you thought of them.

I fought this very same thing ... Really not into a two-toned phone LOL
But after playing with the Moto Maker site and seeing my custom 32GB ebony/black/silver device was the same exact price as a dev edition device, I promptly removed the custom device from my cart and got the dev edition. I know I will root, not necessarily ROM, so why not take the path of least resistance? Also, I'll definitely be getting a case so there's a good chance that eventually all those customizations will be hidden anyway.

I got a 16gig retail "black woven" Demo X from Verizon in early Sept that I used for two months. This was the first phone in a long while that I didn't use a case for. It felt great in my hand. I didn't drop it. And after using it, I saw little need to root. Tethering was the biggest draw for root, along with blocking ads.
I've never been a fan of alternate ROMs. The ones I've tried on past phones always had bugs or issues, got updated frequently, etc. I spent more time "debugging" and "flashing" my phone than actually using it. With its stock ROM, the X just works and is so close to stock android that I don't want to mess that up with a custom rom. So I haven't really looked into the availability of the custom Moto X features (like active display, voice control, etc)
In early Nov when it came time to send the demo back, I opted to purchase the Dev Edition X for Verizon. At the time it was way more expensive, voided the warranty to unlock the bootloader, but the only 32gig option for Verizon, and most important to me was the ability to root without waiting on an exploit. When the Kit Kat root came out so fast, I was kind of kicking myself for not just using an upgrade and getting the Retail X. BUT.. seeing how involved the SlapMyMoto & MotoWpNoMo processes are compared to rooting the Dev Edition X, I felt better about my purchase. With the Dev X, its just flash TWRP recovery, boot into it and install SuperSU no matter what version stock ROM you are running. There is also the unknown of the 4.4.2 update coming, what is needed to install it if you've rooted with SlapMyMoto, and how to re-root if you have a locked boot loader. That wont be a problem with the Dev Ed. And recently Moto changed their policy about unlocking the Dev Edition bootloader, it no longer voids the warranty, and they re-instated the warranties which also makes me feel better.
I wouldn't say I'm a "fan" of the Dev Ed backing, either color or its slipperiness. The texture of the black woven demo I had was different/better. I have dropped my Dev X at home (on the carpet thankfully). To solve the lack of grip, I got one of those XtremeGuard full body kits when they were on sale for like $2.50 including shipping. I've only put the back on my phone and it has helped. I also have a SUPCASE and a Minisuit Clipster The cases do cover up the back, so had I opted for a MotoMaker, I wouldn't see its back when in the case. While both cases do alter the size and feel a little, its not enough to make me not use the case.
In the end, its up to you. Ease of Root and Write Protection Enable, Possibility of running 3rd party ROMs (which may cost you the Moto X features) vs custom colors and trim which might get covered by a case anyway, and may be less slippery without a case, and uncertainty of rooting.
Oh, and you can still use safe strap to run a few "custom" roms on the motomaker X.

I had the same struggle then concluded that I know I'll put a case on it and I know I hate bloatware, google included, and will want to remove it so I chose the developer edition...

Make life easier on yourself and go with the Dev Edition. You have guaranteed control of your phone.
ROMing on this phone is almost pointless with GravityBox being able to customize almost anything you'd get on a custom ROM anyway, as long as you can root. That makes the Dev edition not as important, but it also means root is required and that is only guaranteed with the Dev edition.

I got a Moto Maker version, and while I love the phone, I do sorta regret not getting a Dev Edition. I haven't bothered to root my phone, since this phone is so fantastic on its own (and I figured out how to restore app data), but it would be nice to unlock the bootloader in case I wanted to try some ROMs.
That being said, personally, I think stock Moto X is superior to CyanogenMod (which I have on other devices). And there isn't any real bloatware (since you can always Disable it).

Bought a MotoMaker and don't regret not opting for the Dev Edition at all. The root process wasn't difficult at all. If you think that it was, stop using toolkits. I'm not a developer nor do I work in the IT industry, I'm just a tech geek like most people here. Knowing how to use adb and fastboot has saved my ass many times

Ha, well the funny thing is, I AM a developer, so part of me likes the crazy exploits that came out for the Moto X. But I'm getting to a point in my life where, between work, a relationship, and all the little things in between, time is an increasingly rare commodity. When the telnet root exploit came out, I was like "wow, what a wizard to have figured that out!", and it was kind of fun, but then especially having to do it again on 4.4, reading about, setting up, and actually executing the exploit can be time consuming. It's not challenging, just time consuming. Why spend an hour or two doing that when I could spend 10 minutes flashing SU in twrp? Also, when 4.4 came out, I found myself checking the forum daily for a new root exploit, reading up on things, and overall just being very anxious for it. Again, that's time I could have spent doing other things if I had had the DE.
Thus, as it has been with many other decisions in my life, I will have to go the path of function over form. I am pretty set on getting the DE now (unless in the next couple days a Droid 5 is confirmed XD miss my physical keyboard). I'll just get that SUPCASE that was posted above, as I think the black/black variant looks rather nice, and will cover up the white that I don't like. Plus, there's an excuse for protecting my phone, eh?
Even if I just end up running Eclipse on it anyway, I think I like knowing that when 4.4.2 and eventually other versions of android come out, I will be able to root immediately and easily. And if custom roms continue to make progress, I'll have those options as well.
Plus, I was also reading there's a tutorial for removing the backplate, and backplates have shown up on ebay.

If it takes "you" an hour or two to root this phone, it's probably best that "you" not attempt it yourself. It's as simple as downloading a few files, reading some instructions, then typing them in letter for letter.
If you have enough time to browse and post on this forum, you have enough time to root this device. Took me all of 15 mins.

As far as I know, MM only migrates photos, videos, texts, calls, etc., but not app data like saved games, shared preferences, etc. I could be wrong, haven't tried it

Unless "you" simply look at commands and then type them, i don't think that's a 15 minute process. I think it is safe to assume that a majority of people like to understand the risk of a new root exploit. You're telling me when the telnet exploit came out for the very first time, it took you 15 minutes? I for one like to read about the potential risks, how the exploit works (best to stay informed, eh?), others' experiences with it thus far, etc. I don't think that's an atypical pattern. Yea, now that I've read about it and already know it, I can brush through a re-root quite quickly, but unless you're just going into a blind I don't think running a new exploit is a 15 minute process in most cases.
Sorry if that sounded a little disgruntled. I just couldn't help but get a "you don't seem good enough to muss about with your phone" vibe from that. Perhaps I should have been a little more particular, and mentioned that i was thinking more along the lines of the first time you run a new root exploit.

The Lenovo deal wouldn't stop me. I went through the IBM PC division sold to Lenovo, and have been using Thinkpads since about 1995. They haven't screwed up the Thinkpads after all this time, so I'm hopeful they don't screw up the Moto devices.

Yea, I've been doing a lot of reading on it. Strong arguments on both sides. Either way, I suppose even if they do muss about with stuff, we'll definitely get 4.4.2. Who knows if future updates might have some bloat on them, or how long it'll take to get them. But with the developer edition, I guess that's much less of a concern. Plus, considering how popular this phone has been, it's hard to believe anyone would want to drop good support for it.

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't get it but I'm trying to order a Pure edition 2014 model on Motorola site but then it asks me to choose AT&T or Verizon. I thought pure edition was basically good for any carrier. Am I wrong do I have to pick carrier when buying Pure? Thanks.

AFAIK pure edition is when you choose T-Mobile version. It will work with at&t but won't work with Verizon. Its the only one without carrier branding and their apps, that's why it is called as a pure edition.

On that page under "Choose Your Plan Type" you have to select unlocked without a contract. Then the Pure edition will be an option.

Yeah, it comes with a T-Mobile sim but works just fine on AT&T. I'm using mine on AT&T so I can vouch for it.
They are out of stock with some color choices it seems. I want to send mine back for a different color combo but they are out of stock of the black fronts with 32gb. Hopefully they'll be back in stock before my exchange window is up.

Yep! Everything works perfectly. Just put your sim in and run with it.

Really glad I'm not the only one who was confused by that. Unfortunately I made the mistake of ordering the AT&T version and had to return it and re-order a Pure edition. Got it all worked out and am now happily running an unlocked, rooted Pure Edition on AT&T.

Tried to order OPO, couldn't get through so just ordered Pure X. Can't wait to get it. Hope positive reviews are accurate and really hope negative reviews are not that true. I'm moving up from Nexus 4 so I'm thinking should be a significant jump up. Even ordered sim cutter to chop my AT&T sim down.

I had the OPO and sold it after 3 days. Trust me when I say this- you did the right thing by going with the X. It's in a class all its own. And coming from the Nexus 4, be prepared to be blown away. Taking all factors into account, the X is the best device currently available, IMO.
Why the sim cutter though? Just go to AT&T and get a nano sim.

Thanks that's good feedback! I'm looking forward to it. I opted to cut my sim because I have att service through straight talk so a new sim is $15 or so.

I just cancelled my OPO pre-order to go with this.
I'm paying more, but I just didn't feel happy with the size jump from Nexus 5 to OPO. I really just wanted an upgrade to my Nexus 5 to do me for the year.
Hope the development scene picks up for this, with us having a pure version.

I hope dev picks up for the X too. I was able to get student discount so if you can get it, saves you $50.

You guys are both going to love it. I have a Nexus 5 too, and it's a decent upgrade. Both phones are incredibly fast, but the Moto X is a much more elegant device.
@Audioboxer- What kind of development are you hoping for? The general consensus with last years Moto X was that the stock software was so good, that no custom ROM was needed. The 2014 Moto X is even better; I can't imagine why someone would want to flash a custom ROM. Not to mention the fact that you would lose the great Motorola features with a lot of ROMs. For me, stock ROM + Xposed is perfect.

I'm more so interested in seeing some kernel development (always helps with battery), for the reasons you posted (especially with Android L).
Guess I'm a bit sad this is a 2,300mah battery, but with an AMOLED screen it should be better than the Nexus5.

2300mah seems small, but I can get 6+ hours screen time on my Moto X which is pretty good, IMO. It gets better battery life than the N5 so it's an upgrade regardless. In the Moto X's case, I'd rather it have the battery it has, than a larger one requiring the phone to be thicker.

It's a tough decision. I have the regular black back, but I'm considering swapping it for a leather one. My buddy just ordered his leather one, so I'm gonna wait and see his and then make my decision. I'm just concerned that the leather will get damaged over time.
The regular back is nice and grippy. It has a great soft touch coating on it.

The Moto X UK site has a sale on for 24 hours today as well Must be fate! Haha.

Noticed that Cyanogenmod didn't really take off on the original Moto X. I'd hope with this years having modern specs we'd at least see Cyanogenmod popup in here for our Pure Editions :good:

It is entirely too unweildy for me for everyday usage.
Basic things like it not fitting in the cup holder or the dedicated cellphone pocket in my truck, not to mention being very afraid of dropping it because of the slick sides and back.

The Nexus 5 sounds like it would be the perfect device for you. It will give you the Nexus experience, runs on Lollipop now, early updates, and it is still officially supported by Google. I upgraded my Nexus 5 to Lollipop and runs great on it. Unfortunately now, it is retired to its box as a backup

AT&T and TMo are not sufficient for my coverage needs.
Back to my Moto X (2013) for now.
Hopefully, they release a "N6 Minus" (hahaha)
If anyone in Houston wants a 1 day old N6, I'll happily sell it at cost rather than return it to Google Play.

My nexus 5 is also back in its original box.

Since you are with Verizon, why not get the Droid Turbo? Seems like a solid upgrade from the Moto X (2013) and it's easily one of the best phones you can get on Verizon.

I would highly advise against this. The turbo has a ton of bugs as of right now. May become better over time but it is a flawed device.

Screen brightness is terrible, speaker volume is a joke, battery life is abysmal, quick charging is as fast as regular charging, phone gets ridiculously hot, some users including myself and on the Verge experience terrible screen scrolling lag, you can't remove the Google search bar which is persistent on every screen, camera is very slow.

Did you buy through Motorola or the play store? Why not get your money back and buy the new moto x outright. Sounds like exactly what you're wanting from the nexus, plus it got lollipop already before any other carrier version. What bizarre world did I wake up in today?
