Here is the situation:
My Vivid is in Ask Me mode, but when I connect it to my PC it doesn't ask. In fact, it does nothing.
The computer, using Windows Explorer, sees the phone as 2 removable disk drives with no disks in them; the device manager sees My HTC as an Android USB Device. Both of these go away when the phone is disconnected from the PC and reappear as soon as it is reconnected.
HTC Sync says No device connected.
The bottom line is that I can't sync and I can't copy files.
Things I've tried include reinstalling HTC Sync, changing the USB cable, and reinstalling various drivers, including after disabling most services.
Suggestions?

Uninstall HTC sync... And reinstall it...
Or...
Let's assume that HTC decided to remove the adb and fastboot stuff...

I have uninstalled and reinstalled HTC Sync several times.
adb.exe starts running as soon as I connect the phone to the PC.
I think you're looking in the wrong place. I think the problem is in the phone because it doesn't acknowledge that it has been connected to the computer.

FIXED! I found the solution on another forum. All I had to do was turn off my phone using Restart and plug it in. Worked like a charm!

When I flashed my phone back down to 2.1 using Odin3 from the leaked 2.2, my computer was still able to detect my phone when plugged in using USB. I reinstalled Titanium backup and restored all my apps and now my computer no longer detects my phone as being plugged in.
Development mode is on and it still charges when plugged into the computer but nothing else. I can't mount it the sdcard to transfer files either.
I've installed and reinstalled SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2 and the drivers in the Odin3 thread several times and nothing has worked. Anyone else got ideals?

Ok so I found the problem. It has something to do w/ the software update, which seemed to be kept on for some reason. Everytime I restarted the phone it said communication error w/ the server, it does this without me even touching software update. So I turned off wifi and 3g, effectively turning off the software update and now my computer detects the phone. I don't know why this is, but it worked.

That would be a possible fix IF the option was there when u pull down the status bar. In my situation the USB symbol never appears. Even when I go into settings and mount the SD card there, it doesn't work.

Erm, okay:
-Unlock your phone's screen; rest it at homescreen
-Connect your already-plugged-into-computer USB cable to phone (in a timely fashion, before the screen autolocks)
-See if you get a noti' (and if not, then how does the phone respond when you plug your cable into it?)

Mac is basically linux, and from my experience with linux, you need to configure some stuff in order to get things working, i'm on the phone right now so i don't have a link to share but i recommend looking online.for.a tutorial to build AOSP from source on linux or MAC, there you will.find the steps needed to set up your USB configuration, ignore the rest after the config or.what is not needed.
Hope this helps.

My laptop only has USB 3.0 ports. I could get HTC sync to work fine, but the PC wouldn't recognize the phone when in the bootloader. I was struggling to find an answer until I came across this blog and this worked flawlessly. The problem is with the Microsoft USB 3 host controller. This method replaces 2 Microsoft drivers with Intel drivers.
http://plugable.com/2012/12/01/windows-8-and-intel-usb-3-0-host-controllers
Follow this to a T. It does require rebooting the PC to disable driver signing, so make sure you bookmark the link to go back to it after you rebooted. If this helps you, just press the thanks button!

when you say a statement like "I cannot connect my phone to my PC" that really isn't saying much. but let's say you mean that your phone isn't being recognized as connected, plugged in as unknown device at all.
First thing you need to do is figure out who the culprit is, is it your android phone or your windows PC. Easy check: try plugging in your phone in another PC. at the very least it should pop up as a connected unknown device, or as your moto model number. if one PC doesn't show it try as many as you have access to.
You can also try plugging in other devices in your original windows PC and see if they're recognized.
so there are a few scenarios but I'll pick one scenario where your phone connects to the other PCs and your computer recognizes other devices. in this case (or even in most cases) I'd suspect a problem or conflict in the device manager of your PC. plug in your phone and go into control panel, device manager and look through it, look at the USB connections, look for any yellow error triangles, and if you notice something fishy uninstall the device and unplug and replug your phone.
keep trying at the end of the day you're the only one with physical access to your hardware so you're the one in the best position to troubleshoot it.
was doing it as a quick suggestion... as the previous posts says, u didn't tell us much info... we don't know what you've done, nor tried...
