[Q] - General Questions about the XT1058 - Moto X Q&A

Hello guys.
I've a XT1058 , it's a new phone in replacement of my old Milestone 2 (you might know this as Droid 2) that died a few weeks ago...
And I've some questions about the phone
These questions are very specific, because I'm trying to determine if there's something wrong with the phone, I've a few days to return it and have another one, no questions asked.
1) I know AMOLED displays are not perfect when it comes to really low brightness. I've noticed that when the screen shows a 'solid' white (like when writing a new SMS) there are some kind of horizontal lines, maybe separated by 0,1 mm, that are consistent all over the screen. These 'lines' are a different kind of white... If I just rock the brightness level up all the way, they are still present, but they are harder to spot...
It's like a solid white is not actually solid, nor homogeneous.
Is this expected?
2) the vibrator makes a sound, like it's a bit loose sometimes.. this sound does not appear all the time, but my mom has a motorola defy+ that doesn't show this issue... the sound is very distinct, like a note higher than what you would expect.
3) Is there any way to actually use Google Navigator without having a destination set?. In older versions I could use it like that, that is just turn on the GPS, and then open Navigator's Map... It would give all the information you need, it will not allow the screen to go off... So, you could just free roam with it... I was not able to do that on the MotoX yet.
I know some of these questions are just because me being picky, but would like to know your insights about them.
Thanks!

Questions about the Nexus

Hi I am new to android and am considering switching from my iphone 3gs to a nexus one (or possible samsung captivate) It would be great if yall could answer these questions and any other helpful information you have on the phone!
1. How are the touch sensitive buttons on the bottom of the phone? Do yall ever have any trouble activating them or anything?
2. How is the battery life on this phone? I use my phone for texting ALOT, probably 5000 messages a month. Will i still be able to get a good days use out of the phone? That's all i really need because i charge it at night anyway. Also does rooting the phone and installing different ROMs or kernels improve battery life, or any other improvements over stock android? If so, which ones would you recommend for this.
3. I've read about screen burn in and some touch screen issues, have yall experienced any of these first hand?
I would be very appreciative if you could answer these questions for me
1. How are the touch sensitive buttons on the bottom of the phone? Do yall ever have any trouble activating them or anything?
I don't but my wife does. However, she tends to mash the screen with the side of her thumb because she is a blackberry user and has long nails. As an iphone user I'd think you'd be fine. You'll LOVE Swype.
2. How is the battery life on this phone? I use my phone for texting ALOT, probably 5000 messages a month. Will i still be able to get a good days use out of the phone? My N1 lasts all day easily, unless I'm doing something crazy like wireless tethering without a charger. That said I have a 2nd battery on a home charger because I hate (or badly forget about) leaving my phone plugged in EVER. Mostly I swap the battery in the morning on my way out. Froyo boots up fast!
3. I've read about screen burn in and some touch screen issues, have yall experienced any of these first hand?
I would be very appreciative if you could answer these questions for me.
Have not noticed any burn in issues yet. The contrast on the N1 AMOLED is a gorgeous thing to behold. It has a nicer image than my LED backlit Samsung TV, which is no chump.
However, the phone's screen struggles terribly in direct sunlight.
1. Touch buttons have been improved and are more responsive after the Froyo update.
2. Can be be good, can be bad. Should last you the day, but with heavy texting i wouldn't know. If you unlock and root it you can experiment with different roms and kernels to improve it. When i got my phone with stock 2.1 -update1 the battery was average. But then i unlocked it and flashe Cyanogen ROM and the battery got way better. So it is up to you. Unlocking and rooting voids warranty, but HTC have been kind to fix/replace phone as long as you re-flash stock to it.
3. Has happened to some. Mostly i think is due to the white status-bar that with long use on highest brightness. It can happen because it is fixed on one place allowing the white and bright burn gradually into the screen. Like the old Tv's (pre-plasma) you know. Leave it on overnight with a still image actually burns the image on the screen when turning it off. Old news really . Again, rooting it will allow you to install a black status bar thus eliminate the threat of a screen burn.
Most phones like these struggles in sunlight. But when beefing brightness to MAX it actually is "OK" to use it in the sun.
i have the slight burn in. its very faint and you would not even notice it AT ALL its that minor. but the problem is google made the status bar all white, and it never moves from that position of the screen no matter what you are doing with the phone. so because its amoled screen, those pixels wore out slightly quicker.
there is an easy way to avoid this problem, change to an all black color status bar. problem solved however you need to root in order to do this. good news is that now you can root without unlocking the bootloader, so HTC can never tell the phone was rooted, in case you were worried about voiding the warranty.
How can you root without unlocking the bootloader? And how do you change the color of the notification bar? Is there a simple themeing application like there is on jailbroken iphones?
Look in Developers section for the non-unlocking rooting thread.
(personally - I don't live in US so warranty means nothing to me, my phone was rooted after ~2 hours I took to check intact parts functionality).
Look up "Metamorph" in Apps section.
Another question, my girlfriend recently got the mytouch 3g. It works pretty decent and everything, but it is quite noticeably choppy. I would assume the nexus one is very smooth due to the 1ghz processor?

HTC One vibration sound

Picked up this phone just today and my god I love this phone to death but every phone comes with complaints. Most things arent big and will just take time to get used to but this one I cannot ignore. I love having the vibrate on keypress option selected and the HTC One when it vibrates makes this very unpleasant loose spring like sound whenever it vibrates. Am I the only one thats noticed this or is this every device?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
many people do have this ... me too.... thats my second device and both of them got this crappy vibration sound...
i replaced it because of that .... but because of that i disabled every vibration functions on this phone to get rit of it ....
so i guess you have to live with it ... try to replace it and hope you get one with a good vibration motor or disable all vibrations

Isnt that due to the OIS? Not sure about but all of my 4 Ones had that. The One of a friend also sounds like that. I´m ok with it.

I'm sure there will be soon an option in custom roms to control vibration intensity, and put it to the value you like! it's only a matter of time, I'm sure!
[I'm sure there will I am currently facing the same issue with my replacement and thinking about replacing it again but hesitant because every device comes with its own minor defects, u only notice the alight clicking in a very quite environment and only on short vibrates such as when typing, but to be honest this is as perfect as it can get, everything seems to work with this device with no problems except this, and I might apply for a replacement and end up with a worst unit and another major issue, I have emailed HTC complaining about their quality control, cuz my first device had gaps and a tiny hair under the screen, my second device had a touchscreen problem and now this one which has a minor vibration sound.
The problem is I am too picky when it comes to this kind of stuff and a little ocd about them so I am positive that other people won't even notice the issue and even the repair tech might claim it's normal and in all devices. So yeah
my device is work related so giving it to them for 2 full days is kind of troublesome for me
add me to the list
I have had my HTC One for 2 days now. I too noticed this on mine. I just chalked it up to the phone being all aluminum case vs my old EVO was plastic/metal. I have a few other complaints too lol.
Ok the rants!
1. Why did you have to move all the buttons all over the place? Seems like every button is opposite to other android phones? Especially moving the power button to the far left? Who designed this? Must of been a left handed person. Come on at least compromise and put in the middle! Stupid!
2. Why limit to only 3 buttons at the bottom of the HTC one and in all actuality...you never enabled the "HTC" to be a button so we are stuck with 2! Most phones have at least 3! Again Stupid!
3. The Home button and back buttons. Ok maybe the person designed this drives on the wrong side of the road or goes in the exit door or something? The buttons need to be flipped in my humble opinion. Home first (left side) or at least in the middle, back button to the left or right sides. OH and bring back the quick access button!
4. Ok speaking of the "HTC" logo/button at the bottom. Why put in circuitry for it to be a button and then not enable it? Stupid #3!
5. The widgets for "Bluetooth", Wireless", "Mobile", and "GPS". Why light blue for the "on notification". Seems like a **** poor color choice. At least a green or red would be fairly noticeable considering the widget itself is blue? Hello.....great designing there.
6. The power button. More recessed then ever before making it difficult to push down or even find. No step up here.
7. Lock screen can only have 1 widget on it? Really? Wow...couple steps back here.
8. Full animated weather locking screen gone/no longer available because HTC forces you to use their one and ONLY ONE version their crappy line art weather on the lock screen. I don't mind the plain jane weather for showing up in the app list but placing it on the bottom of the lock screen with nothing else is horrible. I want my weather back to the lock screen. I know I have mentioned it a lot...sorry pet peeve, have it it so long on all my other phones.
9. I won't mention Blinkfeed. I have that pushed off the side and hear that sense 5.5 is around the corner which will allow you to finally turn the damn thing off.
Hey guys, I wanted to point out that you can reduce the vibration intensity, therefore getting rid of the "springy" feeling! Just download FauxClock. (Yes you need root of course). Gratefully this app doesn't require you to flash anything, it just needs BusyBox. The only downside to reducing the intensity is after so far you basically lose haptic feedback. (I wanted to reduce notification buzz.) And this is where I went with plan B.
Plan B (NO ROOT!): This method, you guys, will make you feel real dumb for not thinking of. Personally I did this to get rid of notification buzz but keep haptic feedback, but you can also just turn off buzz on certain apps. Simply open up App-ops on Android 4.3, go through all your apps, and untick the "Vibration" permission! That's it guys! Feel dumb now?
Note: to open App-ops is an activity, you can download App-ops launchers from Play Store or, in my case, I used a Tasker task.

Just picked up this phone

I wanted something more durable especially when it comes to water and since I was switching to AT&T the Active was an obvious choice. I've had the phone for a few days now and I'm really pleased with it, especially the camera and battery life. The first day I had almost 4 hours of screen on time which was close to full brightness and still had over 40% battery left. I thought that had to be a fluke or something but it's clearly not. Now to the point of my post, why is this phone not very popular? Why anyone would choose the regular S6 over the Active is beyond me. Does anyone think we'll ever see root on this phone? I'm very pleased with it out of the box but there's a few things I'd love root for. Like why does there have to be a persistent notification telling me I'm connected to wifi. That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen. I couldn't believe it couldn't be turned off.
Edit:
Gotta change that sig as its all wrong now, lol.

What are some of your cons for the device?
I've heard various things about it, such as there's some faint line down the side of the screen on most all models.
Some people claim that the speak on speaker call sucks.
etc etc. Anything you don't really like about the phone that could be most people's gripe about it?
Mine works great. Nothing to complain about...

First, fingerprint sensor. I need security but entering pin/code every time I wanted to unlock the phone was cumbersome.
Second, is availability at the time of purchase. It wasn't apparently available with carriers in Canada.
Third, popularity, and community development and support. Galaxy s6 has more users, and therefore, more developers working on its rom.
Fourth, availability of accessories due to Galaxy S6 owner population vs Active.
I can overlook all other points, but missing the fingerprint sensor was a deal breaker for me.
For me, the lack of a fingerprint scanner isn't a deal-breaker. I guess I'm 'old school' or something. Though I understand the convenience of it.
I'm on the edge of picking up this phone, but, kind of worried about what type of specs the S7 Active will have and will it be worth the wait.
Currently with the S6 Active, my concerns are:
No Root (not a deal breaker)
Slowness of AT&T updates (not a deal breaker if ODIN is reliable and we can get timely firmware updates outside of AT&T)
Length of time it's taking to get to Marshmellow
Quality of speaker and using the speaker phone (I've heard that it's not too hot)
Lack of accessories (agree with you on this, doesn't seem a lot out there)
What I don't like about S6 Active:
Placement of the audio jack port. Really should be on the bottom, like the S6
No expandable memory option
No removable battery option (Not really a deal breaker if the battery has no issues and will remain effective for at least 3-4 years.)
Not enough bands to support international carriers and carrier aggregation support to the fullest by having as many bands possible (Not really a deal breaker, as I'll get a few where I am).
Touch-Wiz. Rather to to some stock android OS rather than have all the crap on the phone. (relates to having a root)
But beyond all of the above, the phone looks really really nice and I'll likely pick it up anyways, for lack of anything better, IMO.
I was thinking Nexus 6P, but it's just too big for me.
Nexus 5X, just kinda of too weak for me. (has less bands than Nexus 6P, actually)
I was thinking just a regular S6, but like the Active design better.
Just bought one,for durability, came from the V10 and loving it so far.
Succumbed
Well, I picked up this phone(64GB Version). Got it to update to 5.1.1.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but this phone is simply beautiful.
The weighting and feel is also very very nice.
It's a quite zippy and fast phone.
So far, on the whole I'm liking this phone alot.
However some points I've come across. Any suggestions or resolutions welcome.
Minor Dislikes:
Forced to see carrier's name on top-left of lock screen (Not just specific to this phone)
└ I'd prefer to see useful icons on the status bar(left-hand side) during the phone being locked.
Notifications Management
└ In order to remove Heads UP notifications, I've had to download an application like: HeadsOff└ Some applications, in order to see the icon in the status bar, the rectangular static notification remains on the lock screen, wasting screen real-estate. There's no way to remove this static notification from the lock screen without adjusting the settings to remove notifications from the app, and then that removes the icon in the status bar.└ Some applications like Accu Radio won't show the player controls on the lock screen. No matter what combination of notification settings are used. (Not really the phone's fault but..)
Fingerprint Scanner Lacking
└ While the Active doesn't have a fingerprint button to scan fingerprint to unlock the phone, I thought Samsung had some models that used the actual screen to do this. If so, the option would be nice to have on the Active
Headphone Jack Location (Not just specific to this phone)
└ I still don't see why phone makers are putting the jack at the top of the phone. Many people put their phone in their pocket. The natural insertion direction is the way one is holding it at the time of use, the top goes into the pocket first. Yet if the audio cable/jack is jutting out from the top, it makes it hard to put in the pocket, as well as decreases the life of the cable, etc. (not a deal-breaker, but an annoyance for sure)
Touchscreen SUPER sensitive
└ I've found that the screen is simply overly sensitive to touch and find myself many times mistakenly activating something else, before my finger even touches the screen.└ Currently I do not have a screen protector for the phone, so not sure this will matter.
Other's Pain points:
Speaker Location/Quality
└ While the speaker isn't in the best of locations, I haven't really noticed and sound degradation/quality. It's a mini speaker. We can't expect blasting Dolby 7.1 haha
Active Key easy to press accidently
└ I have not found any problem with this, and I typically don't encounter having this button activated unintentionally with my day to day use.└ Some applications like Accu Radio won't show the player controls on the lock screen. No matter what combination of notification settings are used. (Not really the phone's fault but..)
Fingerprint Scanner Lacking

Add another dislike:
Samsung Touchwiz and how it handles, doesn't allow handling of LED definition.
Unfortunately, Samsung, in their infinite wisdom, have blown up their Touchwiz and made it virtually impossible for applications like Lightflow, to define custom LED colors for applications.
The best that can happen is that some 'workaround' by the author of Lightflow can be used, but that just leaves the Badges and Notifications icons on the status bar for you to clear out manually, after reading your email or messages.
Price to pay to have any control over LED.....
Just one more reason I want root....

Glance while charging, whatsapp in glance, Camera, Notification LED, VR etc.

Hi there, I thought Nokia (HGD) is fast in terms of...acting...but I gathered some things that stayed unanswered until today :
1.)
I already found out that the "Glance" Screen (clock and infos) will stay "always on" while the phone is charging.
And it is called a feature ? Really !? Why on earth... @[email protected]
No update on the official "Glance" thread by Nokia :
https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000011762
I also think this is really annoying, having to turn it off while having to charge the phone overnight.
And as it is a LCD screen, what about so called burn-in effects or ghosting ?
2.)
On lowest brightness, on a black screen, I can actually see where I touched the touchscreen, as it leaves somekind of "wobbly effect(?) for less then a second.
Is that normal ?
3.)
Why is it hard coded, that the Glance screen does not react to whatsapp notifications, but only mails or sms ?
Also no answers by Nokia :
https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000011914
4.)
The camera is "okay", and I knew it before the purchase. But seeing how others already managed to start another camera apk, with better results, makes me wonder, why Nokia did not add some more quality here.
5.)
Notification LED. Its not there, but like on many others phones, people managed to use the capacitive buttons, making em blink on notifications.
Any news on this ?
6.)
hmd-promotions.de is offline since days, but I was able to order my free Zeiss VR one before it went offline. Now, I contacted HMD global, as Id like to know when and how my ZEISS VR One will be delivered.
Anyone got the same experience here ?
Again my hope is on XDA, instead of the mobile phone manufacturer...finalizing this phone, once the bootloader gets (un)officially unlocked.
Please, try harder Nokia, you could have at least added snake.
1. Because it is an IPS LCD screen there is no screen burn. Screen burn is problem with amoled screens
2. No idea
3. Idk why but telegram reacts with glance
4. They were working on it.
5. Need BLN supported kernel have to wait for bootloader unlock or HMD will implement it in the official kernel.
6. Idk the issue
I just want to add that i have problem with Glance. When it is on screen stutters like hell. There is a clock speed problem i think and it happened after oreo.

1) If you put the device with the screen facing down, Glance turns off, as well as the screen, regardless of the device is charging or not.
2) I do not have anything like that, do you exert too much pressure? maybe it's just an optical effect due to the slight fogging caused by the exudation of your fingers.
The other questions have already answered you

Can someone explain MotoDisplay to me

So I'm coming from a 5X that had a nice RGB LED, I was able to set different colors for different apps and could tell from across the room what if any notifications I had - no need to look at it for more than a second or 2 or pick it up or anything. I could then respond accordingly: White - email, probably just spam ignore it; Green - text, get to it when not busy; Pink - tinder, drop the baby and run for the phone.
With the x4 I seem to have taken a step backwards - the screen lights up with the clock and an icon for whatever notification (but I have to be standing right by the phone to see the specific icon). But the bigger issue is it only lights up once when the notification comes in - I really don't need to know I have a notification when it comes in (I heard the chime or vibrate) but I would love to be able to walk away from my phone, glance at it and know if I missed anything without having to pick it up. I'm not sure a world where I have to move my phone every time I come back to it could be considered convenient.
From what I have seen online it described the phone has breathing (pulsing every now and then) when you have an active notification, but this was earlier Moto models - I get just one notification at the time it comes in and nothing else ever. Unless I move the phone - which brings me to the 2nd issue, the sensitivity of the motion sensor, I can have the phone on my desk or couch cushion next to me and just placing a remote down near it or typing the phone is constantly lighting up (even when I don't have a notification) I have the Approach for Moto Display turned off and it definitely has to be moved, but just the tiniest of amount - I get the feature is designed for people that want to grab the phone to see the time and not have to turn it on, but there is a huge difference between the slight vibration from typing on a keyboard next to it vs. actually picking the thing up.
If Motorola/Lenovo is going to want people to embrace Moto Display at least make it so it isn't constantly flashing away for no reason.
Anyway are my experiences the norm? While I would love to be able to turn the motion sensor off for Moto Display my big issue is lack of persistent notification notifying without any interaction from me.

Yea, it's working "as intended". It was a poor choice really to disable the notification LED from the phone. I think it's fine on Amoled displays that can have the breathing without affecting battery life too much, but it's not the case here.
Although I generally like the high sensitivity of the Moto Display. I leave the aporoach feature disabled, and everytime I go by my phone when it's in a table or something I just push it slightly to check the notifications, it's way more convenient than to use the power button and gives more information than a RGB LED.
Thank you both, yes I did some more digging and seems like they did away with the 'breathing' feature.
I'll try that front flash app,
This whole thing just seems a little poorly thought out - disable the breathing so as not to reduce battery life, but make the user pickup the phone periodically which decreases battery life.
I get if they want to do something different than a notification LED but not everyone wants to pick up there phone every X minutes to see if they missed something.
Least I now know when it periodically turns on the Moto Display its not to remind of a current notification its just the stupid motion sensor being way to sensitive.
It is normal. In my opinion the Moto display on the new Moto are not as sensitive as older models like the Moto x pure. You were able to literally wave your hand over the screen to see notifications and time and battery level. However I still love the active display. But I also miss the notification light. But because of the active display they felt like their was no need for led notification. The Moto x4 is still a great handset with features that many people actually use like active display. I have used Samsung and Sony and lg and always had issues. Since the Moto x first came out and bought it I have never had issues with hardware or software. Sure the updates may take a lifetime however Motorola in my opinion is the bear handset for me in terms of quality. It helps tho that even with Android one or Nexus out their that Moto has almost near clean stock of Android than any other manufacturer.
I can see the argument for not needing a LED when MotoDisplay would 'breath' and periodically show the notifications, but now they have done away with that it seems like an LED would really help. That being said I am trying to adjust and get into the habit of nudging the phone when I come back to it.
