For those of you lucky enough to be on ATT and are able to customize your phone, is it worth to wait until tmo has this option? My current phone (HOX) just bricked and I'm switching over to tmo. The only color options I have however are woven white/black. So my choice is either to suck it up and get the (boring) white/black, wait a possibly long time with no phone to get the custom tmo varient, Nexus 5 or other phone.
Any opinions? I'm leaning towards just getting the white Moto X.
I'm very glad I took back my black for a custom motomaker version.

But is it worth it in my position? I'd love to have a custom one, but that means waiting until tmobile is allowed to use Moto Maker.

In addition to color choices, you also get to choose the amount of internal storage through Moto Maker. I'll wait for the 32 GB option on Verizon (rumor is November 11th). Though a month is a long time to wait without a working phone.

I'm on Att and didn't bother with it. I want the easiest resale when I decide to sell it and I only needed 16gb of storage.

Hi everyone,
I'm looking to gift a new smartphone to my wife this holiday. She is by no means an Android power-user. I'm debating between the X and the G (I snagged a discount code for the X). I know the spec rundown for both devices, but I'm not sure I can justify nearly double the cost for the X. I'm looking for input from people who may have used both devices. Which would you choose as a daily-driver for a non-techie and why?
Thanks.
I think a custom Moto X in her favorite color(s) would be awesome for her imo. And you will get LTE to boot. The Moto G doesn't have LTE to my knowledge correct?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
For a young kid a moto g but for your wife a moto x.
I don't think it's any contest on which is the far better phone. I would get the X with the discount code.
That's if she will actually use and enjoy a smartphone. If she's not going to make much use of it, of course the cheaper phone is the way to go - but she'll have a better experience on the Moto X.
My understanding, and granted, this is perhaps based on several week old information, was that the biggest difference between the X and the G was the lack of active notifications in the G. I'd say it depends on just how non techy savvy your wife is ... Personally, I'm eying the G as my mother's next phone, to ease her into a smart phone. If your wife has at least android experience, then would probably be wiser to go the route of the X.
There are a lot of differences between the X and the G. Active notifications is one. The G has no LTE, no always-on listening, no assist modes, less RAM (so it will be more prone to stuttering when lots of applications are running), and a slower CPU/GPU so it won't feel as fast.
I mean, it appears to be a tremendous phone for under $200, and a great phone for anyone looking to start out in the smartphone area, but it's definitely not just a tiny step down from the X.
It would be a close call if not for the discount code. 350 is a steal for the experience of the moto X.
I had the exact problem. I had ordered 2 Moto G's for my daughter and her husband. Then they announced the Promo Sale for the Moto X. I went with the Moto X's and I am completely happy with that decesion. I think your wife will be really impressed the Moto X's extra abilities that no other phone offers. Whatever you decide you will have a great phone.

I would say the biggest difference by far for a non-techie is the LTE on the X. That alone should decide your choice if your network supports 4g it's a no brainer

4G. Much better camera. Active notifications. At $350 it's a no-brainer.

Thanks for all the input. It turns out the G may be my only option. We are on a T-mo prepaid MVNO. The Moto Maker (and the discount) only allow purchases tied to the Big Four. (even with no contract). Has anyone successfully used the T-mo Moto Maker Moto X on a T-mo prepaid MVNO?
I remember putting my wife's old T-mo phone onto the MVNO without unlocking it, but it's a bit of a risk to purchase the X hoping to do that again. And the discount doesn't apply to the Dev edition. Thoughts?

If she's a non techie.... Honestly get the g. Then take her out to dinner or buy her another gift that you know shell like.
Most people really dont care about phones and honestly asking a bunch of xda people whar to do is probably pointless.
Moto g is plenty good and if you are on an mvno that doesn't have LTE shell barely care. Or buy her a moto g AND a nexus 7 or an iPad or something.

The perfect gift for your wife... MOTO X.... Ive got one and I love the specs.
Okay so a local Verizon authorized retailer is selling 16GB Moto X for $1 for new customers and for existing Verizon customers who are upgrade ready. I asked the guy if there were any catches, how it works with Verizon and all with future upgrades, he said there's no strings, they just upgrade through Verizon and I purchase the device from him instead of Verizon.
So... can someone tell me if this plan will NOT work?
1. Family member is eligible for upgrade, already has 2GB data plan. Go into store and upgrade to Moto X for $1 and extend Verizon contract for 2 years.
2. On Verizon account, swap family member's new Moto X and my device (Galaxy Nexus, unlimited data still).
3. Buy Developer Edition Moto X from Motorola off contract at $550
4. Active Developer Edition Moto X on my account.
5. Sell the $1 Moto X on Swappa or like
All of this so I could get a Dev Edition Moto X and keep unlimited data for only about $201 assuming I can sell the 16GB $1 Moto X for maybe $350. Family member gets upgraded from Droid X to my Galaxy Nexus. Come March of this year, move my upgrade to family member's account if they don't like my Galaxy Nexus.
I called Verizon, the rep assured me there's no difference in buying and renewing contract at retailer versus at Verizon.
It seems like a bargain... what am I missing?
If you are using a family member's upgrade to receive the Moto X for $1 through the retailer, then yes, this will work. It's exactly like doing a buddy upgrade swap directly through Verizon. It is suggested that you activate the Moto X on your family member's line first, before you swap the device over to your line though, just to make sure Verizon processes the device upgrade on their line.
Yes, on our family plan, one of the lines is eligible for a discounted upgrade. So I'd go with them to store, upgrade/active the $1 Moto X, then maybe a day later login to Verizon account, swap phones with that line so now I have the Moto X and they have my Galaxy Nexus. Then I'd buy a developer edition Moto X at full price. Once it arrives, active it on my line. Then sell the original $1 Moto X on Swappa or somewhere to recoup costs on the Developer Edition Moto X I purchased. Then, if needed, I could also give my upgrade (coming in March) to the other line I used to get the Moto X for $1 in case they aren't happy with my old Galaxy Nexus, but probably won't be an issue, they're coming from a Droid X on 3G.
So I should be safe and fair game right?
just make sure you activate the phone on the # you got the upgrade for BEFORE you put it on the unlimited plan. i just did it with verizon. used my dads upgrade, activated on his #, went to verizon and then moved it to my unlimited plan.

Make sure this retailer doesn't have "charge backs" meaning they charge your credit card the full retail price of the phone if you take it off your account. I used to work at a retailer and this was something I was in charge of doing, seeing where we lost commission.

Ooh, okay, see that's good to know. So you're saying I'd probably be safe if after upgrading I swapped, but if I sell it and it shows up on another different Verizon account, there's a chance that they would then they bill you for the phone afterwards?
Doesn't seem right, if they're selling the device for $1.... Do retailers have the ability to track MEID numbers for this? Or do they just hit up Verizon all the time to check if phones have changed accounts?
How would I find out if they have charge backs?
After some reading, it sounds like you'd only get a chargeback if the line you upgraded on is cancelled, as in you sign up with Verizon, 2 years later you're eligible for upgrade, walk into retailer, upgrade line, then close VZW account and run off with device. Which is dumb anyway cause you'd have to pay the ETF, unless I guess you're planning to sell your contract and port your number over to a different service. So if I'm just upgrading the line, swapping phones, activating a new device on my line, upgraded line is still active, and sell the $1 moto x....
I assume I'd be fine then? as long as whoever I sell the moto X to doesn't cancel their contract??? Or as long as the line that was upgraded is still "on" then it wouldn't matter?
I found a post on HowardForums, google search howard forums chargebacks and it's the first link from about 2010, can't post links yet that talks about this.
Anything else someone can think of? I'm kinda out of ideas.
Just one note: If the upgrade line that you have coming up in March is the unlimited data line, you CANNOT ever use that upgrade, including transferring it to another line, AND keep unlimited data. When you transfer the upgrade you are effectively renewing the contract and they won't do that with the grandfathered unlimited data lines.
So if your friend/family member is not happy with the Nex, you won't be able to get a new phone for them with that upgrade. That is what I've been told at Verizon and read on this forum. If someone else has different info, please post, I'd love to be wrong!

you can transfer upgrade to and from an unlimited line without loosing unlimited. you just cannot upgrade on the unlimited line.
Ooh, that's good to know, or at least something to watch out for. So come March when I'm eligible, it sounds like if I want to transfer my upgrade to the line I used to get the moto x, there's a change I'd lose unlimited data? Doesn't seem like I should, but maybe. I'd think it'd just renew my account for another 2, give them the upgrade, but... then how does that work? If line 1 just upgraded to moto x therefore renewing for another 2, what happens when I transfer my upgrade in march? can they just not use it for 2 years still? or is it a "free pass" to get two discounted devices in a row on that line?
Just make sure he doesn't do a straight cross upgrade. He needs to do a regular upgrade on the line with 2 gigs then an equipment change to put it onto your line. An alternate/cross upgrade will kill your unlimited data and Verizon will not give it back

Thanks! I plan to just do a regular upgrade with the one line that already has a 2GB/mo plan. Activate it there in the store and then leave. I'll do the swapping myself via the Verizon page where you enter the MEID numbers and junk, that way Best Buy doesn't mess anything up. That should work right?
Then simply purchase the dev edition, activate it on my account, then sell off the Best Buy moto x to recoupe costs.

I just had to call Verizon to unlock my account and happened to ask the guy about swapping phones on the website after upgrading the one line, he said not to do that because it treats swapping phones like that as somehow upgrading both? So instead the guy told me to call Verizon back after just upgrading the one line to swap devices and they'd guarantee I don't lose unlimited data. Hmm...

You will need to buy another nano Sim then. When you deactivate it then put it on your line it will burn the nanosim in the phone itself and won't be able to be used again.

Well, I did the deed. Went into the store and upgraded the other line to the moto x for $1, had the guy activate it and that was it. About an hour and a half later, I called Verizon and we spent about half hour on the phone swapping phones. Moto x is now on my line with its warranty and Gnex is transferred to the just updated line, 2GB data plan and I'm still on unlimited data. No new sims, no fuss, just a half hour conversation with a nice lady telling me about her warm fur coat while waiting for the phones to swap... Purchased my dev edition moto x already... all that's left is to activate it once it's here, then sell off the 16gb moto x as well as this old Droid X that was left behind in the process.
Best part was when they told me the device was $49.99 and the $1 sale was over and I told them well the sign says $1... they had forgotten to take down a sign at a dedicated Moto X display... win.
So far I'm loving my Developer Edition Moto X! Ordered it and it arrived 2 days later. Successfully have transferred all the phones around and still have my unlimited data plan. Now I just need to sell off the non-developer moto x as well as an old Droid X to recoup costs! Thanks for the input from everyone!
Thanks everyone for the help. I'm a few weeks in now and everything worked out great. Much appreciated! Hopefully this helps others in the same boat unless Verizon changes their policies.
Did you sell the Dev edition?

Can only find it on mobile phones direct, an online only retailer. And they're taking forever to ship it, and pretty much lied to me about their stock.
So does anyone in the UK know anywhere stocking it? This phone seems so damn hard to get a hold of
I haven't seen it on any network anywhere. I heard P4U had an exclusive on it, but since they've gone bang.....
Yea I think that's what's screwing us over here, the phone seems to be stuck in limbo.
I ended up ordering it via mobile phones direct, they've told me it would be here tomorrow everyday for a week now. Initially was meant to be here last friday. Rung up today and they've told me it is delayed for a week. Could really do with someone else selling it

I spoke with EE who is my provider and they said that they had no idea if they would get the phone because Motorola phones do not sell well (with them).
I played with the Z3 on Wednesday and REALLY liked it. It would have been better if it was close to pure android BUT given the unfortunate circumstances with the lack of availability from the Moto X, I will be purchasing the Z3 this weekend.
I think the networks are missing a trick here, some people are after a stock android experience and the size of the nexus 6 will put some off so will be wanting a device like the moto x.

I was going to hold off for the Nexus 6, but after looking around I decided I don't want a handset of that size.
The New Moto X (2014) really took my fancy and my brother bigged up the Moto X (2013) so after a lot of hunting around on the net and trying to get the New Moto X as an upgrade from my service provider with no luck as they haven't heard of it.
I found Mobile Phones Direct on the net and placed my order a few days ago. It arrived yesterday and I unlocked the bootloader (followed guide on Motorola website) straight out of the box and then once loosely set up I rooted it (followed the guides in this forum) to bring back the exposed goodness that I love.
The phone looks great and feels great in the hand, love rooted stock KitKat with exposed.

Going by model number (XT1092 Europe, Asia) its not a Pure Edition (XT1095) but according to the table at this link:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_X_(2nd_generation) its SIM Unlocked.
The bootloader was easily unlocked by following the guides in this forum and on the Motorola website (did it as part of my first boot up)
Then rooted after basic set up.

I'm hoping to get in on the Moto Maker deal on Monday (I have relatives in the US, so I'm not so worried about shipping). The question I have is, are there any concerns about hooking it up to the Bell network? From what I'm seeing, I should get the "Pure Edition" and the bands look like they'd match up, but I'm hoping someone can verify that yes this will work before I drop $450 on a new phone

I might have to have my relatives help me out on that front, but as long as I can get the deal when the site is actually up, that shouldn't be a problem.

Definitely a better plan than the Nexus 5 I was originally going to go for!
I bought a used Telus XT-1097 the other day, if not for that I was wanting the Pure edition as well as it is clearly the best model to buy. End of the day buying one locally that was like new for a fair price was just way easier then trying to get a US prepaid Visa. I didn't need to but I sim unlocked it for fun, it was less then 3 bucks for the code.
Will likely bootloader unlock and root after I've given it a really good test/workout.

You might want to wait until you get teh update before rooting and unlock boot loader.... seems I read in a few threads you have to flash back to a stock image to get the update....... unless of course your planning on flashing the XT1095 image.. but I'd research that first too...

You might want to wait until you get teh update before rooting and unlock boot loader.... seems I read in a few threads you have to flash back to a stock image to get the update....... unless of course your planning on flashing the XT1095 image.. but I'd research that first too...

Yeah, I have been waiting so far. It doesn't look too bad though. With 4.4.4 the unroot option in SuperSU should handle things just fine, then flash stock recovery back. The only two things I really want are ad blocking and to enable the green light to indicate when the phone is charging. Might also do a custom boot animation, again easy to undo.
