For those of you that have been around these parts for a while, you may remember the State of Development updates that good ol' Gsleon3 used to update us with. These came for us at a time when development for the Vivid seemed to be at a standstill, and for those of you that were here, you remember why. For those of you who don't, let me catch you up a little (and I apologize for the bad feelings that this may drum up, but I don't want anything to get out of control again). So grab a beer and a snack, this may be a long one
It was about April, and development for the Holiday was still in its infancy. There were a few good ROMs being released, and generally, it was a good place to be. Then accusations of stealing other's work, accusations of corrupt moderators, and all around child-like behavior started, and it became the downfall of the Holiday forum at XDA. ROM threads started closing. Then came the bickering. Then the Devs left. Then the users began to play the blame game, and the "let me try to whine my way to what I want" game. All the best devs left and opened up shop in their own little corners of the internet (and I can't blame them one bit), and development for the device was no longer centralized. There were/are still AWESOME ROMs available for this device, just not on XDA. This always made me a little sad. As painful of a place as XDA (or any internet forum for that matter) can be at times, there's sooooo much good information crammed into one site that it has always been my one-stop shop, but that wasn't true any longer. I settled in, I found a home, but I kept a close eye on what else was happening across the interweb's Holiday community. I liked to keep my eye on one project specifically, synergy's CM10 project, because who wouldn't want JellyBean, right?
Now, a little more information for those of you who weren't around.. The original CM10 thread was opened at another site in July, where the project started. Syn put a lot of time and effort into it, but in the end, found it to be not worth his time to continue on a project he didn't see possible to ever be finished (mainly due to the ATT in-call mic issue and video issues), and again, who can blame him? He abandoned the project at the beginning of August. This is where mg picked the project up, and continued it with a few fixes himself, before somehow we caught the attention of h8rift. h8 has been awesome - cleaning up our trees, getting things in their proper home, and powering through anything that gets in his way It's so great to have him around.
Myself, up until October, had only ever had experience with things like making boot animations, icons, editing .xmls in .apks, and some slight .smali edits. Thanks to mg's excellent guide and a crapton of Googling, I learned out how to compile/build cm from source. Then I thought, "I wonder if I could do the same for other JB flavors?" So guess what? I tried, and it worked. Every single question I had along the way (with the exception of a few Ubuntu and git specific questions), were answered by a thread here at XDA. Cool, right?
I am very excited to see new ROMage out for this device...as I'm sure anyone who was here through the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012" would agree, I was pretty sure what we had was all we were ever going to see. Which again, would have been OK, cause there are some great ROMs out there, but I've never been the kind of dude to settle in on the same ROM for too long - that's why I came to XDA in the first place. Now as I'm sure everyone can see, through collaboration, this project is making HUGE progress! I cannot thank mg and h8 enough for keeping it going. This brings me to my last point...
I encourage everyone to participate, and offer suggestions, and share information - that is, after all, what a developer's forum should be about. The wealth of knowledge that's available at XDA is out of this world, but sometimes hiding deep within the threads, filled by off-topic chatter and users who have way to huge a sense of entitlement. Please always keep in mind that the things you're getting here are free. Hours upon hours upon hours of work go into these projects, just to be shared for very little asked in return. Wait, we ask for something in return? Yes - READ, SEARCH, and SEARCH AGAIN before posting. Like I said, there's already a wealth of knowledge here that's incomparable to other Android forums on the web, but yes, sometimes it can be trying to find that information. But it's not impossible. Also - keep an eye on the issues list. There are bugs. There will probably always be bugs. And as long as there are, they will continue to be squished to the best of our ability (though h8's ability is far beyond mine, so let's especially be nice to him )
In closing - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not let this place become what it was before. So far I feel like the atmosphere around here has been a lot better, but I know how easy it can be for it to slip back to where it was. So be respectful, don't ask for ETAs, and be thankful for what we have - cause what we now have is a TON more options that we had before.
I remember the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012"... it was ugly, didn't even want to visit the site half the time. But things are looking up and I'm glad I didn't return my vivid thirty days after the release date like so many did.

Well said homeslice. Although I haven't been as active in my participation I got the Vivid on day 1 and am really happy to see development where it is today. There were many points I thought the device was basically dead and time and time again it was revived with new life. Hopefully the few left can make sure not to repeat drama mistakes of the past.
And great job on going from a reader to a developer, very well done.
Why is my xda premium app only let me reply/post on certain sections of forums and not development??:banghead:

i think is not fair to close a wip thread to bring a sense 4 rom to the vivid all i wanted to do is help this device users to be on the latest software as i said in the post that was closed i wasn't going to share it to everybody i want it to share it to developers to bring this rom to all users but it got closed for "kanging" which i think is not true since venom team never released a vivid rom even thou the did for rezound which is pretty similar device but cdma and korean's make their work on the rom also to make the radio work which no body here in xda could do after many tries all i want is to help the community and specific this device owners which expect more from this device and we know is capable of running this system and much more please let the development continue we are stuck right know on sense only because someone doesn't want to share their work on other devices which is ok if you are the developer of something and you don't want to share but why stop someone who is trying to help on a device you haven't released a rom I bet that many of the vivid users would like to flash a sense 4.1 rom on their devices

Sorry but we don't approve of the use of our work by non-team members and do not condone the porting of any of our roms to other devices for various reasons. One of those reasons is these roms will never meet the same level of quality and support our users have become accustomed to as such, these roms will never be allowed on xda and will also be refused Venom Hub access.

Btw, we're not trying to be the bad guys here... We're simply trying to protect our property. Perhaps the best way for you to achieve your objective is to reach out to the kangers to find out how they managed to port it over to your device...

That's exactly what I want but there is a language barrier, instead of releasing could you try to make it legit here with your team? Please I know there are really good developers and they can find how to make it legit is all I ask I do not want to make an issue out of trying to help others with this device, this device is capable of running this Rom flawless just like the one x or rezound which in fact is is the same device but cdma could you help us or assign this port to one of your team members?
Or if none of you has the vivid let a vivid developer take care of it please we have really good developers here to!!

This all sounds familiar...the point of this thread...
Let's just drop it. The villec2 should get its jellybean sense+ update soon, and maybe we can port it. Or maybe we can get the Koreans to share their secret. In the meantime, it appears to be elsewhere, so get it there if you must

So, the options are:
1. We remove all of our tweaks from the framework files of a kanged port of one of our roms so that you can use it as a base
2. You find a Korean translator to ask the one who got data working how he did it.
Let's not start more xda drama the vivid forum has already been thru this. Either find someone who speaks Korean to ask to translate or have them remove all of their tweaks like they ask. The vivid has come to far now to start drama over a sense 4 ROM

You don't understand the work effort in removing our tweaks from the framework so you'll need to follow up with the Koreans.
And I honestly hope we don't see any more links to this kang roms, either here or on rootzwiki.

Hey holiday community. I'm a previous desire hd owner and had the privilege of many awesome custom roms including cfx 4.1.2 and 4.2 created by synergye and team codefirex. Today I posed the question to the man himself and it looks like we may have an official cfx Rom in the near future! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003273

Xda banned him for a while and he continued developing various cyanogenmod roms for a lot of devices. Some months ago he was allowed back on Xda and has since created 2 versions of his codefireX Rom, one 4.1 version and a new 4.2 version both of which I used as a daily on my old desire hd. Imo he is one of the best (if not the best) devs on here and getting anything from him for this device is a godsend. We can only hope and wait patiently.

Yeah not exactly sure what he plans since I know how bad it was when everything exploded and people left... then came back to vivid dev starting to bloom
well i hope he actually does do something. now that we have the in call mic fixed it should be way easier to make it the it was before. does he know about the fix yet? Just don't forget we have some great ppl working on stuff for us already, it's just always better to have more ppl. It takes time to fix these things and I know these guys are doing a great job
It would be awesome to see synergye return to holiday. I'm sure if he teamed up with h8rift, home slice, and mg they could do some damage!
hi everyone I joined xda after all the wars read a lot about it. just want to say i`m so happy to see everyone getting along and hope to see all the devs back they need to be treated with respect cause they can do things people like me can`t and for that they deserve nothing but good comments . they got the brains without them we got nothing hope you return synergye the more devs the better
My galaxy nexus will continue running CyanogenMod for losing surport of OmniRom nightly build.
As CM11.0 is becoming more and more stable,I believe the nightly will coming soon.
We are gutted.
CM Nightlies arent our yet and IT IS BECOMING MORE N MORE STABLE :banghead:
What wait?
So OMNIROM no longer pledge support for Gnex?
Was looking for a 4.4 Kitkat rom from omni guess not...
No maintainer has a Galaxy Nexus. Give us a Galaxy Nexus (or find a maintainer with a Galaxy Nexus), and you'll have 4.4 nightlies.

I'm horrified at how many gnex users whine about omni not having a maintainer... Let all the whiners go to CM, good riddance. If all of you gnex users put as much energy in learning to maintain your own device as you do complaining, you'd probably have a stable release by now.

Blind development is impossible. The device won't be supported until someone from the community steps up and supports it.
There might be an existing maintainer with some spare bandwidth to support one of the gnex variants if provided a device - I personally don't have the time for it.

I personally never understood all these demands to ROM developers. It's not like we're paying them to do it and support it or anything. Must be the new entitlement generation... (Generation E, if you will).

People learning a new skill is by far the better way IMO.
By donating devices to someone, you:
1) Potentially eliminate the opportunity for someone else to do the bringup and gain skills
2) Potentially cause that developer to burn out in the long run - that is why I personally won't be taking on any additional devices for quite a while. I'm spread way too thin as it is.

u know one thing that all the developers who know how to develop the roms never help newbies...
i have personally asked how to integrate the custom kernel source to the android source code...nobody helped..

i m sick of these persons who donot share knowledge...

And I'm sick of people being lazy, so...
If developers on here took the time to help every newbie out there, they wouldn't have any time to do what they do FOR FREE. Yes, you read that right. FREE. The real devs don't ask for donations. The real devs do this on their spare time, out of sheer devotion to the device and the technology. Not because some guy in the boondocks is requesting a feature or a bug fix. They all learned the hard way and SOME do give their time... And their knowledge. They just do it in a strategic way: By documenting on knowledgebases, wikis, articles, forums, etc.
So learn to google, learn to search, learn to learn. That's the TRUE spirit of XDA right there... Not what some of the forums are becoming: Harassment from impatient users who want it all right now for nothing. No offense intended, but "newbs" are only newbs because they choose to be. All the necessary information is out there. And if it's not, and you can show a proper breadcrumb of what you've done to get there, some dev somewhere can see the effort and help out. MAYBE.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to repo sync.
BAM.

I've answered tons of questions in IRC... I've documented as much as I can why particular changes are made. However, there's a category of questions that fall into "handholding" because they're easily Googleable, or they are related to skills which can't be easily taught - they can only be learned by doing.
The problem is that every device is different, and the things you need to do in order to get one working are different for every device. If someone has a weird issue and a really esoteric log entry, then it's valid to ask if anyone has seen something similar (although you should Google first).
Learning to be a device maintainer is a long and difficult and frustrating process. Even if you're very experienced and familiar with Android, it requires immense amounts of patience and tons of time reading source code and reading through commit logs. There's no easy step-by-step recipe - it's all about developing troubleshooting and analysis skills, and those are best learned by doing.
Now there are some developers who do a poor job of documenting things - commit messages that are completely uninformative, unrelated changes made in a single commit, etc. - Most contributors to our gerrit know that such practices are a good way to get a -1 from me. (See my sig for a link to some general good practices...)
just listen....

Honestly Entropy, you're one of the developers which I love following in the forums. Your interventions are always informative, you've got a great logic and even though sometimes you can be quite prompt in your way of answering, it's always justified. I have no doubt that you've helped many people and I'm sure your approach is always a "teach a man to fish" approach. I respect you very much, as I do other developers of similar nature, and I felt you should know this. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to reading other post from you.

You haven't taken the time to read what I've written. Don't generalize and re-read what I've said and what Entropy said...
This is the last intervention I'll do on this thread, as the point is now moot.
ya i know..

u know one thing that all the developers who know how to develop the roms never help newbies...
i have personally asked how to integrate the custom kernel source to the android source code...nobody helped..
even i asked that person who created that kernel and builds rom using that kernel...so how u expect from us to maintain our own devices...
i m sick of these persons who donot share knowledge...

I'm not a dev, but I would think statements like this really discourage them.
I do have a GNex that I haven't had luck selling. Was thinking about donating to Omni devs since they don't seem to have one. However, am having second thoughts if it makes it seem like people who whine and complain get what they want because they whine and complain.
@ Devs: PM me if you are interested in me sending a Verizon GNex to you for ROM development.

Hey devs and gals... I feel like i'm new with HTC again since I've been a Samsung user for the last few years. Yet I decided to get an M8 and Sprint gave me a good deal with HKE...
So me having experience with rom and theming development for GSM Samsung phones yet I feel like a totally noob here with HTC and specially with it being CDMA network...
I did a lot of roms porting back in the day for Samsung phones too.. Again I would like to ask devs if they won't mind add me to their team or individual dev to help me out on refreshing my mind about how things work for HTC and CDMA network so I/we can start rom development.
101 views and no answer? Are y'all not interested?
Sorry I'm not a dev but thanks for offering your help

I do this for fun.. However when I used to be a Samsung user devs seems more friendly, we were like a big forum family lol.
We would help each other out.. It was not like who did it first or to each its own.
Maybe that is why this forum is like dead pretty much. There is no lots of devs an they dont seem to care or help anyone else.
If this was like on Samsung forum we would have a SENSE/LP rom up and running a long time ago.
I'm personally trying to get it to work for me. But being new to CDMA I have no idea how it works. But will get there eventually.
What exactly are you trying to figure out? You seemed a bit general in the post [emoji14]

All the devs that I'm in regular communication with are open to helping, but not giving hand outs, I was accepted by TensaiLabs based on what I was trying to do and the very specific questions that I asked. That being said I haven't dove into porting too much so I'm not much help but from what I know and what little help I was with the sense 6 port for the LTE you have to edit build.prop, change libs, and add in sprint files and boot.img
Lets start a counter in this forum and let devs know about popularity of this device so we can get good AOSP rom etc as fast as possible!

Really pointless thread. If you've followed any of the other AOSP request threads, you'll know that it's a very complicated and involved task. Amassing "+1" posts isn't going to motivate anyone more to take on such a task.
On a more personal note, I don't know why someone would buy a device like the Note 8 just to strip it of all of its features. Personally, I bought my device because of all the features Samsung has put on it. I wouldn't put AOSP on this, likely even if someone paid me, because it would defeat the purpose of having this device in the first place.

If you think that way you shouldn't be on XDA then, development is main thing we discuss here. Giving support to Dev in any way concerned will help them!

We all have different opinions and preferences, so I think we all belong here. Of course support for devs is always welcome, but a +1 thread may not be the most effective way to go about getting what you want...They can already see the view count on aosp-related threads after all. Maybe try reaching out directly instead.

Well, devs, I think, try to develop roms to attain a better experience, adding some features, taking out some not very popular ones, in general to make the overall performance better, as Max Terrible here stated, buying a note series device to strip it down of ALL the features that make it what it is, in my opinion, is pointless, to that effect, you should get a pixel device, clean pure android out of the box

Do explain to me how having a thread full of people posting +1 to try and convince a dev to make an AOSP ROM, is considered supporting the dev?
I definitely support the devs and the great work they do on here, but recruiting a mob to basically create a petition for someone to do something you want, is not what I define as support.
I assure you, any and all devs working on the Note 8 are aware of the very, very small group of people that want an AOSP ROM.

There would be lot of people who dont upgrade mobile regularly (may be 6 months) some upgrade after 2 years. And u might be knowing samsung way of updates so aosp rom etc is very help to have a taste of latest updates. I know only note special things wont be working but many extra things u will get in these roms. Till now we are not able to use gcams! This shows development for this rom. Intent of this thread was to see popularity of this device and let dev see the demand:laugh:
Thanks for +1 people! Lets go guys!!
