Did you buy Asurion with your Moto X? - Moto X Q&A

The VZW rep told me that Moto partnered with Moto to guarantee that if you purchase Asurion, that you'll receive an exact replacement for your customized Moto X should it ever need replacing. What's more, they'll overnight you a temporary phone until yours can be built.
This is the only time i've seriously considered Asurion for any of my devices. Did you?

this is more of a discussion thread fyi. but just because no one has replied, ill share my thoughts. I always use asurion mainly because of how easy it is. You can do everything through a verizon store (for me) and it makes it just too easy to go else where. I walk in, say my phone sucks, they say ok without doing much of any kind of checks because they don't care, then if it is manufacturer warranty they ship me a new one within two days (im not motomaker customer) and thats it. I am never without a phone. I never have to deal with a rep on the phone. They never ask any questions really at the store because the reps know its just going to get sent back to moto for manufacturer warranty. If i screw the phone up some how, you just let someone steal that thing and get a new one for 100$ within two days. Just never had a problem or difficulty with them so it makes using them worth it.
when i use the word new i mean replacement fyi. Since im not a motomaker customer they don't have to build a new one for me so i just get replacements, which i have never had an issue with either.

FWIW - my wife tried to replace her DROID4 with Asurion and because the phone is "no longer manufactured", they tried to give her an LG Enact. For $99. Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled with the experience.

i have friends that have been in the same situation but when they called back in they gave them the option of different kinds of phones. they were always happy with the phone that they could get. sometimes they would just get the newest version of the phone that had been released.

I used to have it on the past devices, but dropped it on this upgrade. $10/mo for 24 months =240 + $149 deductible (as quoted by vzw) ends up being $389. Let's be honest, the moto x will be last years model in less than a year and available on Swappa.com for $200-250 on the off chance I break my phone (which I have yet to brake one). It didn't feel right paying for nothing like that. Their replacements are refurbs also, I had a friend that went through four swaps before getting one that worked.

Yup, 2 year warranty through Motorola is $85 for 2 years with a $40 deductible per incident. :good:

I dropped Asurion due to the confusion regarding the covering of the MotoX. I went with SquareTrade--except, I don't think they explicitly cover the MotoMaker ones. I registered it under a black MotoX.

I agree on the Motorola extended service plan. Great price and much better deal than Asurion.

Literally weeks ago. Ended up replacing her device with a new device/upgrade.

Hello ASMT,
I was curious, with my MotoMaker Moto X, if I ever need to use my Asurion policy for my phone, will I be able to get a replacement that is customized as well? With Verizon blocking our ability to get MotoCare, I was very concerned I'd be left with a generic Moto X if I ever have to go through you for insurance.

Don't bother. Just use the motorola insurance. It's much cheaper and you can be assured that you'll not lose the customization.

Beware AT&T Insurance on Nexus 5

So like most in this forum, I bought my Nexus 5 directly from the Google Play Store. I chose AT&T as my carrier. When I signed up for the account at the AT&T store, I got the phone insurance to cover me when I inevitably crack the screen or my 3 year old drops the phone into the bath tub. I asked them when I activated the phone if the AT&T insurance covered the phone for replacement even though I did not buy it from them. "Of course!" the salesperson said. Bought the phone at the end of October.
Sure enough, last night my buddy bumped the phone out of my hand, and it dropped about 4 feet to a stone floor face first. Cracked!!! It pained me to see my new phone with a full screen length crack, but I breathed a small sigh of relief knowing I had bought the insurance for just this circumstance. I called AT&T this morning to ask about the claim process and the customer service guy told me he was not sure it was covered because, "The Nexus 5 is not a phone we carry." He advised me to call Asurion Mobile, the AT&T insurance carrier and ask them. When I called Asurion, they confirmed what the AT&T guy said. AT&T does not carry the Nexus 5 and therefore cannot replace one as part of a claim. Instead they said that they would replace the phone with "an equivalent".
I know others probably like those other carriers, but AT&T in Baltimore really does offer way better coverage than those others, even Verizon. Because of this, I would like to stay with AT&T.
I did not talk with Asurion any further, but this presents those of us who bought the phone unlocked and out of contract precisely to avoid the carrier capture relationship with a conundrum on AT&T. The insurance will cover you having a phone on AT&T, just not the one that we all really want. Interestingly T-Mobile and Sprint DO carry the Nexus 5. Am curious if anyone on those carriers has made an insurance claim and they gave you another Nexus 5? And further, if they did, was it unlocked or locked?
Reading another forum, I noted that my credit card my offer purchase protection given that I am (barely) still inside of 90 days. Will be investigating that possibility next.
Phone insurance is really a scam for such a low priced phone as the N5. Self insure and save the $$$

The $150 deductible for Asurion is ridiculous anyway. We just bought a pair of Nexus 5's from T-Mobile, but are holding off on insurance for now. I see Square Trade has insurance for $8 a month, with a $75 deductible -- my wife is a bit careless with the drops, so I was considering them for her phone.
Curious as to what they consider an equivalent. Possibly they replace the phone then you sell it to buy yourself another N5.

does any company do this? i dont get why the OP thought this would work. i get it that the customer service guy gave him the wrong information, but why did the OP expect this enough to even ask them in the first place?
@charmcitybryan - since ATT doesn't carry the Nexus 5, it makes sense that they can't replace your phone with the same one. You could do what @sprof suggested - and get the replacement they offer, and sell it and buy a N5 then.
Depending on when you bought your phone, and whether you used a credit card with accident protection, you may be covered by your credit card (check with your credit card if you used a credit card for the purchase)
If a carrier did somehow replace the N5, it will be unlocked (even if they somehow figured out a way to lock it - which they won't, unlocking it is as easy as flashing the stock image from Google).

Well...that $8 a month might not sound like a month, but consider this...
Let's say she has the phone for a year. Month 12, she breaks it. Boom, in theory you pay $75 and you get a new phone. You can't ignore the $96 you've also already paid. And then you have the situation of having the insurance, but for some reason they don't decide to honor the claim. (let's ignore that for the sake of argument though)
Even if you break it on month 1, you're paying $83.
Assuming you have the 32G version...does the ratio of that $83 vs. the replacement cost of the phone REALLY make mathematical sense to you factoring in the odds of her breaking the phone?
It almost never does. Just saying!
Also...here's the best part....Take the price of this phone, and compare it to the price of other comparable phones. It's seriously about half as much as them, if you are considering the TRUE cost, ie: no contract price.
Take that extra $350 or so and save it. If you get your phone stolen or you throw it at someone in a fit of drunken rage...you can buy a new phone.
If that doesn't happen...You still have that $350!
Went from a Note 3 returned it to buy Nexus 5, cancelled my insurance because I knew AT&T would not carry it. Call Google get an RMA they should be able to replace it since we have a 1yr warranty.

I'm shocked they even offered to replace it with an equal valued device. Not to sound hard to the op but I figured it would go without saying that a device not sold by Att wouldn't be covered through their insurance. Take the replacement and sell it for another n5.

I'm just curious what equal value phone the OP will get. Nothing is really equal when it comes to specs with that price. Moto x costs more but lower in specs. I just hope that OP will get something that's equal in specs not in costs.

i always have had insurance on all my phones.. im with sprint.. i ended up sellimg my gs4.. and got the N5 from the play store.. when i tried to get insurance on my N5 they said i cant bec ause i got my N5 from the play store.. sprint dont carry the 32 gig.. so now i have no insurence which sux.. but it is what it is

This is exactly why I love these forums! Great idea on getting the replacement and then selling to get another N5. Will definitely now start a claim to see what equivalent phone they will provide. Like another post said, I hope they provide equivalent specs, not equivalent cost given what a great value our phone is.
On the posts questioning why I thought AT&T would replace the phone in the first place, it's a fair question. I honestly have never used phone insurance before. My first mistake was believing the salesperson. Bummer, but that's life. I knew at the time that AT&T did not carry the phone, but was guessing the business model of the insurance would be as fine with providing cash so I could just get a replacement as they would providing a replacement phone. Always read the fine print and all that I guess. Another good option is just sending the phone in to LG for a screen replacement. I have read in other threads that may actually cost less than the deductible to replace the whole thing.
On the economics of cell phone insurance vs. self insuring given the cost, I found this article on Lifehacker that does a nice summary of the plans that are out there. Do a quick google search for it.
I think the argument that the high cost does not justify the benefit is particularly interesting now that many of us have the phone out of 2 year contracts and paid a low price for a great product. Aren't we all likely to jump at the next Nexus that comes out in a year? If so, as time approaches the next release, the value of replacing the phone we have goes down significantly.
In fact, given this, it would seem only to make sense to get phone insurance (if one wanted it) that provides a cash payout of the purchase price of the phone. Because the price of our phone is less, the premium would be lower and possibly a better cost benefit equation.
Equivalent phone to me would be a 5", snapdragon 800, 1080p display, lte and unlocked.

shattered my screen after having the black/black leather Moto X 2nd gen., having serious issues with Motorola, AT&T and Asurion so wondering (as a backup plan) are there any reputable companies that could repair the screen? for a reasonable price...

for the OG Moto X, motorola was giving you a free screen replacement one time only. So is that not the case with the 2nd generation Moto X?
What is going on with Asurion? Are they unwilling to replace the leather? If so, post on social media, particularly the ATT Android Central forum complaining about Asurion's policy. Put Asurion in the title and a the Asurion Social Media rep will see it and post to you. They are good about making good if you complain publicly on social media.

yes, Asurion wanted to give me a white resin back in exchange for a black/black leather back, crazy stuff. i mentioned them on Twitter and G+, no response. meanwhile Motorola will exchange like for like, plus cheaper than via AT&T or Asurion so i should be good.

meanwhile it was taken care of... after i called Asurion out via Twitter and advised i was going to involve BBB, it's pretty sad i pay for insurance and have to jump through so many hoops. and deal with reps like this one http://pastebin.com/XxW3G0YY
overall it's been #replacementHELL and i finally got a replacement today, actually around the time i initially dropped the device, a week ago thursday (7 days of downtime)
had to go to at&t to resolve my phone being activated with my wife's phone number, phone has been getting pretty hot, even the at&t guy said "yes, that is unusually hot", scared to exchange it, 1. don't feel like going thru this ordeal again and 2. i received a new device in retail box which i really like!
so we'll see...

I have been using Square Trade for 3-4 years and have been very happy. Always cheaper and copay is less than what carriers offer. Only downside is you have to send them the phone for repair. They promise 24 hour turnaround or resolution. Meaning , with shipping it usually takes 5-7 days to get phone back, so you have to have an old phone to activate in the interim.
First time I used it was on my wife's week old Evo 3D she dropped and cracked the screen. The phone had just been released, so they couldn't get the repair parts needed and dropped the full off contract price of the phone (if I remember it was either $599 or $699) into my Paypal account the day after calling to tell me they couldn't fix it. They are easy to deal with and highly rated by Consumer Reports. I will have it on my Nexus 6 the day I get it. They will also refund the unused portion of my current warranty that I have on my Nexus 5.

About how much does it cost to insure a phone through them?
I usually use the extended care plan from the manufacturer when available. I have AppleCare+ on my iPhone 6 (and all my iPhones prior), and Moto Care on my Moto X, and on my soon to be delivered 2014 Moto X as well. Since Motorola is making the Nexus, they might offer their Moto Care plan for it and if they do, I'd recommend that in a heartbeat. For the Moto X it was $85 up front and $35 deductible, and they do advanced replacements. I'm about to pay the $35 and replace my 2013 Moto X just to keep one that's brand new in the museum. For $35 why not?
Buy it with a credit card. Free cash back, one extra year of insurance, and price protection if it drops the price within 3 months.
I'm prob going with squaretrade unless google or moto has insurance for it

Price is $99.00 for two years coverage. Includes accidental breakage, water damage, about anything except lost or stolen. It is subject to a $75 deductible.

How does SquareTrade stack up to Motorola's Protection Plan? At Motorola's site, the Moto X 2 year coverage is $85 with a $39 deductible.

Google only has the automatic one year warranty against defects that comes when you buy the device from them, which is great BTW. They don't offer any sort of supplemental insurance for accidental damage. You'd have to go through a company like Square Trade for something like that. Or Motorola, if they allow you to insure devices that weren't directly purchased from their website.

As of now, Motorola will only insure a Nexus 6 purchased through Motorola.
Anybody know how many times square trade will fix or replace a device during those 2 years?
Is square trade cheaper? I'm going to go with Motorola because they do advanced rma.

It is the very definition of insanity to sit on a computer and hit refresh hoping for a chance to have the privilege of sending a corporation large chunks of money. Google has been doing some type of social experiment just to see how insane people actually are. I fell prey to this insanity and wasted literally hours attempting to give them my money. Not again. If they begin normal sales I may purchase one but then again I am thinking no corporation who does this sort of thing actually deserves my money. I may look elsewhere. I pulled out an old Note 1 and realized what a great device it was so the Note 4 is looking more attractive to me, even though I like/liked the original concept of Nexus and have purchased every Nexus device that came out. But if I do get one it will be direct from Motorola.
That'll teach 'em. Google still gets your money.

It is not about "teaching" anyone. It is about putting up with bulls***.
It's up to you, really. The warranty is exactly the same (It's Motorola's warranty in both cases). Google, historically, has been better about replacing defective/damaged units, but Moto has Moto Care, which is one of the cheapest accidental damage warranties out there. At this time, it doesn't look like you can buy Moto Care for a Play Store model, but that may change (and you can always get the slightly more expensive one from Fair Trade). Also, Moto's site is infinitely easier to order from right now, and they offer a payment plan, unlike Google. On the flip side, Moto charges you immediately, whereas Google only places a hold on your credit card, and doesn't actually charge you until the unit ships. Speaking of shipping, Moto ships via FedEx ground only, whereas Google offers UPS Ground, 2nd Day, and Next Day shipping options.
Pros and Cons either way. I chose Google, because of my past experiences with their replacement policies, but many people swear by Moto, so I think you'll be happy either way.

That's also been refuted several times by Moto reps, including specific pricing ($85 for 2 years). At this point, it's really a guessing game, since no REAL information will come out until the Nexus 6 is actually launched. With Moto, if you didn't/can't order the extended coverage at purchase time, you can call with the device information once you receive it. We'll know for sure once people receive their devices and attempt to add coverage.

Also just found this, sorry if re post, make sure and read the entire feed. At first glance it gives you the impression that moto care will not be offered, then it goes on to say it is not offered right now, but will be.

From my personal experience I would order from the Google Play Store. Their customer support is amazing (surprisingly) and they gave me a replacement Nexus 5 at no charge because I had set a dumbell on my screen and it smeared everywhere. It was rooted/ unlocked and they could've cared less.
I've been lurking on the n6 forum because I want one but they are hard to comeby at the moment, and I am waiting to see what ATT does with theirs, if they will have ATT bloatware and so on.

Thanks for the advice, as far as I know all models from the carriers shouldn't have bloat ware, not 100% sure.
Isn't it cheaper to order through Motorola? Free shipping and people are reporting the tax is cheaper too.

I have had good luck with Squaretrade in the past. They are a lot cheaper than Verizon insurance and provide the same coverage for accidental damage.

I'd go with SquareTrade you have two options to pay monthly or yearly at least that's how it was 2 years ago. With SquareTrade though you pay either a $50 or $100 deposit and take it to a local repair place and no matter the cost squaretrade will cover it.
The only thing I don't know is if they cover lost or stolen devices but come on its 2015 if you lose your phone your better off with a straight talk phone

asurion insurance replaces the phone with a Brand New Phone. Not sure how much it costs, i believe $9 a month. But you have to pay a deductible of $100.

I had 2 claims in the past with Asurion, in both cases I received a "refurb" phone......

No they do not. I have had 6 claims over the last 13 years with Verizon and ALL were refurbs. It says this clearly on the website and your Iinsurance documentation.

You sure they aren't refurb? You know it doesn't say anything on the box right? Maybe it if was a new release they didn't have any refurbished but I've never gotten a new phone nor have I ever seen anyone. Your lucky
I have had two claims with Asurion...I believe both were refurbs but they looked and functioned as good as new...you basically couldn't tell the difference. But they do not cost any more than the other guys out there and they do provide for lost or STOLEN phones whereas I do not thin the others do at all. Your choice. But for what these new phones cost, and the fact that I cannot live without it for even a day...insurance is a must for me!
The way Asurion works is that, if available, you get a Certifiled Like New replacement. If there's none currently available, they will replace it with a new device instead (for example at the very beginning of a phone release, it's not like the mfr makes a batch of refurb phones for insurance company replacements). In the event that there are neither available, then you get additional options. A limited list of comparable replacement devices, basically. Or, there may be case by case instances where you'll get an upgrade for reduced or no cost. Obviously a lot less common, and we did have people all the time would get a phone, decide they didn't like it, and try to push for a different device under replacement. Unless you have repeated troubles with the same device in a short time, they generally aren't going to switch a model out.
+1 on squaretrade...I also have them for large appliances and they've been awesome!
So no one has used Worth Ave. Group? I'll look into squaretrade but the last time I had insurance, I ended up using it. I had a pristine condition Droid that developed an issue with the screen and I filed my claim. I went through (4) 'certified' refurbs for one failure after another and ended up switching to iPhone after it was all said and done. My first phone was great, the rest were a constant problem. I've read up and down votes for Worth Ave but not in an environment like here so who knows what they're worth. But primarily I like the idea of avoiding dealing with any more refurbished devices.
And I know, your mileage may vary... My experiences could be unique to the model I was using but from what I do remember, it was an infuriating process. I definitely appreciate all the opinions thus far!
I have Verizon's Asurion and they not only sent me a brand new phone, it was the newer version (Moto X to Moto X 2014) I will be sticking with them for my S6 Edge purchase this weekend...
have Asurion and just spent $200 cause of a cracked screen and that will be the end of that although i did get a new unit but only because it was so new anyway.
for $129 one time payment and up to 3 uses in 2 years coverage you can get Sammy's Protection with a $95 deductible versus Asurions $200 so i am cancelling Asurion and going with that one.
