MotoMaker Phones and Asurion? - Moto X Q&A

Im not sure if this is the right place to this topic, if not please move it to right one please.
So now that all 4 major carriers got acces to Moto Maker and a lot of us are getting phones on that way i would like to know how Asurion be handling the replacements, are we getting same colors or not? If yes that means that we could get a brand new phone?, please shere here what you know about it

I think your best bet would be to email asurion themselves.

I know for a fact that Sprint Moto X devices purchased through Moto Maker are not covered by TEP"Assurion". They sent out a bulletin on it at work.
Assurion states that it would cost to much to match customization of moto maker devices and without changing there coverage agreements to replace with standard devices it was easier to choose not to cover the devices.
Imprinted directly to your mind via a Moto X

Call Motorola, for $85 you can purchase extended warranty and it covers accidental damage but not loss or theft. It's a $35 deductible.

I'm not sure this is an option for Verizon. I've heard Verizon won't allow it? If anyone can link to where you add Moto's coverage to your phone it would be much appreciated.

Ill be calling VZW tomorrow and try to find out, keep you updated

Don't call Verizon call Motorola, they are the one you get it from. Register your device on their website.
Yes I have a Moto Maker T Mobile Varian. Because their website hasn't updated my tracking information as sent or delivered the option isn't appearing for me in their online website but I have been assured in several calls with Motorola that it should be available for me to purchase. I got a follow up call from a different department calling from a Texas number and they have escalated my request to another department. They have to have the web master fix said issue with their website.
AFAIK, this warranty extends your one year of coverage to two years and includes accidental damage coverage. If you plan to unlock your bootloader it's voided upon requesting the unlock code.

I upgrade by Verizon they charge me for the phone, Verizon just gave me the pin that need to be loaded on my check out that why im guessing Verizon shoud take care of my phone or asurion even a did not get an warranty offer from Motorola at any point of my customization only offer for accesories, will see if asurion or big red dot cover me maybe ill be returning the phone

Can type a little better now that I don't have a cat on my lap...
I've heard from a couple different people that Motorola is saying Verizon will not let them sell their insurance on a Moto X. I've had two reps tell me it *should* be possible but no one can give me a link to where I sign up. To be honest I think these reps are mis-informed and it is not possible.
In a chat with Verizon a couple of days ago, they tell me it's possible to add Asurion to a MotoMaker Moto X as long as it is done within 30 days of purchase. I have zero idea how a repair/replacement might be handled on a customized device.

I got all my devices with insurance with warranty extended and when i upgrade i did not change nothing but i can not confirm how my plan going to be because i dont have the phone with me yet, so i should have insurance but not sure how going to work i hope if i need to replace (knock on the wood) ill get the same color

FYI Moto has an agreement with Asurion to guarantee that you will get an exact replacement of your device if you have coverage. They will overnight you a Moto X while yours is being built, so that you can have a phone while you wait.

How do I replace my lost, accidentally damaged or stolen Moto X if I have equipment protection?
If your Moto X is lost, stolen or accidentally damaged (including liquid and physical damage), and you’re enrolled in Total Mobile Protection, Total Equipment Coverage or Asurion Wireless Phone Protection, file your insurance claim directly with Asurion:
If your equipment is lost or stolen, suspend your service in My Verizon.
Note: You can also dial (800) 922-0204 (from any phone) and complete this task with our Interactive Voice Response (IVR) to suspend your phone.
File an insurance claim in one of the following ways:
Online through Asurion's website
Call Asurion Customer Care at (888) 881-2622

Great question juancaperez2000!
We do cover the Moto X™ for most major carriers. Like most stores, we will carry the black and white versions of the phone. If you have a customized design, simply give us a call when filing your claim to discuss your options. You can find the policy terms and conditions for each of the carriers we cover here: www.phoneclaim.com. Thanks for the great question! We are here to help if you need us.

OK, so I have filed a claim with my Verizon MotoX, which was customized through Motomaker. The phoneclaim.com website offers that I can accept a black or white version, or I can wait 3-7 days while mine is on backorder. It's been 5 days, I've called Asurion, trying to verify that I was doing it right but I can only get their automated system to say it's on backorder. Am I doing it wrong?

What are the options if you have a 32GB Developer Edition phone? These have woven white backs with white fronts and silver accents. They have unlockable bootloaders and the warranty remains if you unlock the bootloader.

Legal unlocking and the shebang.

Before one buys a used atrix hd off the bay, how does he make sure the imei had not been blacklisted by at&t? Especially if he lives overseas and has no way of trying out an at&t sim for a few weeks before he visits the US?
I understand atrix hd is also offered on contract. So what is stopping from someone taking it on the contract for cheap and buy a code from ebay and unlock the phone. Missed payments could make at&t blacklist the phone right?
I guess one way to avoid buying a stolen phone is to insist on the box with the sale, but how does one protect oneself about the above possibility?
AT&T employee here. Phones being blacklisted due to missed payments is usually only a CDMA thing, and AT&T just blacklist if reported stolen. Blacklisting is becoming more and more of an issue, so it is something to keep in mind when buying used from individuals. I would recommend getting them to provide you with the IMEI then call AT&T customer service 1-800-331-0500 to check it to see if it's clear.

Try and buy from a good seller also. Look for "good imei" or something like that. As long as it is listed as good, eBay will protect you investment, aka refund you if you get the shaft lol

yes that is correct ESN is just for cdma phones but swappa check's IMEI as well just thought id throw that lil bit of info out there if anyone was interested.
when ever i have sold a phone on swappa the first thing i have to do is give swappa the IMEI so they can confirm if it is good.

Unfortunately though, I live overseas, and I wouldn't be able to check if it works on AT&T until I try their sim in a month or two! Hence the pickle.
Swappa recognized the IMEI as the correct device but could not validate the status. Is CheckMEND a reliable solution?

Another quick clarification on the statement above. So, what happens to GSM phones that are bought on contract at a subsidized price and unlocked via one of the many third party sites online (if it is possible to illegally unlock phones on contract that is)? AT&T does nothing about it and just bears the loss?

if you unlock a gsm phone 90% of the time you can use them with any carrier ,i believe and correct me if im wrong. if you report a phone lost or stolen thats when there is a problem.i have a tmobile phone right now which is working with at&t.so as long as its a gsm phone and you can unlock
it then your good to go.i just bought a s3 off swappa then unlocked with cellunlocker.net for 25 and just popped my sim in and i was good to go.
hope this helps.
I don't get that business model. What is stopping people then from buying phones on contract for $50 and using them on another carrier after unlocking it for $25? Or is the contract obligations so binding in US that people don't ever break their contracts? How does it work there?

well to be honest it has to do with credit and your credit line,if you buy a phone with a contract and you break and or dont pay your bill then it will go to collections and that in turn affects your credit as far as getting credit cards or anything for that matter that involves anything having to do with credit,of course some people just dont care but for the majority it is better for them to pay the bill or to pay to get out of the contract as in an early termination fee. hope this helps

Oh okay. So the only worry is if people buy the phones and claim that it had been lost (and the insurance) but sell them off internationally. This way the phone will work everywhere except in US where it will blacklisted.
But then, will insurance and/or the police insist on seeing the box? If so, insisting on getting the phone with the box would technically make sure that the phone is not stolen and/or blacklisted right?

im afraid things work differently over here, not the police or the company really have time or care about a phone.insurance is just that ,if you have it then they will give you another and register the phones imei as bad and will be flagged as bad and will not work with the company you buy it from but if it is a gsm phone more than likely it will work unlocked with other companies ,now having said that if you want a phone that will work with at&t or any other carrier that are gsm then may plz recommend this website, swappa.com i have purchased several phones from them and never had a problem i would recommend buying at&t phone or a tmobile phone and if it is not unlocked then you can unlock the phone at cellunlocker.net which i have used as well and can verify that they give good unlock codes ,within 5 to 10 min, also swappa only deals with paypal so if the phones imei no. for some reason is not right even though they check it before hand and or the phone is not in the condition they said it was you are protected under there buyer protection program which means if need be they can refund your money.
Thanks. I had already been through Swappa. Unfortunately, it seems like most of the sellers do not ship internationally.

The way it works with AT&T here is that you may get a $500 phone for $100 with a two year contract, but a stipulation of the contract is a $350 declining early contract termination fee. That way they're covered if you do decide to take it elsewhere. If a phone is blacklisted, it will fry your sim card almost immediately when you try to use it in that phone. Keep in mind, I'm an employee but not speaking on behalf of the company, just trying to be helpful and shed some light on things.

[Q] Friends&Family Promotion, Free Phone, not free from troubles

A friend of mine works at Motorola. So I was invited to participate their Friends&Family Moto X maker beta promotion. I just designed my phone. Indeed the phone/device is free after receiving $200 from Motorola. But the website forced me to pay $380 for AT&T deposit fee, while I clearly clicked "existing AT&T customer". Why the charge? How to remove that? Also, does anybody know if I just simply use AT&T prepaid card once I get the phone? I'd like to keep my current sim-card in my N4.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Did you actually pay the $380 deposit before asking either Motorola or at&t just wtf was going on? Might have to do with the fact you're on prepaid...
Your sim card will work fine, but you'll have to trim it first. The Moto X uses a nano SIM from what I understand.

Sorry for the late reply guys. And thank you for your input.
The program was introduced by this friend of mine who works at Motorola. When I signed up the program, I had to list his name as my sponsor and promise not to send the link to the public.
I do like some features that come with this phone, my name is on the phone, touchless control. But I honestly think it does not worth $380 AT&T deposit fee.

i literally just got back from the ATT store, they wouldn't sell it to me without an ATT account
The regular price is showing $579.99 on AT&T's web site. That is way too much for the phone considering the Nexus 4 is $350 and can be used on T-mobile without any contracts. If you really want this phone then I would say walk into a AT&T store and see what they can do. Even though you don't have a SSN there may be special exemptions for students.

Look at the review samples or even the "photos" thread here in the X general forum.
You can sign the contracts without SSN, all you need to do is pay a $500 security deposit, they will return it to you within a year if you pay your monthly fee on time.

i bought mine sort of off-contract. but, instead a month-to-month "contract". pretty sure it would be pointless to buy this phone outright from AT&T. it's entirely locked down to AT&T. until someone proves otherwise, i'm unsure this "GSM" phone will work off their network.

Not sure if you can get it without a contract, but I paid full price (I and under contract for another year and not yet eligible for an upgrade). I paid full retail, which in the store rang up as $540. Not sure why, since the web site shows $579.00, but I won't complain about saving $40.
BTW - the store I went to said they wont stock 32GB versions in store, they will need to be ordered online. I bought a black 16GB Moto X.
So if I walked into an AT&T store and buy their Moto X full price, will they let me unlock it to use it on T Mobile?

What will happen to current Asurion insurance?

I currently have Asurion insurance through Verizon for my Iphone 6 plus. What happens to the insurance once I put my nano sim from my Iphone 6 Plus to my Nexus 6? Will Verizon automatically remove the insurance, or will I have to call and cancel the insurance?
I currently have Ausrion on verizon also. Everytime I changed devices, the insurance just switched over by itself to the new device. I am hoping the same thing will happen with the Nexus 6. I would leave it on there for a month or two, by then Verizon will release the device, and you will be able to make a claim if needed, because Verizon will be carrying the device.

same here, insurance has always followed me no matter what phone I was using. I'm hoping I can keep asurion because they cover everything including lost or stolen.
The insurance will carry over to whatever phone you switch too. The only problem with the Nexus 6 is if you bought it from Motorola and put your sim in and it does not show up when you check your account, they may not replace it.

I currently have Asurion insurance through Verizon for my Iphone 6 plus. What happens to the insurance once I put my nano sim from my Iphone 6 Plus to my Nexus 6? Will Verizon automatically remove the insurance, or will I have to call and cancel the insurance?

Hi 2swizzle,
Typically, the coverage covers the line. In the event that you experience a covered loss and file a claim, the phone would be replaced with a device similar to the one that is currently active on the account. Please let us know if you have any other questions, we'd be happy to help! Thanks!

It's our goal to get you reconnected as quickly as possible! While we strive to replace with like make and model, if that device is unavailable at the time that the claim is filed we may offer to send a comparable model.

OK, but if I bought from google and I am a Verizon customer (who doesn't sell it yet) what are the chances you will have one?

If the device was purchased from a 3rd party we recommend contacting Verizon to see if your device is eligible for coverage.

Already did that.....can you guess what their answer was? Contact Asurion
And did you not notice that this discussion was about a phone for Verizon that Verizon does not sell?

hold on i thought the line was covered not the actually phone... verizon will allow us to use the nexus 6 on verizon but they dont sell the nexus 6 as of date. with that said its no reason for asurion not to have a nexus 6 because At&t, sprint, and tmobile all sell the nexus 6 in stores and theres only one model of the nexus 6, meaning any nexus 6(us version) will work on any network.
at&t does lock the sim slot for any nexus 6 they sell, but will unlock it as long as you fulfill your contractual agreement or buy the phone at retail cost.
While coverage does follow the line, you may want to check with Verizon just to insure that the correct type of Total Equipment Protection is active on your account. If the phone is authorized & supported on the Verizon network and you have insurance coverage, then we'd be happy to review your claim and help you get up and running again! In terms of inventory, similar to retail our inventory is constantly changing and varies per carrier. If the device is unavailable we may send a comparable model; we'd also be happy to look into your claim to see if there are any available options to get you back into your original device.

And what would be comparable to a Nexus 6? Comparable to me means the same specs, which no ther Verizon phone currently has and the fact that it is a Google nexus device.

If there is not a comparable model available, we will work with you to get a like-for-like replacement.

Verizon Asurion Insurance, are we still covered??

For those using a Nexus 6 on Verizon and previously had Asurion Insurance, now what? Do we have to cancel the insurance, will Verizon automatically cancel the insurance, or will they continue charging us for insurance per month, even though the phone is showing up as Non Verizon Device? If they keep charging us monthly, does that mean our phones will qualify for Asurion insurance?
My billing cycled and they are still charging me for insurance
I went to a Verizon store today and was told that my insurance from my S5 transferred over. I cut the sim from my S5 and popped it in my nexus 6.
I wouldn't count on it since it shows up as non Verizon device on your account

I've contacted Asurion and Verizon and no one has a freaking clue..... So they both agreed my account will continue to be billed for Asurion insurance, after that point they have no clue what will happen. Asurion is saying they will cover the phone and replace it with a comparable phone, and Verizon is saying I'm not the nexus 6 will not be covered under insurance, but my line still has insurance... WTF My advice to everyone, get moto care
At best if they do cover, comparable at this point would be a locked down note 4 or if Verizon does ever start carrying the nexus 6 then you'd get a Verizon branded one with whatever changes/badging that comes with it.
Worst case its not covered period you've been wasting $10 a month for nothing

Replacements come from the manufacturer, not the carrier. Getting a replacement is going to be tough from any insurer at this point until decent stock is established.

This is a picture of my at&t account. Looks exactly like it did when i bought my nexus 5 on google play. Unlike my two note 3's on the account that show the note 3. So Yes and No at the same time. I would think Assurion shouldn't be a problem, but at the same time it bothers me AT&T doesn't recognize its own device? You'd think after branding it with labels and bloatyware (very little) that it would be recognized on their site.
I just spoke with Verizon to confirm that my Nexus 6 was still covered under my existing Asurion coverage. My chat session is below, but they said that the device is covered. I'll definitely be saving a copy of this chat for my records, but it seems that if you already had smartphone insurance on your Verizon line, the Nexus 6 will be covered.
My name is Kenzie B, how may I assist you?
Me: Hi Kenzie
Kenzie B: Hi, how are you today?
Me: Good, thank you
Me: I recently bought the Nexus 6 from Motorola.com
Me: And I have been paying for Asurion insurance on my line for a couple of years
Me: I'm just wondering if my Nexus 6 will be covered through the insurance
Kenzie B: It would be my pleasure to assist you. Is the device currently active on your account?
Me: Yes
Kenzie B: I asked because the device is appearing as a non Verizon device and I am unable to see the type of device that is on the account. I am seeing that the device does have a protection plan so the device will be covered.
Me: Okay great, I also noticed that the device wasn't showing up in my account so just wanted to make sure that it was still covered
Kenzie B: Yes, you are still covered. Thank you for being the most important part of our Verizon family. Was there anything else that I could assist you with today?

That is a good idea, I am actually doing that now to be on the safe side (getting a chat convo on record).
I did call Verizon and Asurion twice (just to confirm a pattern) and got the same answers as you did, they said the line is covered not the phone itself. As long as the Nexus 6 is on my line that I am paying insurance for, it will be covered. Much relief knowing this $700 beast is not a money burning time bomb lol.

I didn't ask but probably the same as if you didn't send a phone back, or in this case if you didn't send them back the same nexus 6 they sent you overnight, which is you get charged full price for the phone.
Verizon Asurion
I just wanted to post my screen shot of the chat session I had with a Verizon rep today.
She confirmed I would keep my insurance coverage.
I tried looking for answers and could find anything but this thread so I wanted to post what I found as well.
I just wanted to let everyone know my experience today with Verizon and Asurion. When I bought my Nexus 6 from Google I called Verizon and was told I would have to wait till open enrollment to get my Nexus 6 covered. (i still have coverage for my S4). I called Verizon today because it's now open enrollment. The Verizon rep told me that she could enter my info, but that she didn't think Asurion would cover my phone since Verizon didn't have the Nexus 6 available. She ask me to call Asurion to confirm.
The first representative at Asurion told me they would cover my Nexus 6, but since Verizon doesn't have the phone they would only replace it with a comparable device.
I knew Att had the Nexus 6 so I looked up the insurance company for Att. Seems it's the exact same insurance company... Asurion. I called Asurion to see if they would replace the Nexus 6 with a Nexus 6 since they have/cover them for Att. They said no, it's 2 different parts of the company and one is not available for the other. Even if they had 50 Nexus 6s in the warehouse they wouldn't replace it because Verizon doesn't have them available. Furthermore Asurion wouldn't accept any claim for a Nexus 6 on the Verizon network because it's a non authorised device on the Verizon network.
Bottom line it's possible Asurion will not cover any Nexus 6 claims. Not even to replace it with a comparable device. Guess it's time to find a new insurance company for my phone.

It's a business practice. They don't allocate one carrier's phones for another carrier. In your example, it is a perfect reason why they can't do that. The AT&T Nexus 6 comes with the AT&T logo printed on the back, and the boot screen is the AT&T logo with their jingle.
If you are looking for insurance, look into SquareTrade or MotoCare.

Yea, to be honest it would be pretty illogical to think that Verizon would cover this at all since you are not using their phone. Working on their network isn't the same as it being a phone they offer. Asurion can only give you a comparable model based on your carriers offerings, not a comparable model compared to anything available in the world. It's kind of the gamble you take using a non carrier branded phone on a their network.

Not to mention the AT&T N6 comes factory locked whereas the Google and T-Mobile versions are unlocked out of the box, do that would be another issue in giving out an AT&T version as a replacement.
