Hey!
Since I'm flashing alot of ROM's and reinstalling etc all the time, it would be nice not having to make all the Settings over and over again.
Where are the settings stored?
Can't be very hard to create a installable CWM zip-file with those?
I would appreciate any help regarding this...

depends what your trying to save... you can use titanium backup there is a free and donate version and it is a must have app if your flashing all the time...
1 click backup (all apps + data )
1 click restore. saves lots of time and hassle

I know this already, though... I would like to acheive this using a CWM zip, though...
as far as i know its not possible yet.... i tried this myself and couldnt get it to work...
you can go to www.romkitchen.org and there you can select create an update.zip which you can pack all the stock apps and boot animations / keyboards and stuff... that is flashable thru CWM but to make your own zip file full of 3rd party apps wont work.

To clearify, it's only the android settings i want to backup. Not app settings...
But I'm sure you got that already.
well titanium backup can back up system data, but if your flashing a different rom its not recommended to restore system data from the previous rom as this can cause instability issues.
If u use a modded kernel like speedmod in cwm recovery backup data,dbdata and cache. Then you can flash and restore only apps.
For settings use titanium but you need the same base rom or something wrong can happen like random fc.

In the latest Titanium Backup update (5/14/11) you now have the ability to convert system apps to user apps, and vice-versa.
I may be completely missing the obvious, but what would the significance of converting one of the apps be?

Converting from system to a user app frees up space in /system which is limited. TB lists the space left in a graph in the overview.

Umm... user apps still use space in your system. Everytime you install something from the market it takes up system space. The only thing I can think of, is that usually you can't restore system apps from rom to rom where as user apps can move from different base to different base.

Check your /system space, convert a system app to a user app and then check /system space again - it will be more - at least that is what happens on MY captivate...
Also, you can restore system apps to another ROM - you just can't restore system data if you don't want problems...

User app still take up space in the system unless you move them to sd. I forgot once you convert them you can do that. Some system apps will not restore right correctly on another rom. I've had spareparts dropped in my system and not restore correctly on another rom. But whatever... doesn't really matter.
this feature should be really helpfull for stock based rom builds, but yeah mainly it'll let you remove them from the system and store them wherever.
a few times i tried restoring stock apps on new roms they wouldn't install, this may be a nice helping hand in that direction.

general question about upgrading a new firmware.
When I do that and I got a "wipe" firmware, I usually wipe and reinstall everything and reconfigure all my apps.
It takes a while but, as seasoned windows user, I know this is the best way to have a clean and full speed installation so to avoid "registry" cluttering.
Is this applicable also to Android? Or using Nandroid or Titanium I can restore my apps with "messing up" with my shiny new firmware?
It is quite quick to put your credentials on facebook or foursquare but all the word learnt by swype or all rebuild all the folders structure is taking a while...

Using Titanium Backup, you can just backup user apps and data, and leave system apps alone. Then when you upgrade to a new firmware (I recently went from KK5 to KL8) you can use your Titanium Backup just to restore the user apps and data you backed up, and leave the system apps and data alone. That way you'll have only the system app data from your new ROM, but all the user apps and data from your old one.
When I flashed my new ROM, I went ahead and selected to restore all user and system apps and data. Of course I can't tell you how my phone's performance compares to if I hadn't done so, but I can tell you that my phone is faster (because of the new code, I'm sure) than it was before, and I'm having absolutely no issues whatsoever.
I do my ROM backup using ROM Manager by CWM, app + data backup using TBP and EFS folder using kTool. It always works well.
In one of the stock LA1 firmware threads in the dev section (stock LA1 is a wipe firmware) a user has reported success by restoring his data partition from a previous Nandroid backup.
Haven't tried it myself, as I agree with your approach of starting from a "clean" slate. Android doesn't have a registry, but the DBDATA partition could be considered similar?
I prefer the clean slate approach, but after I instructed my Custom Dictionary for one month and organized all my apps in nice folders I wanted to understand if there are risks here.
It is not clear for me what are also the information related to a certain fw that an apps saves... is that possibile for instance to do a restore in ICS of a backup done in Gingerbread?

I read somewhere it can be used to create a zip file of your backup apps.. in your next flash you can flash the update.zip in order to restore your apps from "cwm recovery"..!!

It's only tb. App u flash with cwm,but do a nandroid backup and tb. can extract and restore from your nandroid.quite easy
When u make a tb.zip then use titaniumbackup.zip name,so it's easy to locate and flash.
U use this when u wipe and instal new rom.
Btw.if u extract your rom using root explorer u can modify,delete/add apps and kernel,everything to your liking,then zip it with rootexplorer and flash in cwm.then it's only a few apps u have to restore depends on how many apps u have installed.
Remember if this file doesn't exist then create it and put your 3' apps in there

Can you explain more clearly..I'm confused on what you said about make tb.zip..(how)..?
So do I make zip > use update.zip function..??
Open settings in tb. There is an option to make a "update.zip" of tb. This one u can flash from cwm,but its only needed to flash when u wipe your phone and it's only tb. App that is restored,the rest of your missing apps u restore from tb.
In tb. settings there is also an option to extract your nandroid backup(of cause u got 1) and restore apps from that.
About "root explorer". read a bit more on how to add and remove things from roms u downloaded.even though it's quite easy to do

I was hoping there would be a method whereby all my apps could be compressed in one zip file, which I can then flash in cwm to "restore" all my apps..
I hate the tiring method of restoring them manually..!!

When u restore in premium u select the apps(as in free) but it's then 1-click restore and tb. do the rest.and a whole lot nice features comes with the premium

What exactly is an update.zip file used for? I know I had to run it when I flashed AOKP to my Droid Inc. It was in the instructions to do so, but I was not completely sure what I was doing at that exact step of the process.
Also, I have TB (Premium). I use it to back up all system data and user apps. I have never needed it to restore any data, but I am sure I will in the future. This is mainly because I flashed AOKP M5 to my Galaxy Nexus a little over 2 weeks ago and have not looked back.
My last question at the moment is this. If I wipe/clear cache, clear dalvik cache and wipe user data (factory reset) how does my TB data stay in tact exactly?

There are several ways to install applications or library

It definitely makes more sense now, but I am not quite there yet. Are you saying that update.zip file is just one option and that using TB would be an alternate to using update.zip file?

In tb the update.zip function used to restore tb only from cwm.. Or you can create an update.zip in order to restore/update something in your rom (as in your case when you installed aokp you also flashed update zip)

No, clearing cache or dalvik cache nor factory reset will affect TB. or it's data.
And wipe cache + dalvik is a good thing to do once in a while.
Factory reset is is done i u flash a new rom or have trouble with your phone, lag,slow or other problems
Usually this is caused by some app or settings. Then do a factory reset,if u can't find the problem

But can update.zip file be created where all my apps are inside or compressed inside..??

No, not with TB but u can extract and restore apps from your cwm(nandroid) backups.
check out the APP2ZIP,that can do do exactly what u are looking for,make a flashable zip with your apps and settings.u can find it here on xda and in play store.

No. It isn't that simple. While you could install titanium backup with the update . zip the phone still won't boot. And you need a running system to even start tb.
So you would need the Rom you were using. Flash that first and flash the tb update.zip afterwards. Then you will get a rom with tb already installed.
From there you can start to restore apps you hopefully have backed up before...

Yes.. It's all there as long as you don't wipe or format sd card. (tb data folder)

Reviving this to add that last month tb added support for update.zip which holds all backups.
Theres 2 now:
1. settings > update.zip is a flashable zip with only tb
2. batch > recovery update.zip is a flashable zip with all backups
Everyone should be using one of these two methods to ensure u have the latest tb to restore from (since roms are always out of date), or to restore everything straight in recovery.
So i have a friend who showed me the pics below.
Any idea how to fix this without formatting, rooting, burning?
The phone is a stock ZR without any modifications whatsoever and i don't intend to do any mods to it, not even an official format if possible.

you need to formatt your phone.if you have important apk files,message files just backup in sdcard.you can backup your APK apss using -App Backup & Restore-////message backup- SMS Backup & Restore-
