I've got a T-Mobile Moto X (XT1053) on the way. I didn't do the dev version since I wanted to customize with motomaker. I'm intending to use it with AT&T though in the short term.
I'm curious if anyone else doing this arrangement can comment on the native tethering experience on AT&T? Since it's the T-Mobile model, does it bother with an entitlement check? Does it just work? That's pretty much the only reason for me to bother rooting since I wanted to stay on the stock rom for this phone. Would be pretty sweet if tethering just worked
Whoops - noticed this is general. Mods please move to Q/A section

If you're planning to root it, you can solve the problem easily...otherwise, at least my att phone tried to check with net10 (my carrier) when I triT
There is a thread with the instructions for wifi tethering w/out the check.
If I could get away without rooting it i'd rather skip doing so, but if the check is still happening than I guess that's a good reason to root. Saw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544679 is how to get around if rooted.
I just got the dev model this week and native tethering works perfectly on AT&T, no need to root.

Awesome, thanks!
Just got my MotoMaker T-Mobile model today and popped in an AT&T nano sim. Tethering indeed works perfectly on it! YAY.
Was using FoxFi on my non-rooted Verizon Moto X Dev. Edition for a WiFi hotspot, but that broke with the upgrade to Kit Kat.
Anyone found a solution, or another app that allows a WiFi hotspot on KitKat?
Thanks.

Are you entirely opposed to rooting? If rooted, there is a system mod available that allows native tethering. I'm using it on my VZW DE and it works great. Aside from modding system files, there are apps available for sideloading, but all require root access.
This was my main reason for rooting, and only came after I could find no means to wifi tether while leaving my X unrooted on 4.4
Or wait for FoxFi to issue a patch.

I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but there really is no reason not to unlock and root your dev edition anymore. Unlocking no longer voids your warranty and you can gain root very easily after its unlocked.

Good points. Not totally opposed to rooting. I've been rooting and ROMing since the OG Droid. Just sort of grew tired of all of that.
I usually stay stock on my phones until I have a really good reason to root. This may be it if I can't find a non-root solution to WiFi tethering.
I still have unlimited data and I like to tether my Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 to my phone when I am away from my home network.
Speaking of rooting the Moto X on Verizon...............in the past, I've used the root toolkits to root my phones for the simple ease of the process.
Is there a tookit available to the Moto X in the event that I will ultimately want to root mine? Or a simple set of instructions to root?
I still have the Android SDK installed on my computer, but I honestly haven't messed with it since I rooted my Galaxy Nexus some time ago.

Use mfastboot (SDK fastboot will error out, size restraints or something) and flash TWRP. It will ask if you'd like root via SuperSU when rebooting, then just update it from the Play Store. Couldn't be easier.
adb, fastboot, mfastboot, moto drivers:

I'd also recommend grabbing the image files from moto's site should anything happen to go wrong, or just to have should you want to go back to stock at any point down the road:

What is the easiest way to root the moto x and get wifi tethering working again.
I see a thread on the second page about rooting but it does not mention the Verizon model.
Is anyone on T-Mobile and able to tether successfully? I recently picked up the developer edition and am unable to tether on Android 4.4 Kit Kat. I used to be able to tether on my Nexus 4 running 4.3 without a tethering plan.
Yeah... Google broke (or fixed depending on your point of view) this in 4.4. No longer works without a plan on both my Nexus 4 and Moto X.
One less reason for stock Android.

Were you able to find a workaround on your Moto X? Or are you just accepting that it is no longer there.

I used it so rarely I don't really care. There is a workaround if your rooted (changing an entry in an SQLite file). Try a search.

I have a short trip coming and would like to have the WiFi tethering if possible. My current data plan does not have the subscription.
And my phone is not rooted.
Is it possible to have by-pass check for a week?
Thanks

Havent seen any nonroot tethering working, i know Verizon will let you for $1 a day if you call ahead.
Since the T-Mobile version is basically the same as a Developer Edition phone, can you enable WiFi hotspot on that one without additional fees?

With the Moto X, they seem to know that you're tethering... I as able to do this on my Nexus 4 running < 4.4 but once I upgraded, I wasn't able to anymore...
I haven't found a workaround right now.
My understanding is that there is no work around under 4.4 without root.

Just root and get it. rooting this device was pretty easy. if you do not have the developer edition it will void your warranty though.

I use GFE. Until that thread sorts out KitKat, I'd have to wait.

what about the moto X and 4.3? Were you able to tether with t-mobile without a tethering plan before the kitkat upgrade? Thanks.
I'm on the $30 T-Mobile plan. Tethering worked before 4.4.
So im a big noob with terminology and how rooting works but i did a ota update and i now have zvc. As far as i understand u cant go back below zvb and even for zvb theres no root upgrade? Imo this phone is completely useless. Sprint locked this phone doen by software?
Yes, that's my understanding too (I'm no expert though). You can try the mellowmallow (or however it's spelled) for ZVB, which isn't root, but gives some more flexibility/options compared to stock. It's in another thread undr the Android development subgroup of this Sprint Lg G4 group
Man this phone is useless then??? No tethering because sprint sucks?? Gosh. How would i know if i can root v20 and tether? Not until someone roots it? Sprint carrier phones cant tether unless rooted period huh

You can purchase EasyTether for $10 from their website. It allows usb, wireless, and bluetooth tethering. I'm using it now on my G4 and have used it for years on other phones. Works perfectly.
good luck,
DC
Keep your hopes up......recent news hinting at 'possible' exploit for a number of phones including G4, but nothing is certain obviously. Code not being released for said exploit because of November security patches. But who knows......possible maybe.. This was shared in some other xda subs http://arstechnica.com/security/201...tflips-to-root-android-phones-is-now-a-thing/
