Galaxy Gear flops? (Update: Samsung says no... it's actually a success) - Samsung Galaxy Gear

According to this article (and its source) it does:
http://appleinsider.com/articles/13...tch-flops-with-just-50000-units-sold---report
Such a shame! For starters they could have reduced the high return rates by making the SDK public and adding some more apps to the store.
Is it really just a pilot? Personally I don't care now we have unleashed the potential powers of the Gear with fOmey's Null_ rom
As an app developer I do care however... I'm burning to create apps for this device. But all signs are in a complete other direction
Update1: Just in : according to Samsung it is a success!

Update 2: And look who is making the headlines over at Engadget!
http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/19/galaxy-gear-smartwatch-custom-rom/

i don't see how its a flop .... just because some wieners say it is a flop doesn't means its true. null_ roms from f0mey are making me fall in love with my gear, its an awesome device , just needs the potential unlocked by samsung providing SDK free for all and some good developers developing for this device. I am sure it would happen soon.

richie
p.s. : i got rid of iphone 5 just for this (GEAR), and i have an ipad lying around .... i have always been android lover but have a lumia 925 too .... and my preference is android, apple is dead meat. Windows mobile is ****....

I think that Apple refuses to appeal to early adopters. If a product doesn't sell a billion units and appeal to the simplistic users they feel its a failure. Personally I use a MBP and have for years and love it, however I wouldn't piss on an iOS device because outside its initial release when there wasn't other device like the iPad/iPhone out there. Now it hasn't advanced for ****. Being an early adopter I love the constant change and dev. of the devices. For me its not about what fancy accessories I can get but what the device itself can do and how it can be pushed. Oh well, they will forever sit and bash on Android devices now that Steve Jobs is gone. Their competitive edge and creativity is gone too.

Samsung just contradicted the 50k estimate, says it sold 800k units

Hahaha! Congratulations. You made the headlines !

800k it's not bad. If the system was not close ( just a few samsung phones) the sales were 5x at least. I own smart watch 2 and gear, note 3 and z1. The pluses for sm2 are the waterproof and a little bit the clasic design. Gear is better expecialy after the last update. I wear everyday the gear.

QQ. when 2.3 is coming out for O2X ? any dates or promises ?

Hi. title says its all.
i am wondering when we will get 2.3 from LG.
June july rumors......

Why wait? Get rid of that piece of consumer unfriendly product and buy either an iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy S 2.
Who wants to run 2.3 on a LG phone if the Galaxy S 2 already comes with it and is able to generate over 3 million preorders?

simpe. i had the SGS2 for while and played with it for while. and i hate the Mali GPU. it doesnt even run most of the good games. those games needs to be tweeked in order for them to run. which is not good for a gamer like me. Plus the exclusive Tegra games is a plus. hell the SGS2 cant run yooninja without sound skipping and game frame skipping. and i will not wait for developers to re build their games so i can play them.
i love the screen . but thats about it for the SGS2. its very thin. its very big. i like the thin part. i dont like the big part.
over all its a good phone. but if i will buy a phone which i use for gaming. i am ending up with 3 options
1- xperia play for the Dpads.
2- iphone for the huge selection of games.
3- Tegra 2 android device for obvious reasons i mentioned above.
i am very much leaning toward an iphone. but none of the 3 options above are bad choices.
there will be an SGS 2 with Tegra 2. that much has been confirmed. when that gets released. i am there day one.
Agree! Also here in Netherlands rumord end of July.

Thing is, if like me your into gaming... the Galaxy S2 isn't the choice given that for the UK at least, we won't see a Tegra version. There are games that aren't compatible with the Galaxy S2.
Back on topic... The O2X is in need of a updating ASAP. TBH, I take it with a pitch of salt until I start to see people on here say they are now updating to 2.3 either via PC or Handset Updater.
Yes, there are problems at the moment but LG WON'T leave it like this. I would rather LG wait until its ready, than rush and end up with more problems etc...
I aslo heard rumors for June, july. Time will show
Well... things have a habit of taking an extra month in the LG world... So i think not before august.

What are you doing here play the forum Troll
hahaha troll troll troll
get out of here! i'm sure you bought an LG O2X and couldn't handle it. go ahead and buy the plastic version that samsung has

Very clever Samsung, A light went on with me today

when you search the internet the Galaxy Gear gets bad press and its nuts, I was a little put off buying one at the start but decided yesterday to spend the cash as I am in Brisbane Australia for 3 weeks of training then back to NZ, I when I first brought my gear (yesterday) went to try some notifications and thought what the hell Samsung why would I want a notification that means I then had to open my phone.......... now think about this
Samsung is NOT some back yard designer/manufacture but a multi discipline very very big company, did you know they build heavy Industries?
So now we know Samsung is a very clever bunch of people... why would they sell a product with such a negative response from the public?
My answer to this came today when I upgraded my Gear to the latest firmware version and suddenly ALL the things we wanted were present, think about this.... how hard was it for Samsung to add this extra features? SIMPLE... so why release it without it?
NEGATIVE ADVERTISING IS THE CLUE
If you think about the amount of coverage this has given Samsung in a very short time well....... and they fix it with a simple update? perfect marketing!!
Oh and im very happy with my gear including the price, it will exponentially improve over the next few months
Also look at the thread count and posts in the smart watch section, another thing you see comments out there stating its useless without a phone.... well yes you need to do the initial setup, but its got a built in clock, when you turn off your phone, or flatten it...it still keeps time
samsung is great at making hardware, but i can't think of any part of the software that i really appreciate. i would love if they just stick to releasing new devices itself running pure android.

Samsung with the latest update is wayyyy ahead of sony smartwatch witch is on the 3th generation. They launched the gear without some of the improuvments because they WANTED baddly to be the first, before Apple. What i don't understand is why samsung is not sending again the gear to be reevaluate by tech media after the last update.

Also, the negative publicity because of the non-availability of key features on a device that's hardware specs should allow, makes developers naturally want to get their hands on it and fix these problems, then what does Samsung have, a bigger developer following to help enhance this newer device form factor so they can be the first on the front lines with the most development, so they can set themselves as the main smart watch manufacture, so they can control more of the market, in short, they peoples at the Samsung do da business sneaky and outs o dey own greed like a de apple butt-a-heads (but not nearly as selfish and unconcerned about the true advancement of technology as the advancement of their own wallet) Lolz on rants but it's true.

Panic Over : Galaxy Gear will get Tizen update

http://www.techradar.com/news/porta...upgrade-original-galaxy-gear-to-tizen-1227889
Hold on to your hats!!! I mean Galaxy Gears.... Or even buy up the old ones cheap as they have a larger battery and will obviously be cheaper than the Gear 2 & Neo.
Some of you suggested this which was nice and sensible as it was only a software update, but some clearly thought that GG owners would be left abandoned after just 6 months or less.... There is no icon to roll my eyes as much as I need to here.
Anyway - rejoice as the Jesus watch rises.
Sooo who's first to do the downgrade?
I haven't seen Tizen in person yet, but I'm 100% sure it will not replace Null ROM with my needs.
When one news source publishes something completely unsubstantiated that doesn't make it true. Here's the quote...
There was a worry that there would be no love for the older model, but a Samsung spokesperson confirmed to TechRadar that the Android would be stripped out and replaced with the new OS.
http://www.techradar.com/news/porta...upgrade-original-galaxy-gear-to-tizen-1227889Maybe it's true, maybe TechRadar is phishing for click-throughs. Kind of like re/code saying Samsung was ditching TW to please Google who sold Motorola to please Samsung. No outward sign of either unsubstantiated rumor being true (so far).

Assuming that it will be sidegraded/downgraded to Tizen, then the real issue is the other quote from a Samsung representative, the part that mentions that only the gear 2 and gear 2 neo will have their sdk released and even with Tizen on our original Galaxy Gears, we won't getting any decent apps.

And by extension if you have software development kit you can develop apps that run on Tizen.
The Galaxy Gear will have a some point ..... knowing how fast Samsung is maybe in months run Tizen.
A Tizen app is a Tizen app if it runs on the Gear 2 it will run on the Galaxy Gear (unless the app uses the heart rate monitor)
Other than the heart rate monitor the Galaxy Gear has the same hardware as the Gear 2, it will running Tizen and have exactly the same apps.
Now me I personally do not believe any watch running Tizen will ever have more Apps that a watch running Android but other that no heart rate monitor, maybe a ever so minor improvement on the clock there it no reason buy a Gear 2.
Me at this point I really do not care, I am 95% certain if anything I will get a Gear Fit, and the Gear Fit will not run Tizen or have many if any future apps.

Hopefully someone will come up with a free option in converting apps to Tizen. $5000 PER APP is absurd. What about ask the developers who create free apps for android? What about customers who have paid for apps but the developers don't choose to pay 5grand to convert the app to a Tizen compatible version? If developing apps using HTML5 is as easy as Fomey says it is then we may have a shot at getting decent apps for the gear2, but if not...... My choice to hold out for the gear2 instead of getting the galaxy gear will probably bite me in the arse. I wonder if the galaxy gear will be able to downgrade after the Tizen update. If not I better go grab one now...

Seriously tho, it would be awesome if HTML5 apps have hardware access.. we shall see!
I'll be impressed if they can OTA a whole new OS onto the watch. It's a little shady though. Imagine buying an apple computer, and having them ota windows onto it 6 months later.

Dollar for Calculator app!

The lack of apps and not being able to sideload is irritating right now but I believe when development progresses we will get these things. I refuse to pay a dollar for a calculator app or 2048. I would like to have them on my watch but think they are taking advantage. I just gave samsung 200 dollars, they should provide more free useful apps.

Some... yes. A calculator should be stock. What's with the attitudes on here today? If they are going to compete with android, they are going to want to develop a lot more apps.
P.s. And over the years, I have given them a couple of thousand. I've been very loyal to samsung.

I agree, man. I love some of the stock apps, for example, the remote app, but a calc app should be default too. I would consider paying for the calc app if it at least had a percentage option.
You can sideload apps, it's just that there are no apps to sideload. I'm sure samsung will provide us with a a calculator just as they provided a sleep app which wasn't available before the weekend

Completely agree with azpatterson3, the calculator is the symbol for the problem! It's not the dollar for the an app. I like many always try to buy the dev's paid apps and I have hundreds of apps stuck on play to prove it! However, for Tizen we have (almost) only that one app (not counting the nascent watch face efforts, and Glympse). Morover, a basic calculator app is the type of app that every single beginning developer publishes for free just to get started! Samsung marketing this in their new Tizen store is . . . .puzzling! The irony is thick!
I do accept polish_pat's point too. There will be a free calculator, more watch faces and more. . . everything. Hopefully many created by outside devs that we can side load. But waiting is really, really frustrating.
Reminds me of when I bought a Motorola Atrix some years back (don't even remember which model right now!) I and many others were waiting and waiting for development on roms --it was painfully slow and limited. I felt like I won the lotto when I switched to samsung and found the rich, and fast development that hit all their galaxy (and note) phones.
However, with our Neo we're back in Matrix territory again. . .waiting for the developers to cross the river and setup shop. It won't be as fast since the population of users is much smaller, probably won't be as rich either. Fortunately, this is only a watch
As for Samsung leading any development surge, well, that would be great. but I suspect they will focus on ensuring the NEo has everything that is out there for other smart watches health bands and that's about it.
Moreover, if the way mucked up the S-Health/ Fitness for Gear approach is any model for how they will go forward, then we truly are going to be stuck in a mediocre app environment. I really hope they get better than that!
Still, I am enjoying what the Neo has now -- the (limited) sleep app, the telephony (great!), text messages and even S voice is pretty good for some searches and messaging for me (so far). Although more than once I have had to nervously say "cancel message" in a panic after looking at what my watch and S voice interpreted my words to be! )

An OS is nothing without a community behind it. You can have the best, most efficient, smooth and gorgeous OS but its simply sucks if there is no one to code for it (aka windows mobile) This watch is Tizen's first serious market entry, so of course it sucks, for now, but remember that the king of mobile gadgets is behind it and it will eventually be something great. We are the pioneers of Tizen, we are paving the way for the future. Tizen is a good opportunity for any dev to have a fresh, new and especially easy revenue stream. I mean a guy coded a freakin simple calculator app and sold it for 1$. I'm sure that by the end of May, he will make at least a couple grand on something that any dev can code in under 1h. Same goes for any other app. If i were a dev, I'd jump on this opportunity of knowing this is a new emerging market that has a very serious bunch of backers (Open handset alliance) and within a year, there will be at least a couple hundreds of thousands of devices just screaming for 3rd party apps. And although a calculator might not be something that someone would spend a dollar on, there are many, many other simple apps that people would pay for. As an example, porting a T1 wrinting input that would allow us to write something directly on the watch
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk
I'm developing a simple calculator app I'm going to release for free... I find it crazy people are charging for extremely simple apps! I can see charging $1-5 for an app that actually takes some work to develop, but comon, a watch face for $2?!
Its all about opportunity. I'm not ever going to spend 2$ on a watchface, but suply x - demand xxxxxxxxxxx and as long as it stays like that, there will be more and more basic apps for a premium price

I consider myself a .NET developer first and Java a lid becoming a close second although I still have a lot to learn. Tizen widgets use HTML and Javascript for the backend. So if you know HTML5 and J Query I would say it's easier than android. Hard part is limited auto complete and knowing the SDK. For the most part I avoided the sdk.
Thanks for app!

Yes, all you need to do is zip up the wgt file and post that. We can side load w/ sdb install.

I'll see if I can post mine later tonight. Found a small bug with mine where you can stack functions... also going to be implementing advanced functions here soon.
I just zip the wgt file with any normal zip program?
So you don't need the sdk to make app for this watch? I am not a programmer but I read that sdk is closed sources. I know closed source is restricted.

my sentiments exactly...

Rumor has it...

The possibility of a Samsung / Google Wear watch may be announced during Google I/O. How does this make you feel about your gear? GO!

I'm hoping that if Samsung does release an Android Wear watch, that it is of similar hardware as our Gear 2s and some dev smarter than me can port the OS to ours. Otherwise, I may be upset since I just bought mine 2 weeks ago. That is of course depending on the features of the rumored watch.
If it's all of the "wear" functionality, I'm not gonna be happy. I got my gear 2 neo just over a month ago which means I can't return it...

I'm selling my gear 2 for a gear wear (or any good android wear watch) the second it hits the market. Im not ready to live thru tizens maturity for wearables. Until now i've been disappointed with the app selection and notifications. Any android app is a few lines of code away from being an android wearable app and that means a lot to an ecosystem that has a lot of added value with already a huge community behind it
More than likely I'll sell the gear and get one of these android wear watches. I don't know yet, we'll see next week.

I managed to return mine on day 26 !!!

The Neo wasn't that expensive after the recent sales so even if I ditch for AW, it won't be too much of a loss. I knew Android Wear was coming, yet kept the Neo as I'm hoping the awesome potential of the hardware can be unlocked eventually. I don't get the comments like "I'll be pissed, because I just got my Gear" - AW was announced awhile ago with expectation that devices will be dropping this summer - it shouldn't be a surprise to you guys.
AW will most likely have more Dev support and more apps. The only thing is I don't need -all- the apps, just specific ones to get what usage out of a smartwatch I want.
I'm encouraged as some of the stuff I have been requesting from Devs are being fulfilled. Maybe we get lucky and AW can get ported to this hardware (doubtful). If AW can't get ported to Neo, I hope Samsung announces an AW unit that has the IR blaster like the Neo- I'm open to trading to that. To my knowledge no other AW announced has the IR blaster, and I kind of want that.
It will be interesting to see what is announced. Just got my Gear 2 last week, and I love it, so I'm not looking to buy anything new anytime soon.

Turn your flame blower off. Everyone here knows about Wear, and knows what they currently have, as well as what may be to come. The question was not to agitate, but to gain perspective...

Best move for Samsung at this point it to ditch Tizen and work on converting the Galaxy Gear watches to Android Wear. This isn't a war they can win. This is very reminiscent to the HP Touchpad problem.
HP faced STRONG criticism when the Touch Pad failed similarly. HP didn't support a HP-OS conversion to Android and Cyanogen had to come to the rescue.

Who's flaming? I was just offering my opinion which I thought you were asking for input. Since you're so sensitive about it I won't bother continuing then, what was the point at all? sheesh.

There is one major difference, Tizen has a lot of MAJOR players involved that will do everything in their power to develop it and make it a major android contender. HP was a lone player with their own OS in a world where there already was a lot of other mature OSs. The wearables is the only chance Tizen has to florish because there is nobody in that market yet, if it does it will be on your wrist. I like android wear much more but if done right, Tizen can be something worth it

Maybe Samsung should find a developer that can TIZEN a sim card, gps, and allow streaming music and video on the watch.

What if... IF... Samsung is announcing they're ditching Tizen for Google Wear altogether?! How awesome would THAT be?!

It would be awesome. Samsung has already stated that they are releasing a wear smartwatch, which is most likely a test to see what their customers will go for. Judging by the huge gaping hole in the Tizen app store, I don't blame them. By formally releasing their own Google Wear device, it looks like they have already made their decision as to the future of Tizen on smart watches. At least for now.

So now that samsung gear live has been announced and is available for order today can we get that os on our neos?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk
It seems unclear what the Samsung strategy is, as the new device has no camera or home button.
It sounded like Samsung siding with Google and maybe ditching Tizen.
Hopefully it will be a mix and Gear 2 & Neo users get Google Wear, but knowing Samsung after barely 3 months they may just ditch them.

I agree, I expect our Gear watches have very similar hardware to the new Samsung Android Wear device and just maybe now that we have root on this device, we could flash an Android Wear ROM onto them?

In theory yes. I know that me and some other developers are working on creating custom roms and recovery for the gear 2/neo. Its just a matter of time before we can access the recovery. Once that is done we should be able to flash Android Wear on to them. The Live and Neo are almost the same compared to specs. The Gear 2, however, has a camera function that isn't present in Live. Also the IR function would be gone as well.

That's excellent news and I'd be very interested in giving this a go as it's looking like Tizen is 'dead in cradle'!
