Hi all, im experiencing some serious background noise in any video i record on my VZW moto x. I upgraded to 4.4 ota today, not rooted yet. Ive only had the phone 4 days and i think video was the only thing i forgot to test when i first got it. I tested the slow-mo, but that has no sound.
Anyone else experience terrible sound while playing back recorded videos? Here is an example - h t t p ://goo.gl/ZrtJcY
It sounds even worse on the device than it does in that video. help!
UPDATE: I ended up returning this phone due this and other reasons. I took advantage of the Moto sale and got a dev edition moto x on verizon and havent had this problem at all. Not sure what was up, maybe a bad microphone.. Not really sure.
That sounds really bad. Mine does not do that.

Don't think I ran into any of the noise you're getting. I am running ART on my VZW dev edition on kitkat. The reason I bring up ART vs dalvik, is because on reddit, i saw a post that compared ART-recorded video to dalvik-recorded video and the ART-recorded video had a tiny bit of noise in the recording
Noisy Video Recording
I get real high pitch squeals when recording video similar to the OP. Any ideas?
Video Recording Squeal
Here's a sample of the squeal I get with video recordings. This happens every time. It doesn't happen when I record only audio using Tape Machine.

I think it may have something to do with the auto focus "bleading" into the mic line. Very annoying. I wonder if I got your ebay return

Why does everyone keep hating on the camera? Look through Guy Kawasaki's G+ photos and tell me if those all those unedited photos and videos he took with the MotoX are bad. It may not be the absolute best camera out there and yes, every camera will have some weak spots. But in most real world situations, this camera is still a huge step up for most people and gets the job done, especially for me knowing how crappy the camera is on the Nexus 4. If you want perfect photos, use a DSLR.
..
So the wifey just got a Moto X last night. Of course I had to play around a bit and found that the front facing camera has issues. Seems the sensor is jacked.
Take a look at the snapshot attached.
I called Moto immediately and they were very good. Setup a ticket and they sent a code to order a new phone for a replacement. They will ship out the phone with return shipping labels via Fed Ex.
Other than that the phone seems great. Just hoping this isn't common. Anyone have the same symptom? While writing this a friend of mine sent me this link...

This exactly. Mine has no problems at all in decent lighting, as soon as it is dark you will see the noise.

I expect noise definitely. High ISO with low light and that is understood. But the main issue is that from middle to right the noise has sections where it is more intense. You can actually see where it starts via a line. Like it is layered. There looks like three sections where at a certain point the noise goes up from middle to right.
As far as when the camera is on before taking a snapshot... you can see it as well. Yes in better light it is less intense but the patterns are still there via the beginning line. Almost like the sensor isn't the same from middle to left vs middle to right.
Hello everybody,
I'm going to buy a Moto X because I really like it, but I noticed that it has two problems.
1. The camera quality is good (if it could be improved, it'll be better), but in low light the video has a bad focus but above all a low frame rate.
2. The audio recorded has a nice quality; however, with loud volumes like concert or wind, it has distorsion.
Are these problems solvable in some ways or is the Moto X hardware limitated?
Thanks. Bye!
I guess we'll have to live with this camera. (Indoor mode is not great).
And audio I'm not sure!

Moto X isn't bad at all, but I can't buy it if I couldn't solve that problems!

Are you in a hurry to buy a phone? If not, I'd suggest waiting it out until the X+1 comes out later this summer/early fall. From what I've read, it sounds like a beast of a phone. If it lives up to the hype, I'll be getting one when my contract expires in November. Otherwise, you really can't go wrong with the usability of the X. The camera could use improving, but don't let that sway you from buying this device. I had my reservations about it as well when I first got mine, but I have no regrets.
Yes, I need a phone now!
If Moto X's video with low light and audio recording at a concert or disco could be improved, I'll buy it surely.
most def get the moto x u won't be disappointed the camera isn't that bad n u can install different camera apps to adjust setting also I find the audio on this phone to be great compared to other android other than HTC one'

Uhm... yeah... plus or minus... lol
But I use phone for call, browse, music and camera... Call, browse and music are common in all smartphones, camera not. I like Moto X camera, but it has the two issues I wrote, so I'd like to know if they are hardware limits or software solvable limits.

Nah I totally hear ya I was just picking on you. Not everyone carries around a DSLR for the hell of it, most people just have their phone. With the advancements Moto has made with the camera software, I honestly think the hardware is in the right place. From what I understand 4.4.4 is supposed to bring even better camera improvements over 4.4.2. Just pull the trigger and get one!
Yeah, but I tried a Moto X; in disco the audio is crappy (so at a concert I think it'll be even worse), and if there isn't a lot of light, the frame rate slows (for example, at night in a road or in a house with low lights).
4.4.4 solves this problems? If not, are they solvable with mod, tweaks, etc.?

No mod or tweaks can help it. If camera is a priority for you then you might wanna stay away from Moto X. Also 4.4.4 might bring some colour accuracy, but there will not be any significant changes. Go for XZ1C, again, if camera is the priority. The main problem with X's camera is it's inconsistency, you need to depend on your luck with it. Also there is slight purple hazing on low light shots, the sensor is far from being good, along with the optics.
Then buy a nice camera. Phones are phones with cheap cameras thrown in for kicks and giggles. ?

Nope. Anyone.
Every phone "camera" is terrible compared to even my $99 Kodak camera. Which is tiny and quite easy to carry around....especially if I know I'm gonna want to take pics where I'm going.
Phones are nice for those "crap...I don't have my camera" moments....but they are just never going to replace an actual camera...not if you want consistently decent pics. Yet people seem to expect phones to make "better" cameras all the time. Or are disappointed by the "cameras" their new phone has. Phone cameras will never be great.....not when the "real estate" for camera hardware is miniscule compared to an actual camera.
Just my 2 cents.
Opinions will vary, and to each their own. ?
---------- Post added at 08:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:56 PM ----------
BTW....if phone cameras were sold separately... With no phone, they'd be worth about $25. That should put the phone camera quality discussions in perspective.
Any news or other comments? Are there some camera or audio recording improvements for this phone?
Are camera's problems like low frame-rate and bad focus in low light and audio distorsion with high volume like concerts solvable in some way?
I'm on Verizon and I have an upgrade in a few weeks. I am between either the Motorola Droid Turbo or the HTC One M8. It seems like they both have their issues, making it hard for me to choose one. Here are my main concerns:
How does the phone feel while using it?
Does the ballistic nylon version have problems? I read the back of the phone can become screwed up.
Is the sound quality bad when using headphones? And are the speakers bad?
How is call quality? Does this phone have a good microphone?
How is the display? Are the colors bad?
How is the camera?
Can this phone be unlocked or rooted or is there at least a chance of it in the future?
I'd appreciate answers to these questions. Thank you.

1. phone feels great. Solidly built, buttons are nice and responsive. I use an Otterbox Commuter case but you don't really need to
2. No idea about the nylon, people said they really like it, i just prefer the kevlar
3. Sound quality and speakers are awesome; very loud. Sound quality is more based on the equalizer and app you're using when using headphones(for example, poweramp sounds 1000x better than using any other app, but its due to the equalizers and settings they have)
4. call quality is great. Microphone works perfectly fine. I havent had any issues and my house has a ****ty signal
5. Display is awesome. Colors are bright and vibrant. this whole nits being lower thing is garbage. I cam from an s3 which has higher nits than this, and this phones blows it out of the water.
6. Camera is decent. I don't use it that often but so far the pictures I have taken come out really nice. Some people say the shutter speed is slow, but they likely have HDR set to on or auto, so of course the shutter will be slower
7. Rooted/unlocked not as of right now, but it's been out for what, 3 weeks? Give it time and it will definitely be rooted/unlocked. There's already a bounty going out. You really don't need an unlocked bootloader but root would be ideal. All verizon and moto apps can be disabled giving you a stock android experience. I want root for gravity box but despite being an avid rooter/flasher, I see no reason to flash a new ROM.
Great phone...Noway I would get HTC ..Sounds like possibility of root just got better today...

honeymoon phase? True
Actually, I don't think the camera is that great. Try to take a photo of a piece of paper with nothing but text on it. The text in the photo will not be straight but curves.
Of course my camera of choice is a Canon EOS 60D DSLR.
Here is an example of what I am talking about:
The first yellow line shows that line of text almost straight. I can blame that on not keeping the camera perfectly level. While the second yellow line shows that line of text to be off by quite a bit. It gets worse the more text there is in the photo.

Yeah, and I have read reviews, but I posted this thread here to get a bigger range of opinions rather than judging certain aspects of the phone through a few reviews. Sometimes in a review there'll be a complaint that many others have not experienced or they may have exaggerated, or user error, etc. I want to take my purchase on the safe side.
Anyways, I'm deciding on the Turbo. Thanks to all who replied; I appreciate the responses.
I love my Droid Turbo. No issues at all
I came from an S3 too. I can say there may be a few Samsung tweaks that you'll miss. Sometimes Samsung goes overboard, but they also ADD features and options that stock Android doesn't have. But other than that and one bug that's driving me crazy, this is one amazingly awesome phone. I've been eligible for an upgrade for several months and was just waiting for the right phone. My main desires were all answered in the Droid Turbo: Fast Processor, at least 3GB RAM, battery that would last all day even with heavy usage, and a screen size that was large enough but not ridiculously big.
I have not been disappointed.
Go Turbo Go !
I went from a Razr M to a HTC One M8, to the Droid Turbo.
The ergo of the HTC is out of this world, for a large phone, one handed use was not really an issue. The Dot View case, gimmicky but it did work and it was nice to able to do some functions with it closed.
Call quality has been fine, signal is better than the M8 was, I didn't have 4g in my hobby room with it, I do with the Turbo.
Everything else has been echoed in this post. Remember, you have 14 days to take it back and yes, you'll have to eat the 35 bucks. Take it for a spin, I think you'll be surprised in a good way !
I went from the Galaxy Nexus to the Turbo with 64 gb of storage. EVERYTHING is much better on the Turbo, except two things: Screen Mirroring is terrible on the Turbo and no WiFI Hotspot without paying Verizon for double-dipping. If these two items are VERY important to you don't buy the Turbo.
Is it true that the ballistic nylon will start to fray eventually? I'm thinking of getting the kevlar backing because of that.

Don't see why that would be the case, in my opinion the Ballistic back with the raised metallic Droid emblem without the Verizon badging is far more stylish and unique.

Yeah, I'd definitely go for it if I hadn't heard of the nylon fraying for some. Plus the extra 32gb for $50 is a good deal.
Without a case I believe it will fray for sure in time, because it doesn't slide easy, but it also might keep you from dropping it or sliding out of a pocket...with a case is a moot point. the 64 gb is COOL. I didn't buy the Samsung 5 because 16 gb is not cool.
I'll just add my experience that the ballistic nylon version was way too slippery for me. I felt like I'd drop it all the time. I exchanged it for a black kevlar version and it's quite a bit grippier. I don't use a case so that may matter less to those who do.

Screen mirroring working 100% fine here via Chromecast. And you can't complain about the WiFi hotspot feature being an issue specific to the Turbo, that affects every single phone launched to date. It is against the terms of service of your contract to use a third party workaround or a root method to enable tethering. Not saying I haven't done it, not saying you will get caught or have any trouble, just that your contract explicitly states that it isn't allowed.
All of Verizon's plans for the last year or so have allowed tethering for no additional charge, and if you are stuck on an old legacy plan then it's your own fault for refusing to migrate to something more modern.
I resolved the screen mirroring, is no longer a problem, it required using Chromecast, it worked rather badly before I installed it. In regards to Hotspot if you want to pay for it buy the Turbo, if you don't; buy a Samsung phone. Good luck with your decision.

Yes these are the biggest complaints about the phone. I had more options on my Galaxy S3 or my Motorola Xoom than I do this phone when it comes to camera and video tools.
Does the camera take a decent picture one at a time? Sure. But compared to an iPhone 6 the software supplied is laughable
oh the other thing that is going to drive you crazy is the focus hunting that the camera will do while in video mode .

I tried all the cameras to fix the focus issues. None don't work best bet is to keep hdr+ on for still pictures and don't move when recording. Or do what i did sold my nexus and bought a note 4. I really wanted to like the n6 but way to many issuses for me. Maybe things changed since it came out but i got mine when it came out and sold it about a month later, i couldn't fix the issues it had nor the time to wait for it to get fixed.

Have fun. My roommate's Note 4 has the same focus issue when he records video.
L Camera can lock the focus and record. There's even a few recordings floating around the Nexus 6 subreddit of a guy taking an excellent video of a low light concert with no focus hunting at all.
