Kindle Fire HD 7 flashed with Fire2 bootloader - Dead Brick - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I admit, I got totally confused with all the multiple threads (this, this, this) on installing a second bootloader on the various Fire devices.
Somewhere along the line I ended up on the KFire2 thread and flashed that device's bootloader on my Kindle Fire HD 7.
Result? It's now a brick - no power, no boot, doesn't respond to charging, no response when connected to computer.
Is there anything that can be done to recover the device, or is it just good enough to be sold for "parts" on eBay?
Please advice.

If its within your 1 year warranty of purchasing it then amazon should send you a free replacement if you tell them it won't turn on. Otherwise I'd take a look at @kurohyou's thread in the kf2 section, it should work with a kfhd, but he has to map the contacts to the emmc out first.

Thank you @stunts513.
I sent a PM to kurohyou to see if he can spare his time to help.
Btw, I keep reading posts about a "shorting trick" but I can't seem to locate the thread. If you know where the thread is, would you mind posting it here for me please ?
Thanks a ton!
EDIT: Do you think, if I buy a new board off eBay and replace the bricked board on my device, I'd be able to have a working KFHD7? They seem to be selling for around 45$-65$ so it's not cheap, but still cheaper than a new tablet.

Nothing definite to replace drivers on the KFHD7, yet. If it's within warranty you will be fine. All Amazon checks for is physical damage and sends it back to China.

It already is out of warranty

Shorting trick doesn't work on 2nd gen devices because there's a file we need that has to be signed and pushed to the device and only amazon has it so the short trick is useless without that signed file.

Excuse me for my n00bness, but if I replace the bricked motherboard with a working one, I get a working tablet, correct ?
Appreciate your patience!

Um it should I think, hardware is all the same on the same model from what I know, as long as you make sure u buy a working mobo then it should work.

update?
Any update? Has OP purchased a new motherboard to get this to work? I have (stupidly) made the same mistake and, as you stated, my kindle is completely unresponsive (no power, flashing screen, nothing - not even with a fastboot cable).
Any update/help would be greatly appreciated.

A little late to the party here, but... I finally had a chance to reply to urover's PM today. Also, I had another person contact me about fixing KFHD7s... I made both the offer (and make it in general to everyone) that if someone could supply a KFHD7 that they do not expect to get back (specifically, finding a cheap broken one on ebay; only requirement is that the motherboard isn't grossly damaged), I'd be willing to do the work to trace where to solder to access the EMMC. After that, it's just a matter of actually soldering some wires and reflashing the bootloader.

Kindle Fire HD die after install TWRP

Hello guys, i need a lot of yours help!
I rooted my kindle fire HD and trying install TWRP to change rom with this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398603 and my kindle died after reboot i doing the hard reset and made a factory cable to try recovery and didnt work.
I need help to try another solution because i living in Brazil and here dont selling this device. i diont have option to contact amazon to repare or something like that.
Thanks
You're screwed. Like every other brick owner here.. You flashed an unsigned boot loader to a secured partition.
That recovery belongs to the first generation kindle fire.
Your only option is to return the device to Amazon

Agreed, and I know it sounds harsh, but people need to read and make sure they are looking at the forum for their device. Too many people are using tools for other types of Kindle.
Best option is to contact Amazon to see what they can do. They ate used to people taking their Kindles abroad, and I think they have a worldwide warranty?

There is no way... the device's hardware has security mechanism to prevent executing from an unisgned bootloader.
Yeah, you got an expensive paper weight now, welcome to the club. I was thinking about getting a kindle fire 2 with a cracked screen and switching it.
Hey guys, I rooted my kindle fire HD 8.9 inch and I attempted to get TWRP (or however you spell it) on there and it told me there would be a high risk of failure but I decided to take the risk and I bricked my Kindle because it would only stay on the darn boot up logo without going any further. I read these forums and people who bricked their device were immediately told to return their product or to use it as a paper weight and I was upset there wasn't anything I could do about it. However, I got it to fix because when I plugged in (I would say a standard) usb cable connected to my kindle into my computer, it recognized the device and I immediately put it into fastboot and recovered it. It ended up coming back to life. Now I'm not saying it's suddenly possible for everyone and I maybe I didn't brick it after all, but if I did and I managed to get it working again then I think people should keep trying to fix their device (nothing to drastic) and see what happens as time progresses. In other words, don't give up so easily...

The people who end up with a device that doesn't power on, doesn't charge and isn't recognised by the PC or doesn't respond to a fastboot cable have no recovery options.
Maybe in 6 months someone will find a way, but it is highly unlikely.

I read somewhere it could be possible to unblock hard brick KFHD2 by soldering a flash drive to the motherboard. Is this possible on the KFHD7?
Theoretically yes, but we haven't mapped out the pins yet because it involves most likely sacrificing a kindle fire because we have to actually pull the emmc off the motherboard to figure out which pins go where. Also it uses a usb sdcard reader not a flash drive so to speak. Kurohyou is working on it though.

[Q] Is my kindle fire hd completely dead?

I just received my new kindle fire hd few hours ago .I rooted it according to this tutorial (link: rootkindlefire.com/kindle-fire-root/how-to-root-convert-kindle-fire-hd-8-9-into-pure-android-tablet/) and everything went smoothly. However, after Step 20 of the tutorial which is enter command 'fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot', my kindle just shutted off completely and it never response since then. I have tried to hold the power button 30 seconds but nothing happens. It just seems that my kindle is completely dead. What should I do or what can I even do? :crying::crying::crying:
If it won't even turn on its hard bricked. If this was the replacement kindle I doubt u can claim it was DOA, however we have a method to fix hard bricks now sort of, it is dessigned for the kf2 but should work on the other kf's, however he is asking for someone with a dead kfhd8.9 inch, he might be interested in a 7 inch model as well, you should contact him. Lemme send u a link to his thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391047

KFHD 7 will not turn on, black screen, not recognized by PC and won't go to fastboot

Hi,
I rooted my KFHD 7 using the Bin4ry method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351201).
Then I used Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.9 to install TWRP and FireFireFire. (now that I think of it, I think I did also chose option 4: install latest COTR Recovery) before I chose to install FFF.
Both steps seemed to go smoothly, except after KFU rebooted my Kindle, the screen won't come on at all. I hold the power bottom for 20-30 sec, or for 2-3 mins, but nothing happens. I have the factory wire adapter from teambalckhat.info. I was able to boot the Kindle into fastboot mode before all these, but now nothing happens no matter what I do.
These are the steps that I did:
- Installed latest JDK 7
- Installed Android SDK and updated and installed the updates
- Removed all old amazon, kindle, android ADB drivers
- Installed the amazon drivers (with the Kindle unplugged)
- I put Kindle in ADB mode and plugged it in using regular USB
- I rooted it using Bin4ry method and there was SU on my Kindle after this was done.
- I started KFU 0.9.9, chose options 3, then 4, then 5 (install TWRP recovery, install COTR recovery, install FFF)
- Then, the device rebooted into a brick!
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can tell me what to do. I searched all over the forums but didn't find an answer.
Thank you so much in advance!
Fire fire fire is for the first gen kindle. you have a serious problem now that currently can't be fixed. You flashed the boot loader for a wrong device now it can't even begin to boot. There is a thread in the kf2 forum that shows promise that one day this will be fixable though
Sent from my KFTT using xda app-developers app
Actually good news, we just have our first complete fix in that thread. Its a kf2, but it should work on the kfhd with the knowhow, a steady hand, and a soldering iron. Or you can send it to kurohyou so he can make a bolt-on solderless PCB for the kfhd 7". He is currently making one for the kf2, but has no kindles of other models to make the PCB fit onto the kindles motherboard for reference. But if its still under warranty see if Amazon will replace it first.

Thanks for the replies.
Would Amazon know that I did this? and if they would know, do they care?
They probably know you did this, they are usually forgiving the first time around, some people don't think its right to send it in in this condition, though personally if they say they cover it then its 200$ less out of my pocket the way I see it. I don't know if it matters what you tell them, but you might be able to go with "it won't turn on after it updated" or tell the truth its up to you.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD running CM10.1 Tablet UI using xda-developers app
All Amazon asks for warranty questions is 1) Any water damage known? 2) Has it ever been dropped 3) Are there any cracks in the screen. The tablet don't turn on and that's all that has to be said. You'll get another one in a couple days from them. In reality, there is no lie perpetuated. They don't ask if you have tried to fool with the hardware, root etc.
I'm not OK with lying to get a new one but from what I hear, you don't have to. I'm sure Amazon knows people are fooling with their tablets. If they were concerned with this being a reason to not get a replacement, it would be easy to add that as one of the warranty questions. As of a week ago, it was not.

[Q] Kindle in fastboot but PC claims device has malfunctioned?

Hey guys,
Bit of a problem here. I'm bricked and have to use my fastboot cable to restore my Kindle, but every time I plug in my normal USB cable in to the device after entering fastboot, I get a message on my PC telling me that Windows can't recognize my USB device because it has malfunctioned. At first I thought it was a driver thing, but I've tried it on three separate computers now, and no dice. Is there any way to fix this? Did I short out the micro USB port on my Kindle? And if I did, is it easy enough to replace it (preferably myself)?

Ouch, I think I have seen this before, not positive but I,m guessing your fastboot cable shorted the chip in charge of USB related stuff.

Crap. I've used this cable multiple times without any trouble (before this particular brick I used it and almost burned down the house, but my Kindle was okay). Is there any way of fixing this? Or am I better off investing in a new Kindle?
Perhaps this is why I'm told that I'm not allowed to have nice things...
Eh Idk if that's going to be fixable, i'd ask someone more knowledgeable like hashcode to make sure, just ask on the irc and you may get a quicker response.

I posted a thread on the Q&A, hoping someone would see it there, and I guess no one has an answer. No dice. I messaged Hashcode as well, but he never replied. What if, rather than replacing the chip, I tried swapping out whole motherboard? I found one on (of all places) Amazon for about $25. And if I could do this, would it be possible to extract anything from the sdcard off of the old motherboard? I read somewhere about this using Linux and an sdcard reader. I've got Ubuntu on my Windows 8 machine, and a reader wouldn't be to hard to find.
If just rather not have to spend more money on a new tablet if there's a chance I can fix the problem myself.

yea you should be able to retrieve your data from the chip, we have a pinout for the 7" 2012 now supposedly, i haven't seen many people attempt it yet but it should be doable, just use the directions for the otehr kindle but match it up to your pins on the motherboard. Should automatically mount in ubuntu. Heck you could technically fix it and try reflashing the bootloader as well and see if it solves the problem while your at it. Though i'm pretty sure hardware malfunction.

Okay, I guess my next step is to retrieve whatever I can from the sdcard from the current motherboard, and order another one from Amazon (I can swap out the motherboard, right? I mean, $25 for a part is better than $200-some for a new tablet). I'm assuming that once I get my hands on an sdcard reader, I just solder the wire to the metal strips or whatever in the reader slot.
Now I just have to find a Torx screwdriver to get the battery out of the way to reach the motherboard. Not sure how I'll replace the copper tape that's used for heat dispersion either.
By the way, is THIS the chip that's fried?
EDIT: Okay, images aren't showing up for whatever reason, but I'm assuming you're talking about the eMMC flash chip?
No I seriously doubt the emmc chip is fried or you'd probably be seeing an omap device in your device manager. I have no idea exactly what controls the microusb port on the kindle considering we can change its vid and pid at will. I assume there's a chip that is shorted I just don't know where, either that or your bootloader is malfunctioning.

Thanks, but this is for the 2013 version (soho). I've got the 2012 version (tate). Thanks anyway though. It does look like an interesting project.
Victory!!!
Sucess!!!
I ordered a new motherboard from here, pulled out the other one, and replaced it. It booted up like a charm!
One interesting find was that it came pre-loaded with Amazon OS 7.4.6 (unrooted of course).
I now have three issues:
->I have no audio (although this should be an easy fix)
->My power button doesn't funtion (this too should be an easy fix)
->My device is recognized on Amazon's servers as my SECOND Kindle Fire (but who cares what Amazon thinks?)
But hey, it's nice to see that $35 for parts will fix my Kindle, versus shelling out about $200-plus for a whole new tablet
You still going to hook the old board up to Linux to pull data off the sdcard? Also the boot0block could be useful.

Yeah I could probably do it. I might also do one for swapping out the motherboard as well, and post it here as well as on iFixit. It might be a while, because between a Memorial weekend vacation and getting my wisdom teeth yanked this weekend, I'll have a smaller paycheck and won't have money for an sdcard reader, but I will look into it. Guess its time to brush up on my soldering skills again
Still gotta find a way to fix audio output and my power button. Any idea if Mariomi's double-tap-to wake feature still works?

Any way to unbrick a 'hard-bricked' device?

I recently tried to downgrade my 5.3.3 (Amazon Fire 5th Gen) to 5.3.1, yes I didn't read the part about bricking it, so I have no one to blame but myself. However, I saw people could undo a soft brick but my device is hard-bricked (won't even turn on, no logo, nothing...) What can I do? Is there a bios battery in the motherboard like a computer that I can reset?
Thanks in advance.
