[Q] Condensation in Camera - Sony Xperia ZR

Hello, I bought this phone a week ago and I'm really pleased with it, I went from a Xperia Arc to this one and the difference is impressive, it is just blazing fast and one of the reasons I bought it was because of it being waterproof, so after I bought it I tested it a few times under running water and everything went perfectly.
But the thing is that today I decided to try it in the pool, recorded some videos, everything went perfectly but after we went out the pool and I left the telephone on the table, then I noticed it had water inside the camera, or some kind of moisture, I left it facing the sun with the battery off for a while and the moisture went away, this was on both cameras and got me really worried even tho it got out.
Will this be affecting my camera? Did I got a defective cellphone? Thanks in advance.

I think yes, also, check the litmus paper on the flap covers (in the sides), if it changed color then the water breaked through it, if not, check the litmus paper on the back(lower part of battery holder), and if still no color change, you really have a defective device which I think you should replace for warranty)

Can someone upload a picture of these litmus papers? Haven't seen Em in my phone...

No, these litmus paper indicators are only in Xperia Z. ZR does not have them. At least mine doesn't.

The following is Cut & Pasted from the Xperia ZR Test documents,
(Posted in "Sony Xperia ZR Service Documents (Mechanical)" Thread)
Have to say I can't see them on my ZR either (Haven't looked under the battery) .....
The Water Indicator is located as shown in these pictures.
1. The first is located in the Battery cavity (remove the Cover Battery and the Battery),
2. second one just inside the USB cap above the USB connector.
3. the third one is visible underneath the audio jack after the audio cap has been opened up.
All three can be observed without any major disassembly of the unit.
If affected (red color) - handle the phone according to the local directives.
If not affected by liquid, proceed to the ‘Pre-Test Preparation’ below.

I've this phone since 20th december 2013 and til now I'm to afraid to try it's waterproof due to all post i've found here and also in another forum from people in my country it looks like its 50:50 waterproof or non-waterproof. Sony... what the hell

I threw it in Sony's face today...hope i get it back soon.....!! till then i have to manage wirh a Lumia 710!!
What a weird coincidence I have just switched from an 710
To the point
My device does sometimes get a bit hot especially if more than a few wireless connectivity options are on.
This usually results in apps not running properly
If anyone else is having this problem
Accses what they will check first which is the sony factory service menu which can be accessed by putting *#*#7378423#*#* into the dial on the call app. Once in go to service test and go to test battery health this will indicate if there is a fault with the battery
And other options can indicate hardware faults that may cause this.
Other than that it sounds like Sony have had a miss on yours instead of a hit so yeh give it back
Hope this helped

BTW i already Sent it into Sony Service Last Saturday! still didn't get any news on my Phone! If i get the option between a Refund and a Replacement, I would definately get a Refund! I would get myself a Nexus 4 or something.

Hope i get a Solution!! Living off a Lumia 710 again now....thank god i didnt sell it or something! :good:

Your unit may be defective. But if you think you're going to avoid the heating problem with a Nexus 4... mate, I think you are wrong. The Nexus 4 has a well-known problem among users called "throttle" that our Xperia SP doesn't have (at least not mine)
Done!
Hello People,
I got my Phone back from Sony and now it's really cool....but it just warms up a bit when it's GPU is used alot..!!

Hahaha, you're correct.
That is the NFC antenna he removed.
Anyway, back on topic...
If you want your phone to stay cool, you will need to flash a different kernel and ROM.
Only then are you able to tweak your phone so it doesn't overheat again.
Downside is that you lost your warranty. Ah well, if it's broken, buy another phone.
Another thing, "extended warranty" is a joke. Never trust sales people that tell you to buy this extra package.
They will look for any excuse not to pay you if something bad happens to your phone.

Is your phone too big guys (Be honest)

Hey guys I'm about for a buying new phone!
Only I just can't decide whether I should take Z(probably ZL) or Xperia T.
Of course Z(L) is better but I just wanted to ask is it a too big phone for you.
(I currently have only 3.5inch Xperia Miro)

Z is big. But you get used to it. I have no troubles handling it.
T feels chunkier.
Thanks but no not that...I have no troubles handling 10.1inch tablet xD
Does Z fit in your pocket? Can you take it every day to school or so... Can you take it when you go for a walk?
PS: I don't take purse or something with me.

I mean is not that big to carry a separate bag with you.
I always wear jeans, slim fit jeans, and chinos. Never had trouble fitting my phone in my left side pocket. It doesn't bother when walking.
Yup, I usually take my phone in my back pocket. And wear jeans.
I think I am even going for the smaller ZL or T.
Official Sony site:
ZL - 131.6 x 69.3 x 9.8 mm
T - 129.4 x 67.3 x 9.35-10.45 mm
Wow not so big difference. I suppose the bezel can't be too small, right?

That's why I said the T feels chunkier. Even though is almost half inch smaller, it has quite a footprint. And I don't like the design of the T at all. I've had had all the flagships since the X10, but I skipped the T.

Good advice! Now I see that T is just a 2mm shorter and slimmer.
If I have money I will go with ZL thank you.
But I would love to see more opinions on this.

Actually I saw T in the store and one of my friends have it. I like T. Really good phone to me. Like even the design. But I agree if you already have S why upgrade.
I saw also Z, but I never saw ZL. That's why I am asking. And it is hard to see from the store (Z) thought I would ask somebody here who already has it.
I really don't understand people, I came from the Galaxy Note N7000, which is bigger then the Xperia Z and even that fit without too many problems in my jeans pocket. People are to scared of the size when they see it, but once you've tried it you'll see that it's not that bad at all. Since the Galaxy Note fit in my jeans pocket without to many problems I won't even have to answer whether the XZ is to big or not.

Its perfect size tbh and I was coming from a 4s The size really isn't that big once you start using it you would start to think how did you live with such a small screen beforehand. It fits perfectly fine in my pocket so no problems here
Xperia Z Vanilla
The xperia z size is fine it actually early fits in to pockets never an issue.

PS: I am limited to 8 thanks per day, sorry I can't say thanks anymore xD
After saying for a long time that 5" is too big for a "mobile" Phone and selling my Arc so I could buy the Ray because I craved the compactness, I was going to wait to see what else Sony could come up with in terms of compact power and size (still hoping for a "Mini Z"), but the Z is just so beautiful I had to get one. For the first week of use I contemplated sending it back, the difference between the Ray and the Z in the hand should be obvious to anyone, but I'm so glad I've stuck with it because now the transition period is over it now feels normal to hold and use.
5" is the absolute cut off for a mobile Phone though, anything bigger is in Tablet realms.
Bro dont worry you will adapt when i used to have galaxy spica 3.2" screen i bought xperia arc 4.2" phone it was too huge then i got htc one x 4.7" again was feeling uncomfortable then i bought note 2 which too felt uncomfortable intially but after one week they felt as if they are just perfect and z due to its design is second best device i ever used 1st always the one X due to its feel and sleeky design. Now when i hold one x i feel like i have a baby phone lol so just take it out of your mind and go forit initially it will take time but it will grow on you

Sharper Screen On Later Model

Hi Guys, got a G Flex when they first came out and have been really happy with it so when I needed a new work phone i bought another one.
The new one has REV 1 in the model number and is obviously a later serial number.
Side by side next to each other both set to normal and full brightness the new one is much sharper, everything the screen displays is sharper for some reason, the resolution is exactly the same though obviously so how is this possible?
The original unit is running Jelly Bean based OS and the new one updated to Kit Kat which is also strange as they are both D955 and the old unit always says its OS is up to date when I check?
Has the change in OS sharpened the screen or have they change the screen or processing on later models?
Though someone on here might have some answers.
Cheers

It's on the bar code in the bottom left hand corner of the box, mine is MEZ65407931(1.1)BL The (1.1) was a (1.0) on my original unit so I'm assuming the (1.1) indicates a hardware revision.
Either way I'm pleased as the screen is so much nicer and also has less to no image retention.
it might be placebo effect, but since the kitkat update, I dont have any where near as much of the screen retention problem that was so horrible on 4.2..Maybe there is a new graphics driver in 4.4..

Go to dialer and enter 3845#*955#
If you have another model try to change the last three numbers with your model. 3845#*xxx#
after go settings/version info/HW Version.
Mine is Rev1.
don't touch anything else inside there because you can damage your phone

ok thanks for the awnser.
I noticed the same thing when I got my replacement earlier this week. On the new one the screen looks better and has no image ghosting.
I'm on the latest update 6/18. When I'm on tapatalk the black background looks black now as before it was like a light black. Lol. It looks a tad sharper.

I bought my first Flex online but in order to get a deal on my 2nd Flex I had to return my 1st one. I didn't notice any ghosting on the first one but did on my 2nd one. After the 6-18 update I don't notice it but didn't really notice all that much. I'm very happy with the Flex especially the battery life and my Vest case/skin combo but I'm already wanting a new toy/phone.
To shoe her off... I got the Vest case for $20 instead of $60 on Ebay from Korea. The skin was free since I did a review on it.

Flex on a boat..Yikes! hehe Yea it's showing a little wear on the sides. Maybe I could clean it. Took me a day to finally decide to get a white skin. lol I was going to get red being a Ohio State fan but doesn't look like a true red. Also thought about getting brown. Skin is on sale and only $5.99.

[Hardware Mod] Increse signal strength

I noticed my signal strength is very poor from day 1, but it is generally on my workplace the signal quality is piss poor so I opened up the phone. For those who want to open it head to iFixit Nexus 5 teardown to open the back cover. It's simple really, if you have a guitar pick you can start opening from 3.5mm jack.
DISCLAIMER: I HELD NO RESPONSIBILITY OF DAMAGED IMPOSED FROM THIS MOD. SOME PEOPLE GET WORSE RESULT THAN WHAT I GET AND POTENTIAL TOTAL SIGNAL LOST.
IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HARDWARE IN GENERAL I STRONGLY ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM DOING THIS MOD.
Explanation of risks
kuroguy said:
Amateur radio operator/builder here. you can get away with using a random wire lenght for a receive only antenna. doing that with an antenna used for transmitting is a bad idea. if the antenna isn't designed to accept the frequency you are trying to transmit on, the signal will be reflected back from the antenna towards the finals (the transistors used to transmit the signal) and the RF energy is absorbed by them. this usually burns out the finals and I suspect that is what has happened to the cellular transmitters for those of you with no cellular connectivity after making this mod. Don't mess with the antenna, the one that comes with the phone is designed to minimize the standing wave ratio and ensure that the RF signal is transmitted out of the antenna instead of being reflected back at the finals and destroying them.

You gonna need a thin wire like the one you found on DC motor engine winding inside, such as pictured below:

Next locate the GSM antenna external port, I highlighted in yellow below (image courtesy of iFixit)
Next is very simple just put the wires in the holes and put a simple tape to ensure it won't move around. Put the other end of the wires near batteries or something wherever you fancy
So that's it, now at work I always gets full signal strength and my phone is noticeably cooler and batteries is anywhere from 10-25% more from the same usage. You can try it as it's very simple.
Will this have the same effect as it did on the Galaxy Nexus? Being that once you plug something into the external port, the internal one will cease to function? Meaning once you remove that wire your phone will have absolutely 0 signal no matter what you do?

Changing WiFi and GPS antenna will be also good,
I think WiFi is that left from battery. Anybody know where is GPS antenna hidden?
Do you have to have the wire in that tiny hole or does it just have to touch it?

I believes he says "wires" in his description. Its just two pieces of wire loosely intertwined.
Hum, I just try this "mod" but wasn't able to get it working. And now, surprise, "no signal", even after reboots.
Hope a reflash of /system will fix it

I'll check later to make a full backup & reset.

Double check to make sure none of the components came undone inside the phone. The internals are pretty delicate.
OP, I known it's common knowledge, but maybe a disclaimer on the top of the thread in the first post stating that this modification will void out your warranty and has the potential to render your phone useless if something goes wrong?

As I just removed the back cover there's no risk that components gets misplaced. I'll check this later.

Okay, after many tests here's my situation :
- GSM & Edge doesn't work (no signal)
- 3G & 4G seems to work proprely
- A /system, boot & radio reflash did'nt solved the problem
- A total reflash (on latest 4.4.4 stock iamge) did'nt solved the problem
Does anyone has an idea/solution for this problem ?
Thanks
OP can you post what type of wire and the length you used? I wanted to try it but seeing the issues @Charlus97 faced I wanted to make sure I did exactly what you did so I don't screw anything up.

【GUIDE】 How to make ANY PHONE Waterproof / NO CASE / NO NANOCOATING / VERY LOW PRICÉ

【GUIDE】 How to make ANY PHONE Waterproof / NO CASE / NO NANOCOATING / VERY LOW PRICÉ
Hello, everyone.
Now, i'm going to tell you, how to make ANY Phone / Tablet / Device water-resistant and Dustproof and also a Little bit Scratch/Damageproof/resistant.
Please read the Advices before trying this at home‼
No Nanocoating
No Case
Not Waterproof from beginning on
No Haox.
READ BEFORE DOING:
I don't want to say that because saying that súcks:
I don't take any responsibility for any kind of damage on your device.
You can tell me, if your device took damage and how/why but don#t blame me because of that!
You just need one small thing for that:

Téser
It costs very cheap and will work.
I did that with a Galaxy Pocket, Star and a Young 2 (the Young 2 died in 50 Seconds because of a big lack. )
You just need to stick it overall on the phone (Speaker, Charger Port, SD Card Slot and Cover and overall where Water goes in first.)
So good so far?
Then you glue all free places and push overall to avoid lacks where water can go in. The more Glue, the less lacks.
Did you get it?
It also makes less sense to Put Glue ON Glue because there will be less patches for lacks. Always Glue there, where many Glue Tapes Cross each other. That makes bigger sense to close more lacks.
This will only make your phone TEMPORARlY Water-Resistant. Don't overestimate it.
If you use more Glue, there will be less lacks / more waterproofitý.
WARNINGS:
If the Order of apps in the Menu Changes, Turn your phone off and stop exposing it to water
Don't blame me if you make a mistake yourself
If the Touchscreen's Reaction get's Worse, also switch your phone off!
And also stop, if bubbles come out of the phone.
If a bubble comes out, there's possibly a lack, where water is entering...
If the Internet/WiFi/Network/3G/4GLTÉ Connection gets unusually weak, pull the Phone out of the Water and Turn it off.
Also stop, if the phone behaves like unusually.
First try with an old and useless phone!
Saying this sucks, but i take no response for any damage.

2 Hours of Shower
I took the Galaxy Pocket (GT-S5300) 2 Hours with to the Shower (yes, i know 2 hours is very long but because it was so exciting :laugh nothing happened
And then i took the Galaxy Star (GT-S5280) into the Swimming Pool.
I went very deep underwater with the phone.
I also took some recordings (uploading/attaching comes later on ) and also nothing happened. (Water Temperature 27°C)
But i did put the Ýoung 2 into a pot, filled with Water (about 16ºC).
Because i was sooo exited, i did not recognize bubbles going in.
The Phone Stopped Recording Video (CameraMX)
The Touchscreen Stopped working.
2 Minutes later the Touchscreen started working again.
And then about 30 Seconds later the Screen Started Flickering...
But i managed to repair the phone

GUARANTEE LOSS Advice
Please stick Glue on the Indicators and over the Battery and also all the holes in the interieour of the Phone (if the Battery is Replacable), to make the phone more Water-Resistant and to AVOID GUARANTEE LOSS‼
This was such a good idea that I decided to do this not only to my phone but every electronic device in my home. And my car. I can't get in it now, but who cares?! IT'S WATERPROOF!
Wow... Amazing... I dropped my phone in the toilet and inadvertently flushed it!! I immediately went outside to the manhole, opened the cover and made my way down. What do I find among my dung? My phone!! And it survived!! Thank you soooo much you saved my life!

Looooooooooool rofl :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
In all seriousness though, I hope your intentions were satirical, @Hannah Stern.
If you want a waterproof phone, buy a waterproof phone, please, for humanity's sake.
Did my whole house.
It worked with a very old xperia arc!!! It's now my brother's phone to use on the pool and get underwater pics
I made it with a wide tape (kind of the same used for sealing boxes, but totally transparent), with only one layer of tape, so it doesn't get too bulky or obstruct camera lens. Then I applied glue with a small paintbrush in all the parts where tape overslapped (the glue was "boxer" or "matilda's super super glue" alike) and let it dry for 3 minutes, then applied again.
It works like a charm!!! No signs of water entering the phone even after 2 hours of pool time. The only downside is that you can't use headphones and everytime you charge the phone, you have to replace the tape that covers the usb port and apply the glue again, but in return you can get a waterproof phone at a very low cost!!!
Oviously, do this only with an old phone that is not your daily driver anymore, and that you do not care too much if it dies....
Thanks Hannah!!!
I just done it in my Kyocera Brigadier with hardened case and now my phone is over IP9000 certified bottom of the ocean-proof, explosion-proof that Micheal Bay cant make it go BOOM ), lava-proof, nokia-proof and also turn into a weapon when zombies strike )) *just kidding*
Thanks Hannah, now my M8 can swim ))
