I noticed my signal strength is very poor from day 1, but it is generally on my workplace the signal quality is piss poor so I opened up the phone. For those who want to open it head to iFixit Nexus 5 teardown to open the back cover. It's simple really, if you have a guitar pick you can start opening from 3.5mm jack.
DISCLAIMER: I HELD NO RESPONSIBILITY OF DAMAGED IMPOSED FROM THIS MOD. SOME PEOPLE GET WORSE RESULT THAN WHAT I GET AND POTENTIAL TOTAL SIGNAL LOST.
IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HARDWARE IN GENERAL I STRONGLY ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM DOING THIS MOD.
Explanation of risks
kuroguy said:
Amateur radio operator/builder here. you can get away with using a random wire lenght for a receive only antenna. doing that with an antenna used for transmitting is a bad idea. if the antenna isn't designed to accept the frequency you are trying to transmit on, the signal will be reflected back from the antenna towards the finals (the transistors used to transmit the signal) and the RF energy is absorbed by them. this usually burns out the finals and I suspect that is what has happened to the cellular transmitters for those of you with no cellular connectivity after making this mod. Don't mess with the antenna, the one that comes with the phone is designed to minimize the standing wave ratio and ensure that the RF signal is transmitted out of the antenna instead of being reflected back at the finals and destroying them.

You gonna need a thin wire like the one you found on DC motor engine winding inside, such as pictured below:

Next locate the GSM antenna external port, I highlighted in yellow below (image courtesy of iFixit)
Next is very simple just put the wires in the holes and put a simple tape to ensure it won't move around. Put the other end of the wires near batteries or something wherever you fancy
So that's it, now at work I always gets full signal strength and my phone is noticeably cooler and batteries is anywhere from 10-25% more from the same usage. You can try it as it's very simple.
Will this have the same effect as it did on the Galaxy Nexus? Being that once you plug something into the external port, the internal one will cease to function? Meaning once you remove that wire your phone will have absolutely 0 signal no matter what you do?

Changing WiFi and GPS antenna will be also good,
I think WiFi is that left from battery. Anybody know where is GPS antenna hidden?
Do you have to have the wire in that tiny hole or does it just have to touch it?

Hum, I just try this "mod" but wasn't able to get it working. And now, surprise, "no signal", even after reboots.
Hope a reflash of /system will fix it

Double check to make sure none of the components came undone inside the phone. The internals are pretty delicate.
OP, I known it's common knowledge, but maybe a disclaimer on the top of the thread in the first post stating that this modification will void out your warranty and has the potential to render your phone useless if something goes wrong?

Okay, after many tests here's my situation :
- GSM & Edge doesn't work (no signal)
- 3G & 4G seems to work proprely
- A /system, boot & radio reflash did'nt solved the problem
- A total reflash (on latest 4.4.4 stock iamge) did'nt solved the problem
Does anyone has an idea/solution for this problem ?
Thanks

introduction
I'm not kidding when I say UnBrickable. Modifying the OM pins means you can boot from USB, UART or MMC. This makes the phone quite UNBRICKABLE. There is nothing you can do software wise to prevent the device from booting into this mode. We are communicating with the unrewritable, efused IROM on the processor. It's the thing that makes the system on a chip into a "system on a chip".I am here now to tell you how to turn your Samsung Droid Charge into a KIT-S5PC110 development board. The KIT-S5PC110 development board is the platform used to develop our phones. There are some differences between this mod and the official development platform. The S5PC110 has a removable internal SDCard and no touchscreen.
Why would you want to do this? When you plug in the battery and connect it to the computer in "off" mode, it will become an S5PC110 board awaiting download of a program to run. This occurs long before anything like software or firmware enters the processor. This is the IROM of the device awaiting commands or a power on signal.
Because it is accepting a memory flash, anything may be put onto the device to perform a boot sequence..... Apple iOS (iPhone4 has the same processor) WP7 (mango supports this processor).
This will be a replacement for JTAG once we are able to make some firmware. How could it possibly be better then JTAG? Let's count the ways....
1. The only part required is a wire.
2. No shipping time.
3. No cost for a box to interface the computer.
4. Permanent.
5. Can be done as a preventive measure.
6. Gives the ability to test new Bootloaders temporarily.
7. Allows development of the entire system.
8. Removes worry about flashing and acts as a backup.
After performing this mod:
Remove the battery, replace the battery, your phone will connect to the computer via USB and await commands. Otherwise it will pretty much act like a Vibrant. See the Special Instructions section.
Modification
You will need:
1. Get someone who knows what they're doing with a soldering iron. If they don't know what flux is, then they don't know what they're doing. You can send me a PM(or email my [email protected]) or Connexion2005(aka MobileTechVideos.com). Note: I do not work for/with mobiletechvideos.com.
2. soldering iron - make sure it's sharp, if it's not sharp, then sharpen it, flux it and retin it.
3. flux
4. solder
5. tweezers
6. A relay (possibly- for the wire within to use as a bridge)
performing the modification:
1. tear apart your phone... Make sure to take out your SIM and external SDCard before you do this.
1A. Remove the screws.
1B. Separate the top case from the bottom case
1C. disconnect the display connector and free the camera and button assemblies from the case.
1D. Remove the mainboard
****VIDEO OR PICTURES NEEDED*****
2. Perform the mod as follows: Replace the xOM5 resistor from the top position to the bottom position.
*OR: remove the xOM5 resistor and jumper the center pads of xOM5 to the center pads of xOM0 or xOM3.

Thanks to ChauncyG for the device board.
3. reassemble the phone.
Special Instructions
This replaces the battery charging sequence. The normal battery charging sequence can be activated by holding power for 4 seconds.
To turn on the device, and operate in normal mode, you must hold the power button for 5 seconds.
3 button Download mode works as usual, however you must not have the S5PC110 drivers installed on the computer. You can use your custom rom menu option, adb reboot download, or use a terminal to "reboot download". 301Kohm Factory Mode JIGs work as well, but you must press power to bypass the S5PC110 mode.
To enter recovery mod, press and hold power for 3 seconds, then hold volume+ and volume- until the screen comes on then release.
Conclusion
Congratulations. You now have a device which works like a KIT-S5PC110 with an OM Value of 29. Now get to developing some serious custom software. See here for setting up the UART output http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235219

This is great so should i do this for the sake of doing it? What firmware is available for this right now? Should iphone firmware or wp7 supposed to just naturally work with this?

Awesome sauce! I, however, don't plan on doing this unless I do actually brick my phone. Kind of want to do it, just to do it, though. I like tinkering. I'm sure this will help a lot of folks out. Thanks!
Will this allow the use of uboot as a bootloader and if so wouldn't we be able to dual boot from both external and emmc?

Pretty much anything that works on the Hummingbird processor naturally will work on this. It opens the doors and will allow you to flex your e-balls while flashing anything you choose.
iOS and wp7 will take quite a bit of work to port as they are not open source.

Booting from MMC is possible, however, you'd have to open the device or switch a switch to turn on and off the xOM1 pin to boot from SD/eMMC. It won't boot from SD then OneNAND without hardware changes. It will dual boot USB though.
There is a member here in the Vibrant section, just left actually, name of ipetloudog. His Vibe died, and he said he would be willing to donate it for a good cause (i.e. this cause). Look him up, he may still be willing to donate his Vibe for this.

You marked 4 resistors to remove, you have to remove only one, third from left, and then jumper one of the middle pads (they are connected) to the VCC line (to the south, when looking at the picture).

Thank you, kind sir, for properly reading my question and giving me a proper answer, unlike some other people here.
So I guess it's hardware? Not much to do here?
Howdy howdy. Another Runkeeper user here. I find the GPS a lot better than my iPhone 4S for tracking accurately, but I digress. Few things to note:
1) Make sure your phone has a clear line of sight to the sky. If you can, put it in an arm band, (or like me) put it on a handlebar mount. That'll give you great results. A thigh pocket generally will give you odd results. Thighs of steel FTL.
2) Have you tried the Faster Fix app? A more accurate system clock will give you a quicker fix (and possibly a more accurate GPS result).
3) If I have to put my phone in my thigh pocket, try placing the phone screen towards your leg. My educated guess is that the GPS is closer to the back of the phone than the front.
4) Leave mobile data and wifi on. These are all used to try and cross-reference your location for when GPS is not being great.
-Soen
Hey Soen
My phone is in a light bag I carry around my upper body, usually it's on my back. 3G is on all the time, I used my old S3 like I use my Z and never had such problems. Haven't tried FasterFix or anything like it since GPS... well, works. But I'll give it a go, thanks for the tip.
If you flashed a custom Rom you probably received GPS data for that area. Eg mine was to source my GPS data from somewhere in Europe or something, yet I am in Australia.
Faster Fix fixed it up no problems
Before I pretty much could not get a a proper fix for any apps, and whether widgets kept thinking I was in weird cities/countries.
In your case it may be that you are close enough to get a fix, but a very inaccurate one.

Yes I can say that the GPS is not as accurate as any of my HTC phones, it is a little annoying with my in car GPS software, because it can switch 10km/h up and down at times as often as every second. Where this is annoying is that it now tells me very often that I am going over speed, when I am not.
I use software called GPS Status to help manage the a-GPS, and verify the satellites around me... Very good tool.

I am happy to say: much better. The phone tracked my route a bit more accurately, the lock was a bit more steady. All I did was fix stuff up with FasterFix and updated A-GPS data with GPS Test.
I will check up on this issue a bit more and report back. Thank you all for your suggestions btw this could be something to write Sony about.

I am not sure how much Sony give a toss to be honest, it seems that they are not listening to anyone about anything, it has been a long time since we have been released any new firmware, yet there are still soooooo many things that need to be sorted. This was always my concern moving to Sony, when I have had stupidly slow updates from them with any other Sony device I have owned. But I though I would give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, after the Statement that they wanted to be the top three this year for phone sales etc, I assumed this would mean that they would put a lot of effort in the development as all the other sucessful manufactures do.
HTC have already released a Camera quality improvement fix for the HTC One, which is not even fully available yet.
Sony;
WIFI drops and signal strength.
Cellular network drops and issues with 3G & 4G switching.
Camera picture quality low for 13MP due to intense noise reduction.
GPS.
There are more than this, but these are issues that are really annoying me.
We have a work around for the GPS, but the other three things mentioned need Sony to provide better drivers.
The issue persists. I still get erratic readings as if I'm cycling into buildings and riding my bike at 1552 km/h.
What a massive letdown.
I would return the phone. I have a ZL and had similar issues as well as a very slow lock. Tried many things including the factory reset with PC Companion at Sony's suggestion to no avail. Went to a Sony store and swapped handsets, and there is a huge difference. Now I have immediate lock on, and great accuracy.
Easier said than done, here they'd send the phone back and flash a new ROM, maybe, and say they weren't able to reproduce the error.

Dude, your amazing . All GPS in phones are hit and miss in the city
I had another issue up until a couple of days ago. According to GPS Test, the phone WOULD NOT for the life of it achieve GPS lock using GLONASS satellites. Nothing helped until I wiped A-GPS data. Now I get a lock inside my house in roughly 8 seconds within 5 meters since it's 9:30, and showers with thunderstorms are predicted around 11:00... means I don't have much time to test it today, so I'm off
EDIT: the issue persists. I will not accept any other explanation other than that the phone is messed up. Yesterday during cycling it seems I have crossed a four lane highly busy road for a second, and then returned onto the bike lane, whereas my friend with his Note 2 has no problems at all (and super precise readings).
As of yesterday, my XZ is for sale.

I threw it in Sony's face today...hope i get it back soon.....!! till then i have to manage wirh a Lumia 710!!
What a weird coincidence I have just switched from an 710
To the point
My device does sometimes get a bit hot especially if more than a few wireless connectivity options are on.
This usually results in apps not running properly
If anyone else is having this problem
Accses what they will check first which is the sony factory service menu which can be accessed by putting *#*#7378423#*#* into the dial on the call app. Once in go to service test and go to test battery health this will indicate if there is a fault with the battery
And other options can indicate hardware faults that may cause this.
Other than that it sounds like Sony have had a miss on yours instead of a hit so yeh give it back
Hope this helped

To the point
My device does sometimes get a bit hot especially if more than a few wireless connectivity options are on.
This usually results in apps not running properly
If anyone else is having this problem

Your unit may be defective. But if you think you're going to avoid the heating problem with a Nexus 4... mate, I think you are wrong. The Nexus 4 has a well-known problem among users called "throttle" that our Xperia SP doesn't have (at least not mine)
Done!
Hello People,
I got my Phone back from Sony and now it's really cool....but it just warms up a bit when it's GPU is used alot..!!

Hahaha, you're correct.
That is the NFC antenna he removed.
Anyway, back on topic...
If you want your phone to stay cool, you will need to flash a different kernel and ROM.
Only then are you able to tweak your phone so it doesn't overheat again.
Downside is that you lost your warranty. Ah well, if it's broken, buy another phone.
Another thing, "extended warranty" is a joke. Never trust sales people that tell you to buy this extra package.
They will look for any excuse not to pay you if something bad happens to your phone.

【GUIDE】 How to make ANY PHONE Waterproof / NO CASE / NO NANOCOATING / VERY LOW PRICÉ
Hello, everyone.
Now, i'm going to tell you, how to make ANY Phone / Tablet / Device water-resistant and Dustproof and also a Little bit Scratch/Damageproof/resistant.
Please read the Advices before trying this at home‼
No Nanocoating
No Case
Not Waterproof from beginning on
No Haox.
READ BEFORE DOING:
I don't want to say that because saying that súcks:
I don't take any responsibility for any kind of damage on your device.
You can tell me, if your device took damage and how/why but don#t blame me because of that!
You just need one small thing for that:

Téser
It costs very cheap and will work.
I did that with a Galaxy Pocket, Star and a Young 2 (the Young 2 died in 50 Seconds because of a big lack. )
You just need to stick it overall on the phone (Speaker, Charger Port, SD Card Slot and Cover and overall where Water goes in first.)
So good so far?
Then you glue all free places and push overall to avoid lacks where water can go in. The more Glue, the less lacks.
Did you get it?
It also makes less sense to Put Glue ON Glue because there will be less patches for lacks. Always Glue there, where many Glue Tapes Cross each other. That makes bigger sense to close more lacks.
This will only make your phone TEMPORARlY Water-Resistant. Don't overestimate it.
If you use more Glue, there will be less lacks / more waterproofitý.
WARNINGS:
If the Order of apps in the Menu Changes, Turn your phone off and stop exposing it to water
Don't blame me if you make a mistake yourself
If the Touchscreen's Reaction get's Worse, also switch your phone off!
And also stop, if bubbles come out of the phone.
If a bubble comes out, there's possibly a lack, where water is entering...
If the Internet/WiFi/Network/3G/4GLTÉ Connection gets unusually weak, pull the Phone out of the Water and Turn it off.
Also stop, if the phone behaves like unusually.
First try with an old and useless phone!
Saying this sucks, but i take no response for any damage.

2 Hours of Shower
I took the Galaxy Pocket (GT-S5300) 2 Hours with to the Shower (yes, i know 2 hours is very long but because it was so exciting :laugh nothing happened
And then i took the Galaxy Star (GT-S5280) into the Swimming Pool.
I went very deep underwater with the phone.
I also took some recordings (uploading/attaching comes later on ) and also nothing happened. (Water Temperature 27°C)
But i did put the Ýoung 2 into a pot, filled with Water (about 16ºC).
Because i was sooo exited, i did not recognize bubbles going in.
The Phone Stopped Recording Video (CameraMX)
The Touchscreen Stopped working.
2 Minutes later the Touchscreen started working again.
And then about 30 Seconds later the Screen Started Flickering...
But i managed to repair the phone

GUARANTEE LOSS Advice
Please stick Glue on the Indicators and over the Battery and also all the holes in the interieour of the Phone (if the Battery is Replacable), to make the phone more Water-Resistant and to AVOID GUARANTEE LOSS‼
This was such a good idea that I decided to do this not only to my phone but every electronic device in my home. And my car. I can't get in it now, but who cares?! IT'S WATERPROOF!
Wow... Amazing... I dropped my phone in the toilet and inadvertently flushed it!! I immediately went outside to the manhole, opened the cover and made my way down. What do I find among my dung? My phone!! And it survived!! Thank you soooo much you saved my life!

In all seriousness though, I hope your intentions were satirical, @Hannah Stern.
If you want a waterproof phone, buy a waterproof phone, please, for humanity's sake.
Did my whole house.
It worked with a very old xperia arc!!! It's now my brother's phone to use on the pool and get underwater pics
I made it with a wide tape (kind of the same used for sealing boxes, but totally transparent), with only one layer of tape, so it doesn't get too bulky or obstruct camera lens. Then I applied glue with a small paintbrush in all the parts where tape overslapped (the glue was "boxer" or "matilda's super super glue" alike) and let it dry for 3 minutes, then applied again.
It works like a charm!!! No signs of water entering the phone even after 2 hours of pool time. The only downside is that you can't use headphones and everytime you charge the phone, you have to replace the tape that covers the usb port and apply the glue again, but in return you can get a waterproof phone at a very low cost!!!
Oviously, do this only with an old phone that is not your daily driver anymore, and that you do not care too much if it dies....
Thanks Hannah!!!
I just done it in my Kyocera Brigadier with hardened case and now my phone is over IP9000 certified bottom of the ocean-proof, explosion-proof that Micheal Bay cant make it go BOOM ), lava-proof, nokia-proof and also turn into a weapon when zombies strike )) *just kidding*
Thanks Hannah, now my M8 can swim ))

I don't notice the problem in real use, but many people do, samsung should recall all unites and fix this.
I remember this diagnostic tool is not appropriate for some reason. Download Touch Screen Test from Play Store and do the test again. Also, the latest firmware update BUA5 has been reported to fix the issue completely, which my phone hasn't received yet (unlocked on Verizon).

The touch screen test app does not show any problems, only if you swipe fast, but anyway, looks like a shady fix

? it is valid, it recognizes the ghost touching tf
I think you're suppose to follow the rectangles and make an "X"; if those register after being touched it's working correctly.
If you have an after market screen protector this may screw it up.
If you're inadvertently touching the screen that can screw it up.
Try increasing or decreasing touch sensitivity.
Try enabling accidental touch protection if that's an option.
Clear the system cache on the boot menu.
Try a hard reboot (not reset!!!).

the thing is it's probably happening to more people because they ****ed the phone with cheap components
the fix they promise just hides the problem away in the touch screen test app
that's why im angry
I'm on the latest BUA5 and for me it didn't fix the issue. Maybe it did make it a little bit better, but it is not completely gone. For me the touch issue is so small, I don't mind. I can only encounter the problem in the test app.
My guess is that many who think it is fixed, didn't swipe fingers fast, close or long enough. The problem won't occur if you swipe on the edges of the screen and it won't occur immediately, only after some time.
OR then it is really fixed for some, but then I guess I'm not the lucky one

Samsung will substitute components and smaller chipsets as needed during a production run.
Result unpredictable behavior after firmware updates because the firmware wasn't configured for the substitute chipset.
It's so bad Sammy doesn't know what chipsets were used without physically examining the unit.
After which they can correct the firmware... presumably or replace said component.
Send it in or get a replacement if you believe you have a major issue.
Welcome to Sammy's beta hardware test program

You are right. Swiping up and down alternately with two fingers close enough still creates ghost touches, far apart no issue. Although the fix may not be perfect, in day to day use I'd say the fix is good enough, because we hold a phone in a landscape mode when playing games, and two thumbs are far apart from each other.

I have the 10+. If Samsung repairs it they will send it back with the original seals. It's not rocket science.
In time after enough have been seen Samsung may well include a firmware patch for the effected units. Lol, after over a year and a half Samsung finally has the Buds+ firmware dialed in... they sound great, now.
You could also demand a full refund.
If I could get one out of Sony... anything is possible
Rule #1 no free rides.

Imagine paying so much for the buds + and only after a year the firmware is right
They have been putting out firmware updates, and the problem has been getting fixed, but not 100%
Maybe one UI 3.1 does the trick
