[Q] USB Hub - Asus Transformer TF701

I bought a small USB 3.0 4 port hub. I miss the second usb port from my TF101 dock. I can only get one connected device recognized. If I try to connect my mobile mouse it not only does not work but I lose the touch pad cursor as well. I tried 2 different hubs (although they are so similiar I guess they have the same chipset).
Can someone try a usb hub on their 701? The ones I used powered by USB only, no AC charger. I am wondering if this is something that can be addressed by a fix after I root. I would really like to have more than one usb port available.

I'll try mine out tomorrow. I'm guessing that it can't supply enough power to the hub though.

That is the most likely explanation although they advertise these for use with tablets. Thanks

Update
I initially thought this was a driver issue. Now I think the USB host/port is underpowered. I tried another mobile hub and also could not get more than one device recognized. Then I tried a 120 gig laptop drive that I have housed in an external USB case. This always worked fine on my TF101 but will not work on my new TF701.
I do not know if I have a bad dock or if this is standard sub par performance for this device. Could someone please try connecting a couple devices with a self powered hub or a high power device like an external mechanical hard drive?
Thanks

I have used 2 diferent mechanical harddrives and they both worked fine but when they were plugged into the dock i lost use of the touchpad. When the harddrives were removed i had to un-dock the tablet and reconnect it to make the touch pad work. This never happened with my TF201. At least the transfer from/to harddrives is now faster.
Hope this helps

That just should not happen. I'm guessing that these usb hosts are underpowered and not up to specs.
I just read a thread here about TF701 orders being held in the Netherlands due to these built issues. I saw this when the TF101 came out also. I contacted ASUS today and they acknowledge that my problem sounds like an underpowered usb. I am about to send back my 2nd dock. I will try a third but if I get another defective product I may give it up with the Transformer.

I tried an external harddrive as well and can confirm the issue: plugging in the harddrive works, but the touchpad stops working (although the harddrive still works). However, after removing and replugging the tablet into the dock, both harddrive and touchpad work flawlessly. Sounds like a bug to me, not a hardware issue.

I'll play with with that when I get home next week. I'll see if disconnecting/connecting helps with a hub recognizing more then I've device also.
Thanks

This is my fourth TF701 but on all of them an external HD worked flawless.

I have used a WD Passport with USB3, everything worked. (Yes, my dock is bad quality with disconnects and mechanical instability)

So I would guess it is my dock that housed the usb host and has the problem. I will return and replace it.
Thanks

Let me know if the new one works - the behaviour is kind of strange for a hardware issue...

I tried it with the new dock. I still can only get one device on the hub recognized. This must be an issue with the docks. I forgot to try my portable hd and will check that out later.

I also ordered a USB hub, the small issue with the touchpad remains. I can get to work only one flash drive at once, althouth a flash drive and a USB mouse work at the same time. I therefore assume that both the touchpad issue as well as the fact that only one storage device works at the same time are somehow software related?!?

I can use the external hdd with the touchpads
connecting a second mass storage device (codemeter acts as such) leads to loss of first mass storage device (external hdd).
upon removal of the second mass storage device, the first mass storage device, which was lost, reappears, even without reconnect.
conclusion:
this is a software related misbehaviour. no suggestion of defective hardware apparent.

Good and usefull info.
Probably the Asus frimware can only handle one mass storage device at a time when connected. for some part it is understandable because you limit the amount of data it must handle, but from the other side when you offer a USB3 connection it should be capable to handle multiple mass storage devices.

I'm coming from a TF101 that had 2 USB ports on the dock. That is why I purchased the mobile hub. This is not a deal breaker for me but I assume that this behaviour does not meet the standard specs for USB host.
Thank you all for your good testing and input. Now I know I do not have to get a 4th dock replacement! (at least not for this issue at this time)

I'd say it's a bad script, because they didn't think of connecting two msds.

Did someone try if the tf701 supports LAN adapters as the other transformer tablets? The one in my USB3 hub is not recognized... I know it's pretty much nonsense, but this feature would be cool somehow

[Q] So what can I do with USB support?

Forgive me if a stupid question but the new rage going on is the new USB support for our NCs, what exactly can I do with that functionality now? Examples would be nice. Is it just simple stuff like keyboards, etc?
All of this is unconfirmed, but what I've seen mentioned includes webcams and game controllers in addition to keyboards/mice.
mass storage devices will work as well if you have an external power source
Another stupid question from my side:
How WILL this USB connectivity work? Meaning we connect any USB enabled device to the micro-USB port of the nook from which the charger connects?
That would be cool since that would enable USB keyboards to work with the nook..

And many USB thumb drives work without any external power at all. Not all of them, but an older 2GB of mine works perfectly (especially with the vold file modified so that mass storage devices auto mount)

Would you mind sharing your vold line? Does it work regardless of the sdx partition actually mounted? (In other word, is it wildcarded for any type of flash, or just for your particular drive)

Is there a Keyboard/Mouse that will work with the Nook that anyone is using today? Of course, I don't understand how a mouse would work because there is no pointer/cursor in Android is there?
I'd love to be able to have a mouse/keyboard and not have to lug my laptop around on business trips but just use the Nook instead. May be wishful thinking I suppose.

Depends on the mouse. If the mouse can run on 100mA, it will work with no hub (personally tested with a Logitech wireless).
Just wondering if anyone knows whether they've gotten the usb headphones with mic to work. I've been following that usb thread in development pretty closely (although I can't post there; not enough general posts, so I guess I'll have to start spamming), and it appears as though they are close, but I haven't seen a post definitely stating that it works. Seems as though they were getting some noise through the mic, but the rate was off. Too fast or too slow or something. Maybe someone knows?
Which Female to Female adapter to get?
I found some Female to Female adapters on Amazon, but they had mixed reviews. If you are using one successfully , I would appreciate more information about where to get it.

Same here. I bought one from ebay for $1.98 but what they sent did not match the description or picture so I killed the charge with AmEx.
As for webcam support, not working as far as I have been able to test. I can get the nook to recognize the cam but the apps do not see it. Have tried yahoo msgr, tango, ooVoo,fring, ect...
As for uses, mouse, keyboard,sd card reader, direct connection to DSLR's for photo transfer, flash drives.
As for flash drives, I have about 20 here from various mfr and only 1 will worrk without a powered hub but using a powered hub, everything works.

Usb host Mouse

Hi, I have just got a usb host cable and I works fine for my pen drive but had a few questions to ask.
Is it possible to connect (via usb) Another android phone and access the micro sd from it to transfer files. The HD2 in question charges itself via usb host but enabling mass storage does nothing on the note.
I have tried my gigabyte wireless mouse and logitech wireless keyboard and neither worked. I have a BT keyboard so only really bothered about the mouse tbh.
I'm on the. Latest rocketrom.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Note has native support for HID's like keyboards and mice via both Bluetooth and USB. However, when it comes to USB, the more basic the device, basically, the closer to true plug-n-play a device is, the more likely it is to work. Also, with regard to wireless keyboards and mice, depending on the power requirements of the tranceiver, those may or may not work either.
An interesting thing to point out is that USB hub's work fine. So if you have a powered USB hub, you could theoretically plug in a USB keyboard and mouse, and an external HDD (as long as it's in a compatible format!).

Hi
Have red around somewhere: On Android 2.3.5 the USB host function worked, but it was taken away on version 2.3.6. This is for the extended USB host functions. I have an OBD-adapter to connect with my cars computer and it needs this extended function. Likewise, there are Apps that can remote control digital cameras and also see "live view" from the camera.
I have 2.3.6 and USB pens are working and my compact camera work (in PC modus), I can read and copy files. When I try my external hard drive it won't work. Haven't tried with external power to it. (An alternative could be to use an USB-hub with external power to it. Haven't tried this yet.
I have understood that when you get to version 3.1/3.2 the extended USB host functions will work again, and also the ICS version 4.0. I'm excitingly waiting for an upgrade...
I have the original USB-adapter from Samsung
Not all USB pens or hard drives will be supported, as earlier mentioned...

How to power 1 terabyte external usb drive

I recently got a 1 terabyte usb 3 external hard drive. I want to use it directly on my note2 via otg to backup my files and free up space on my device and microsd while I am away from my pc. I noticed my battery gets discharged really fast from powering up the drive. I was wondering how I could provide an external power to the drive or the note 2 itself while the drive is connected to the note2 via otg. Thanks guys.

I've had a couple if external hard drives that have two usb connectors. I read somewhere that once the drive starts and spins up, you really only need one connection.
If thats the case, and you do have a two usb connection cable for that drive, you could maybe connect one to another power source (computer usb, wall adapter, etc).
Don't know if any of that will actually work, but the theory sounds good in my head.

I have an external hard drive also but my Note 2 doesn't recognize it as a memory drive. It's powered by an ac adaptor so I dont see why it won't establish a connection.

Same issue for me. It says blank memory device. I have a thermaltake 2 bay drive that is powered. I guess that it has to supply its own buss voltage. So much for the 2TB drive mounting.
Or you can get a powered USB Hub. So that the hub powers the HD and not your phone.

Also pnce you get it powered up you might need to format it. I am unsure if this phone can read ntsf. Everything of mine is formatted to fat32 and exfat. So if you get it powered and it shows no memory or something it might be the format.

I solved this issue by using Paragon exfat ntfs hfs from playstore.
The solution that comes to my mind is to just connect both devices to a computer, laptop, or netbook, open 2 windows and drag n drop.
But that powered hub does look like something fun to play with.

[Q] how to connect usb hdd 500gb to z1

Do you have a SATA HDD or an HDD with an eSATA Port?
If you have a SATA HDD you could try using an external USB Case and connect it over USB-OTG. If you have the latter it won't work without additional hardware (e.g. a Notebook with eSATA Port)

It should work...
One questions first:
What Filesystem is present on that HDD? Preferable would be ExFAT. NTFS _could_ work, but i don't know that for sure.
Second:
After you've connected the HDD to your device via USB-OTG cable you should go to Settings --> Storage. Down at the bottom should be a point wich let's you mount your external USB device. After that, it should be available for r/w.

actually i tried with our data cable which we use for connect mobile to lappy not usb otg if it must usb otg i will buy new and try :good:
how'd you manage to do that? should'nt be possible through different genders on the connectors...
The only way i can imagine to connect those two devices without messing with the connector is a NAS-Storage. Those are Harddisks available from IP Networks (e.g. Western Digital MyBook).
Those devices have the proper port to connect your smartphone with itself. Well atleast physically.
Those ports on NASes are for output only (mainly). You can connect a printer to make the printer capable of networking. But connecting a smartphone on that port won't work since it isn't designed for such things. All you could do is mount your internal Storage as Mass Storage over USB (not MTP) and use your smartphone as network share. But browsing through the files on the HDD will still not work because of a lack of connection between the real harddisk and the usb port.
You must also connect an external.power source, the USB otg doesn't give enough cureemt to power ir up.

Free option is flashing doom kernel with boosted power output of the USB port. That COULD work, but it doesn't have to. Make sure you're using passive USB connectors that you're using. Ergo - it's just a regular USB cable and no additional software needs to be installed.
Try the USB otg helper from Google play too. It might also fix it.

Dex and 2TB HDD?

I have just started using the DeX as my daily driver. However the problem that I'm facing is when connecting my NTFS 2TB Portable HDD.
My DeX setup is connecting to 24" monitor using this UGREEN dongle, I use a wired Logitech Keyboard and MX Anywhere Mouse.
I have installed this app to help with NTFS. And when I connect the HDD directly to the phone via the OTG dongle it works fine, take time to show in the app but it does. But when I connect it to the UGREEN dongle, the app opens up and notifies me and asks for permission, the minute I click on allow, my monitor will go black and the HDD will make a clicking sound. I have to disconnect the HDD and the dongle, reconnect the dongle to make DeX work again.
I thought maybe my third party dongle didn't have enough juice to support the 2TB HDD so I went to my local Samsung store and tried on their DeX Station, same thing only difference was that the screen did not go black but the HDD made the clicking noise. The sales rep at the Samsung store told me that DeX only supports 512GB because their phone supports max of 512gb SD card.
What am I doing wrong? Or is 2TB just too much?

lol that dosent make sense to me.
what does is probably the power draw from the usb ports might be too much. let me test with different adapters i have that provide power to the HDD.
also the file system might be the issue even if you have the correct libs. try formating to extfat.
heres the proof that the phone can do at least 2tb.
i used a 3.5 regular hdd and sata to usb 3 powered adapter plugged into a usb c multireader adapter that was also powered externally.
i bought and installed paragon software because my 1tb drive appeared right away but not my 2tb. first was gpt extfat and the other gpt ntfs .
i have the latest dex station with me also and can test but i expect it to work since it did on a crappy usb c multi reader.
and here is the proof than an official dex station can also read it.
i have 8 tb and 16tb drives but im lazy. so 2 tb will have to do.

Yes but all those are powered HDDs. For me a powered 3tb and 5tb works perfectly well.
The issue is with the 2tb. Like I said when I connect it to my phone via the OTG adapter it works fine but not with the dongle.
I thought it was an issue with my dongle since it's not powered. So I headed to the Samsung store and tried on their Dex Station but it didn't work. Which is strange because the Dex Station is powered.

I have a 500gb portable HDD as well which also didn't work. I formatted it to exFAT. What are the chances that the same drive will work on exFAT?
Wouldn't it still require the same amount of power?
