Hi everyone,
Okay this might be a dumb question but I'm going to ask. Is there a way to remotely enable/activate the GPS and WiFi on my Android phone through a text message? I currently have GPS Tracker, Lost My Droid, Real Time GPS Tracker, Seek Droid, SMS GPS Enabler, and Where's My Droid installed on my phone to try and remotely turn on my GPS and WiFi. The problem is that yes sending the text to my phone and have the sound go off for Where's My Droid and Lost My Droid works, but the problem is having my GPS and WiFi turned off on my phone and not hearing because its not there. Yes, their are plenty of good apps that let you track your phone if your GPS is on, but they do not allow you to turn on GPS and WiFi through (SMS) text. So all and all, is there an app or apps that can do this for me, so I can do what I want to do?
Any information would be helpful, instructions would be better lol.
Thanks, II

I am the Dev of seek droid. Why leave the GPS disabled? It really does not conserve that much battery. Enabling the GPS does not leave the GPS turned on or even give the GPS any power unless the application you are using requests GPS.
Go pick up tasker from the market, and you can create a profile to have it enable gps whenever you get an sms.
You should probably have taker already anyways. It's a beast.

For some reason on my phone if I leave the GPS enabled it will drain out my battery in a few hours (8hrs). Where as if I turn GPS off, my battery has lasted up to almost 16hrs which is double and it is the only setting that I have changed.

Thanks for the advice pizz0wn3d. I will look into Tasker and see if it works for me and what I need it to do.
f you don't see the satellite dish in the notification bar then it really shouldn't use any battery, even if GPS is enabled. If you have location stuff turned on so the GPS is being used (i.e. you see the satellite dish in the notification bar) it will use battery.

Let me know and I can send you the profile I use. It makes the phone talk (alerting them that gps is being remotely enabled to track the phone down) and sends a confirmation text to the number that activates the gps. Then you can use "wheres my droid" or whatever else to track that S.O.B. down.

Thanks, pizz0wn3d that would be great! I looked up Tasker, it has a great many features that I can see paying for, but did not see the remote GPS activation/enabling in its description, on their website, or wiki. If you can, also send me the direction on how to set it up to do it. I might whined up missing something up with 190 options. But can always re-ROM if need be.

Bob, I do know this. For some reason my Map app starts up on its own and launches Latitude causing my GPS to activate and stay on. I don't want to uninstall Maps or Latitude because I do use them. Its easier to just turn off GPS then hassle with trying to find the source of the problem, in truth.

Well the way my profile is set up, whenever I receive a text with a certain phrase in it, it'll turn on the gps. Along with a few other things
It's not one of the advertised features because it's just one of the many things you can do with it.
I'll try to post a dropbox link in a few minutes.
Edit: This oughta work. Import this into tasker.
http://db.tt/D7u8eKw
It should be able to import after you paste the xml file into:
/sdcard/tasker/profiles
Then just hit menu -> profile data -> import one profile

If you use Latitude, it will be on all the time and cause battery drain because it needs update your location 24/7 even if Gmaps is not used. You don't have to uninstall it. Just make sure you log out of Latitude if you don't use it.

Alerting them sounds like a bad idea. I envision a battery pull or a phone being tossed out the window of a moving vehicle.

You don't reply to private messages do you pizz0wn3d? Questions are, Is there a site to download prebuilt profiles for Tasker? Second, What are the features to have your phone go to lock screen and ring remotely. Mine aren't working that I built.
Last questions for you, at least for now, lol

Oh sorry, normally I do but I haven't been on xda outside of the app in a few days so I haven't been able to look at my messages.
There is a wiki on the app that has a bunch of different profiles you can try out, as well as a couple of tutorials to get the hang of making profiles.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about going to the lock screen, as idk if it's possible to do that though tasker. I'll mess around and see what I can find.
What exactly are you trying to do that requires you to go to the lockscreen and play a ringtone?

Well for the lock screen; I was trying a remote lock down after I enabled the GPS tracking, so they could not turn it off, other then removing the battery of course. The only thing I can do right now is, set screen time out to 7sec. which is the smallest amount Tasker allows. The lock in Tasker is a joke because if you click on the notification bar at the top and select something you can bypass the lock, even in full screen mode.
As for the Ringtone/Ringer; I was trying to setup the phone to ring when people text me, similar to that of Where's My Droid, but with a twist. When I get their text, the assigned ringtone under their contacts or from file would play, that way I would know who it was without having to look at my phone every time. For this one in particular; do you or someone else know how Where's My Droids setup works? Then I can try to base it off of that. From what I can tell, it tricks the SMS into using the the ringer system and not the notification system. So a bait and switch from SMS Receiver to Cell Receiver. That's all I know for now.
Thanks for the link! I'll go through it to learn some more about Tasker.

I've never tried to set up a remote lock through tasker, I just had it set up to enable the GPS so I could lock+retrieve it via wheres my droid/lookout. But i have heard that the tasker lock down was pretty weak >.<
I actually never realized the phone didn't support custom tones for contacts outside of the calling ringtones. That actually sounds pretty difficult to implement via tasker. You would first have to disable notifications from your sms app so the tasker profile wouldn't just play a sound over that one. You'd also likely have to create a separate profile for each contact that you want to have a custom sms tone for.
I bought the Tasker app on a suggestion from a blog with no real knowledge of what to use it for. Since then I have read a number of things people use it for including one that I hadn't even thought about (connecting GPS to the app so that when you start the app, GPS gets turned on and when you close it GPS turns off...brilliant). Which lead me to wonder what else can I do with this app that I haven't thought of.
Anyone got anything specific? Doesn't have to over board fancy or anything, just normal every day tasks would be great to figure out.
I have mine set to play music at a certain volume when i plug in my headphones, that way it automactically plays and i dont go deaf lol

Also had it turn down notfication sounds, set screen timeout for 10 seconds, launch home dock, turn off notification and capacitive button lights when put into my home dock. I'm totally missing all this now with no docks for yet! Oh yeah, and one to create a nandroid using onandroid nightly at 2:30am every night and delete yesterdays backup since I flash a lot and don't want to wait for a backup every time.

Thinking of getting either the Galaxy gear or pebble smartwatch for my note 3 and I hope someone can clarify some questions I have:
1. You have to swipe left and right to toggle through the app selection right? Is there a way to disable some of the apps to make them not appear when you're swiping? I don't normally use voice memo, svoice or gallery.
2. When playing music and the display of the gear turns off and you activate it again, will music toggle show on the home page / lock screen or do you have to swipe left/right a few times again to get to music control?
3. I understand the gear syncs with your phone, does that mean all read sms via the gear will also be marked as read on the phone? After you read the sms on your gear does it disappear or can you still access everything through the watch?
4. Is it annoying to have to flick your wrist everytime you wanna check the time?
5. Can you customize which apps you want sound / vibrate notifications from? Like sound only when getting sms and vibrate only when receiving phone calls?
I'm planning on using the gear while out jogging to easily switch music tracks, do you think it can withstand heavy sweat and a little shock?
Thanks

1. Yes. You can use the gear manager to disable/enable which app you wanna show/hide
2. you have to swipe back again since the screen will turn on with default watch face
3. I use Chomp SMS so I can't comment on this. With Chomp, it won't dismiss on the phone even after you read on the watch or vice versa it won't dismiss on the watch even after you read on the phone.
4. Nope. it becomes second nature for me.
5. no you can't specify individual app control notification. You can choose sound, vibrate, both or silent.
Shock shouldn't be a problem. But sweat is the problem. What other members have done is wear a wrist sweat band and then wear the watch on top of it to protect.
Hope this helps.

1. Yes, the apps you see are favourites and you can configure in Gear Manager
2. There is a music control app on the Gear. You would need to change option in settings to display last viewed screen (instead of main screen)
3. Can't remember as currently using unsupported phone. I think the answer is yes though for some notifications
4. It comes naturally
5. No
I've found sweat doesn't affect mine, but others say it can get in the little hole behind the camera and fog up lens (it goes away and doesn't affect the physical camera)
Thank you for responding to my queries.
So there's no way to incorporate music control while playing music on the home screen /watch face?
I plan on getting the gear primarily to answer phone calls while driving and controlling media while working out. Very disappointing

As long as the phone is connected to the gear, any notifications it receives are archived (ie if you receive messages while not connected, the gear knows nothing about them). You can manually delete from archive
I think that notifications delete themselves after a while, as far as I can see they only seem to stay for around 2 days, which is fine

I imagine the best thing about owning a gear is keeping your phone in your pocket on silent and only bringing it out when you want to reply. Also, answering phone calls while driving and music control when your phone is docked to the speakers.
I've played around with my friend's pebble and its annoying that notifications aren't synced with your phone. You have to view them once on your watch and them dismiss them again on your phone.

there is no difference with the gear. You have to dismiss notifications on the gear (which can be a bit annoying as you have to go through each app's notifications and dismiss), and they won't be dismissed on the phone, you have to dismiss it on the phone as well.
Supposedly the gear does clear the phone emails and mark them as read if you use the native email app. I use Gmail and do have to clear the phone again after reading in the gear. Also the gear doesn't show the entire email. It shows most of it, then says to see the rest on the phone...

yeah, of course if you load an email app on the watch and have internet to the watch, then marking an email as read on the watch will mark it as read on the server, and mark it as read on any device, including your phone. but using the built in gear notifications, it won't do this.

no. smart delay is just to open up the app on your phone. So if you're looking at an SMS notification on your watch and you pick up your phone, Gear Manager will open up the SMS app on your phone for you. This in turn will clear the notification, but only as a side effect.

i never used smart relay, but i guess it will work, because wake-up gesture works on mine.
why is it better? because it is. i can use internet, have a custom layout for my apps (no more swiping across 7 pages to get to the voice memos or any other app). if i want to do something on my watch, i can do it within 3 seconds, literally.
i can start a direct dial to a predefined person.
i can record 60 seconds videos with custom rom.
i can secretly record both video and audio without time limit while keeping screen off (saves battery life).
i can set a countdown timer, or a stopwatch.
i can read ebooks.
i can sync my google keep notes
i can sync my grocery list
i can browse 9gag on my wrist
i can use calculator!
i can check and answer to my emails (by using gmail and google keyboard)
i can use google translate service (with both text and audio input)
i can check my bank account
i can use hangouts IM
i can play some simple games
i can have full calendar agenda
i can use full google maps
.. and way more.
now, what can you do with stock rom?
you can answer calls.
you can take 15 secs max videos.
you can reply to texts using s voice.
you can download stock apps available in samsung store (not a single one is worth your time)
you can pair it only with other samsung phones.
for me the answer is clear. if i can't put null on it, it goes back to store as a terrible smartwatch. it's capable of way more things than samsung officialy let you use..

i never used smart relay, but i guess it will work, because wake-up gesture works on mine.
why is it better? because it is. i can use internet, have a custom layout for my apps (no more swiping across 7 pages to get to the voice memos or any other app). if i want to do something on my watch, i can do it within 3 seconds, literally.
i can start a direct dial to a predefined person.
i can record 60 seconds videos with custom rom.
i can secretly record both video and audio without time limit while keeping screen off (saves battery life).
i can set a countdown timer, or a stopwatch.

Wow! I never thought about using it that way, impressive indeed especially direct call and text. While on null rom u can still receive SMS and call notifications like how you would on stock gear Rom right? Or does it replicate how a real phone does it?

i can receive sms and call notifications and also notifications from other apps (you choose what you want displayed).
there is no easy way to reply to texts though, there is a tabletsms but it doesn't work so fluently.
you do not loose any functionality when running custom rom. you just gain more.
Since we're not allowed to use our cell phones at work, I'm able to covertly use the internet with this thing.

I cant seem to get the watch to notify me about anything. I dont have any apps in the block list, the sound is on, not in theater mode. Not sure what else to do.
How do you customize the eco button? It would be much more convenient to put theater mode there than to have airplane mode, is that possible?
Wasnt this supposed to come with that little battery pack? I didnt have one in my box unless its super hidden.

First did you give android wear notications access?
Eco mode button can't be customized....yet, could see that changing in an update. I thought it came with a battery back too however it does not. It is optional. Haven't saw anything about price for the battery pack.
The recent Zenwatch Manager update gives you the ability to customize both the top and bottom buttons. They are accessed within settings on the watch.
I get no audible notifications. Someone told me I should. Android Wear permissions are all on. Only sound I get from The watch is when the phone rings.
I do get all the on screen notifications. I wish there was a clear all for them.

No native notification sounds on the watch (yet). Try Feel the Wear app. It detects notifications on the phone to trigger custom sounds and vibrations on the watch.

Go into the settings of the watch and make sure that under the bluetooth setting
that the "bluetooth audio" is enabled. I am almost certain that the bluetooth audio
in your phone is not enabled and that's the reason why you aren't getting any
audible notification sounds.
Also make sure that the alarm app in the watch is enabled and the alarm audio volume
is turned all the way up. ( you don't need to setup any alarms, just enable it in the audio
options under settings,
There are two apps you can download from the play store if you are interested in uploading
mp3 songs into your watch instead of streaming the music from your phone.
One is called WearMedia and the other is called Wear Music.
The WearMedia also has options for uploading pictures from
your phone to the watch too. Both are free apps.
Good luck, have a great day!
