Kit Kat and Band 4 LTE on Verizon - Moto X Q&A

So I really haven't had any luck yet trying to find an answer to this question. Does anyone know if the Kit Kat OTA on Verizon's Moto X enables Band 4 LTE?

I was informed my new device will be updatable to K.K. and will indeed have 4-Band LTE. Got a Moto X on its way, should be here monday [11/25th] though so meh.

Whoever it is up in my home town in Northern Montana at the local shop, I called in got a better deal than I could from costco, verizons website, or anywhere else. But I'm in Arizona at the moment, He said I'd pick it up here. But personally I'm not too worried whether I get it or not, I'm usually on WIFI anyways.

developer.verizon.com/content/vdc/en/verizon-devices/pages/mot_moto_x.html
Found this it list band 4 and 13
Sry I don't post much so I can't post outside links yes so you will need to copy paste.

Band 4 is already active at least as of the KitKat update which is what my Moto X is running. I was with a friend on T-Mobile and popped his SIM card into my X and it picked up their LTE immediately and T-Mobile's LTE is only on band 4 so it definitely is enabled. Just a matter now of Verizon rolling out the service.

ATT MotoX LTE Bands

Hi there...
I own a ATT MotoX and a Brazilian Vivo MotoX.
Supposedly they are the same model XT1058, but ATT and US Motorola and i think everywhere else (even so at iFixit teardown) is written that the American Moto X supports bands 2,4,5, and 17. Where the Brazilian MotoX works also with Band 7 (2600mhz... that is used in EU and South America).
I've been trying for sometime to test the ATT one with brazilian LTE, but was unsuccesful, until today when I flashed the 4.4 leaked from ATT on BOTH devices. And BOTH have LTE band 7 now.
Weird.
But Cool!
=)
I'm writing here only because i couldn't find ANY information about REAL usage of band 7 on ATT MotoX.
So anyone flying to europe or brazil, with the motoX (except T-mobile) will get coverage.
Very interesting information. Rogers Canada sells an XT1058 and they list that the phone supports band 7 LTE (2600 mhz). Rogers does use band 7 so it would make sense but the FCC(US) and IC(Canada) regulatory bodies do not list any 2600 mhz support for the XT1058. And as you mentioned the iFixit tear down shows no hardware for 2600 Mhz.
How are you able to verify 100% for certain they are using 2600 Mhz? I am assuming your provider has LTE only on 2600 Mhz?
Exactly.
And here is proof.
Vivo Brazil only works with Band 7 - 2600mhz
The weird thing is as I said before... It only started working after the 4.4 leak.
Maybe it was the modem image.
Maybe it was a problem with my LTE signal before. But to be sure, someone should try flashing the brazilian jellybean modem on a att/rogers phone.

Hi this is very interesting and important information for me especially who was looking to buy Moto X with custom back and front and that can work with the LTE Band 7 Network Provider s (e.g. Vodafone UK). Because only Roger or Brazil ones support the Band 7 but they are not customisable through Moto maker so it was a kind of disheartening me, but your experiment has certainly raised a joy and excitement and looks like dreams comes true to me. Could you please confirm if this is still the case then I can go ahead and buy the Motox from AT&T?
If possible could you provide me with the link to download the information /guide required to unlock and load the custom rom (link for that as well please) on the device, I guess i would need to add super user and , unlock the boot loader etc?
waiting eagerly for your reply and thanks in advace

You can't unlock the bootloader on an AT&T Moto X, it is not the one you want to buy.

Yes... you can't unlock the bootloader on the ATT MotoX...
But you don't need to.
My wife is using right now the ATT MotoX in Brazil with working LTE Band 7.
I'm not entirely sure if on Jellybean, as it comes from factory, it WOULD work with Band 7. But, since I've been testing it, from the "camera OTA" to kitkat, it does work. Without custom rom.
You will only need to SIM unlock it.
And that's pretty easy.
The only thing from MY experience is that the baseband/modem from the ATT drains more battery than the one from VIVO (brazilian operator).
Maybe because the VIVO one, has the modem optimized for the Band 7.
4.2.2 had band 7 disabled. There is no guarantee a future update won't disable it again, keep that in mind. The phone is not certified for band 7 use in the US. Hopefully what they did was enable for use when outside of the US. If you have a phone with an unlockable bootloader such as a Rogers phone you can always ensure it will be enabled and install firmware with no bloatware at all and have no branding on the outside of the phone.
So there are many options, guess its just best to know the positives/negatives of each.

ok thanks,me little confused, so if I buy MOTOX on AT&t by using the Moomaker and use it in UK (do i need it tosim unlock?) then I will be able to use the Band 7 in UK, but the phone should have installed the 4.4 kitkat ? so can i upgrade the jellybean which will com as a pre-installed to 4.4 leaked kitkat withoutout unlockng rthe boot loader?
Thanks in advance

JB 4.2.2 factory default may not support Band 7 @ ATT, but JB 4.2.2 with camera OTA does.
And that is still 4.2.2
I can confirm because I used it for a while, before att kitkat official build.
But yes, you are right. ATT may disable Band 7 again in a future update. And with locked boot loader, there will be nothing to do about it.

But you will need a SIM unlock code to make it work with you mobile operator in UK.

Well not directly answering your question, but i'm on an ATT Motomaker version with 4.4 and here in Hong Kong I do get LTE coverage (HK has 1800MHz and 2600MHz). Fairly sure the X doesn't have 1800MHz so this should mean that that phone has 2600Mhz active on 4.4.
Exactly. ATT has band 7 working on kitkat.
We are just warning that ATT may remove it someday.
I think (my opinion) that is safe to go with it.
But again, you won't be able to flash Brazilian or Canadian radio on it if they remove support. Because the boot loader is locked.

Moto x t-mobile us in uk network
i bought an t-mobile version of moto x and using it here in UK with vodafone. The top right icon shows 4G so not sure if that means that it is using LTE? The vodafone LTE only works on 2600 and 800 mhtz but if you look at the spcs of t-mobile version its no way matches, slightly confused. Looks like that after 4.4 kitkat motox supports all LTE bands, i know it sound stupid but here on this forum we can see that it is case for moto x at&t and then t-mobile(mine). Any expert views?

Isn't 4G used for HSPA+ in the US? That might be an explanation. You can check under Settings -> about phone -> status which connection is used.

Great, things like getting little clearer so if it does not have babd 7 then why does it show 4G on the top right corner i mean for example depending on the signal type available in a particular area the icon should also change e.g. 3G, H, E, G etc? And the wird thing is it shows hsdpa+ in the 'about phone' section despite the 4G icon display in status bar, am i missing something here?

It is a US Moto X. In the US they have the phone show 4G when using HSPA and 4Glte when it is connected via LTE.(They don't care what 4G is supposed to mean, they want everyone to think they are connected at a very high speed)

When is the Vz Moto X going to get the AWS band turned on?

Here in NYC the Vz network is way overloaded. Our data speeds have been reduced to garbage. One way to help relieve some of this burden is by tapping into LTE band 4. I know the Moto X is capable of doing this. Does anyone know if the upcoming Kitkat update will finally make this available?

Thanks. Fingers crossed. The NYC data overload situation is unbearable. I'm frequently getting data of 500-800kbps on LTE! The network is choked and we need this band to free things up a bit. I saw Verizon's CFO had an earnings call where he admitted this. Unbelievable.

[Q] LTE support in Dev Edition and T-Mobile version

My girlfriend and I picked up two Moto-Xs during the sale. I'm using Dev edition on Straight Talk AT&T. She's using the T-Mobile version on T-Mobile. Neither of us is getting LTE. I've been trying the Moto vs the Nexus-5 side by side thinking I'd sell one. The Nexus-5 picks up LTE just fine where the Moto is on HSPA+. I called Straight Talk and they weren't helpful. After reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569939 I expect that AT&T isn't recognizing the Dev edition as an LTE capable device. It's too bad because I really like the design of the Moto-X. Sure big screen on the Nexus-5 is an advantage, but the design, active notifications, and touchless controls on the Moto-X are very nice. I called Motorola and they will RMA the device for a refund.
When my girlfriend activated her Moto-X at T-Mobile the rep told her that she would not get high speed data (LTE) because she didn't buy the device from T-Mobile. Could this really be true? We don't have LTE at home, but she works in an area with LTE coverage. SHe said that she hasn't seen an LTE indicator on the phone.
The Moto-X is a very nice device. It's too bad that Motorola doesn't have clean carrier support for the T-Mobile/Dev Editions. The Nexus-5 works fine, and given that it covers many more LTE bands I'm confident it can be used on LTE networks going forward.
It's impossible to buy the device from Tmobile so that associate was full of it. Perhaps she hadn't noticed the lte icon, it's very small.
I don't quite know what to make of those signal numbers, but according to sensorly I reside in a fairly weak LTE area so these pics might be a guide, FWIW.
Sent from my XT1053 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for posting that screenshot. I suspect that she just hasn't noticed the indicator. I will check her phone when we are in an area with LTE coverage. I'm sure I'm not picking up LTE because I tested the download speed and checked the signal status. I am disappointed that Dev edition doesn't play nice with AT&T LTE.

I had the same issue and was frustrated. I can tell you, the post mentioned right above is true. I called ATT and Motorola neither could help me. The xda member untyped was the one who told me the issue was the way the phone is being registered to the network. ATT only seen the Moto X as a gsm device, due in part probably to the way Motorola has it listed internally or something, God knows. But he gave me an ATT Moto X imei and was able to register the device as lte. If it wasn't for that I would still be hspa+. Not sure if it's ATT with the corporate bs or Motorola not doing it right but that seems to be the issue.

No issues with LTE on my GFs xt1053 with Straight Talk. I had trouble getting LTE working my Dev Edition with AT&T, but after switching the Network Mode to LTE with Gravity Box it has worked great.
Do you have one of the new ST LTE sim cards? They only started selling them a few months ago. If you do, are you in one of the rare areas where AT&T uses Band 5? The xt1053 does not support LTE on 850mhz.
Problem Solved
After reading that others are getting LTE on AT&T with the TMo and Dev Ed versions I rechecked my settings and somehow Settings->Wireless& Networks>More->Mobile Networks>Network Mode was unset. There is a radio button with two options: Automatic, and 2G. Neither setting was selected. I selected Automatic and voila, LTE now works. Just for kicks I reset the phone to see what happens. When I check the setting Automatic is selected, but if I hit cancel, it deselects and then nothing is selected. This appears to be a software bug.
If you're having issues getting LTE check your NETWORK MODE settings and make sure it's set to Automatic.
Settings->Wireless& Networks>More->Mobile Networks>Network Mode: AUTOMATIC
Sorry all, I was mistaken. I was thinking Nexus 5. Moto X is clearly not available directly from T-mobile.

When I asked about it, someone said I had a new Sparks.
I'm pretty much in the dark on all this.
Will I still get the Kit Kat download?
Does Austin, TX broadcast the new LTE?
Do I have something better? Or just a gimmick?
Is there anything important to know?

When Sprint came out with 4.4.2.Kit Kat two days ago, everybody was posting that you needed MK2 software to get the download.

Accidental thanks. Anyways you will not get KitKat right now as this update is for the regular L720. There isndifferemt software for the T model. For example when we first noticed a MK5 software we regular phone people thought we would be able to use it but turns out we can't.
You will eventually get KitKat.
As far as Dallas having spark network, I don't know. I just know LA, San Fran, NYC, Chicago , and Miami were the first to start deployment.

Thanks, you've helped me a lot. Some guys in another forum were pushing me to manually update to MK2, glad I didn't.
I can wait for Kit Kat, at least now I know why it isn't pushing to me.
I can also wait for the tri band rollout. I get 30 Meg download on my home network.
Thanks again.

Thanks, There's a lot of good info.
Until the network is really ready - and it will vary by market - be careful what you wish for with Spark. Its been alluded to already, but in many cases this can be a step backward.

So wait.... I just bought this thing two weeks ago from the sprint store, and my model number is the 720, not 720T. Did they seriously give me one of the old versions even though the new ones have been out since mid December?

Yes. Because the stores have the regular ones still. And only online at sprint.com were you able to get the T model.

Looks fine. Also consider checking Swappa, that's where I got mine.

I use AT&T but the Pure Edition was made for T-Mobile/Net 10 primarily (even the firmware has T-Mobile in the version name), so it will be fine.

Just be aware that the XT1095 does not support Tmobile wifi calling. The phone supports Tmobile in every other way. I personally highly doubt that the 1095 will ever support Tmobile wifi calling.

appreciate the info. would be nice to have but shouldn't be a need as we have the unlimited everything plan.
I understand it also doesn't support 700 mhz Band 12 which is filling in many LTE gaps that TMO traditionally had in some arras

I went to Orlando a couple weeks ago and I bought one Sim of T-Mobile and always was on LTE and everything went just fine. My model is the XT1097 running 5.0.2 official , so I am guessing that both models, the ,1095 and 97 are fully compatible.
Moto's site had the moto x on sale for $299 recently you should see if they are still at that price.
BTW I own the pure and use it on tmobile no issues at all. I also called about band 12 and was told there are only like 6 cities currently that tmo uses band 12 on currently

I think it's more widespread than that, there's a thread on Howards forums that had results of people measuring it all over

Yeah, it's a bit more widespread but they aren't really using it for coverage expansion yet. They're primarily using it to improve building penetration.
If you typically hold onto your phone for 2+ years, you may want to consider buying a phone with Band 12 now. Otherwise you probably won't see much benefit for the next year or so.

Well Project Fi uses T-Mobile and Sprint's networks and their only device is the Nexus 6, which supports Band 12. I can't imagine that Google penned a deal with T-Mobile that gives them access only to some of their bands...
