Nexus 5 is the best smartphone I ever had but there are some things I don't like in it.
Cons:
1. Battery life is the first one. Switching from Note II to the Nexus 5 (thanks to Mike) really made a difference on the battery life.
2. Camera app is so slow and needs a lot of improvements. (Google is working on it)
3. This one is very minor but i will say it, are the glossy bezel on the white variant. I would prefer it to be just like on the black one.
Pros:
1. FAST, I mean really fast
2. Great support here on XDA :good:
3. Other then those 3 cons love this phone!
So guys and girls, what do you love/hate about your Nexus 5?
Cons:
Dust / dirt gets trapped around the bezel
Nexus X on back not coloured in
Pros:
Fast
Great battery life
Good multitasking
Nice feel

It gets amazing battery life for only being 2300. I'm getting around 5 hours heavy usage but I don't use syncing and I have strong lte and WiFi wherever I go.

Most of the time I use 3G and I had never reached 4 hours SOT....sync OFF and manual screen brightness around 15-25%.

Was gonna mention that exact thing it's soo damn annoying! ><
on my galaxy nexus if i erased by factory reset i still have my things on my internal storage ...i just found out (the Hard Way) that it is not the same on the nexus 5 when you do a factory reset on this bad boy it takes EVERTHING off .....but other than that the phone is great love it and glad to have one.......
Same as the guy above me, I had GNex and whenever I factory cleared it, the photos would stay on. Not so with Nexus 5, other then that it's an amazing device.

My two biggest complaints are the godawful screen and terrible speaker placement. If it had a better screen, I'd probably actually use it, but it's been pretty much collecting dust since I got it. Already filed an RMA with Google, I have to send it back by tomorrow if I'm going to, but I'm still undecided on what I'm going to do.
****ty camera and power/volume buttons directly opposite each other so I'm constantly changing the volume whenever I try to power on the screen

Love the screen
Love the GPS accuracy and speed
Love the speed and snappy feel of the phone
Love "Ok Google"
Like the battery
Like the build quality and overall asthetics
Sorta like the camera
Wish the speaker was a little louder
I could have bought a mint condition GS4 for less than what I paid for this phone. I feel like I made the right choice.
Pluses:
- Speed
- fluidity (the most fluid android device)
- Amazing display
- Great design
- Kitkat with Google launcher experience
Minuses:
- speaker
In between:
- Battery life is decent
- Camera is good enough

Agreed with you exactly. so I decided to just quote you. The speaker was expected to be worse than my HTC One, but I did expect it to be as good as a Samsung speaker.. My Wife's Note 2 is amazing, even though it is rear mounted. The speaker for the N5 seems limited.. I am not confident that any software update will make any dramatic improvements. For watching news clips or youtube, it'll do. But, it does seem cheap and dull.
After settling in, I like the fact that it is lighter and has a larger screen in roughly the same size as the One. Besides the speaker quality, which I can handle, I do not regret the change.
---------- Post added at 05:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:31 PM ----------
I get about ~30 hours with light usage for a few calls and checking news and few short videos on youtube. My signal is not the best when at work.. and it seems to make it worse to go back and forth from LTE to 3g alot.
I use an app that has worked well in my past devices called 2x battery. Does anyone else use battery mgnt apps? Is it better to leave KitKat alone and do apps like 2x battery only provide a placebo effect?
No Imessage.
Bad camera.
Twitter app feels weird.
No emoji support on native keyboard.
Everything else is amazing

@Shark_On_Land iMessage is so glitchy anyways, I'm always shocked when iFans try to brag about it. As for Twitter, take that up with them, that's not Android's fault. I am, however, assuming you came from an iPhone, so welcome to the bright side of the world
Otherwise, I can concur with the dust being annoying. I have the Spigen Slim Armor and every time I take it off I have to clean the dust out.
My only other question for @frarredo and @_MetalHead_ is how can you possibly complain about the screen quality? At 445 ppi and full 1080p I don't think you're even allowed to do that...
Really, really dislike the horrible battery life.
That is all.

Long story short, att messed up and ended up crediting me the price of my upgrade ($220) and pushing up my upgrade to eligible.
Ive had my eye on the one since it first was rumored but haven't heard much from people who actually have it.
Soo.... How is it? Should i use my newly obtained upgrade for this or should i wait it out some..

See what people think.
Excellent, I've not regretted choosing it - it's all I wanted.
I've upgraded from a Sammy S2. My primary phone usage is actually as a media player... A bit of on demand telly, but mostly listening to mp3s at work, and podcasts when I'm having a soak in the bath or lazing around at home.
The stereo speakers make such a difference, as does the Beats processing. It's a world away from the tinny output of the Samsung (which was in most other aspects an excellent phone, especially when I had Cyanogen on it to freshen it up)
Build quality is excellent, it really does feel great. Still not quite as impressive as an iPhone 4 though, but the best of the rest.
The screen is pin sharp. I'd like the automatic brightness to be biased a little brighter though (or customisable)
The Ui is truly butter smooth (Xperia z I tried in the shop was a lag-fest and very disappointing in comparison)
Blink feed is actually pretty good. I've always used Taptu for my news feed. Blink is allegedly going to be improved in the future.. It won't take much improvement to supplant Taptu entirely.
I've barely scratched the surface of Zoe, but it's impressed me so far. I've not even tried the Highlight options yet.
The camera seems to take good pictures, especially in low light... The flash hasn't kicked in for me yet!
Sense 5 is well designed, it looks good. I like the way the app drawer contents can be viewed in multiple ways and a custom view set up.
The phone must be powerful - it seems to play Real Racing 3 as well as my iPad - very impressive!
Battery life has seemed good, it doesn't eat battery on standby, but does during heavy use.. Which is understandable. I don't think I have enough experience to really say if it's good or bad compared to other phones, but its not died unexpectedly on me.
The phone seems stable... No crashes or lockups... Pretty good for such a new phone?
My gripes?
The phone got very, very hot when using Navigation whilst charging, with satellite image layer turned on.
I miss the menu button. and the Sammys physically clickable home button.. a bit.
I'd like the back and home buttons to be permanently lit, they don't show in bright or medium lighting.
I summary, yes I'd definitely buy this again if I had the choice
This is my third Android phone, previously owned Desire HD, One X (Tegra 3 - international version).
Only had One for two weeks, but so far really happy with it, no problems with build quality or functions.
Would go as far as to say it's the best phone I've owned.

i love my htc one. I picked it up a week ago. I've had iphones for the passed 4 years and didnt fancy the 5.
I went in to pick up an xperia z, but changed my mind for the one.
Ive used it more or less constantly since I got it, it has not crashed once, its fantastic.
I wasnt sure after ios for so long Id get on with it, but I love it. Il list why,
The speakers are fantastic, it really sounds great. The music player is impressive
The camera takes nice looking photos, the colours seem perfect. Theres alot to the camera I havent played with yet.
Everything is lag free, not just lag free, but impressively fast.
Blinkfeed is quite nice, although when I grab my phone to do something I end end up reading interesting news instead
I like android a lot more than I though I would.
Its an amazing phone. Hard to put it down. I looked through all the available phones, to me it was the winner, it is beautiful
The screen is just awesome.
Battery life has been good, it lasts as long as youd expect it to.

It rocks! Best phone I've had (coming from a Sensation)
Great battery life
Incredible camera
Beautiful design
Smooth & fast
There is a lot more to it but those are the winning points for me!
Best phone i've ever had.
One massive thing i've noticed with the camera is that you don't have to stay super still for shots. The shutter is so fast i think it's the first phone i've ever come across with a LED flash that actually competes with cameras that have a xenon flash.
I went out last night and each picture i took in a low lit pub was superb, genuinely amazed at the camera and its quickness.
The Boomsound is awesome, the phone is so fast, the camera is great and the screen is A class. Literally the best phone i've ever had and the best purchase i've made in a long time.
I am soooo chuffed i got this and not the Z ( just for its waterproof feature ) which id probably never use.
I think the only thing that worries me is the battery life, is it atleast in the 8hr range with moderate to heavy use?

Hmmm, tricky to say - I've not spent more than an hour in one go where I've used the phone heavily (constantly browsing / watching video / downloading apps etc), but haven't been within reach of a charger and a power point. My Sammy S2 often ate battery even when in standby so I bought extra chargers and distributed them around the house
However... my experience of checking the battery usage graph when it's unplugged is that
1) the line is nicely horizontal when in standby
2) the line doesn't resemble a cliff when the screen is on and I'm doing something.
If you want some rather more scientific results, best check the reviews... I recommend the Anandtech review here. It's a great piece of tech writing

The Xperia Z, a lag fest? Keep telling yourself that. Whatever makes you feel comfortable with your purchase.

Can't really fault it too be honest, still in a love/hate relationship with blinkfeed but other than that it's not skipped a bit, zero lag and everything is super smooth no matter what you throw at it.
Minor gripe is that htc really do need to put back in the option for long press back for menu.

I was actually going to buy an Xperia Z as the idea of a waterproof phone really appealed to me (listening to podcasts in the bath). But I was sorely disappointed when I tried the Z in a couple of shops the scrolling between home screens noticeably hiccuped. Now, sure, I don't know what the rest of the phone is like, but that was enough to put me off straight away. After all if the software isn't smooth on something like that, hopes aren't going to be high about the rest of the phone. The One is smooth everywhere.
I suspect the only person telling themselves anything to keep themselves happy with their purchase is you, but it's no skin off my nose...
Edit: in retrospect 'lag-fest' in my previous post was a poor choice of words - an exaggeration. But it did, to some extent, reflect my initial impression of the phone. Perhaps, to nick the tag line of a fast food outlet,"where's the butter?" would do the trick.
Are there differences between the variants? Like will there be att, sprint, tmobile, and international development or is it all gonna be together?
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2
There will be variants for different radio types (CDMA vs GSM) and LTE bands. The dev edition is aimed at ATT, and I don't think will fully support T-Mobile (I don't remember seeing 1700 in the specs). Best to check compatibility before buying.

Okay first off, I hate to start one of these threads, since it's basically an opinionated question. The GS4 is a no go for me, really don't like physical buttons. Currently looking for a gsm replacement on tmobile for my Galaxy Nexus. The only thing holding me back from getting the Xperia Z is the lack of a huge development community (and possibly reports of poor screen performance). Just curious if anyone who's used these devices could weigh in with their experience. I'd prefer to hear first hand accounts than continue to read expert reviews.
Thanks everyone!
Also, mods if this kind of post isn't allowed on xda anymore, my apologies, please remove it.

I went from a Galaxy Nexus to a Nexus 4, then had the same decision as you.
In terms of screen, the HTC One's has better viewing angles, no doubt about it, so does the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. In actual usage, on the latest firmware that improves blacks, it doesn't really matter that much. When actually looking at images, I compared the screens side by side and the Xperia Z seems to have a sharpness or vibrancy that the HTC One's doesnt. I really think the reviews overcook the view angle issue, it nearly put me off.
If you're used to the on screen buttons of AOSP, then I think the HTC one would be really irritating. That was a major factor for me, the quick swipe up from the middle launch of google now is also retained on the Xperia Z.
I found the HTC One difficult to hold, the edges seemed really sharp and hard, and the phone was quite slippery. At the same time the Xperia Z is also quite uncomfortable, but it doesn't feel like it is going to slide out of your hand. The power button placement is also much better on the Xperia Z.
The speaker is definitely much better on the HTC One, that said, the Nexus 4 is much better than the Galaxy Nexus, and the Xperia Z's speaker sounds better than the Nexus 4. So the Xperia Z isn't bad. I hold my phone with my left hand so it doesn't block the speaker, but if you hold your phone with your right hand and play music, then you will muffle the speaker.
I'm sure the HTC One is slightly faster due to newer processor but I don't think this matters that much, both will be fast.
I disliked sense 5 coming from AOSP, hated not being able to remove blink feed (find it really frustrating even though you can move it to a different home screen). The Sony customisations are actually an improvement on AOSP, things which frustrate me are fixed and also there are some other nice additions like location based wifi, bravia engine, wifi syncing with media go. The Sony Gallery called Albums is much much better than AOSP, the Walkman app is really good as is the Movies app. I never used built in apps before but I do here, I haven't installed MX Player.
The better camera in good light is undoubtedly the Xperia Z. I'm an amateur photographer (although street photographer so not much of a pixel peeper) and I'm impressed with the Xperia Z. Again the Nexus 4 is a step up from the Galaxy Nexus and the Xperia Z is much better. I haven't taken many pictures low light but I won't argue that the HTC One will provide better photos, the HTC also takes better videos and has Zoe which is cool (was one of the reasons the HTC One was attractive to me). Front camera is better on the Xperia Z than either the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4, the HTC One's is wider than the Z's if that matters to you.
The battery life I've been seeing has been pretty good, eg, if you're playing an mp4 film, I was seeing about 25% drop for 2 hours of watching the film. It's much better than the Nexus 4 which is a bit better than the Galaxy Nexus. Apparently the HTC One has a better battery life, I've never tested it though.
The Xperia Z has Micro SD slot which is great for music and films, I missed that owning the recent Nexus phones.
The last major point is the Xperia Z is water resistant, which is priceless, not because I want to take it under water but because it's nice having a life proof phone that you don't have to worry touching when you have wet hands or worried that rain will get into etc. It's a relaxing phone to own.
I only got the phone last weekend, the HTC One was the same price and I'm very happy with the phone and that I made the right choice for me.
Well thanks for that really in depth review. The more I think about it, the more I really want the Xperia. The water resistance factor hit me today while missing several calls walking through a downpour. I'm sure no matter what I end up getting, it will still be a step up from the gnex (which isn't actually in need of replacing, I'd just like something new). Hopefully T-Mobile releases the phone soon as the leaks suggest. I think I'd rather pay monthly for it than fork over the 500+ now. Thanks again

Agree completely with uberlaggydarwin.
Fact is, compared to most (non-Nexus perhaps) phones. Much more actual development gets done such as actual "fixes" for problems and not just hacky workarounds. We still have a way to go towards complete AOSP, theres one or two driver blobs still required for example, and a few minor bugs. But with (almost) every day that passes there are new platform-specific patches submitted to the CyanogenMod device repo on github and if I'm reading them correctly we have already, or will very soon, have a blob-less driver powering WiFi.
I must say, coming from a non-Nexus device it is a relief to see this much actual development and not just WinZip-wielding 10yr olds mashing together ROMs with 10,000 unnecessary hacks that make them laggy and/or unstable.
...a little torn on the screen though. As everyone is saying it is beautiful to look at from the front and probably (from this angle) the best mobile screen I have used, but again, as mentioned, the viewing angles are sub-optimal.
Too add my egg to the basket... I too am coming from a Gnex, which i loved. Been owning the XZ for roughly 3 months now. The screen angle thingy is definitely exaggerated. The colours and the viewing angles will take some getting used to, coming from an amoled screen, but the sharpness and clarity definitely make the transition much more pleasant.
The camera is undoubtedly much much better then on the Gnex, which was my only gripe with it. As to the HTC, I would wager the XZ one better for my taste, but thats only based on reviews, no hands on :/
The battery life has been stable enough for me, for my use... they both lasted about 2 days, Gnex maybe a bit better, HTC again cannot comment.
As far as the build quality... there have been some issues if u read the forms and from my case - the flap on the charging port doesn't wanna stay closed anymore In this case I would say HTC is better. It also prefers on your design preferences.
For me, leaving my Gnex behind for the XZ was actually not that hard of a step. U will have to get used to less development as compared to the nexus devices but that doesn't mean there isn't any. Free xperia team are awesome and CM is coming along nicely and with it a whole bunch of other roms, from PAC, PA, AOKP and independent AOSP projects, so no fear there
In any case, ull get a wonderfull new phone, whichever u choose and I hope u enjoy it!
I guess in terms of development, I definitely prefer actual dev work over tons of roms that are almost the same. Out of curiosity, any soft key mods yet? I have mine set to RECENTS HOME BACK and having been like this for almost 2 years I'd rather not have to relearn default (honestly minor issue I'm just being picky).
I would love to go to the store and compare them as someone has said, but I can't find anywhere local that sells the Xperia Z.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Even since the update the screen on the z has been great and really great to see in bright sunlight how I noticed today using it in sunlight yeah Germany didn't had the best weather as of late lol anyway I also don't think the viewing angle are a huge deal. I still see just fine what is on the display and actually Sony here in Berlin told me that the viewing angle is extra made a little darker so not everyone just can look and see stuff that easy on the screen if u don't want them too. Even so I think the viewing angle o's fine. Never had any issues seeing anything. Battery has been great as long as not being used with mobile data. All phones seem to get sucked dry in no time using Mobile data. At home with WiFi I can easily get 2 days.
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
Any idea what kind of battery life you guys get with mobile data enabled? I currently get about 16 hours with 2.5ish hours of screen on time with my gnex.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4 Beta
With my Gnex I get about the same as you. 2,5-3 hours of screen on time per day on auto-brightness. With my Xperia Z I can get 4-5 hours of screen time per day, depending on brightness (0%) and usage. With auto-brightness I get like 3 hours per day. But with light usage I can easily make it trough 2 days with my Z. My Gnex never lasts that long, even when I almost don't use it.

XZ and HTC one is neck and neck for me, I dont like sense one bit, havent touch the device but i had prior HTC devices and I can tell ya sense really suck other wise i think the HTC one won in every aspect. if you looking to go CM10.1 then i would go HTC one if you looking to stay stock i would choose XZ.
P.S I dont like the physical key either damn samsung for starting that in the S3
I am kind of new to android, and just got my Z. But one thing i can say is: Phoning while showering is so chilled.
Why haven't I thought of this?! You're a genius mate, gonna do that tonight! Lols

Battery life on data is not that good actually. Well I would say when listening music. Somehow the mediaserver always comes with on and even after turning off music it still drains the battery. Just a reboot fixes that. Listen barely to music on the phone anymore.

I'm having a blast with my Xperia Z.
Lots of fantastic ROMS in development...
Never noticed anything with regards to "viewing angles" i'm one of these freaks that tends to look at my phone head on.
With my own custom setup and settings i'm getting a full days use out of my phone.
I'm getting a whole day's battery life with heavy usage. Internet, Web, Whatsapp, Youtube, Camera etc.
Some people submerse their phones and have no problem, but i'm happy jsut treating my phone as resistant not proof.
I can reply to text messages in the bath with wet hands etc.
Build quality is fantastic. The best out at the minute i feel. Feels like a slab of glass! :fingers-crossed:
If you get one, buy a dock straight away, saves wear and tear on your charging ports.flaps.
I did that right away with my XZ when i bought it dock to charge, back n front glas protection this baby is amazing especially the White one my friend asked me to traid it for his Htc One,guess what, nop i said

I was lucky enough to get my Nexus 5 earlier today. Here are my first impressions. Please share yours!
My first thought was, when compared to my Nexus 4, is that the Nexus 5 is really light! Almost too light in my opinion.
The screen is beautiful. Its crisp and big. While the bezels are small, its not LG G2 small. Which disappointed me a bit. I'm pinning for an actual "edge to edge" display.
The soft rubber grip and slightly contoured back makes the phone feel better in the hand than my Nexus 4 did. Holding the phone almost feels like holding the Droid DNA a bit. But smaller.
The touch screen is a lot more sensitive than the Nexus 4. And the xda app likes to crash under kit Kat :-/
I'm annoyed at the IMEI sticker on the back. I feel like its going to peel away in a few days.
It doesn't torque in your hands like a cheap Samsung galaxy S3/S4. The build quality feels great. Almost like an HTC phone.
I would much rather have a metal band around the outside instead of rubberized plastic, but that's just me.
The Nexus 5 fits nicely on the Nexus 4 charging orb. When placing it on the orb, the bottom of the Nexus 5 rests on the countertop. No random phone slide offs like the Nexus 4,
Kit Kat is FAST! The keyboard is great. Probably due a lot to a much more responsive screen.
Most apps are working fine...but xda app crashes a lot. I suppose that's to be expected.
The battery life seems okay. I always am placing my phone on a charger, so I can't say I'm that great of a judge of battery life.
LTE performance with T-Mobile is the same between Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. I'm planning on switching back to sprint tomorrow....I had sprint for a few years. I went from the Evo LTE to the Nexus 4 on T-Mobile.
The camera...I'm a bit unimpressed so far. I was expecting a fast burst style. Like I had on my Evo LTE. Trying to take pictures of a 19 month old is tricky. I had a bunch of blurred photos.
Those are my day 1 impressions. What's everyone else's?

It's all different because everyone uses their phone differently. You can't judge how good your battery life will be based off of how someone else uses their phone. Wait for yours to come in and try it out.. it's the only way to figure it out for yourself :good:
Honestly, I am pretty disappointed Perhaps it is just my unit but the bottom left corner, where the phone rests naturally in my palm, is rather sharp and already I stopped playing with it because my hand got uncomfortable. Furthermore, I am really really missing the plastic buttons on the Nexus 4. They were smooth, soft and comfortable to rest my fingers on. These ceramic buttons have very sharp edges and the volume button, which I tend to rest my fingers on, feels really uncomfortable to me like it is going to cut my finger. These words are way too harsh but not inaccurate. Am I alone on this?

How? It seems pretty well stuck on there.. I don't want to start scratching at it to get it off only to find it wasn't supposed to be removed and leaves a nasty residue or even worse scratches the plastic.
Good to know about the camera. I have an 18 month and I was worried about the photo quality. Aosp ROMs always had blurry pics while TW camera on my Note 3 manages to get great shots with motion. I haven't taken my N5 out of the box yet, as I have someone wanting to trade me an LG G2 for it. This just confirms that I'm going to do that trade!

I had a couple app issues too. Taptu borked when I first installed and I had to reboot the phone.
It will take a few weeks for developers to get their app 4.4 compatible
I feel a little disappointed. I went from a Nexus 4 to this and I guess I'm having trouble seeing past the amazing that the jump from a GNEX to a Nexus 4 was. I like the bigger screen and the overall lightness. Battery is to be determine. I might be imagining this, but I feel the speakers on the Nexus 4 are much better. The back speaker is much louder and clear and the front is much clearer as well. Anyone else feel this way? Maybe I haven't spent enough time with the Nexus 5 to fully appreciate everything and maybe the introduction of custom roms will help.

Yea... but from what a lot of people are saying, the G2's camera isn't all rainbows and unicorns, either.
It may not be kit kat causing the crashes. XDA for me lately has been crashing all the time. It seems like some posts I can't click on with out it crashing while others work just fine. Just an FYI. And this is with a S4 running CM10.2

Please could you do a simple Touchscreen+Audio Latency test? So many reviews appearing around the web but none have tested Latency. Apparently the touchscreen on the Nexus 5 is pretty good so I hope it performs well.
For the people interested in the Nexus 5 for realtime music creation this is info we desperately need.
Anyway here is how to do a simple test:
Install a musical app, either drumming or keyboard.
Install a sound recording app,
Start recording audio and give the screen a good tap in the musical app, this way both the "tap" and resulting drum or keyboard sound will get recorded.
Open that saved .wav up in audacity then zoom in and observe the visual audio waveforms then measure the distance between the TAP and the sound actually playing using the timeline.
On my devices I was getting around 175ms if the particular music app used the "Sound Pool" class or 250+ if using "Audio Track" I'm running android 4.2. Anything under 100ms would start to be useful anything under 50ms would be amazing given googles track record in this area.

I did this...not sure if I did it correctly. I've uploaded a pic and the .wav file for you to look at. I'm not this granular about the sound/feedback! The .png pic file is a zoom in of the tap and the actual music playing.
Attached the .png of audacity (picked it best I could) and the .wav file in a .zip file (stupid xda attachment restrictions!)

For camera, I'd go Sony Xperia Z / Sony Xperia Z1 (mini) or HTC One.
My wife is still using an HTC Evo 4G LTE (HTC One X version for Sprint) and the pictures are really good off of that phone. She gets great pics of our 19 month old with that phone.
I don't know that LG G2 camera would beat any of the three phones i mentioned above.

Thanks so much!!, that has provided us with some very good info, your test was perfect, I could clearly hear and see the TAP's and the resulting notes. All you had to do it zoom in audacity to see the waveforms and make the measurements.
I also had a audio file from a Xperia Z1, so I put them head to head:
The results of total latency (Touchscreen+Audio) :
Xperia Z1 android 4.3 180ms
Nexus 5 android 4.4 102ms
One question, what application did you use? There are two popular ways to playback sound, one is OpenSL ES audio, another is SoundPool,
for OpenSL ES audio you can use the app called "Music Synthesizer for Android" it is made my someone working at Google they have made all the optimizations to playback sound as fast as possible, or you could try my app haha: "Tablet Drums" at the moment I'm using "SoundPool" I will swap to OpenSL ES audio too if the results are better.
Anyway thanks very much the results are good enough to persuade me to purchase a nexus 5 too.
Just got the phone today and the experience is not good so far... Came from the N4 and I do think this is a let down.
1. The back sticker? Seriously, Google?
2. The icons are so big. Maybe its normal for all 5" inch phones, but looks not normal to me. They look stretched.
3. What was the fuzz about the KitKat? Was that really needed? All I see is a few updated apps.
4. The display looks bad. Worse viewing angles than on the N4 and blacks as well. Everything looks washed out on it.
5. I purchased the OEM bumper and that's a total Google ripoff. Feels more like a $19.99 product, but definitely not the $34.99. The phone looks good in hand, but once you put it into a bumper it kills it. Makes the phone bulky as hell.
6. The speaker. It does the job, but it goes through the whole phone.
7. I don't care about the spec, the N5 basically brings nothing on the table except for the LTE support that was needed. Glad Google didn't hold the event, otherwise would have been a disaster.
For all those experiencing bad screen compared to nexus 4, the nexus 5 screen is uncalibrated, or calibrated poorly. Faux said that kernel rgb control should be possible, so it shouldn't be much longer until we get better picture. BTW, I think the actual LCD panel inside of this is very similar, if not the same, as the G2. Its just the calibration and software saturation LG implemented on the G2 to make it look like that.

2. Use a custom launcher.
3. When you just see "a few updated apps" then you didn't really use KitKat yet.
4. Perhaps I am lucky but my display is great. I don't check viewing angles... who looks on his phone from the side. Other than that I really like the colours.
7. If you don't care about specs then why did you get the N5 anyways?

So I have been with the device for two weeks and I think I have enough experience with it to write a review. The android phones i have owned are in order: og droid, droid inc 2, droid 3, RAZR HD, lg optimus l9 and now Nexus 5. I will sort the sections by importance. So let's begin
First things first: Performance
This is the best performing phone I have ever had. After two weeks of my game playing, music listening, browsing, school research, amazon orders, I give my smartphones little to no rest. And this baby still performs like it did out of the box. I have not seen any lag whatsoever. I am a rapid typer on my phones and this is the only phone that I have ever had that doesn't stutter at all while typing. Games play without a hitch. Best performing phone out there. Period.
Next up camera
The camera is superb. I know already that many of you won't agree with me on this but if you put yourself in my shoes coming from an optimus l9 the camera is extremely refreshing. Crisp pictures even in sub par lighting. HDR + is amazing and I can't wait until Google releases their new camera software.
Next up: screen
Screen is good and real to life but not bright enough. I feel that KitKat is trying to be a bright os but the screen on the nexus doesn't do it justice. Don't get me wrong, its super clear and crisp, just coming from the RAZR HD I know what a great vivid screen to be.
Sound:
its meh, best way I could describe it. Speakers are poor and vibrate the phone rather than exerting clear sound. Call quality is good but if you put the speaker against your ear too much you muffle the sound easily. Recording with the mic pics up sound accurately
Build quality
Its good but it could be better, I don't have to worry about it snapping in two or separating from casing like the nexus 7 2012 fiasco. Without a case it could be a little hard edged in your hand.
Battery life: so I go to school about 30 hours per week. The battery dies just about one hour after I get home at 5 pm. Giving me 11 hours of solid use. Whether its playing games and listening to music between bus rides, researching in the library, I'd like to think that the battery life is good but not as good as the RAZR HD
The verdict is an overall solid phone that is meant to be all around good, but not the best, kinda like Mario in Mario kart, or Ryu in street fighter.

Well, I will just put my short review in this post.
I received my Nexus 5 yesterday (I was surprised to hear from my local phonestore that they had received a shipment, altough they were only expecting it after 9 December).
I'm not using the phone yet, as I have to wait on my new SIM card, but these are my first impressions. Most of it will compare it to my Galaxy S2.
Battery
Although I don't have SIM in it yet, I can already see the difference in battery life.
My Galaxy S2 has a 2000mah battery (new from this summer, real Samsung brand), but it just burns through electricity. Technically, it can stay 5 days on standby (wifi + push sync), but if anything else is going on in the background, it is less than 1 day. Screen time is max 2 hrs on a full charge and if 3G reception is bad, the percentages also go down while watching.
The Nexus 5 came charged in the box (at 70%). After 1h30 of screen time (quite heavy usage, 1st sync, installing apps,...), it has reached the 40% mark. So, quite good in usage. During the night, it lost 1% charge on wifi+sync (but no mobile setup)
Product
The Nexus 5 looks good. I was surprised that the phone is not that much larger as an S2.
The black backpanel feels great (and less slippery than the white S2), but can hold some grease.
Screen
The screen of the Nexus 5 is just mind blowing. As being accustomed to use an AMOLED the past 2 years, it is quite different. I miss the pure blacks. But.. if I look at the S2, I miss the brightness
Pro: High resolution, quite big, high brightness (outdoor viewing)
Contra: The pure black still give the advantage to AMOLED when viewing in a dark room.
Camera
I don't understand the reviews telling that this is not a good camera. I really liked the S2 camera, but this is just so much better.
The daylight pictures don't differ that much (different color balance, and details at 100%crop), as they are both good camera's at 8Mpix. The difference is for pictures inside (or even darkness). In this case, the Nexus just shatters the S2 camera.
Outside, in darkness, the Nexus 5 shows the picture as real as possible (and not overexposing like the Lumias, or showing everything black like the S2).
Edit: included 2 pictures where you clearly see the difference between the S2 and Nexus 5.
Good review mate.

I'll throw in my bit if you don't mind:
Coming from the HTC One Google Edition
-Performance: Great (might be just because of KitKat)
-Speakers: Meh
-Screen: One is better calibrated, my N5 seems to have a yellow tint on whites
-Camera: Slow to focus and take pictures. Picture quality overall is comparable
-Build Quality: I'm a fan of the lighter and soft touch body of the N5. The One has a more premium feel though.
Coming from the Nexus 4
-Performance: Great
-Speakers: Same
-Screen: Great
-Camera: Better
-Build Quality: I didn't like the glass back of the N4
Performance of the nexus 5 is unmatched by any other android phone. The note 3 is a multitasking powerhouse and is fast and fluid but to me this is just something else.

Just to add to my review about battery life:
Gaming
Slightly better than the Galaxy S2 in heavy 3D games (e.g. Asphalt 8). +- 10% for 20 minutes.
The Galaxy S2 with a 2000mah battery matches this, but the battery decreases an extra 5-6% during 10 minutes after gaming, while the Nexus stays rock steady
general usage
When the screen is not too bright, the Nexus 5 has quite a long battery life (even on automatic setting, it isn't bad). Without any energy saving measures (screen on automatic, chrome browser), it has no problem to get +3hrs of screen time) including a full day standby and calls. The Galaxy S2 only will exceed 2hours of screen time of you keep the screen brightness at lowest (and unreadable) level (without standby)
Standby (includes push for gmail and a push Exchange account)
The Nexus 5 is king in the power sipping department. Standby on wifi is less than 0.5%/hour (3-4% on 9 hours => would be 8 days), and 3G standby closely matches this score, even in areas with bad reception.
I once had S2 do 4 days on standby by putting it next to the wireless router and not touching it (on 4.0.4). Since Jelly Bean, 48hrs is more a realistic number. Standby on 3G is way worse (15hrs max.). When in bad reception areas, the battery percentages just count down while you look at it....
I came from Galaxy note n7000
and nex 5 is just superb, awesome phone
everybody says touch is superb, so smooth etc sleek, light weight and super fast
Despite the fact I'm posting from my note2, I do own the Flex. I've had it for less than 24 hours, and I have my first impressions.
On my first charge, I experienced sub-par battery life compared to my Note2 on Verizon running Beans22 which is underclocked in both CPU and GPU.
I have switched from Verizon to T-Mobile and I get very similar reception on both phones (LTE) at home, and HSPA+/3g at work. Must be same cell tower for both carriers. I live and work in Ashburn VA, and I'm positive of the towers location.
I use my phone a lot for gaming, particularly Heroes of Order and Chaos. I don't think the Flex can handle that game as well as Note2 in regard to battery life. Performance is about the same...
Network lag on Tmo is worse than VZW, but the bandwidth on TMO is nucking futs. 30mbps TMO vs 12mbps VZW. I don't know what's up with the lag.
Screens. I have to give it to the Note2 for quality, but I love the size of the Flex's screen. I like the curved appearance. That's unique and worth the trade off in quality.
Quality is weird here. Resolution is the same, it its the grainyness I'm not liking, and it noticeable in solid textures such as the drop down menu. Brightness.. I haven't tested outdoor yet. That's a true test for me, but I will have to get to it later.
I love what LG has done with the interface. Its like having a custom ROM without the problems associated with a custom ROM. Add root, new battery icon, and remove ads, and I'm set. I have yet to do these just yet, but I will, and functionality will be that of my rooted Note2. Won't have the ability to under and over clock as I do with my Note's unlocked bootloader, but oh well.
Camera. Note2 all the way. There are tons more features, and low light quality on the Note blows away the Flex. I'm not happy with the Flex's camera actually, and it may be a determining factor in returning this device and getting the Note3. I haven't tried video as I don't shot much video in real life.
Button placement. Man that's just something you have to adapt to I suppose. I'm still fumbling around with the power button so I understand up using the knock function a lot, but sometimes it just doesn't work. That's kind of annoying. Sometimes I have to knock several times to get it to work. sometimes it works the first time, and when it does there is a lag.
Note2 has capacitive back and menu buttons along with a physical power button. I really love that because at all times you maximize your screen real estate because its not being consumed by the on screen buttons. If you subtract the on screen menu button real estate from the Flex and compare that screen size with the Note2, they are about the same in size, the Flex being a bit wider.
Note3 for me maybe?
Any questions, let me know I will be happy to answer them.
Cheers!

I'm also coming from the note 2 but I disagree with the battery life statement. I'm getting like 10 hours screen time with this when I would only get like 4 or 5 from the note. This phone is a beast.
Otherwise everything else I agree with. Display, picture, sound, etc were all better on the note, albeit by not a whole lot.
Overall I'm satisfied with the phone. The aesthetics are nice, screen size is exactly what I wanted, battery life is phenomenal and it's super fast.

You can hide the buttons on your lg flex without root. Battery life is worlds better on the flex even better than the note 3. Besides display i seen nothing on Samsung that's better imo. I did like my note 3 for pics but haven't really checked the flex yet. I really like my flex better than the note 3 or 2. Out would've been far superior if the flex would've had the 1080p display. Can't wait till second generation of the flex.
Funny thing is i liked my note 2 Better than i do my note 3. But at the same time i like the flex better than both. Glad to have had all three. There are all great devices,

Yes, its true, the brighter you set the display, the less you see the grain. Also being in a bright environment helps too such as outdoors or in a well lit room.

after a day or 2, when you just chilllax and use it as normal, you dont see what you were obsessed with b4
or, its actually possible after a few days, the display "Breaks in" somewhat..sort of like not calibrating a TV until you have at least 100 hours or more on it...

Cheers!

You talked about possibly going to the Note 3, which I have. What would be the major difference that works sway you to the Note 3. I enjoy it and like having the SD card functionality because all my music is on there and I also use it to take notes a basketball coach.

Also coming from a Note 2. Unless they are side by side i feel the G Flex is smaller, i think its because the curve and small bessel. So if this was a flat 6 inch it would probably look and feel bigger. I forget its in my front picked. Lol. Enjoying it.
Thanks for the thread guys. I've got a note 2, but getting bored (it's been a year in one phone which is very new to me). Don't really want a note 3 because it's basically a slightly bigger version of what I have. I'm really thinking about the flex. Glad to see some reviews of actual owners who have had both.

Mainly the on screen buttons annoy me. Sometimes when I'm typing , instead of hitting the space bar I end up hitting the home button.
The screen quality
Sd card
Stylus
Minusus:
I hate touch wiz. It doesn't bother me on my note 2 because it's rommed.
Don't like Sammy radios
Cost more
Not curved. I love the Flex for that

In not a big Touchwiz fan either. It just provides me the opportunity to do different things with the stylus and multitasking. I do think the curve firm factor could be useful.

I find the multitasking on the lg UI more intuitive than Touch Wiz. I did use my stylus on my note2 only for taking notes, but the Flex had a wonderful note app that I like more, and I use my fingernail, and the screen has no issue detecting my fingernail

I'll likely stop into a store to take a longer look at it. Take the opportunity to go through the phone some and see what it really has to offer.
