You have to be 100% stock to get the update. This includes stock recovery

hi!
my xperia z bootloader is locked and can be unlocked, i'm still on stock rom 4.1.2.
i'm planning to get root and install a recovery, but keep the bootloader locked. will it then be possible to receive sony's offical jb 4.2.2 update when rooted and recovery installed? i know that once the update 4.2.2. is installed i will have to re-root.
thanks

Thanks for your reply.
But will it install? Just a notification would be useless...
Or will I have to get the update somewhere here on xda and flash it manually?
It installs, and overwrites your root. For now that's not an issue, but when 5.0 comes out it might not be possible to get root again due to SELinux being implemented.
Yes exactly as Tom mentioned, it will happy install from PC Companion straight over top, then you just need to re-root again.
4.2.2 would be nice first Tom

You could downgrade to a 4.1.2 rom & firmware by flashing a RUU and then take all the updates back up to 4.2.2

I am on 4.1.2, Ive tried to install firmware to go back to stock recovery and all that but no success.
I dont want to install a rooted ROM cause I notice a big battery drain from them
Root is not a cause of battery drain.
Use this: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/defend-your-battery-with-wakelock-detector/ to find what's drain your battery and get rid of it.

Hi,
I wanted to ask whether I will get the official OTA update if my bootloader says *TAMPERED*.
Also, what else could prevent me form getting the updates? I am running this ROM.
Thanks for your time.

Yes you will get the official update but you need to have the stock recovery installed, so when the update comes out flash the stock recovery using fastboot, do the OTA update and then reflash TWRP or CWM and thats it.
You'll need to lock your bootloader aswell.

Actually No you don't have to as long as you have the stock odexed ROM and the stock recovery you can do the OTA!
You can check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306880

Didn't work for me when I went back to stock, OTA failed but worked after I'd relocked my bootloader.

That's weird, it worked for me when I updated to 1.24.401.8 last week!
Thanks for the answers. My ROM should be de-odexed. That is a problem I presume?
Thanks again for your time.

It's needs to be the stock ROM in stock form, without modification, otherwise the OTA will probably fail.
Retested this morning, update downloads, goes to install but stops part way through and shows the red triange with exclamation point ... That's on a stock, odexed ROM with stock recovery.
Several times I have run ruu on pc to go back to 4.1.2 using 1.28.401.6 ruu, then with S off and super cid and unlocked bootloader have successfully received and installed Ota updates up to an including 2.224.401.8
I am convinced that ota are no problem with unlocked bootloader.
Don't know if s off effects this
So I have a Sense HTC One which I rooted (TWRP)) and s-offed to install 4.4 GPe stock. Worked absolutely fine but when I try to update the 4.4.2 OTA, TWRP stops with the error - "unexpected contents in /sys/basicdreams.apk
I tried moving the file, deleting the file, downloading a new copy and putting it in /sys - but it just wont work.
Anyone faced this problem?

Wow, so I can never get OTA updates. I need to wait for custom ROM with the update in it? Any 4.4.2 GPe stock ROM out there?

You can flash stock recovery then update then flash back. Is there a problem there? If not there are stock. Roms available. It just takes a little bit of looking.

Hi ya'll
I bought a Xperia Z1 second hand on eBay and found that even though its stock ROM and bootloader is locked - its rooted with some dodgy chinese superuser app. It is running 4.2.2 and keeps saying update available but it keeps failing when I try to install an OTA update that seems to be available.
1. Is it failing cause its rooted?
2. How do I unroot it so I will get the 4.3 OTA?
Thanks in advance.

Yes you can't update via OTA if it's rooted. grab a ftf in one of the firmware threads on here for the Z1 and do it manually.

Use flashtool to flash a stock rom
Thanks for the quick responses. Do i grab a 4.3 FTF file or 4.2.2? If I grab 4.3 will my bootloader unlock camera fix not get installed? Is that installed via OTA only?

Actually no, OTA still works even on rooted phones. That's how people can have root on 4.3 firmware with locked boot loader - they get the root on 4.2 and then update it via OTA. I did it myself, so I'm sure it works this way.
Seems like OP has different issue.
Still, solution is flashing an ftf, yeah.
OTA definitely works on rooted phones. Try installing SuperSU from the playstore, that will get rid of the chinese spam, then run the update again. if that fails just go for Flashtool. good luck!

Yeah. I ended up flashing 4.2.2 then got the OTA update. Now running CM11. Had a scary moment where I flashed TWRP from a thread here into the boot partition and I got the red blink of death, but must have been the wrong recovery to flash.
