Problem after ROOT - HTC Desire C

Hi , I have a Desire C and I rooted the phone recently I installed the recovery from teamwin last version,
all good untill here , then I installed cynogetmod v10 and when the phone starts I can't find Google Play and no previous apps that were installed on the phone.
How can I reinstall the app, I tried from the phone to install the google play , but it says that the app is already installed on the phone.
I tried deleting the apps from the pc in google play but , can't find the remove button for any of the apps...
I just bought the phone and it's my first android until now so if your gonna reply please define your words.Cuz I don't understand everything.

Did you flash gapps after flashing cyanogenmod?

I don't know what that is, but I knew I forgot something. So how do I do that ?

U need to enter on your boot menu ,and install google apps thing (i need to check exactly how,and will whisp asap) ...too bad, most ppl here dont want to explain how things works. They were newbies ,once.

You need to go to the thread of the rom you downloaded. Download the gapps package.
Then go to recovery mode, click on install. Then select the zip file. It was mentioned in the instructions..

I don't know if it was directed at me. But I can tell you that there are tons and tons of guides that 'explain how things work'. It is up to the new user to read them.
I answer the questions under the assumption that the user has read 'atleast' the threads that are stickied in the general and development section of this forum.
If you read the FAQ thread in the general section, you will see that the question "What is Gapps?" has been clearly answered. So i was working under the assumption that the user knows what gapps is..

I replied quickly because I was on my phone , not on the pc and I was with my car at the mechanic. So no time for search about gapps , but I did read all the forum and honestly I could not find the thing again, cuz I know I read somewhere about this , but I could not find that thread again..
And the flashing I experienced it without the tutorial , I briefly read what it was said and went to work on it. That's the best way for me to learn to do things.

If you read the main CM10 thread, there is a big link written in big words. "Gapps". Click this very long text to download gapps and flash it through recovery. I need to remind you that you are going to need to flash a kernel as well and you need a PC for that.

so ur taking me for a fool now ?
I just mentioned that there are 10 versions of the gapps I think I was very specific.

No offence, but while that method may work for other things, for anything related to your phone, always read first!
And never try to skip instructions or skim pass them.
You could end up with am expensive paperweight (or brick)!

Guys, I don't have the original image and the only image I have on my SDcard is eclair 2.0-1.2
I am just upset with the OP for providing insufficient instructions and I am very unaware of the previous setup required before doing it so.
I am in recovery mode and my G1 keeps rebooting over and over since I wipe the factory default.
I apologize for not using the search button because I don't see any answers, or maybe I just want direct answer.
Sorry, I have to ask this, how do I recover the image on my G1? I have it connected to my PC but it's currently in recovery mode right now.
Please provide me detailed step to step what I need to do. Thank you for your time and effort, this is upsetting me big time.

Don't blame them for the fact you didn't read THIS :
first you will need these things haykuro spl,ext3/linux-swap if you dont have it and if you do wipe them clean

If u r using stock recovery u should b serching for something like Fastboot or adb, if u using cyan's or RA's recovery that just find different room to flash. It would b nice to know Phones specs...SPL, Radio, REcovery etc. just like what i got in my sig.
For future references post in Q&A thread or where is the ROM u flashed is, Provide some info if u need help.
I am using standard recovery. I tried Droid Explorer and no luck.

Since you're too cocky and too ignorant to do most of the things on here, I suggest you put your phone back to stock as soon as you figure out how to flash images. Get the "recovery image" from here http://developer.htc.com/google-io-device.html, then go ahead and get a card reader, drop the file on the reader, rename it update.zip, boot into recovery, alt+s to flash it, alt+w to wipe, then reboot.

ok then go here and set up adb after u done follow the link in my sig to flash RA 1.5.2 recovery. After u get RA recovery find the rom u need to flash id suggest Cyans rom or WG and make sure ur SPL and RAdio is uptodate.
Good luck.

please help a newb out

I would like someone to explain to me in detail how to get the other lockscreen for fresh 2.0b i would like the non-sense one. someone tryed to explain to me that u need to use sdk. which i downloaded but i dont know what to do from there i unzipped onto my desktop now what?
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+delete+htclockscreen
I would mind a guide as well. Or at least a confirmation that what I find on google works in 2.1 roms...
edit: i mean the nexus style lockscreen
I would say dont mess with it. Sounds like you are not sure what ADB is and haven't really done your reading.
There are ways to backup files and restore files to change the lockscreen. Hell, there is a thread on page 1 or 2 that talks specifically about lockscreens.
Please do some reading, the info is right in front of you.

I agree, I am fairly new to the Android and I was able to get through the initial steps of rooting it and flashing it however, I want to know the details.
Do I need to reinstall my programs every time or is there provxml like Windows Mobile had?
I partitioned my SD Card because the option is there but what is it for? Why is there a need to adb push some items vs just copying data directory on the card from the usb connection.
Why can't I get Live Wallpapers to work even when I disable Sense UI via home switcher?
The Wiki is great for some of the how's but I am missing some of the why's. And where I can go. Then if you go to a thread, the people on the thread are usually pass the point I wanna know and refer to it in passing.
Sorry OP, I don't have an answer to your question, but just many questions of my own. Now, I admit I could have missed the information somewhere on here but usually that kind of thing is sticked but this forum chooses not to use Stickies.
Thanks for any help you've got.
Not sure what to tell you. The information is here for you to read. There are a ton of devs on this board that are doing a ton of stuff most of us dont know. This is a development forum, meaning they are de-compiling tweaking and recompiling. What you are looking for is a 101 class but these discussions are mostly 501 material.
Android is based on Linux. If you know that you have a leg up.
If you find a guide that teaches how to understand this stuff, please share it with all of us. Most of what these guys are doing is from lots and lots of experience and lots and lots of trail and error.
Hell, there are people that have gone to the lengths to write countless guides on rooting, pushing and pulling files, hell there is even a guide on how to compile your own ROM.
The information is there. Lots of it I don't understand either, so I sit back and try to answer what I can answer, most of which is just posting an answer someone else posted and I read because I have read a LOT!!!.

It depends. Don't know what that program is. There are backup programs that you can buy that will do backups. You only lose your apps when you do a wipe. Please read more and understand what you are doing before you do it.

You will have a very hard time getting answers to any "why" type question when dealing with programming. Most of the time I get from my devs is "why not" or "cause that's what I felt like that day"

There is a guides stickie, a rom stickie. Not sure what else you are looking for.
My advice, if you do not know what you are doing, dont do it. Dont flash a radio unless you know what that will do. Keep reading until you understand what you are about to do.
i tryed using root explorer app and hold then delete but it says it is a read only file and can not be deleted?
I agree with a lot of the posts I have seen so far regarding the information existing and having to spend the time to find it. It was a bear for me to figure out how to sign zip files so that i could customize ROMs, but after spending nearly 6 hours going from one site to another and one thread to another, I finally pieced it together and can sign zips. In the meantime, i also learned a lot of other things too because as someone else mentioned here, a lot of times a thread is full of stuff, but only references something that they might be interested in at that particular moment.
Unfortunately, this is an advanced forum and lots of the people on here have taken the time to learn things by just "putting in the time"... You need to do the same thing and use search 5 ways from sunday to find what you want... if 10 pages into a 50 page thread you haven't found what you want, you still need to finish the last 40 pages, click all the links in the threads and make sure you've searched things in that thread that you can't find after finishing it... then you do it all over again on another thread.
Guides are nice, but if everyone spent time making guides, development of ROMs etc. would suffer as this is not easy stuff until you figure it out and make it work and there is no truly easy way to make a guide that is multi-faceted.
Maybe if you learn things on your own, you can piece together all the different places you found the pieces you needed to do what you wanted and create the guide...
R
Thank you

Now if its title implicates its meaning, I think it might be answer to the question up above, but I haven't been able to find an explanation of what it is. Maybe that's my impatience. I did look in the guides on the WIKI and although there is an explanation about how to switch an Apps2SD card, there is no explanation of what it is or how to use it.

You have to press the {R/W} button on the top of the screen first. Stands for Read/Write, when done press it again so it says {R/O} Read/Only
Joker,
I'm willing to try to walk you through it step-by-step if you want me to. Are you running Windows? If so, have you downloaded Android SDK Windows? Once you've downloaded that, put it in the C:\ directory of your hard drive and let me know. I'll try to make this in plain English. I'm rather new to Android myself, but this is a rather simple task if you have someone willing to explain it to you. I'll give it a shot.
Please connect your phone and select the HTC Sync option. I forgot to mention in the previous post that you should have the most recent HTC driver installed on your computer. If you have HTC Sync installed, you should have the driver too. When you connect your phone and select HTC Sync, it will search for Sync but not find it. This is ok, just acknowledge the prompt on your phone.
Next, open the Command Prompt. One way to do this is to go to the Start Menu ---> Run and type: cmd
This should open the Command Prompt in a new window. Next type each of the following lines into the Command Prompt and press Enter at the end of each line.
cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app/
rm HtcLockScreen*
exit
adb reboot
Once you press enter after the reboot, your phone should reboot with the Android 2.1 lockscreen. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to ask. I'll try to check back and answer whatever I can. Good luck.
i got it to work thanks so much everyone for your help!

First Attempt at Modding my Samsung Captivate…..

I just got my first REAL smartphone, actually it’s still on FedEx truck.
From reading the stickies on this forum, here’s what I gathered so far (and I am starting from scratch – nothing on my phone yet)
1) Root my phone with the ‘OneClick’ tool.
2) Install ROM (I am thinking Cognition, since it’s recommended for beginner).
3) Install Theme (haven’t decide on one yet) – any suggestions?
So, am I missing anything?
You seem to have a good grasp on what you are doing. I do recommend buying/making a Jig to have around just in case.
You're well on your way.
Make sure and read up on bootloaders and the difference between 2.1/2.2 and 2.3 bootloaders as getting this wrong is the main thing that can lead to "big" trouble.
Also take a look at Odin, Odin One Click return to stock and make sure and know the difference between those and the Odin One Click w/3 Button Combo.
thanks guys, i think i have a good idea of what i want to do but i am still struggling to find the details to do the above.
for example, what difference if my phone batch is 1010, or 1012, or older?
do i need to get an microsd card, if so what size/brand?
what sofware do i need to download?
etc, etc. etc.
i will continue to browse through the forums, but if you know of any links please post.
also, what does the jig do? do i need to have one?
thanks
First decide what u want to do, As u stated first root the phone and then u want a custom ROM, So go ahead and try it.
Only thing i will advice start from a froyo rom then to the gingerbread as there would be less chances to brick your phone while flashing the b.loades.
Read the OP properly of the ROM which you want to flash there are many good froyo rom available here. But just be sure what u are doing.
Please for the love of all things unholy, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049294
and if the phone comes with froyo you will need this after rooting before flashing a rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
At the start DEFINITE GUIDE TO BRICKING, LOL.
Its just a joke be sure you read it all.

Again i will say read the OP carefully before flashing.
I have a few Captivates in the family and IMHO the first thinkg to do before flashing anything is to purchase Root Explorer in the market (for around $4) then back up your EFS folder (in the main directory) and save it to a cd so you ALWAYS have a hard copy of it. These files are specific to your phone and if they get screwed up during flashing, you phone may not be able to be used as a phone anymore. The back up copy will save you.
All of the above stuff is good. I was a noob about 6 months ago but I spent hours upon hours of reading and watching videos about flashing and moding. Good luck!

the OP is the original post or poster, like your first question is the op, and you are also the op of the thread. in that context he meant the original post, because that will have most of the information about the rom...but i would expand on that to read the op and the a couple of pages in, and also if its a large thread with alot of posts read atleast the LAST 5 or 6 pages also.
anymore terms you are unfamiliar with read the op of this thread carefully: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093062
thanks for clarying.
just got my phone in the mail.
i looked at the batch number under the battery slot and it shows 1106.
does this mean i have version 2.1 or 2.2? what would be the appropriate app/tool for rooting?
thanks
The batch had nothing to do with the firmware....that just means your phone was built in june of 2011. But since it's a new phone it more than likely has 2.2 confirm this in settings>about phone> firmware version.
Use super one click to root.
BUT FIRST PLEASE READ SOME MORE.
All of the information you are looking is already on here at the very least twice probably WAY more.
it is indeed version 2.2
so i read the first page of this thread and also watched the youtube clip. it looks straight enough to root. but i got a question. should i run the universal root or the captivate root?

You should have the driver installed on your computer for anything you do with the phone. Make sure after you install drivers to plug in your phone to the computer in all the different modes it has - in debugging mode, not in debug mode, in download mode, and connecting as an external drive. The computer will install all the drivers when you do this.
I will try to attach v1.6.5 of Super One CLick. I hope it's ok with the moderators here that I am posting the software. Just unzip the folder and double click the android icon in that folder.

Hey guys i am starting this thread here as i find there are so many people asking questions and bricking their phones.I just want to help out people and save them from bricking their phones..
i have tried all Froyo based roms available for the captivate.i have good experience in rooting, clockworkmod and flashing roms.I would like to help out all new members here as much possible because just 2 months back i had trouble finding out things...
So what are you guys waiting for ask away....!
P.S:also i kindly request the other senior members and developers here to correct me if i am wrong anywhere and ya i dont want any donations....
Hey, I'm working on something with a similar spirit as this.
A work in progress: self help brick recovery guide
If you would want help out with this. I believe that it could help the q&a and other section of the captivate thread a lot by reducing the number of brick threads
If either of you have experience with web coding, perhaps it would be worthwhile to make up a page that has an interactive checklist of brick steps. Sort of a step-by-step troubleshooter.
For example, the first page could just be the question about whether the phone shows any signs of life at all or not, then have a page with selectable items about the Rom/kernel/modem setup, then move into more specific items.
See the attached zip for what I'm talking about.

I saw the zip and got what you are saying i liked it. I have a decent hold over html & java so i must be able to create that....!
But i will need space to host it....!
Perhaps in lieu of hosting space, save it as an all-in-one zip file and post it on here. You wouldn't need a large amount additional space (I assume) as there probably wouldn't be a huge need for images. If that's the case, it would be all text, which should be fairly small.

true it wont be a big zip file......!
I will create it and post it here
Wow jmtheiss you took my idea to the next level, i never though of making it interactive. But that my be the key that really will make it work.
sorry adicool I'm no good with HTML or coding i will have to leave that to you. But I have a knack for graphic design. Plus I can find and collect the images that could be use as examples (ex. like a soft brick screen)

Looks good to me. Clean, simple, easy to follow.
A good starting point, if you need any help feel free to ask.
Thought here: The one package is good. I'm also thing that we can have each section posted package as a separate package too (along with the whole package). So those who only need one thing like rooting the can just download that section
Hi! I'm new to the forums and need some help. I have stock I897UCKB1, sucessfully rooted and unlocked it. I would like to try out some ROMs, CM7 first. How should i start? I assume i have Eclair/Froyo bootloaders, right? I've installed ROM Manager Premium, clicked flash clockworkmod, and to reboot to recovery but it's only stock recovery. How should i proceed? Also i need some enlightment on bootloaders: if i flash the newest GB ATT bootloaders will every ROM work with it? Thanks in advance!
Go to the general section, there is a thread called "sticky roll-up" in there is a link to a thread called "e: signature verification failed" that is the work around you need for cwm (or any zip) to flash
Or you can flash a froyo kernel that has cwm baked in with odin like speedmod...
I wouldn't mess with bootloaders st this point in your flashing experience that its the only time you risk a real hard brick do leave those alone until you know for sure what you're doing.
I totally forgot about muse, so here's my on take of the guide.

I would advice you to first try flashing a few froyo based roms just to gain experience in flashing after that you can move over to GB
as told by my friends here there is a thread here that fixes that cwm problem .!
If you still need help or cant find it do post here and i would be more than happy to help...!whatever you do just dont mess with bootloaders atm as they can cause your device to be bricked...
I would say start off first by flashing cognition 4.5.3....!

[Q] Tough One - Hung on Samsung Logo, no recovery mode - must keep pics!

Basically my phone is stuck on the GT-N7000 Samsung Logo screen.
Would love if somebody could make my day and tell me how I can restore my phone with it's pictures.
I know this is not as simple as it sounds but I have read a thread that explains something about non-wiping ROMs / upgrade ROMs? Is this true?
Notes:
I have a stock ROM (I bought the phone via Amazon Germany though).
Never tried to place another ROM onto phone.
I cannot go into recovery mode.
I am able to go into download mode.
I have heard of this ODIN but not familiar.
Heeelp!

If you do not want to listen and do not want to read yourself (at least the first few posts with the tutorials) then why do you cry for help?
And answer in such an idiotic behavior?
Don't you think that it is this way of ignorance that is resulted in your "bricked" device?

Are you kidding me!? You're honestly a senior member? Calling my response idiotic is probably a little ironic. Let me explain why...
Firstly, I'm not going to waste too much of my time replying to you but my concern was that during the 501 pages of the thread something may changed from the start, I can't be sure how accurate the first posts are, which I feel is a valid point 1.
As for the bricked device, the phone became bricked itself due to no fault of my own, other people have experienced the same thing, I have avoided popping ROM's onto the phone to avoid voiding my warranty, I did not tamper with anything, this is valid point 2.
If you have nothing positive to contribute to this thread please refrain from adding any further comments, or take a chill pill and use a little empathy senior member.
I should also add that:
- I eeked at the 501 pages - I was not being condescending.
- I believe that there is a difference between ROM's that completely flash the whole memory and upgrade ROM's that will retain, hence why I asked the question, about 'upgrade' ROM's.
If you want to pull the pictures from the phone internal memory you can use a pc program called adb.exe, but you need to be in download mode.

Except he is right. This has been discussed. You're method is to read that thread. This is a website (or at least is supposed to be) for users that are willing to read the guides people have slaved to create
Everything you need to know is there.
And absent hardware failure, a phone doesn't brick itself.
Read dr.ketan thread on how to flash a stock ROM via PC Odin from download mode. The guide is current. This is the only answer you will receive here.

Thanks Ranger Captain! Much appreciated. I'll look into this!
The expert on adb.exe is a user nemed studacris. I think it would be ok to PM him and get the specifics of the command.
Roughly, connect the phone to the pc in download mode, open a command window, navigate to your adb directory, type adb device to confirm the connection, then type adb pull \directory name\all files /directory on pc and the files will transfer from the internal phone memory to your pc.

When you come across a 501 page thread and say the answer is there and current for people who are willing to read there is a bit of a problem here.
I was hoping a tech Guru on here who is familiar with my problem could help summarise key points relevant to my problem.
I am willing to concede after some of you have eluded to much of the information is in the first few pages. Thank you.
As for bricking - there has been corruption of what seems to be the firmware, which not is of the question, what point are you making? If you read a few other threads, others have experienced similar issues with attempting to update their ROM's.

Hey man. All you need to do is read the first post of dr.ketan's thread. Good luck. If flashing a stock ROM via PC Odin doesn't work, per the isnstructions on that thread, I will personally be more than glad to help. But that IS your first step.
There is nothing to summarize. Follow the procedure in that thread OP. You don't have to read ANY of the thread except the guide. If it doesn't help you get up and running, feel free to PM me or post here. But when someone tells you to read a thread you must realize they are probably referring to the Original Post. If you are told to search (xda users rule #1), then that is a different story. For example, if you said 'how do I Use an OTG cable', I would say 'search this thread for the keyword otg'. Nevertheless, that is not the case here. There is a specific guide in the OP of that thread that describes what your first step to fix your device should be. Once that has been exhausted, please feel free to ask for further guidance.
Take care and good luck.

I was reading. There is something not quite clear. Although the thread tells you a lot about how to do something, it doesn't say what it does or what it's for.
I've downloaded the software but further threads highlight that data may still be deleted.
Would you mind advising of how the thread can ensure that my data will not be deleted?

Which data you refer to?
Question: is your data nor backed up via Google?
As for SD card data, like photos, is that what you're talking about?
