i have tried to S-OFF before but there was not a way with the hboot1.54, now with the 4.4 update coming out i found many posts saying that i can S-OFF with Rumrunner.
i tried to no successes, at first it gave me error but after reinstalling the HTC drive twice it appeared to be working.
sadly it reaches a point after 2 fast boots then tells me: FATAL

"Firmware: 2.24.401.8" you got that from "fastboot getvar all" or from where??
if this is your firmware, as confirmed by a "fastboot getvar all", then flash a Guru Reset: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_2-24-401-8-zip/
select WIPE, select ROOT, unselect "stock recovery", and then try rumrunner, should work.
The trick is how can it work with me!

Don't quite understand your question, but here goes:
1- you said have firmware 2.24.401.8
2- the Guru Reset ROM I linked earlier is exactly for 2.24.401.8 and has ability to install ROOT
3- before rumrunner universal was released, the 2.24.401.8 specific rumrunner package worked just fine; i haven't had a chance to read up on rumrunner universal recently, but it should work as well
4- if you don't try, you won't know if it works
5- .....
Got it. Will try it when i get home.
Thank you all

yep, it's 1GB, make sure ZIP isnt corrupted you can check MD5 sum.
It's that big cause it's a full HTC Sense 5 (android 4.2.2) version. only the GPE or CW versions (plain google edition) are smaller, HTC Sense 5 and 5.5 ROMs are all around 1GB
it is now flashing, but it has past 25 min and the indicator started and got stuck on 10%. is this normal?

i believe you need to be ROOTED for rumrunner to work.
anyway, if all is good, would you mind editing the main thread title to include [SOLVED]. thanks.
otherwise let me know
the the fastboot it shows that it is tampered and unlocked doesn't that mean that the phone is rooted?
i still did not get the s-off so the problem is not solved.

no, "tampered" and "unlocked" doesnt mean you have ROOT privileges (ie superuser), you said you're on 4.3 now right?
download Guru Reset: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_3-62-401-1-zip/
flash it using custom recovery (either CWM or TWRP), and in the installer: select WIPE, select ROOT, unselect "stock recovery"
then use rumrunner to get s-off.

this may seem really stupid but is there a reason i need s-off ? becase with s-on i can still flash roms that are prerooted so i can still run superuser apps so really whats the point is it worth downgrading hboot to soff?

With unlocked bootloader, you may have to flash boot.img separately with some custom ROMs which has caused many questions and issues for some.
You can run custom recoveries, which allows add more functions, like backing up, flashing other utilities, changing system binaries. Without S-Off you can't run Clockworkmod recovery.

That is not entirely correct.
If you unlock your bootloader using HTCDev.com procedure (which the OP has done), the HBOOT screen will show S-ON, but you will be able to install custom recoveries and perform backups, install SU and root the ROM, etc.

You void your warranty when you S-Off as well, but you can restore it to a factory S-On, I'm not sure if you can do that with the HTCDev method
Having S-off is like going on a weekend trip with a pack of condoms and girls of your choice. Going HTCdev unlock is like doing the same with your parents or worse, a chaperone. In eithe case, you void your warranty, but if needed, you can always revert to s-on for warranty claims with none the wiser. What would you choose?

Yes flash in recovery. The RUU will reset you back to factory settings as when you bought it
Thank for the RUU!!
I am stuck however.
The RUU worked perfectly.
I unlocked phone again no problem.
BUT somehow I cannot flash a recovery image:'(
I was wanting to flash twrp 2.6.3 but keep getting
"Error: cannot open recovery.img"
I have tried trwp 2.6.3, 2.5 and CWM images
And every image comes up with the same error.
I do type ".img" at the end.
The pc DOES see my device when I type
"fastboot devices"
And can even erase cache lol
Iam S-on.
Phone does boot into normal HTC OS
I am just stumped. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
I have done this several times in ny old EVO3D and 2 HTC ones

Thanks for sharing, I guess I'll go back to MIUI now
Hmm, I just did the OTA. It looked like it flashed okay, but now I'm getting a weird error message when using motion gestures. Says "Motion Launcher is unavailable because an update is still being installed. Please enter your SIM PIN to finish the update process." No idea what this means or what I should do...

only that it exists, sounds pretty minor...I'll have the HK OTA soon, if someone can upload the non-HK OTA, so I can update the firmware thread...

i have the ZIP downloaded of the OTA untouched for the HK edition 4.25.654.14 to 4.25.654.18
it just a a security fix, the ZIP file is about 26MB

NOTE: If you're updating with this ZIP, YOU MUST NEED THE STOCK RECOVERY, NO CUSTOM RECOVERY!
Petition: if anyone can make it flashabe via TWRP i'll be thankful all my life!
Edit: Here's the Recovery of ht HK edition: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19814115/recovery_signed-4.25.654.14.img
Will this update kill root or reverse s-off?

I can't say for S-OFF, but I was able to re-root with no hassle.

If you want to update, you need to flash the original recovery to update the phone and then reflash the custom recovery.

That much I understand. But I don't want to update with this OTA if it will reverse s-off.
Hence my question...

OTAs will never reverse S-OFF, at least I have never heard of one doing so....I guess technically it could, but HTC does not have a history of doing that. You have to enter a specific fastboot cmd to go back to S-ON

OTA update
I received my OTA update and accepted to install but it goes to TWRP and then I am out of luck. I unblocked my HTC One M8 HK edition using "Enabling 3G (UMTS) in all the countries" somewhere on this forum. Any alternatives: do nothing, wait for a developers software, etc.?
