[Q] reason for s-off ? - HTC Incredible S

this may seem really stupid but is there a reason i need s-off ? becase with s-on i can still flash roms that are prerooted so i can still run superuser apps so really whats the point is it worth downgrading hboot to soff?

With unlocked bootloader, you may have to flash boot.img separately with some custom ROMs which has caused many questions and issues for some.

You can run custom recoveries, which allows add more functions, like backing up, flashing other utilities, changing system binaries. Without S-Off you can't run Clockworkmod recovery.

That is not entirely correct.
If you unlock your bootloader using HTCDev.com procedure (which the OP has done), the HBOOT screen will show S-ON, but you will be able to install custom recoveries and perform backups, install SU and root the ROM, etc.

You void your warranty when you S-Off as well, but you can restore it to a factory S-On, I'm not sure if you can do that with the HTCDev method

Having S-off is like going on a weekend trip with a pack of condoms and girls of your choice. Going HTCdev unlock is like doing the same with your parents or worse, a chaperone. In eithe case, you void your warranty, but if needed, you can always revert to s-on for warranty claims with none the wiser. What would you choose?

You will need bone stock 2.1, or if you have s-off, you can extract the firmware, and flash it via hboot.
Make sure you have unrevoked forever before you flash any official firmware.

It could be, the last update was 3.16.605.0 this one is 3.21.605.1
The site is going slow as balls right now.
The tech blogs did update their rumors yesterday to say the OTA was going to drop 9/1, so the timing would be about right.
I'm glad to see the radio version is the same as the last one leaked, so I don't have to flash that again

I have the 8/1 froyo leak,215 radio,s-off would I need to do with this .....im also rooted.??
Ooo very nice. Anyone tried this yet?
Would anyone be so kind to put out some quick notes how to apply this update? Like is there a certain order those need to be flashed, or will it work like an installer and do it's on thing?
Ya, I'm a very new to this community.
Looks like the 2.15 radio a lot of us installed is the radio they are rolling with, then? Seems same exact radio.
Not that I would, but since s-off, a person can just install this via h-boot or rom manager from sd if they wanted?
I think I will wait for one of the rom chefs to bake a flavor of it. It may be the same release we already have, but with extra "cool" stuff like locking tethering down, more bloatware and root-hole fills.....
Not messing with this one, since do not want VZW's "cool" stuff
added:
If this can be installed without root as well, it could be the real deal.
I'm a retarded noob... After
root, how do I flash this? From recovery? Or some other way? I don't know much about RUU...

After root and S-Off, if I flash this, do I lose root or my custom recovery? Thank you.

PLEASE put this in the OP so everyone doesn't go all flash happy and then whines when they lose root.

well, a master root was released last night by the exploid guy that targets ALL android devices to date... IE, it hits google code. But still, s-off to be safe. That's why we made it possible.
If this rom can be installed without rooting, I could see non-rooters wanting to, but why would anyone that has gone to the trouble of rooting want to go to a locked-down, tether constrained, bloatware version?
Looks like I need to S-OFF to my GFs INC then bring it back to this version should it be legit.

[Q] [solved] s-off hboot 1.54, Rumrunner not working

i have tried to S-OFF before but there was not a way with the hboot1.54, now with the 4.4 update coming out i found many posts saying that i can S-OFF with Rumrunner.
i tried to no successes, at first it gave me error but after reinstalling the HTC drive twice it appeared to be working.

"Firmware: 2.24.401.8" you got that from "fastboot getvar all" or from where??
if this is your firmware, as confirmed by a "fastboot getvar all", then flash a Guru Reset: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_2-24-401-8-zip/

Don't quite understand your question, but here goes:
1- you said have firmware 2.24.401.8
2- the Guru Reset ROM I linked earlier is exactly for 2.24.401.8 and has ability to install ROOT
3- before rumrunner universal was released, the 2.24.401.8 specific rumrunner package worked just fine; i haven't had a chance to read up on rumrunner universal recently, but it should work as well
4- if you don't try, you won't know if it works
5- .....
Got it. Will try it when i get home.
Thank you all

yep, it's 1GB, make sure ZIP isnt corrupted you can check MD5 sum.
It's that big cause it's a full HTC Sense 5 (android 4.2.2) version. only the GPE or CW versions (plain google edition) are smaller, HTC Sense 5 and 5.5 ROMs are all around 1GB
it is now flashing, but it has past 25 min and the indicator started and got stuck on 10%. is this normal?

i believe you need to be ROOTED for rumrunner to work.

the the fastboot it shows that it is tampered and unlocked doesn't that mean that the phone is rooted?

no, "tampered" and "unlocked" doesnt mean you have ROOT privileges (ie superuser), you said you're on 4.3 now right?
download Guru Reset: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_3-62-401-1-zip/

Got it downloaded and installed, its amazing. Only problem is that I got a bootloop when I first loaded it, but that was fixed by clearing the cache, dalvik cache, and something else. Thanks!
For those of you that are going to use this ROM, if you install with S-ON, and then later decide that you want to S-OFF (like me), then you will need to reflash the ROM after you achieve S-OFF, otherwise the ROM freezes at the "Sense 5" startup screen and then begins a bootloop up to that point.

I'm not going to be a huge help here but as far as I know if you want to convert your ONE to a Google Play Edition you will need S-OFF. To gain that you will need to use Sunshine that will cost you $25. Firewater (free) is no longer available unfortunately. Once you're s-off you can findsome guides how to proceed with the conversion.

You have a Unlocked T-mobile x.xx.651.x One M7 .. you will indeed need Sunshine S-off to convert it to GPe
To see if you have custom recovery / In the bootloader just choose recovery and hit power
you'll get stock recovery or CWM or TWRP to come up. If you want to just try GPe you don't have to convert your phone their are Roms that work with s-on phones with TWRP or CWM recovery
