I bought and HTC one off swappa. I previously had a nexus 5 and rooting that phone was so easy. Now with the HTC one I don't even know where to start. Is my boot loader unlocked? Can I get s-off with this hboot? I am trying to install the google edition firmware on this phone, but I'm so lost. Any help is appreciated.

I'm not going to be a huge help here but as far as I know if you want to convert your ONE to a Google Play Edition you will need S-OFF. To gain that you will need to use Sunshine that will cost you $25. Firewater (free) is no longer available unfortunately. Once you're s-off you can findsome guides how to proceed with the conversion.

You have a Unlocked T-mobile x.xx.651.x One M7 .. you will indeed need Sunshine S-off to convert it to GPe
To see if you have custom recovery / In the bootloader just choose recovery and hit power
you'll get stock recovery or CWM or TWRP to come up. If you want to just try GPe you don't have to convert your phone their are Roms that work with s-on phones with TWRP or CWM recovery

I'm so confused. Let's say I flash a ROM while s-on. Do I fastbooy flash the boot IMG? And doesn't the firmware stay the same? Wouldn't it be better if I use sunshine?

Why confused ? S-off is fine but you can also do more harm to your phone
you don't flash boot.img it comes with the rom
to flash roms all you need unlocked bootloader (free at htcdev.com)
custom recovery - free here >> http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
and SuperSU for Root free here >> http://download.chainfire.eu/641/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip
all you gain with s-off is the ability to flash older firmware and RUU for a different device ...for example convert to Developer edition or GPe

this may seem really stupid but is there a reason i need s-off ? becase with s-on i can still flash roms that are prerooted so i can still run superuser apps so really whats the point is it worth downgrading hboot to soff?

With unlocked bootloader, you may have to flash boot.img separately with some custom ROMs which has caused many questions and issues for some.
You can run custom recoveries, which allows add more functions, like backing up, flashing other utilities, changing system binaries. Without S-Off you can't run Clockworkmod recovery.

That is not entirely correct.
If you unlock your bootloader using HTCDev.com procedure (which the OP has done), the HBOOT screen will show S-ON, but you will be able to install custom recoveries and perform backups, install SU and root the ROM, etc.

You void your warranty when you S-Off as well, but you can restore it to a factory S-On, I'm not sure if you can do that with the HTCDev method
Having S-off is like going on a weekend trip with a pack of condoms and girls of your choice. Going HTCdev unlock is like doing the same with your parents or worse, a chaperone. In eithe case, you void your warranty, but if needed, you can always revert to s-on for warranty claims with none the wiser. What would you choose?

no need to be sad you can still unlock bootloader and do everything you want except S-OFF as of now. Only if you are from verizon you are doomed. So head to HTCDEV unlock bootloader use hasoon toolkit for easy bootloader unlocking. flash twrp recovery. Download any custom rom you like and welcome. But keep in mind unlocking bootloader wipes complete 32gb storage so anything important must be backed up below is link for toolkit

it can void your warranty it usually always does if you report a issue with the device HTC will go "our records show you have unlocked the bootoader" and yea they pretty much refuse to fix your device. id wait till revone works on the latest hboot. can unlock without need to unlock via htc dev ^^
best of luck id go crazy having a android phone i couldnt flash ROM's on XD

You're on a 4.3 ROM. Just flash a custom kernel (ElementalX/teaMseven) and retry s-off. Once that's done, flash any RUU and everything will be good

for the time being you can't:
1- as there is no signed firmware available which you could flash while S-On
2- you can't seem to S-Off at the moment
3- anyway, it's just the "text" that's missing, so don't worry too much about it right now

If i understand correctly, this phone was converted to a Google play edition and you want it back to its original firmware and software? Original CID number and MID number are stored in partition mmcblk0p6.
You can pull mmcblk0p6 using an adb shell if you have root or if you have a custom recovery installed like twrp. Let me know if you have root or if you have a custom recovery and I'll explain you how to proceed.
You will also need s-off to change your cid and mid before running the ruu, if any avaiblabe for your original CID/MID

Just helped someone in a similar situation, this problem doesn't seem so bad for genuine GPE. If the Rom is still booting at least.
HTC dev doesn't work on GPE bootloaders anyway as far as I'm aware. You should use the command "fastboot oem unlock"
But in the above mentioned case that didn't work either. Sunshine app unlocked it and gave s-off though. So if it's locked with s-on but your able to boot your Rom I suggest getting Sunshine app to unlock and s-off before your completely FUBAR.

Unlocked bootloader with HTCDev.
Installed custom recovery with fastboot.
Installed SuperSU in recovery.
Device is then rooted but not S-Off
Installed Sunshine.
Paid $25 and it gave me S-Off.
I don't see why you'd have to activate as long as you have WiFi.
I don't know about activating, unfortunately.
