[Q] Moto X, Cyber monday, help - Moto X Q&A

Hi, i'm going to buy moto X with moto maker.
i've few question ,
1) which carrier should i choose ?? if i'm going to unlock and use my local carrier
2) i've been told that, motorola website will be accepted only US credit card.
Is that true ? I only have Thailand credit card. Are there any opportunities i can buy the Moto X
PS# i'm Thai
thx a lot

Just try it and see. Unless you have an American friend who can buy it for you off contract on the website. Or just purchase an online gift card or something do it that way. Look at Amazon.com see if they offer a similar deal on Cyber Monday

FWIW, Motorola has rejected both my Singapore and Malaysia credit cards. So you're pretty much out of luck if you're planning to use a non-US CC.
If you do manage to get the deal somehow, then first check which spectrums Thailand telcos use, and compare them with the individual telcos that support Moto Maker. I believe the T-mobile one, if it fits your telco, will come SIM-unlocked.

i'm going to try it.
and, you suggest me to get T-Mobile. how 'bout AT&T one ?

I believe the AT&T version is SIM locked. You might have to spend some money getting an unlock code for the phone online. In addition, the boot loader is (semi-)permanently locked, if that's a concern to you.

Read somewhere that all bought via the moto maker are locked... well, it does not matter, as the site is down.
you can get a t-mobile that is unlocked here http://www.motorola.com/us/Moto-X-for-T-Mobile/m-moto-x-tmobile.html but it is only availble in woven white/black and ONLY 16gb! for $349. There is NO 32gb option, and since google/moto removed the SD card, it is a no brainer that to use this phone for more than a year you need the 32gb version... so the t-mo is not an option
the dev for $399 is the only sensible option for cyber monday. no customization. ungliest color combo.
but at that price, you have to love the amoled selective pixels on thing. because the 32gb nexus 5 is pretty much more bang for the buck still. not that i'm getting either i need my SD slots

SIM unlock AT&T(from moto maker)

Hi. I am from Argentina and I bought a Customized Moto X from Moto Maker(AT&T). I have to unlock the phone for use it in my country. The bands are the same so that isn't a problem.
What page is the better for unlock the AT&T Moto X?
Thanks
Just go with the cheapest one you can find on eBay. I think I paid around $4 USD for my code. Most have money back guarantees so you don't lose anything if it doesn't work.

Yeah, that may be true. I have yet to receive a bad code, though, and I've always just done the cheapest listing on eBay for my codes.
Cellunlocker.net used them, only paid 7.99 and got the code in around 2 hours

Yeah, mine is unlocked and running on T-Mobile right now. I purchased from ripco-unlocks on eBay. It was only like $5 when I bought it, but they seem to have raised the price to $12 now.

No, but I don't see how that would make any difference. An XT1058 is an XT1058. The unlock code depends on the IMEI and those are all different regardless of whether the phone was the standard store model or a customized MotoMaker one.

I believie that T-Mobile version is sim unlocked so you don't need to buy any unlock codes.

Can USA bought moto x be unlocked ..?? How ?? To indian carrier

Hello xda developers .. As I have seen lots of carriers bring up huge data and carrier plan for 2 yrs with at & t .. Iam much worried of buying moto into India as unlocked one which costs higher !!
I'm planning to get of as a locked carrier with at & t @$199 .. Can it be unlocked for indian mobile carrier at easy rate ?? Or else guide me !!

You can unlock the locked one. However, it won't be easy to just get it for $199. AT&T requires a contract for that, and cancelling the contract costs $350. If you cancel within one month, you have to give the phone back. At $550 + the cost of one month of service, it will cost you more than the $600 that the unlocked one will cost you.

You're not going to find a Moto X for $250 anywhere right now. If you do, it's either stolen or fake.
Your best bet is to find a used Galaxy S3 or Nexus 4. Other than those, I don't think there are any phones with 2GB RAM anywhere near your price range.
Mine is unlcoked and I bought in US from Claro spanish version and it's working with all sims internationally.

Take a deep breath man! As someone already mentioned, there's no way to get a Moto X for 250. The lowest someone paid for theirs is 300. I myself got a brand new one for 350 on the local craigslist. Asked my friend to get it from the US. If you have any further questions, PM me. I'll try helping you out.

There isn't a way to get any relatively new phone for that price. Try ebay for used phones. Swappa is better, but I don't know if it works in your country.

Check here what bands of any variant match your indian carrier's bands. Most likely it's the T-Mobile variant, which is already unlucked at purchase.

[Q] exactly which versions can have bootloaders unlocked?

I found an XT1053 on eBay with a spanish user manual. Bought it assuming the bootloader would be unlockable on the motorola site but I was wrong. https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215 lists the supported devices but "Latin America" doesn't get too specific.
Anyone know how we can determine which devices can be bootloader unlocked? I'd hate to go through this again. Maybe I should have just spent the extra $100 for a t-mobile version... I sure do like the lack of carrier branding on this device.
A better way to answer would be:
All but Verizon and AT&T.

Sadly, it's not that simple. This is not an AT&T (XT1058) or Verizon (XT1060) but an XT1053. I believe it's a Nextel Moto X. It has a spanish manual, defaulted to spanish when setting it up, has an unused SIM card that says Nextel.
It was not able to be bootloader unlocked on the motorola site.

Cool. I thought I saw it with a T-Mobile logo on the back somewhere online but I could certainly be mistaken. There are no carrier apps installed on the T-Mobile version?
I think I'll just resell this one and buy the tmo or dev edition new straight from Motorola. Don't want to mess with eBay over and over trying to get one whose bootloader can be unlocked. I thought it was "not AT&T or Verizon" too but now I see that's not the case and it may just be a north american-centric view of the situation...

Frustrated with Swappa to buy my X

I'm trying to shop on Swappa for a Moto X and there is no way to discern carrier unlocked and bootloader unlocked..
What do I need to know about this phone when purchasing used? I cannot live without root and found a thread about the Chinaman that's unlocking phones again but only for phones manufactured this year.
Anything else I should know about?

It sounds like you want a GSM Moto X, correct?
If so, just find the T-MOBILE variant. The T-Mobile Moto X is essentially the "GSM Dev Edition". It is SIM-Unlockable (or already sim-unlocked), and unlike the AT&T variant, it has unlockable bootloader.....FREE, straight from the Moto website. (No intervention from China required) The model is XT1053
So don't rely on the sellers description...just make sure you buy the T-Mobile variant. (XT1053)
I agree with you...swappa can be confusing on these terms. According to swappa, "unlocked" is supposed to refer to SIM unlocked, NOT BL unlocked. But many of the sellers don't read these rules and some even assume that if they have used some exploit to root the device that it is "unlocked"....which of course is totally incorrect.
You should be safe so long as it you buy XT1053. If you're unsure, request the seller to verify. Just because it is listed under XT1053 doesn't mean the seller couldn't have made a mistake. The model number is on the bottom rear of the phone in small print.
EDIT: The 1053 MAY not have the model number printed on the bottom rear....but the AT&T model DOES (avoid it at all costs - AT&T model comes sim locked AND bootloader locked). Better yet, ask the seller to send you a screenshot from Settings > About Phone. Under "System Version" it will list the carrier. The XT1053 should say:
"161.44.25.ghost_row.Retail.en.US"
It is the ONLY variant to say Retail.en.US - all the other variants have a carrier name in the "System Version"
Actually, I wanted the Verizon version.. Sorry that I forgot to add that in..
I could care less if it is carrier unlocked . I don't travel outside the usa for now.

OK, then you have 2 choices.
1. Buy the Verizon Developer Edition. This is the only Verizon variant that can be Bootloader unlocked FREE via the moto website
2. All other VZW variants WILL come bootloader locked. If you can get the seller to confirm a 2014 build date, you may be able to get an unlock code from China, but there is no guarantee. He will also not tell you if he has the code unless you PAY for it....so there are absolutely no guarantees here.
Looking through the swappa website, I don't see any VZW developer editions for sale. This will be a tough one for you....unless you happen to come across one that explicitly says "unlocked bootloader", but this will mean that he HAD to have gotten code from China, and your warranty will be VOID.
I did find ONE VZW Dev edition on eBay here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-Mo...1199176524?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item2c845be74c
There is a second one listed, but at $549 I doubt you're interested. You could buy Direct from Motorola for less.
Also, CONSIDER purchasing direct from Motorola. Think about it....if you buy the VZW Dev edition direct from Motorola, you will be able to unlock for FREE, without losing your warranty. Additionally, there is a $100 "Jellybean Rebate" for trading in a qualifying USED device. One of the qualifying trade-ins is the "Motorola Admiral" which you can get used off ebay for about $20 shipped. Buy one and send it in for the $100 rebate! I've done this 4 times now (max of 5 rebates allowed per individual - one per each Moto X you buy) and have received all of my rebates.
http://www.motorola.com/us/consumer...Verizon/moto-x-developer-edition-verizon.html
Do the math:
$449.00 VZW Dev Edition direct from Motorola
+ 20.00 Motorola Admiral used from ebay
= $469.00
- $100.00 Moto Jellybean rebate
= $369.00
Assuming you get one of the cheapest VZW X's on swappa for about $250.00, you will still need to send $45 to China (with no guarantee of unlock, and definitely NO warranty) So you're just saving $80 over the brand new dev edition that you can DEFINITELY unlock, and that retains warranty even after unlock.
Good Luck with this.
Thank you for the heads up about the JB rebate

One small note... Per the docs that came with my X, the warranty on the X is non-transferable, so buying used off swappa, ebay, etc also invalidates the warranty.
Otherwise, everything else you posted is an awesome reply.

If you buy it TODAY or TOMORROW you can get it $100 off! The Dev edition is 349.99 -before- the rebate.
This would be the ideal time to purchase your VZW Dev Edition!
http://www.motorola.com/us/consumer...Verizon/moto-x-developer-edition-verizon.html
You may have already seen this, but I wanted to post it as a reply so you would get an email notification just in case you hadn't.
If you buy the $20 admiral for the JB rebate, you're looking at $269 after rebate.
Too late.. But thanks for all your effort
I am waiting for the Chinese. But, at least he's honest

Any Canadians Get a Moto Maker Moto X?

i got it when the preorder started.... but i have american credit cards.. had it shipped to my bro's place and he brought it over next time he came to town.. shame they don't have the moto maker in canada
I'm hoping to get in on the Moto Maker deal on Monday (I have relatives in the US, so I'm not so worried about shipping). The question I have is, are there any concerns about hooking it up to the Bell network? From what I'm seeing, I should get the "Pure Edition" and the bands look like they'd match up, but I'm hoping someone can verify that yes this will work before I drop $450 on a new phone

I might have to have my relatives help me out on that front, but as long as I can get the deal when the site is actually up, that shouldn't be a problem.
And thanks Steve-x for answering the bands question
Definitely a better plan than the Nexus 5 I was originally going to go for!
I bought a used Telus XT-1097 the other day, if not for that I was wanting the Pure edition as well as it is clearly the best model to buy. End of the day buying one locally that was like new for a fair price was just way easier then trying to get a US prepaid Visa. I didn't need to but I sim unlocked it for fun, it was less then 3 bucks for the code.
Will likely bootloader unlock and root after I've given it a really good test/workout.

You might want to wait until you get teh update before rooting and unlock boot loader.... seems I read in a few threads you have to flash back to a stock image to get the update....... unless of course your planning on flashing the XT1095 image.. but I'd research that first too...

Hi @Steve-x,
Can I ask where you bought the sum unlock code from? I checked cellunlocker.net and they quoted me $15?!
Cheers!

Yeah, I have been waiting so far. It doesn't look too bad though. With 4.4.4 the unroot option in SuperSU should handle things just fine, then flash stock recovery back. The only two things I really want are ad blocking and to enable the green light to indicate when the phone is charging. Might also do a custom boot animation, again easy to undo.
