Greetings,
I am in the market for a tablet and I am considering the Galaxy Tab 8.9. AT&T in the US is offering a deal where if you buy and activate an AT&T locked 8.9 Galaxy Tab you get a free Samsung Galaxy S2 or S2 Skyrocket.
Here are my questions:
1. What are the benefits or drawbacks from buying the AT&T branded and locked Galaxy Tab 8.9 versus the unlocked Galaxy Tab as shown here on Expansys: http://www.expansys-usa.com/samsung...16gb-android-tablet-black-850-1900-3g-223265/
2. Is the AT&T Galaxy Tab easy to unlock and use sim cards from other countries when traveling abroad?
3. Are there any other differences hardware wise between the AT&T Galaxy Tab and the one in the link above? I cannot find any and have checked multiple sites for information.
4. Would it be possible to flash the rom of the unlocked Galaxy tab to the AT&T Tab?
Any help or opinions greatly appreciated!
I will try to answer you the best I can.
1. AT&T version is faster and newer from my knowledge, but with far less developmental support. ATT supports 4g and LTE while the old tabs only do 3g and wifi. The older generation tablets have good developmental support with an ICS port in development. No custom ROMS at the moment for the ATT version.
2. No experience here, sorry.
3. The old tabs have tegra2 chips, while the ATT version uses qualcomm (snapdragon) chipsets. ATT is 1.5ghz while the 3g one is 1ghz. Both dual core. ATT battery capacity is ever so slightly larger as well. ATT version is 2 grams heavier (lol). The ATT one is considered snappier and more responsive from what i hear, but if the 3g one receives ICS then they could be comparable. The ROMS and Kernels from the older tabs are not compatable with the ATT LTE one. The closest thing to the ATT tablet is the Galaxy S II Skyrocket.
4. ATT Tab is only rooted at the moment through a custom kernel. No CWM or ROMS yet.
Hope this helps, and if I am wrong anywhere someone correct me. Thanks.
Thanks for your help that was very informative! I am still curious about the unlock on the AT&T version though because I travel a lot. Anyone else have any ideas about unlocking the AT&T Tab? I did several searches but could not find specific information for the AT&T version. Thanks.

2. It's unlockable online.
SIM unlock
Has the question about unlocking solved? I was looking at the tablet too and wanted to find a way to unlock it? Is there a way to do it after rooting it? I don't want to buy it from one of those unlock website.
Samsung confirmed the Galaxy S4 will support ANT+ in a firmware update coming later in October.
Question: Anyone knows if the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (i9295 and i537) is also going to get ANT+ in the next firmware update?
Any new information on this topic?
I am interesting too.
I am also interested. Is a hack possible?
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini that was brought to me because the user was experiencing trouble connecting to the T-mobile network. There would be cell service for about an hour, after which all service would be lost. The problem is reported to have started after performing an update a few weeks ago, which the user thinks was a firmware update. Now, the phone receives no cell service at all. I should also add that the phone was purchased through Groupon, and because of that they were told (by T-mobile) that they'd have to send the phone to China if they want it fixed.
Now this is where it starts getting pretty complicated. First, I tried checking the phone's IMEI number on imei.info. The result shows a Motorola W375 flip phone, not the Galaxy S3. I'm not sure what this means. Secondly, the model number of the phone is GT-I8200L which means that it's for the Latin American market. But it was working for 2 months, so I'm guessing it's not an issue with the hardware?
I'm pretty tech-savvy, but I'm by no means an expert when it comes to fixing phones, so I have no idea what to do at this point. The phone doesn't appear to be unlocked, since my (non-T-mobile) SIM card doesn't work. I'm finding lots of articles for things like "flashing firmware" and whatnot, but I don't know whether this would help. Maybe it's a lost cause at this point?
I'd greatly appreciate any help!
Its a known problem with a Samsung update! There must be a new OTA update from Samsung! Try this!

Thanks for your reply! But there seems to be no new updates. It says that the latest updates are already installed. The Android version is 4.2.2.
Where you from?

We'll currently I'm in the market to buy a phone I really want the note 3, plus I can afford it :/ wish I could afford note 4 but oh well, have more important stuff to buy, anyways if I bought a note 3 from AT&T would it come with 4.3 an I can root ? Or update to where I want like 4.4.2 an root? Or will the AT&T have to phone updated to latest 4.4.4? If it came with 4.4.4 could I root or would that matter on what kernal it's on?
I'm new to android world an wanting to learn been doin a lot research on note 3 but there not much info about 4.4.4 with a root for AT&T/ Verizon models, mostly every thing is 4.3 or 4.4.2 or other models (Such as T-mobile, Sprint, International models), but also what r the chances for a future root? Maybe 6month from now or a root with lollipop 5.0? Is it likely or not so much cause don't seem like no dev. Is working on 4.4.4 root for AT&T/ Verizon Model cause we know the bootloader is locked
With all that said would you still recommend Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or should I buy a different phone? Like iPhone 5S something within these two devices price range? :/
Anyways please message your thought or what do you think the best idea is?
all good
The Note 3 is so good anyway it ships I believe you will be very happy as is. I would root what ever you get and then put 5.0 on when it is out.
Literally on my way to purchase a LTE Galaxy Tab S2 but don't know if I should get the Verizon or Tmobile version. I want the Verizon one but if it can't be rooted without losing LTE, then I will settle for the Tmobile version.
Anyone wants to chime in? I did a quick search but didn't find a clear, straightforward answer.
TIA!

If you know the model number . Maybe it's easier to identify if it's rootable or not .

Damn, I don't know it. I ordered it in-store and it should be delivered eitehr tomorrow or Tuesday. I guess I will keep my fingers crossed that I get a model that is rootable.
Seeing that the Tab S2 for Verizon is not rootable because of the locked bootloader, I have decided to return it and ordered the Asus Zenpad Z10 instead.
I see that the Asus Zenpad Z8 has already been rooted, so i expect the Z10 will probably be rootable as well.
Now I'm wondering if the Tab S2 was a better buy all things considered, over the Zenpad Z10.
