[Q] unlock unroot? - Sprint HTC One (M7)

I rooted my HTC One and unlocked the bootloader a while ago. I flashed the Venom rom so I assumed I was rooted. However, I did root checker recently and it said I wasn't rooted. How is this possible? I recently asked Sprint to unlock my phone for international usage. Would that unroot my phone? I thought once I rooted my HTC One, it would be rooted permanently?

Are you s-off? Some people were having root problems after flashing 4.3 roms. Re flash viper and choose the s-on option if your s-on.

Yes I'm S-On. Does this mean I have to re-root my phone again? What if I want to flash another 4.3 rom (like Bad Boyz) or a 4.4 (like Beanstalk)?

To answer your question about flashing other roms. If you can still get into custom recovery aka TWRP or CWM. You should still be able to flash ROM's . I suggest you look into getting s-off it seems a lot of problems like yours don't happen when your phone is s-off. Do a Google search on getting s-off and you will find 3 methods that I know of to gain s-off. Make sure you read through each thread thoroughly so you are using the right method for your bootlloader version. I used revone to gain s-off which was really easy. There are also some good you tube videos that take you through the process. The best advice I can give you regarding any changes you are making to your device is research every thread that you can and make sure you understand exactly what you are doing beforehand. The forums are filled with questions from people who could have avoided a lot of trouble just by doing more research. Hope this helps.

[Q] Install AT&T OTA Update with unlocked bootloader?

So I'm wanting to install the OTA ICS update but it fails and I get the little red exclamation point when I try.. I am assuming this is because my bootloader is unlocked? I've been trying to find a way to install it but the only one I found was one requiring S-OFF which I don't have..
So basically my question is can I install ICS on my rooted unlocked bootloader?
If absolutely necessary I can always lock it, install, then re unlock it but that's such a pain.. AT&T gets on my nerves sometimes..
I am almost positive that you have to do the re-lock process unless somehow they found another way. You should probably read around next time. Most likely, someone has already asked your question.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA
I've read quite a few threads but haven't been able to find anything.. and like I said, I did find one but it requires S-OFF and the juniper thing, or whatever to lazy to look up the name right now lol, is not released yet.. and I haven't been able to find another way to get S-OFF..
If you want ics that bad you have to do it like every one else here...there is no reason to whine cause your to lazy to relock the bootloader ..it take all of about three mins for me to relock mine ... and about 20 min to do the whole process...you don't need s off to get ics if your using the vivid or velocity. there's no place for lazy people here so please just do it like ever one else or do with out
I'm fully aware you don't NEED S-OFF to get ICS its the only way I have found to do it with an unlocked bootloader if you even bothered to read my post. And if your going to be rude and unhelpful stay out of my thread, people like you are why forums loose members. I simply asked a question I never said I was lazy and wouldn't do it I was simply looking for an easier alternative.
The S-OFF is obviously a mistake, because if it was S-OFF then you wouldn't have to do fastboot oem lock.
Yes, you have to relock the bootloader. Make sure you kept your unlock_code.bin or else you might not be able to unlock the bootloader again.
To be extra safe you should flash stock recovery before you do anything.
Quick question going along with this, it may be stupid, I just wanted to make sure before I try anything: I'm currently on RumRaider and I want to switch to ICS. If I were to revert to stock and relock and then do the OTA update to ICS from AT&T, can I still get root with the same zergrush application or whatever that I used before?

Your best bet is to relock the boot loader then run the ruu for the vivid then re unlock and do your flashes

Hmm well OTA still kept failing for me, even after relocking the bootloader.. I ended up having to download the RUU from HTC Support and install it through my computer using HTC Sync.. which kinda sucked but it still at least installed ICS..

There are plenty of options out there. Since you now have an updated HBOOT, flash a recovery image and CWM a rooted stock ROM.

Thanks for the help guys. I relocked the bootloader and ran the RUU, then did the OTA. After that I used the noob proof tool thing in the dev forums and installed the WCX recovery and then rooted with the same tool as well. Currently typing on it, and loving it!

Edit: just took a peek at it, and it looks like it's mostly patching files in system, rather than flashing an all new system image. But the new version looks like it's "1.08.502.4".
i got a update notice 2 days ago but i already have twrp recovery and couldnt update with that recovery.
My wife's is not unlocked yet hopefully this isn't Att blocking the unlock process. Because the thing is just going to do it probably before I get a chance tonight. But I wouldn't put it past them. They have been trying to get HTC to exclude our Att phones from dev unlock since HTC put up the site...

according to s-off crew, moonshine is most likely blocked with this OTA. There is a possible workaround and I will be doing the procedure this weekend and posting up a tutorial if it works.
If I am unlocked, rooted and have s-off can i safely take the update? It automatically started downloading on my phone and the only thing I can do to stop it is turn off all data.
A prompt response is highly appreciated, thank you.

If you have a custom recovery(and why wouldn't you?) then you have nothing to worry about. It won't update with a custom recovery. It will just fail and that's it.

Question on the s-off front. My wife had to take the update before I could stop it but she doesn't want s-off anyway. My question is if it is needed for anything I would want to do... Such as running a 4.2.2 Sense 5 port from the htc mini... I have the htc one and I know that there was no real good reason for s-off(i did it anyway of course...) but I also know each phone is a little different. So thus my question... Sorry if this is too noobish...

no. fastboot flash boot boot.img solves all problems. but s-off is non-destructive on the data so if you want to give it a try and report back it would be appreciated. It would save me time this weekend.
But I understand its the wife's. My wife won't let me touch her phones after the first 4 hours....lol

I unlocked the bootloader, installed cmw in fastboot usb mode, flashed the superuser then relocked the bootloader and everything worked fine. I installed the awesome beats package too without having to unlock the boot loader.

Yes this is a bug with s-off. Not just the aftermarket s-off. This is even happening with factory s-off devices. Not really sure what is causing it. Sometime I will sit down and try to get a dmesg and logcat of it to determine what is going on.

Usually lurk but since i've been exactly where you are wanted to try and help you out
Flash Sprint Rom back onto the phone, I used stock 1.29 wipe then install a custom rom for that specific phone. Good luck
Also forgot to mention if you can't get a rom to install in TWRP or whatever recovery you're using try a adb sideload, or just follow the wizard. I used the sideload in Hasoons AIO toolkit. I know my phone wasn't staying on long enough to stay connected to the computer to install anything. Here's the RUU you need http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=22979706399752930. Hey there. Did you install ViperRom or ViperOne? Because there will be two different fixes depending on what you did.
If you flashed ViperRom the solution is easy you probably got a bad download or flash. Download the Rom again and follow this guide

Just received my HTC One and I have a few questions

I have always been a fan and user of Nexus devices, and I was waiting for Nexus 5 to come out but then eventually I chosen HTC One over the Nexus. I bought the unlocked version of HTC One from Amazon. The Phone came with 4.2 but I received the 4.3 OTA update.
The bootloader shows that the phone is locked and S-ON.
My questions are; will unlocking the bootloader wipe everything -used to do so with the Nexus? If it does wipe everything; will the software version remain 4.3 or a downgrade to 4.2 takes place?
Also, would converting S-ON to S-OFF wipe anything?
The warranty is not an issue here for me.
Another question; I've Googled everywhere and to change the lock screen setting was through Settings>Personalize>Lock screen. The look screen is non existent under "Personalize" in my phone. A screenshot is attached.
Thanks in advance!
Unlocking the bootloader via htcdev.com will wipe your data, but the system will stay on 4.3.
Probably you have hboot version 1.54 or 1.55, so you will have to use rumrunner to get S-Off. Doing that will not wipe anything.
The personalize options for the lockscreen are gone with Sense 5.5 / Android 4.3.
They simply removed that.
But you can now scroll to the right on your lockscreen to add lockscreen widgets. (Multiple pages, not just one like before the 4.3 update).

Should be possible to root without installing custom recovery :
1)Unlock via htcdev.
2)S-off via rumrunner.
3)Root using this tool :

Hi the answer is yes and no.
Depends on your usage.
Leaving stock recovery installed to be honest doesn't really have any benefits and 9 times out of ten s-off removes the feature to recieve OTA updates.
Your best option to be honest is to s-off using rummrunner and install firmware and rom you want. If you dont want to modify anything on the phone then there is no point in achieving s-off as you can risk hard bricking your device.
Any Questions Give me a shout.

For the time being, I want just to root my phone. Later on I may consider converting into GPE. Do I have to unlock the bootloader and/or s-off before rooting? Or can I root the phone directly? Thanks again!

Should be possible to root without installing custom recovery :
1)Unlock via htcdev.
2)S-off via rumrunner.
3)Root using this tool :

Hey no your going to need to flash custom recovery I'm afraid there is no one click method for HTC one. So your going to need to flash custom recovery to allow any form of rooting as you need to flash the superuser repository onto your phone you can't simply just intstall the all and hope for the best.
Wouldn't bother with gpe either.
Been there done that it's crap.
All the things that make this phone good come from HTC sense.
And again unless you have any actual need to flash any custom roms to the phone I would hold off rooting or s-off on your phone. Most people loose the ability to OTA update and also htcdev collect the imei of your phone invalidating the warranty.
And there is absolutely no way to root without unlocking boot.
Hope this helps Kris

I bought the phone from the US but I'm using it abroad, and the warranty is not working where I am now.
I just need some Apps that requires rooting, but I think I will hold a bit.
Thanks a lot Kris

Hmm that is strange. The only thing I can think of is if you have some form of aosp aspects installed on your phone. Download es file explorer enable root browser and view the system apps and see if there is two phone all's installed. It's bot uncommon to have system all's from aosp roms installed. I have three cameras lol sense one cyanogen one and the nexus one lol

Help....with everything to do with rooting?

Well, I just came over from the iPhone, but I've had an Android phone before that I rooted, but now it seems much more complicated.
Where do I start? I'd like to get the bad boy rom installed, but I don't know where to start. I have the HK version on Sprint. Any help would be appreciated.

I saw that, but what would I do to get the bad boys rom properly installed? Would it be ready to just follow they're installation instructions completely or would it require me to do other steps prior?

You need to follow the instructions in that thread
Unlock boot loader
Flash recovery in fastboot from PC using adb with fastboot commands
Make a nandroid/backup of your stock rom
Place the SuperSu.zip on your sdcard and flash in recovery to obtain root. If you want root on stock ROM or you can just simply flash the BadBoys ROM it already comes Rooted.
Just read the OP of threads and educate yourself on what you are doing. You can learn a lot by simply taking time to read thru things thoroughly. Maybe read the same things more than once to completely understand what you are doing.
As far as the BB ROM you are already on the HK firmware. You might wanna look into obtaining Soff it makes things easier on this phone

Here is a link to soff it cist I think like $25 but it is well worth it. I don't know what version you are on 4.4.2 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 cause you just got this phone but read the op of this thread to see if you will be able to obtain soff

Alright. I was able to succesfully root my phone, but now I'm a little confused on how to get the ROM I want. I'm not willing to pay for a ROM without seeing what I need/like first, so I figured I'd try some out. I was looking at Android Rev HD. Would I be able to flash that ROM if I'm still on 4.4.2? Also, whats the best way to get any app I'd might want? Sorry for the newb questions. I'm just trying to be extra cautious.

All Roms are free the only thing that cost is the S-off tool which is sunshine.
Put it this way since you are S-on you basically have to take the official OTA all the way up to 4.4.4 cause you are on 4.4.2.
If you want to flash any ROM that is based on a version other than what you are currently on you will have issues.
For example you are on 4.4.2 and have the firmware that comes with that version. Every time we receive an update on our phones are H-boot, recovery and firmware are also flashed with an ota. The only way to upgrade your firmware being S-on is to basically put stick recovery back and be 100% stick than take ota
S-OFF allows you to by pass the crappy part having to take the entire OTA. With S-Off you can flash just the firmware and or HBoot/recovery without taking the ota.
In order to run the newer Roms that are 4.4.4 you have to no if and or buts most definitely have to be on the firmware that is for 4.4.4 and also it is recommended to update your Hboot along the way cause if you aren't in the latest firmware you will have issues like no WiFi and long as hell boot times so if I was you I would S-off for 25$ before I even went past 4.4.2

Alright, I guess I'll have to go S-Off. Once I do go S-Off, whats the proper way to get to 4.4.4? Is there a guide anywhere?

Alright, that's done. Now I'm just having trouble deciding what ROM I want to use. I like a minimalist look, but nothing too barebones, and I'd definitely like bloatware to be gone. (or at least know the proper way to uninstall it)

Well that's entirely up to you. Just read the op and see what the ROM is all about. Flash it if its not your cup of tea than you can restore your backup and keep looking.

Ended up getting Digitalhigh's GPE 5.0 ROM. I wasn't able to backup before I flashed the ROM though, because I did a factory wipe of all data in TWRP, and lost my backup with that. But I was able to flash the ROM succesfully, and it's running great. If I wanted to revert back to Stock ROM how would I go about doing that? Also, what about going to different Custom ROMs? And last question. Where's the best place to find some cool apps. I'd really like a one where I can download movies/tv shows if possible.
Also, thanks a million times. I think I've got the jist of things now, and feel pretty confident venturing on my own. I really appreciate everyone being patient with me.
