Hi, due to several defects, many have chosen to send back the nexus 5 to receive a new one. infa89, a member of an Italian forum, had the following defects:
dancers and noisy buttons
SIM tray protruding
"cutting edge" display frame.
Comparing the old with the new phone, he noticed several differences, as you can see in the picture.
The new one has none of the above defects, it has
fixed buttons
larger microphone and speaker holes
more yellow display
green stuck pixels.
Someone else has noticed differences between his nexus and replaced one?
Mine has the small speaker holes, I bet that's why it buzzes through the whole phone.
Goddammit, now my phone feels second rate! :crying:
You know just yesterday I was looking at the speaker holes thinking they are probably too small to let the sound out easily.
RMA? Because of buzzy sound?
Edit...Yeah my buttons are fine too, and it's a 311
Oddly I have the tight fitting buttons, but the speaker/mic grille look to be the smaller ones.
I have a 311k btw

my 32 gb white had the small holes, rattling buttons, microphone problems during recording, as well as backlight bleeding.
I immediately sent it back, but still waiting for the new.

Where are you checking this?
seems like i should return my nexus 5 to goole
Not sure what mine is.
When i boot into the bootloader, there is something there that says:
HW VERSION - rev_11
---------- Post added at 09:58 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:57 AM ----------
By rattling buttons, you mean if you just shake the phone? Because mine rattle a little, but its not a problem. No backlight bleed or small holes though.

Hi,
On the box?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534423.
EDIT: turn your head, I forgot to rotate the picture, sorry
I have the larger speaker holes from the 16GB I purchased from Best Buy for Sprint but the original 32GB I ordered on the Play Store had the smaller holes. However, the volume on this new handset is much much worse.

I have no evidence to back this, but the couple I've seen from carriers all seem to be defect free while the ones from Google play seem to have issues. Esp the white ones. Just throwing out a random thought

I feel lucky now...got mine from play and it has the larger holes. I've been very pleased with everything...I did have a panic attack earlier when I dropped my phone and suddenly the vibrator stopped working...took my case off and heard a snap...I guess the cover came off or something? But now its working fine...
Only thing I noticed as far as defects is slight light bleeding on the edge of the screen in the corner. But I'm not anal enough to care...its only noticabke when the screen is black at night...

310K or 311K only indicates the build date. HW Revisions is more important!

OMG, i love this joke.
I'm not even kidding. It has been a running gag for months in my environment.
But back to the topic:
It wouldn't be surprised by updated "outer hardware" as the Nexus 4 also got updated with these "gummish-spike-thingies" on its back against slipping.
Related
My initial Nexus 4 has a small hole in the centre of the backlight through which light escapes when viewed from any sort of angle. It's quite distracting, so I've elected to send it back. I've only seen one other user with this defect.
Half the threads on this forum are about problems people are having, and each seems to have a respectable number of vocal sufferers. But people come here because they have these problems, and it's tough to determine how the average customer is making out.
I'm mostly curious because I have no idea what to expect of the replacement I receive. Glue blotches? Who knows.
I wonder what the actual % is. Poll up top for those interested.
I have the speaker problem but i can not hear it. My buddy's N4 has it has well. He said he thinks his is worst on his phone. Because i can not hear it i do not think there is a problem. Over all i have been very happy with the phone. I can't wait for Franco to get his so we can get some better kernels.
These results will always be obscured. People that don't have a reason to complain usually won't make a thread saying" hey got my phone today, works as expected"

I'm the only person I've seen posting with my defect -- the camera LED doesn't work, no flash, no flashlight. I'm obviously getting a replacement, shipped today.
Mine has a yellow tint on the bottom half of the screen. Replacement was shipped out today
My Nexus 4 locks up in deep sleep (while charging usually). In order to restart the phone, I have to hit Power + Vol Down which shows me the charging animation, afterwhich I can hit power to start the phone. I've already wiped the phone and flashed the stock 4.2 image from Google, and uninstalled any applications known to be incompatible. Seems to be a hardware issue so I requested an RMA.
Mine acted odd but, sometimes when I have a notification, I can't wake the device's screen forcing me to do a power cycle.
To the guy above me, to reset the device all you need to hold is the power button...

Had a speck of dust stuck between the screen and the display. It was super annoying at first because there was a glue "halo" around it, which dried up and it ended up looking like a huge dead pixel.
Replacement arrived fine, but I have had a problem with both phones rebooting constantly when pushing them. It's starting to really piss me off.
Anyone else notice the vibration function is off sometimes. At time its feels great like it should, but other times it feels a little too strong, like it's a little loose.
Overall I'm really happy with the phone; everything is perfect.

I think I have a similar problem. Somewhere in the middle of the screen there's a really small, slightly distorted little spot that's brighter than everywhere else. It bugs me whenever I see it, I was contemplating sending it in.

The reason I haven't sent it in yet is because I'll probably just be trading one defect for another. It'll come back with the speaker hiss or yellow screen.

When you come to a forum about hardware you will have a high rate of people who have faults, that is natural as people come to ask. You can only find out for yourself and luckily the consumer is protected by law for the first 30 days or whatever they have to decide they aren't happy with it.
The build quality does look quite shocking though.
Hope they don't pass all the replacement directly to LG like what they did on Galaxy Nexus after receiving too many replacement call.

I have a thin vertical blinking line to the of my screen it strechches the entire length of the screen.its noticible on any color background but white seems the worst as the line appears pink.I called Google today they should be sending a replacement this week.its ashamed other then the line the phone seems flawless but a line down the entire screen isn't something I can overlook
I am just now getting screen banding, obviously a defect. kinda frustrating..
Hello,
Been following this thread for a couple months now, almost bought the xz, but seeing both took their sweet time to launch and one's finally available...
So just returned from a mall, seen it in 2 stores, live.
It looks really nice just as pictured by everybody in these forums. The screen looks amazing, very sharp, cannot compare to anything else. Sound thru loudspeakers best I heard in a phone.
However..
The built quality seemed to lack.. Alot.
The metal parts didn't seem to be aligned properly to the point where visually they were protruding out; the corners felt rugged, especially where the metal will stick out. There were minor gaps, albeit too visible on both models.
Now, surely I have heard about these possible issues. Wasn't too worried before as consider myself less picky about things in general. But after seeing the store model, I am a little worried. I know I get to bring it back if not happy my question is how the store demo version compares to the actual thing? Aren't the demo units supposed to be better, at least in build quality? One thing I am sure of, will carefully inspect it in store.
As an aside, all my phones past 10 years bought online: I wouldn't take the same chance with one whatever return policy.

I had a few issues with build quality on my first few handsets , rough edges etc and then on my last one (which didn't suffer from the capptive button problem) I decided to just take care of the rough edges myself and used a bit of 2000 wet and dry sand paper on the polished edges and white band, now have a perfect handset

Pixel issues are going to increase as pixel density has more than doubled over the last few years. No way around it. We also need to remember that it is in no way HTC fault and that every single phone manufacturer has similar failure rates.
From what a fair few people on here have said, the most recent builds are fixing these issues.
I myself have a model with very minor build quality issues but it's not enough to make me want to get a replacement or switch to another phone.
The phones so good that these minor issues can be overlooked, by me at least.

Checked a little bit on the issues I seen or heard of before, mechanically it's almost perfect, alignment and all, no dead or stuck pixels, call quality seems alright, sound recording and playback.
The only issue if I may say so, on maximum volume there's a bit of distortion on loudspeakers.
I will get to play more with it this weekend, can hardly wait, but so far it seems like a nice replacement for my sgs2.

Yeah I'm usually not very anal about those kinds of things but I must admit that the headphone jack is pretty bad. Like mine is halfway on the aluminum casing almost. It's not in the center of the plastic between the aluminum at all like the power button. Is this normal?

The position matches position where digitizer is normally, but it has just weird pattern. Thanks for answer

My first N4 didn't have this, but after doing an RMA the replacement did. They may have started using a different digitizer or something. Another interesting thing is that my replacement device doesn't seem to have much of an oleophobic coating either.

I can see both, the dots and this pattern on my device (on strong sunlight).
Only time I can see mine is if I lock the screen and angle it under light... even then its hard to tell...
Same here-i just received my Nexus 4 3 days ago and I immediately noticed the pattern( I used to have the Galaxy Nexus). It is most visible at sunlight in an angle with the screen off. I figured it was normal...I understand now that almost everyone has it...
My first N4 had no visible screen pattern, although in daylight I could see the dot matrix, wasn't a big deal though. However, I recently RMA'd due to a vaulty earpiece and my new N4 has the same pattern in the OP. Very annoying, visible when the phone's off but can also be seen, on occasion, when the phone's on. I don't know if my OCD will last much longer...I'm fighting the urge to RMA again.

I have had problems with the build quality! I got my phone from Carphone Warehouse (UK) on Friday, I noticed a dead pixel and that the vibration was really loud (sounded cheap) so I took it back, the 2nd one I got the power button rattled like mad, I swapped it again and the same thing is happening with the power button. I am sick of it now and although the software is superb I cannot deal with the build quality. I'm now on the hunt for a different phone.

I can imagine it being annoying but lets not forget the iPhone 5s has many reports of loose/rattly power buttons too and they cost double of what the Nexus 5 costs.
Not making excuses for LG/Google but even Apple isn't immune to this.
Recently I even saw an article about the Note 3 having a loose or crooked home button. In all reality nothing is perfect, there is a margin of error allowed for every phone that comes off of the line that's just how it goes.
I don't think the build quality is the best, it feels quite cheap and feels as if it could break easily. The Gorilla Glass 3 feels amazing to touch though!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
And that's why I wait for the problems to iron themselves out before I order a new phone.
power button is fine on mine however the volume button edges are razor sharp and seem quite rough.
Anyone else have this?
nexus 4 first releases had issues with the buzz noise in the ear piece. risks of being a pioneer user for the phone? At least you can freely get it replaced for now. after I RMA'd, I received one with perfect build quality. Keep trying!
Must be lucky then, no dead pixels here and any noticeable backlight bleed and the buttons are fine apart from being slighly rough on the sides. Cant fault the build quality here and I would say you're simply unlucky, 1 dead pixel is nothing in a display and for just a simple thing as the button rattling when you shake it... who shakes their phones? This reminds me of the silly thread in the N4 section where the autofocus for the camera caused a rattle when you shook the phone yet alot of people went OCD on it and were livid on such a small issue.
First part with the dead pixel I believe is fair but you replaced it and got one that didnt have a dead pixel so BQ doesnt sound like an issue...

Just out of curiosity has anyone elses buttons rattle when you shake the phone. Im only asking as a point of reference. I know many will say it theirs doesn't but lets be honest Iv heard it a million times then I go to a store and try a a few and find they all do to some extent. It would be great to hear from those that have the phone and honestly,
hey if it rattles it rattles it will just be the way its made that results in a rattle. I would think it strange though that LG would put so much effort into making ceramic buttons for durability and longevity then not fit them properly on production.
so I would suggest this is probably normal although i never tried shaking the phones I had hands on today though,
The ones I had hands on did have a sharp edge to the buttons. Didn't bother me though its simply the type of material they are made from. Its not like it will cut off a digit and nice that it felt solid. It also had a nice click to them as well when using them.
When I get me N5, if the only issue it has is a rattling power button I will be more then ecstatic and consider that one hell of a device.
I wouldnt care as long as dust doesnt get in the screen Im fine. HTC always had that issue. Plus I am getting a case so I am not worried.
Solution to your button problems:
Get a decent case, like the Spigen Neo Hybrid: HERE

Tbh in all the ones Iv held there isnt much to go wrong. Unless there is any noticeable pixel issues.
the only thing i foresee as being a common fault cry will be the back plate and any gaps between the edge of this and where it meets the phones frame because its secured in with clips around the backplate. So its logical to assume that since its not glued or screwed down at every point around the device there will be points that you would be able to get a nail under and bend/flex a bit more than other points.
However this is not a fault its just through the way its secured down.
Besides this and the sharp edge of the buttons there is really nothing else to be faulty on this. Earpiece and speaker all seems to be of good quality and screen is gorgeous.
Like everything else there will be the odd faulty one that slips though but im pretty surprised at how well this seems to be put together

I don't mean to start an internet war here but this is nothing new. People complained about this from the Nexus 4 and many other phones before it. It's a pretty damn common thing and not really something to get upset about. RMAing the device will most certainly yield the same results with the new phone so what's the big fuss about?
Besides, as soon as you throw a case on the phone (as many of us do) it's moot anyway. And if you don't want to use a case just do what this guy did. Simple fix.
I wasnt looking for a war, i was just curious about the number of people who do have rattling to the number who dont.
Makes sense I suppose. I just think you can expect a large number of people saying "yes". In reality this is common with Android smartphones, in my experience.
No rattling here.

the only creaking i had there was the battery cover
How loose is loose? Mine rattles only when I shake it and put it to my ear, but I've yet to notice it on daily use. Does that count as normal, or rattling.
EDIT- Even when I move the phone around in front of my face I can barely hear it.. Physically it rattles, though, so I'm not sure what to say. Maybe I've got real bad hearing...

Can't post a poll in another thread and can't really tell how many people are complaining about it and how many arent :/
Mine rattles every time I tap the button for the quick settings shade. But so far that's the only thing I have found to complain about on mine. So if that's all, I think I can live with it or fix it.

I opened my nexus up and applied the paper fix. However, while I was there I noticed that it wasn't so much the button rattling.. It was mostly coming from the sim tray area. No idea how to fix that.. I'm gonna try adding a layer of tape to the branded side of the sim card to see if it can mute any other noise

my cell phone I have sent to manufactor and the keys were repaired
I received mine in mid december, and i have not had this issue.
granted, my phone is in a case 24/7; but even in a case, im not having this issue
This is a common ailment many devices have. No big deal.

Mine rattles a little, but it doesn't bother me at all and I couldn't possibly care less.
Mine would rattle every time I would tap the screen. It got annoying quick, so I took it back and got it replaced. The new one is much more solid and doesn't rattle.

IMO all has button rattle. The phone design has too much distance tolerance between from PCB button switch and the actual buttons. so based on PCB location when assembly of the phone. It can make button rattle either volume or power button. some might have less some might have more depending on the position of PCB. I've RMAed my phone for button rattle for 5 times. and all had rattle. some has less but still there.
The iPhone 4 has this problem too, and does my nexus 5 so i pretty much got used to it.
Could just be some people's OIS camera. It can make a sound if shaken.
