You know you're rooted when..... - Nexus 5 General

This was a good topic back on the SGS2 I frequented, now there is a new mix of people in this forum, it might be fun to start the thread up again.
One I said back on the SGS2 thread, you know you're rooted, and stubborn about it, when somebody asks "why root?" And you say, after 2 minutes of thinking "so you can run root apps, obviously" then walk away from the conversation.
Also, you know you're rooted when every fastboot command is burnt into your brain, much like IDDQD and IDKFA.

you dont need root to fastboot, it makes no difference if you are or arent.

....sigh....
Great way to get into the spirit of the thread.
But if you have no intention of rooting, what use is fastboot OEM unlock, hmmm?

you do not need root to unlock your bootloader, you do not need root to use fastboot again and flash a recovery, you do not need root to flash or use custom kernels, you do not need root to flash and use custom roms, and you do not need root to flash and use many mods. the only thing that you need root for is to use root enabled apps.
at least make accurate statements.

Where did I say you do?
The implication was, if you're rooted you're more likely to know every fastboot command. At least make accurate accusations.
EDIT: Stop being argumentative just for the sake of it. Some people seem to argue about things nobody should really give a crap about.

You know you're rooted and nexus when you lol at other phones barely announcing their OTA updates that you've installed a few months ago.

You know you're rooted when your phone dies and LG charges you for a replacement.

You know you're rooted when you can delete /system

... when you know how important backups are, especially EFS
I never backed up before I started playing with system settings...

You know you're rooted when everyone is trying to call you and you have to explain to them that you were in recovery...

You know you are rooted when you spend more time flashing roms than using your phone

You know you are rooted when in a week you change kernel more times than underwear

You know you're rooted when your face freezes in a confused look for 5+ minutes every time someone tells you that they're NOT rooted.

How to Keep google from knowing what you have done to your nexus thread

*Okay so this is one of my first posts on this forum so please cut me some slack if I've made a mistake*
My Nexus seven tablet came in the mail today and I've been doing a lot of research on rooting it and installing a kernel. I've searched around the site using the search tool and looked around as much as I can but I just can't seem to find anything talking about how to completely reset the entire tablet as if it just came out of the box; the reason I'm asking this is because I plan on rooting it and installing my own kernel. The problem is I don't want to actually void the warranty in the situation that something were to happen to it that is covered by the warranty, I could reset the tablet completely and send it back to them without them knowing it was ever flashed or rooted!!
The question: there are programs out there that can be used on the computer and the device itself that will allow the user to completely reset the device using a backup taken from the device before any modifications are done to it; what are some programs that sound like those specifications, where can I get it and how can I use it?
ANY help will be rewarded with thanks

This is all that you need, download the factory image you need for your tablet and flash it with nexus root tool 1.52, it's an all in one application that allows you to unlock, root, install cwm and even flash images back to stock. When you flash a google factory image it will wipe the entier tablet and install the stock kernel.
Other than that you're good to go.

dang, didn't even notice it . Updated my previous post, thanks!
It's a Nexus device. You don't have to worry about anything. If needed, download the factory image directly from Google, flash it, and fastboot oem lock to relock the bootloader. Good as new.
It doesn't matter what you have done on your nexus. Warranty covers manufacturer defects (screen lift, other defects people had, etc) and not damages from misuse (dropping it in water, bricking it by flashing a bad file, etc)
It's a Nexus device, made for unlocking and rooting. Google doesn't care one bit. If it has a hardware defect, they will replace it. They built these devices to be as open as possible for you to do anything you want with it.
They even go above and beyond for you to let you hack it and still have a great experience. Originally you couldn't view rented movies on a rooted system because of the movie licensing they had, they went and worked on changing that so rooted users can rent them too now.
Since Google talked about hacking their devices at Google I/O ... I don't think they care anymore ... the only reason they disable some apps due to root is to protect its content .. DRM protected content and like your Wallet
But just as a note ... flashing any factory image will restore your device completely ... so back up all photos, videos, etc ... stuff that isn't stored on the cloud

If you want updates after you root you have to flash them yourself. It's not that big of a deal, just like flashing anything else. Please don't try to OTA update a rooted device.

Girl into Droid!

Hello everyone!
My name is Anastasia, I am 19 years old, from London.
Yesterday, I bought myself (thanks to my payday) a brand new Asus Google Nexus 7, 32gb, from Argos (shop).
I keep reading what you get with root, and it made me WANT to root it.
Here's my information:
Nexus 7
JOP40D
4.2.1
So, the tablet is brand new, and I HAVEN'T touched it, except when I downloaded few Apps. So, all I want, is to ROOT it in the safest and easiest way. I am scared that it brakes? Anyways, what is the FIRST step? I need it rooted and ready to rock. (Themes, Hide bar, etc.). What, Should, I, Do? Thanks a lot to everyone! I hope I can make it? Take care xoxo

Don't worry. The Nexus 7 is almost unbrickable (can't break it by messing with the software).
You should definatly root it, and when you get the knowladge of what you are doing get a custom recovery, and flash a new ROM, maybe a theme. Trust me you just got a device running android. It's never ending fun. :highfive:
Here you go. http://xda-university.com/.

U can try wugfresh toolkit. That's what i used and has the instructions with it. U can download the themes from playmarket or on the xdA website.

Woah! Is that a brick? Nope. You can still go to the recovery partition and reflash a different kernel. Or you can boot to the bootloader and use fastboot to flash a new kernel. If you were bricked you would never be able to use your device again.

I'm debating about unlocking my phone and instal a Rom right now or wait and see. I usually root all phones but I was one of those dumbasses that flashed my EVO 3D with the virgin mobile version. Lucky me I didn't have most of the side effects people were complaining about. I just had the VM banners and some times text messages errors, but CM 10.1 make it go away.
Anyone have any cons about unlocking my phone and flash a rom right now or wait until we get S-Off if (ever happens).

you just need to unlock and install either twrp or cwm recovery.
From what I've read this really isn't a big deal. Nexus devices are not S-Off either. All this prevents you from flashing are the radio and bootloader which are not usually modified.

True, although for asop, aokp. and other open source roms a different bootloader maybe required. For the evo 3d the ics bootloader that installed with the firmware from the ota would give bootloops if a asop or aokp rom was flashed.if as a user you would never flash anything other than custom roms for your current version of android then yes an unlocked bootloader is all you need. Another example was the htc flyer. That device shipped with gingerbread when htc released the ota for honeycomb every user was in a hurry to install it, many had flashers remorse and wished to go back to gingerbread. With s-on they were out of luck.
This phone has features we may never see in aosp. I'm holding off on that. Nothing wrong with sense5 though honestly, its way better than any previous versions so far

Incorrect. You need to flash a superuser app and its binaries as well.
this zip is supposed to turn off read/write protection Sprint_One_Root_Disable_System_RW_Protection (1).zip
I was thinking we are a rare bunch of folks that are control freaks that root our phones.
But it amazes me to see things like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, ROM Manager apps very near the highest volume Android Apps in the Market !!!
These are obviously "Root" user apps.
Maybe it's because we wipe our phones so often we distort the statistics
I love how they say they don't allow s-off because of "warranty" reasons yet at the bottom of the page it says unlocking your device will render the warranty void. #likewhat

This is somewhat false. The reason it was causing boot loops was because of the boot.img not flashing properly. It was required when the hboot got updated that we used a process such as "HTC dumblock" to flash the boot.img. Currently for our Ones we are fine because the hboot will allow proper flashing of the boot.img yet in the past, some future updates have blocked this feature. I for one will always want s-off. It gives me full control

It's not a big brother, I'm right now trying to get slim again.
I got used to look into older postings of a member when he asks a question. Sometimes you'll get the necessary details from his older posts.
Example: why searching for a mistake in a Rom when someone whines about freezes when a post before he wrote that he OC'ed his Kernel to 1600?
But in this case I acted like a BB after seeing the repeated orgy: it was even fun to answer him with his own history.
By the way: he got the Dr. Ketan link already in 2012...
Clearly I'm asking these questions again because I didn't have any success rooting the 1st time round.
As for orgies?!? Maybe opening the door and breathing some air would help remind you there's a big world outside with lots going on.

Since April 2012 members gave you the links to the tutorials all members used here. Most of them were beginners.
And if you didn't understand it after one year of trying you should consider not trying to root your device at all.
You might end in a bricked one.
For the record, I haven't been trying for a year, I tried twice.......(once managed to root but had problems afterwards, once, stopped trying as it became frustrating)
Maybe you should stop acting out your insecurities about yourself in a faceless blog and find peace with who you are

Look, in order to beeing able to help you it would be nice to tell us what rom you have got on your Note.
Starting with ICS (4.0.4) rooting is very simple. Just take a look in the settings what rom you have got and then head over to the PhilZ kernel thread in Original development. There you will find rooted kernels for all stock (Original) ICS or above roms. Dowmload the one matching your rom (choose the .zip version, not .tar). Then boot into stock recovery (press volume up, home and power buttons simultaneously) and flash the kernel. Bang, you got root. Not really difficult. What the hell have you been doing? I guess until today you have not really bothered reading the tutorials and threads. Because everything is explained there and all of us had start too by reading a lot. Good luck.

You can get your hands on some of the custom ROMs, and flash them. But be sure to carefully read the thread of the ROM like what recovery is safe to flash it,etc. Also remember to wipe data, factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache before you flash a ROM. Enjoy!

Glad you finally made it. See, rooting your phone using PhilZ kernel is really simple. If only you had bothered earlier to read through the PhilZ kernel thread
