Thinking about getting my wife an X for Sprint but I need to be able to get some sort of wifi tether to work for her like she has on her SII. (no tethering plan)
Been doing some reading and I cannot see a thread (so far) on how to root the Sprint Moto X that is on 4.4, will I be able to root and then install a wifi tether?
Thanks

I have been considering upgrading from the S3 to the Moto X recently, and with Amazon having it for a penny with contract I might go for it. I have a 2013 Nexus 7 so I currently use my S3 mostly for tethering. I have unlimited data without a tethering plan and going to use one of the other phones available upgrades on my family plan to upgrade and keep unlimited data
Would the Moto X be a good choice for tethering? If the phone has or gets upgraded to Kit Kat will I still be able to use an app like FoxFi until a kit kat root method gets released?
Also, why is it motorola phones are so much harder to root or unlock compared to other companies like Samsung and HTC? What does Motorola do differently thag makes them a pain to do these things?

Really?? After the Kit Kat update Foxfi stopped working for me. Likely going to return the Moto X and go back to the S4.

Yes really. Just turn it on and it works for me, not sure why. I do get a constant annunciation in the quick settings panel that says "network may be monitored" and I can't get rid of it.

By reading a myriad of different threads, it would appear that on the Sprint Moto X, you aren't able to create a mobile hotspot and tether for free over Wifi UNLESS you root the device, and then you need to do a work around.
Does it matter which version of Android you are using on a Sprint stock Moto X? Is the only way to share your data connection with a tablet over Wifi to root your Moto X? I couldn't tell if there was an easier way.
What about the Sprint version of the Nexus 5? Is that any different? I'm seriously considering getting the X and appreciate the help.

you have 2 options for tether
No Root and pay your carrier the extra money for tether
Root and use the native tether mod
I know nothing it definite when it comes to the MotoX+1 as we know little to nothing about it, but it's likely safe to assume it will be as secure if not more than the MotoX.
I NEED to have Wifi Tether on my phone, it is an absolute must. I currently have an unlimited data plan with Verizon and I use tethering on my Galaxy S3 nearly all the time. Is wifi tethering possible on the Verizon Moto X? Is root required?

Buy the developer edition. It is the only guaranteed way that you will be able to root, and [probably] use WiFi tether...
Yes I'm considering that option, wonder what Dev edition x+1 will cost
Is there a way to tether an unrooted vzw moto x? I searched and just ended up getting more confused and I've heard yes and no. So I figured I'd just ask. Sorry if it's been asked time and time again.
Thanks!
If you are on 4.4.2, yes. You can use towelpieroot and a script to enable native tethering. Both can be found in the forum. If you are on 4.4.4 and have unlimited data, not without shelling out more money to Big Red. If you have limited data, you should be able to tether with no problems

I asked big red, they said I cant even add tethering without losing unlimited data. I'm unrooted on 4.4.4
I've heard that there are methods with USB or bluetooth unrooted on 4.4.4 though, but I'm unsure. Was hoping there would be, apparently not though.

Yes you can. Just log onto verizon online and add it by clicking on manage products and apps. The Verizon reps are clueless half of the time.
You can even turn it on and off as much as you like during the month. It is $1/day for each day it is on, and if it is on for any part of the day you get charged the full $1.

PDAnet works with USB tether and bluetooth tether, just not WiFi tether.
You can get a new Verizon Moto X Dev Ed for cheap on ebay if you want to root and WiFi tether for free.

Thanks, I got PDAnet working! I'm gonna stick with this phone for now. I run 2 businesses off this phone now, so rooting it and possibly being without it for awhile isn't worth the risk for me.
Stupid real life always getting in the way.
I got my OG Moto X upgraded to a new Moto X. I'm on vzw unlimited and currently tether using PDANet bluetooth or USB. Unrooted.
How does tethering work on the Moto X (2014)?

WiFi tethering on an unrooted Verizon MX14 works the same as it does on any other unrooted Verizon phone - it depends on your plan. If you have a plan where WiFi tether is included for free, then you can tether for free. If your plan does not include free WiFi tether, then when you try to open the MHS, you will be offered the option to pay $30/mo for WiFi tether - the so called entitlement check.
If you root, you can bypass the entitlement check and tether for free.
If you don't want to root, you can turn the $30/mo WiFi tether feature off and on as much as you want in a month either online through your Verizon account or through the MyVerizon app on your phone and you will only be charged for the days you turn it on. If it is on for any part of a day, you will be charged for a full day of use. It is about $1/day to use it plus taxes and surcharges that vary based on your state.
As you already know, PDANet only allows for USB and BT tether on a MX14. If you are interested in free WiFi tethering on your MX14, check out the MoFo thread in this forum.
Wifi doesn't matter to me. Bluetooth or USB are just peachy, just wasnt sure if they worked on the new Moto X like they do the old one. You never know with vzw.

PDANet on 5.0 Lollipop worked on my Verizon MX14 the same as it did on my MX13 - USB and BT only. We are about to get an update to 5.1 and so only time will tell if that will be the case for 5.1.
A minor correction: VZW no longer allows you to add a tethering plan for $30 a month on a grandfathered unlimited plan. At least, that is what I was told when I tried to add it.
