Tether app or Root? - Moto X Q&A

I currently have the S4 and was fortunate to order a moto x today with their discount. It should come in a few weeks. In the meantime, I currently tether with my rooted S4. What options do you recommend to tether with kit Kat? Paid app recommendation? Root?
Thanks in advance!

What carrier are you on? Which Moto X did you order?
If you have the particular combination of ordering the XT1053 (T-Mobile or unlocked model) and use AT&T for a carrier you don't need to root to tether. It works natively. The phone doesn't do the AT&T entitlement check.

If you are in a different combination of carrier or model you will probably need to root to be able to tether. Do this and you can use the native tethering solution:

[Q] Does anyone have a developer edition (NOT BELL CANADA!!!)

Does anyone on this forum have a developer edition?
Just wondering...
I was going to buy one if root can't be obtained without one. It just can't happen anytime soon. I'm not rich.

If you do happen to have that kind of money don't waste it on an atrix HD. Get one of the new phones coming out this year with twice the specs.

Not applicable to Moto X since it is not sold by tmobile stores or tmobile online. Basically it's an unlocked moto x sold directly by Motorola with tmobile bands which is a good thing since we don't get any tmobile crap or logos.

Vzw de root/tether question

So if my moto x comes, it will be minutes before I leave on vacation. In order to use tethering will I need root? And to get root, do I need to have a computer? Need to decide if I'll have to bring a laptop vs just a chromebook.
You don't need root to tether on jellybean but on kitkat you do and yes you need a computer to root.
Side note: Long term you should just pay to tether. I bit the bullet and did. The security issues and messy root methods for kit Kat are just not worth it when you consider how bad it would be for someone to have access to your gmail account. To each their own though.

Bypass Verizon hotspot?

I am on a Verizon Moto x rooted(non dev edition) and a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Apparently it does not include hotspot. Is there any way to bypass the Verizon verification on the hotspot in the settings menu? I have done this on older phones, so how can I do this with the Moto x?

Just to clarify, I don't want to use foxfi or something like that, I want the default settings app.

Yes. If you are on a MAC you can use my toolkit. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591875
or just follow this forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536166
Thanks so much, I'm not on a Mac, but I was fine doing it the manual way.

Who updates the Verizon developer edition

I Googled this and can't find the answer. Is it moto directly or is it updated at the same time a regular verizon moto x is updated?

Verizon will approve it while Motorola will make the update. Don't confuse a Developer Edition with a GPE (Google Phone Experience) or a Nexus device.
A Verizon DE will see the update the same time the Verizon retail model does.

Based on the speed of the 4.4 update, I'm not too concerned. I'm sure it's right around the corner.
