[Q] Google maps not reading street names - Moto X Q&A

Hey there, first post, long time reader.
I'm using a GSM dev edition, not rooted, google maps latest version. I'm not getting street names read out during navigation, it just says turn left, right etc...I am using the moto x out of the USA though, but I'd thought the reading of street names should be enabled by the phone. My phone language is English, the maps are in US english but for the life of me, can't figure it out.
Anyone else has this issue?

No it doesn't work, and there is no GPS option either. That option is not yet available to work on the device yet.
Awesome. Thanks....
Nice. Google navigator 4 allows you to use street view with gps also..
Yes, it does. This is FREE though and Navigator 4 costs $$$$$.
How is this better than the standard google maps application?
because you can view 360 degree street images. which is all explained in the first post.
I'll tell you right now. This app has already saved my butt. The 360 view totally helped me find what I was looking for. Oddly enough, it was a strangely inconspicuous bowling alley.
Works good on Treo 750.
haha this app is so cool..
ive just been sitting here traveling the country..
thanks for this.. good find.. works perfectly
Google Maps 2.2.0.20 RELEASED
doesnt have street view but the "transit" tab finally works with subway train routing, least in NYC! Goodbye HopStop.com
Neat, but not as user friendly to me. Lack of My Location and GPS definitely hurts. I'll wait for a a windows mobile version.
Does this not work with WiFi? i never use my phone network for internet. 95% of places i go have a wifi connection i can get.
its saying... "this application requires a data connection. please contact your carrier, or visit www.google.com/gmm/configure.html on your computer for more info"
any ideas?
If you want GPS, get the TOM TOM 7
me a newb
Hellow im a newb how do you install this?

Nav behaviour since CM7

Guys quick question, runnning stock 2.1, or a custom 2.2, My navigation would use the default voice I set in settings, it also said street names.
Since using CM7 I notice Nav is using its own voice selection and not reading street names.
My GMAPS is upto date.
What is going on?
In order to get the street names read to you, I always had to install a text to speech library from the market. It has always prompted me to do so the first time I started Navigation. It doesnt show up in my apps list, so I am not sure of the exact name.
There's a CM7 sticky for this kind of thing.

[Q] Search settings wrong (outside US)

I did try searching so apologises if this has been answered before.
I recently bought this phone, and it works great (I'm in the UK). BUT, and this happened on other phones with android, is using the search app, and for example typing in amazon, it'll take me to search listings with amazon.com. Where as if I search from my pc it'll give amazon.co.uk as first result. This is even worse for product searches, where it'll return the prices in dollars, I have enabled the "use my location" option in the search settings but still to no avail, it seems in the browser there's a string that has US, where I want it to be GB, or at least use the GPS and realise I want UK prices. I tried editing build.prop but nothing. Any ideas?
example when I search using hotkey from the desktop: www dot google dot com /m?hl=en&gl=us&client=ms-android-verizon&source=android-launcher-widget&q=amazon
Maybe if the hl=en&gl=GB it'd work as I want?
Did you install morelocale 2?
Thanks this worked straight away! I never thought I'd need to install a specific app just to have my location changed.. I'm assuming this changes some config file somewhere in the phone then. Is it a bug with Android because my friend also said he has the same problem.

Well, the droid 3 only has english and spanish settings. This means that it will also USA phonenumbers e.g. 581-102-1233, so morelocale is needed to fix it. (for the netherlands, at least). It will make apps/browsers etc think you're in xxx country
Ah, does the morelocal2 download extra settings then? Because yes my phone numbers are displayed correctly now as well. Strange because the phone was never meant to be used outside the US

I don't know exactly. What do you mean it wasn't mean to be outside the US? It's a global phone - just by verizon
I meant it wasn't sold in the UK or anywhere else in EU, I had to import mine. But yes I know it's a global phone, just not globally sold

I know but morelocale 2 is not droid 3 specific - it's for android, so it doens't matter that the droid 3 is not sold anywhere in the EU
Ok just discovered an inconvenience with the dialer. Got uk settings but it wants +44 on my phone numbers.. otherwise it just adds + to the last 7digits resulting in failed call. Any suggestions as I don't fancy changing my entire address book

[Q] Google Now cannot be activated since KitKat upgrade

I've always been able to use Google Now on my Xperia Z1 on JB. I've updated it to the latest KitKat version and I can no longer activate Google Now. It says I need to activate Google Location Reporting and when I go to activate it, it says "Google Location Reporting is not available in my country."
Now I know Google love to block availability of products on a geographical basis, I.E USA only....
I just find it odd that it worked on JB and now they've locked it down in KitKat.

Change your language in google search. Go to voice then english then US. Should work.
It's already set to US. Unfortunately doesn't seem to work.

Ah well then it's not going to work, i know the Z2 it doesn't work on either, as i've tried it.
Only launcher i've found it to work on from the homescreen is the Nexus 5 launcher, i've been using that launcher for some time now and have only come back to the Xperia one since the Z2 launcher was released, i've not upgraded to 4.4 yet, i'm going to allow the kinks to be ironed out.
If you click search then it'll let you use the ok google feature but wheres the fun in that

[Q] Nokia 530 Cortana newbie

All
Just purchased a UK unlocked Nokia Lumia 530 to play with. Ive noted that Cortana does not seem to be installed even though I am running Cyan which I thought was the latest version of 8.1?
Ive made sure my regional settings and keyboard are set to UK as I had read that this could cause issues if set incorrectly.
Any pointers would be appreciated

Yep, all of the above settings are set. I did note that when setting up the phone and often after a restart it defaults the date to 1st July 2014 so I've had to manually set the date. The sim, phone and account are all new.
Im assuming that I should see an application called Cortana listed. The particular feature I'm after is the quiet hours feature of Cortana.

test it by setting everything to USA , and look if it then works
Set the phone to US. It restarted a couple of times and downloaded various language packs but no Cortana.
I cannot see Cortana in the app list or anywhere to enable it in settings.
Im well versed with IOS and Android including rooting and fiddling with Cyanogenmod so am not a total numpty when it comes to Mobile devices but due to being a Windows Phone newbie I could be getting something basic wrong...
Thanks for your help so far.
Woohoo.. Got Cortana working by fiddling with the regional settings. I've now got the phone set as A US phone and it's now working. The language for the keyboard can stay as a UK keyboard so the £ appears correctly when typing. Weather reports in Cortana show as Fahrenheit and not centigrade but I can live with that for now.
I guess this means that Cortana is not fully supported on my phone in the UK yet?

Ive only had my 530 for a week and have not made/received many calls as yet BUT I have noted that the top of the phone does seem to get hot when on a phone call.
Ive signed my device up to the developer program which allowed me to download an update to the phone and hey presto, Cortana works when phone is set to the UK. Problem solved...
I guess Cortana doesn't speak the King's English ?
