This is the most appropriate location I could find to post this, as I have three HTC devices (8525, TyTN 2, and Advantage) so I thought I would start here.
Issue:
I can no longer connect to my Slingbox on my home network when using my MediaNet (wap.cingular) connection on the TyTN 2 or the Advantage.
Error Message: Cannot connect using these settings. But email and web work from the MediaNet settings, so I am fairly certain the configuration is correct.
Facts:
- The connection works over Wifi on either HTC device, so I know my Slingplayer Mobile settings (Finder ID, etc.) are correct.
- The connection works using a Verzion Motorola Q. My corporate VPN connection also does not work with AT&T, but does on the Q through Verzion.
Conclusion:
AT&T has (or did) make changes to the proxy used which prevents services running on certain ports from working correctly.
Question:
Is anyone else having problems connecting to their Slingbox? If you can connect, what settings are you using?
Additionally, could someone please explain the differences between the wap.cingular and isp.cingular settings? Do you have to use isp.cingular to get VPN and other advanced services to work? If so, what is the minimum data plan you must subscribe to with AT&T to be able to do so?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
I cant say why you are having issues. My Slingbox connection works fine (actually much better than fine) via my Kaiser on AT&T with MediaNet. It works better than it ever did with my 8525. I do notice that I do have 2 separate Connections, one for MEdiaNet and the other called "My ISP" which both point to the same wap.cingular APN. Not sure why I have 2, but everything works fine. The MediaNet one is "hidden" and I can't change it. The My ISP one is visible, but I don't want to delete it since everything seems to work fine. It just switches between them (albeit unnecessarily) to make things work when needed.
Furthermore, I am using wap.cingular exclusively. If you do connect to a VPN, you must use isp.cingular. The normal MediaMax, MediaNet and smartphone plans give you wap.cingular. The PDA plans give you isp.cingular. Blackberry plans may give you neither (they go to blackberry.net).
Thanks
Can I ask what port # you are using for your Slingbox? I am using 5001 for one of mine. Did you have to make a rule entry in your router or firewall? I am just trying to determine why suddenly I cannot connect. I am going to pop my SIM card back into my 8525 when I get home and check it again. The last time I tried it on the 8525 it worked. The trouble is, there aren't a lot of changes to make. it's pretty much wap.cingular and the password.
Thanks, and if you think of anything else, please let me know.
Rob
my slingbox works just fine on att. WHen i had the isp.cingular it did not. i had to change it to wap.cingular to get it to work.
Hmmm, don't know th eport off hand, but I want to say i'm justusing the default.
Did you upgrade to the new Slingbox firmware the past couple of days?
I did and could not connect. I called Slingmedia and they told me they had some issus with the new firmware and UpnP settngs in some routers.
I had to go into the Slingbox settings on the desktop PC and manually open the port in the router. If you call them they will take you step by sep
I had the same problem it took me 10 hrs to finally find the answer. It has nothing to do with your port your finder ID at all. like the a previous stated you need to use a different connection setting to use slingbox. Use or create the my isp connection. the only difference is one use proxy settings and one does not. to be honest i just deleted the media net profile and used my isp exclusively. the only problem is medianet keeps showing up in my connection settings. the medianet setting can also screw with push email retrieval
Thanks so much NJXBEAN! I could NOT get Slingplayer to connect until I made that change in the modem settings. It works great now!

Proxy was blocking me...
After experimenting with mine further, I was FINALLY able to connect by unchecking the "use proxy server" setting on my unlocked Kaiser. I wonder if the AT&T "Tilt" build of the OS will even allow this?
AT&T Tilt and Slingbox
Right out of the box, Slingplayer worked on my Tilt. I made no changes to the proxy settings.
I have the media net unlimited plan.
It could be a firewall issue. If the connection you have is listed as "Connects to the Internet" it'll block some ports. If you have Connects to Work, it'll open all ports.
I just just want to say that you guys are great! I had a problem with sling, researched on it here, and found the problem without asking..People, u gotta love it!!!!!!

have you found a fix, i have the x7500 and my slingbox worked fine at first then after a couple of months it just stopped and i could not receive email either, i found a workaround for the email but i have not found a work around for the slingbox.
P.S. i recored myself talking to an at&t rep you should listen to what he says

Found a Fix
It cannot connect to isp.cingular, you need to ADD wap.cingular apn to your network settings.

If you just make your default connection Media Net it's already going to be set for wap.cingular
isp.cingular is the default only if you have it set to use ATT ISP as your connection.
Wow, I want slingbox now. I didn't even think of it working on my Tilt....is the data transfer extreme????????
I have a custom ROM based on the official 2.3.5 ROM (3.12.405.1) and the HTC WiFi Hotspot application doesn't work. The app starts and wireless devices can associate with it and lease IP addresses via DHCP but they can't access the Internet. I think its a NAT problem in the application because I can resolve names from my PC as the phone is proxying the DNS lookups - i.e. open a command prompt on my PC and type 'nslookup www.google.com' and I get valid answers. If I try to access the Internet with the browser it fails.
I have downloaded android-wifi-tether and this works as long as the 'Routing Fix' is checked in the settings. I was hoping not to have to have this alternate WiFi Tether application and use the integrated one.
Just tested USB Tethering and the results are the same - i.e. PC gets an IP address and can resolve names but can't access the Internet. I assume this is something fundamental in the NAT/Routing being done by the phone?
Andy
Really weird... Sounds like your mobile data connection is down. (I'm sure you already checked that)
Flash some other ROM with same base and try.

I can access the Internet on the phone when its running so I know there is connectivity. As I say I think its something fundamental with the NAT/routing on the phone - I am not sure how to debug it further?
Andy
I am not sure why but this fixed it for me:

I assume with Orange the WiFi Hotspot App uses this 'Consumer Broadband' connection and not the default 'Orange Internet' connection. I was tempted to delete the 'Consumer Broadband' APN and see what happens, a job for another day though as I need to use it at the moment.

Hello,
Anyone know if FoxFi or other techniques work to tether the phone with a laptop to get internet from the phone onto the laptop? I know I can pay Sprint to subscribe for the hotspot feature, but I feel it's unjust because I'm paying for data already (not unlimited plan) so I feel it would be unjust double-billing to make me pay for the data twice essentially.
USB cable methods would be fine, in addition to bluetooth or wifi. Anything?
I tried a few of them and couldn't get anything to work. Root can't get here fast enough.

Foxfi doesn't work. Confirmed yesterday.
I am attempting to gain my MSL so I can change some APN settings and setup hotspot using foxfi and trick the authentication through the APN like on the S6.
This phone has been a real pain the rear trying to get access to things.
how can you get your msl, call Sprint?

you do not have to call Sprint to get your MSL/SPC - method described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521276 worked for my LG G4 Sprint
Can you please provide instructions for enabling hotspot via foxfi without root? I can get to APN settings screen via ##3282# but there is no field "APN Type" on this phone
PDAnet+
If you haven't looked at it I would suggest PDAnet+. I can't directly link to it but the web address is pdanet.co. I personally use it with the USB Tether and it works flawlessly, for the most part. What I mean by that is if you don't have a koalality USB cable you WILL run into some issues. I was using my old G2 cable not realizing it was shot and would drop the connection and corrupt big downloads. The Free version has a few restrictions, but for light or general use I don't think that would be a major issue. I bought the app as I use my G4 as my internet on my PC . I game with it and download things with no issues. I downloaded all of GTA 5 (60gb) with no major issues either.
Could you elaborate on what is a koalality USB cable? I searched google for "koalality USB" and nothing came up.

LOL, he probably meant quality
USB cables are not born the same. Personaly I use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.ampere to test the USB cable. You will see a huge difference in Amps between good and bad USB cables using the same charger.
hah thanks, didn't catch that. OK will try out both the PDAnet+ app and the Ampere app and see how they work.
So Much for pdanet+ says it's not supported by our carrier.

USB and bluetooth both work fine with foxfi (paid) on the phone and pdanet on the laptop. I suspect but haven't tried that pdanet on the phone in conjunction with pdanet on the laptop will work as well.
Foxfi, Tether It, and WiFi Tether Router are all working.
Just confirmed that pdanet on the phone with pdanet on laptop worked.
PDANet on laptop and FoxFi work beautifully for USB. WiFi tether doesn't work for me.

WiFi Tether Router requires root, so it can't be working
it used to be possible to enable stock tethering by changing APN Type to default, mms, dun , but I no longer see "APN Type" in the APN menu
ok, not sure how it works, but certainly seems to. i dont get the hot spot error anymore

Did this today, worked for me.
I also used Klink, which is a paid USB tether with nice configuration features. I used PDAnet before Klink for USB tether, but could never get its Wifi tether to work when the native hotspot was still disabled.

Hey there. Just a couple of questions. Do you have Sprint, unlimited data, the latest OTA, and was it on LTE?
I tried today, September 22 for the first time and almost immediately got the pop up. I have Sprint unlimited with latest OTA but was on 3G with the pop up.
I followed these directions which I think is the same, http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-enable-wifi-tethering-on-sprint-lg-g4-without-root/ but wasn't sure what they meant when they said, "f it works good but if you get a popup saying “Due to network issues, tethering has been disabled”, you need to follow the same steps again but instead of selecting Internet in the APN settings select ‘cinet.spcs’."
Thanks.
Brad
Hello Everyone.
I am using a VPN and the Wifi Tether Router paid app from the market. I am curious as to how T-mobile still knows I am tethering, as I just got a "You used 80% of your High speed data" text from them (Have unlimited data plan)
Any ideas on how to completely hide? SSL? Proxy? Only seem to have issues with the Playstation and not the PC....
Any help appreciated...
The PS4 data probably shows up different on the network than PC data. I've read that T-Mobile put some new things in place on their end to identify data usage being masked.

I saw similar results. I noticed that when I tether, it doesn't route me through my openVPN connection regardless of the tethering method I use. You can test this on your own, fire up the vpn, then tether to your PC, then go check the external IP on your PC.
You'll most likely need a non-stock ROM for it to work. The ROM probably reports all MACs and the traffic passing through it to T-MO.
Try this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3071188
I've used WIFI Tether Router for several phones with great success.
I know all about the adding of ,dun to apns
But if you already have root Wifi Tether Router does not need any mods. It might also works on CDMA (roaming), where the ,dun trick does not.
It also might be less traceable by sprint.

I'm rooted and this app didn't work for me. Is there anything special I have to do? My mobile is set to Global. Does it need to be CDMA/LTE?

I think these are the only changes needed from default. I so happen to use no encryption (i.e. Open) and channel = 1 which I think is default.
Interface wlan0
method 2
firmware reload unchecked
I think everything else is default.
If you scroll to bottom of Configuration there is a Link to "devices configurations/website"
I had the Native tether working too and I removed the ",dun" mod from my APN's to test this.
Mine shows Build 165
Does SuperUser pop up to grant permission?
It might not work on roaming (CDMA), same limitation as the Native mod (i.e. adding ,dun).
Who-Hoo Wifi Tether Router works on roaming (i.e. works on non Sprint CDMA Networks). The adding of ,dun to APN's method only works on Sprint Networks (i.e. LTE and eHPRD). WIFI Tether Router works on everything. But you do need root.
Tested on rooted ZV6.
can someone please explain how to add ,dun to apn? ive looked online and see lines of provisional code being added. this was on a tmobile nexus 6 and i wasnt sure if thats the way for all phone. thanks in advance!
There is a video specific to the Sprint phone, where the guy walks through the steps one by one showing each step and result to add the dun info, though I don't recall if it was specifically the apn info that was modified?
Anyway, you need an app that can create shortcuts for hidden features of the phone, as explained on the guide. Install that app, that allows you to run the program built into the phone that lets you edit the thing to add the dun text and save it.
Sorry I don't recall the details, but it's another thread here about free wifi tether or hotspot.

Which hotspot method, Native (with ,dun added to APN's) or WIFI Tether Router?
I saw similar issue when trying to tether on Ev-Do it will connect for a moment and disconnect.
The APN method will not work on Ev-Do (usually that means roaming but not always).
Latest WIFI Tether Router will work on Ev-Do but requires root.

I am having an issue with wifi tether router where it will connect for a while and then the wifi signal will stop on its own. I have to kill and restart wifi tether router to regain a connection. I am wondering if this is a heating problem as the phone gets fairly hot when using wifi tether router. Is there a way to reduce the wifi radio power on the G4?
Uncheck "Allow Wifi Scanning" in advanced wifi settings. Should stop the signal from going away.

So just had something weird happen want to see if anyone else ran into this. I just reset for the month yesterday and My Metro app is showing 1.3 gigs used (all tethered with app). While playing Xbox I get a message saying I have used all of my hotspot data. I checked data usage on Xbox I haven't even used a gig yet. Also they didn't throttle my data. Anyone know what's going on?
