[Q] The Jelly Bean Upgrade Plan - LG Optimus 2x

Hey Guys,
Next Weekend (Friday December 20), I will finally make the jump to Jelly Bean from Gingerbread. I know that Kit Kat is also available, but it is much more buggy than Jelly Bean, and stability is my main goal, which is why I stayed on Gingerbread for so long. My plan for upgrading is this:
-Make a complete backup and snapshot of my device (Nandroid + Titanium Backup + Backup both Internal and External SD Cards to Computer) in case something goes wrong.
-Fully format both internal and external SD Cards (Including second Link2SD Partition in Ubuntu)
-Use AIO Toolkit to upgrade to New bootloader, and set up all new partitions, etc.
-Use AIO Toolkit to flash TWRP 2.6.0.0/ 2.6.3.0 For new bootloader (If it becomes available by the time I flash)
-Wipe Everything in Recovery
-Flash the latest TheROM 26 Stable (Most stable 4.3.1, with awesome extra features), + Kowalski Kernel M1 Stable, but I am keeping a close eye on the 3.1 developments (the 3.1 Hijuni port is too unstable for daily use currently, and Pengus mentions that Kowlaski features are being ported and code is being cleaned up for the Kowalski 3.1 release), so basically, I will make the kernel decision the day of the flashing operation.
-Flash Tonyp's full Non-Neon gapps from the development section
-Flash extra ROM Goodies, like feav's camera mod
-Reboot, let sit for a few minutes, and reboot again after first boot
-Begin setting up ROM/ Kernel and begin installing apps fresh from Google Play, and only restoring data from titanium backup for certain apps like games, etc.
Regarding the above, I have a few questions:
To begin, are the above steps proper? Is there anything that I should add or remove?
Secondly, when the 2.6.3.0 for New bootloader becomes available, it is as simple as flashing the new image through AIO Toolkit with no loss of data?
Lastly, does the Full non-neon gapps by Tonyp contain everything? Is there a better gapps to flash? I want the full Google apps experience, and the included mini-gapps does not contain everything I think.
I know this is a long post, but I really want to make sure I'm doing this right, and hopefully someone can use this thread in the future to do things proper also. Thanks in advance.

hi, I think the steps are correct. changing the bootloader will format the internal sd, but it doesn't matter if you format it before it. If tonyp makes a new twrp available you can flash it through the previous version of it, then you reboot recovery and it will be the updated version. not sure about the gapps question, but it surely contains play store, so you can install the latest version of the Google apps manually from it. good luck.

Hello,
Thank you very much. I will continue to research and if I have any questions which I cannot find the answer to, I will ask here. Thanks again.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using xda app-developers app

Yeah. Your steps are fine.
The new 3.1 kernel is awesome. I am using it with TheROM build 25. You might wanna try it.
TonyP's GApps have most of the important Google Apps. It's sufficient, I think.
And, AFAIK, a new recovery doesn't need a data wipe of any kind.
Have fun Flashing and Upgrading!
Sent from my LG-P990 using Tapatalk

Thanks for your answer! I think I will stick with the KK M1 build, and maybe when the 3.1 kernel becomes a bit more stable I will flash it. It's not too big of a deal, because a kernel upgrade is just wiping dalvik and regular caches, installing, and setting up kernel settings, which is a lot less work than a ROM upgrade. I think I will stick with Tonyp's non-neon full gapps, and I'll upgrade the recovery to TWRP 2.6.3.0 newbl whenever it becomes available . Thanks again!

Hello,
I have remebered a question I forgot to ask. Is Pdroid 2.0 supported in TheROM, and if it is, is it stable? Could I just use the auto patcher to add the functionality? Thanks again.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using xda app-developers app

Starting right now!
Hey Guys,
I'm starting the upgrade right now! I will post results after everything is done. I decided to use XPrivacy instead of the newer PDroids, because they contain bugs and are no longer developed. See you guys on the other side.

[Q] pros & cons

what are the pros or cons of upgrading to the latest nighly from cm 7.1.0-rc1?
Look here.
Honestly, I'd say all pros and no cons. I forget when deep sleep was fixed, but there's that, USB host mode, integrated Dal's OC kernel, nightly 150 brought with it a fast bootup, and those are just the main things I can think of off the top of my head.
Do they have a set of instructions for install in one place or do I need to read through the thread for that? I remember there being things about uboot and stuff but I haven't read in a while.
do you lose all you settings/apps if you just delete devlick cache? im on nightly 87 now...
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
I thought I would finish my upgrading of my Nook at cm 7.1.0-rc1. I was getting Sleep Of Death (SOD) and had read that some of the new nightlies had Dalingren's OC inbuilt so went the nightly option (now am on #150).
So if you have ROM Manager (Paid), then going to Nightlies is very easy and has all the new features. ROM Manager updates you on a new build and it is a quick download and install. Nightlies also do not reset your device. Dalvik and Cache do not lose your settings as well. So, if you have ROM Manager, I would go the nightlies (just make sure you backup everything).
I am not going to guarantee it will fix everything, hence keep upgrading but have some workarounds in place.
Pros:
- All the new features and fixes (you will see improved speed, smoothness, Dalingren's OC inbuilt). Am on #150.
- Easy to do (if on ROM Manager paid). Easy to do in general but ROM Manager simplifies in general.
Cons:
- Be prepared that you backup everything. Nightlies are beta and you could have to go back to previous rom or fresh install (everyone suggests a fresh install is optimum but have only done once).
- Difficult settling for one build. You end up upgrading quite frequently and a new one can potentially break things (only happened to me once where I had to go back to a previous build). You also end up checking the comments of the next build, thinking that the next one will be the perfect build.

Newbie Checklist

Ello!
I'm getting my 2x in a couple days and I'm kinda new to all this custom ROM bamboozle. BUT I have been reading up on it all and I think I now have a vague idea of how to go about doing things. Would I be correct in saying:
1) Root
2) Install ROM manager/Clockwork thingy
3) Wipe phone/clear data etc
4) Flash temasek's KANG ROM
5) Flash Google applications or something (?)
6) Flash Vadonkas KANG kernel (I've heard it goes well with that ROM)
But I am fairly lost on:
. RIL and baseband. Do I need not bother with this if I have the ROM and stuff up to date? I'm not 100% sure what they are/do
. Whats the difference between these kang kernels:
-base version
-32M ramhack shared version
-32M ramhack version
Sorry for being a newbie and all, but a HUGE thanks to anyone that can lead me in the right direction
Thanks!
Baseband is what connects to your network. This is subjective on what one is best, but some roms, especially gb based roms, will specify which one you must use.
Ril is the bit that connects the bb stuff to all other things such as android and hardware etc. This is really easy to change using lggetril app from the market. Just check the one that is the same as your bb is called.
This may be a but simplistic by me but if unsure on bb to use ask in the thread of the ROM you're going to use
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
It seems that you are well prepared, but you should for safety, make a nandroid backup from recovery before you wipe your phone. It could come in handy...
Also, since you're not experienced I think you should wait with install of another kernel than the one that comes with Temasek's kang. This is the most stable one, and is least expected to bring your phone into an unwakeable sleep aka bsod.
For baseband; use the one that comes with the phone and check it out. If it works well, keep it, if not, then you can dig into the issue. Remember to use the getril app to match your ril with the baseband, CM7 comes with 218 ril, but your phone has probably a more recent baseband.
Welcome and good luck!

You should also have nvflash recovery handy.

A question from temasek and other developers

I am new to this forum,so first let me introduce myself.I am a doctor in india.
I bought this phone last year and like most users i was really disappointed with it. Intially it was froyo and then with extreme difficulty I updated to lg stock Gingerbread using its update too.I think the tool itself was buggy like most lg stock ROMs.
Anyway updating to gingerbread was a bad experiance .Too much lag in doing even basic phone use ,forget a smart phone experiance.Anyway not explaining in detail all the problems ,we all know it.
Was waiting for Official ICS release,so never thought of Unofficial ROMS since wud have made it difficult to update to stock ICS by company.
But last weak finally decided to try CM based ROMS and after some research decided to try Temasek CM7 based unofficial ROM build 132,
I must say what an experiance I had. From awesome to wow ,i am short of words to describe it .
So here i must thank everyone involved with XDA and especially cynogenmod and Temasek in perticular.
Thank you Temasek
Thank you XDA
Thank you cynogenmod
You all have made this ****ty phone into a delight to use .
I have installed " n " no of applications and still there is no lag and there is no shortage of RAM(and LAG due to IT) even after i week of using it ,which i used to have with stock gingerbread.
I must say i had been a noob and XDA and all you developers have made me into a mobile phone expert rooter ,flasher, etc.
I had few issues which i wud like to discuss, thanks in advance to anyone who helps me solve these.
I had flashed temasek CM7 build 132.and I had thought it wud also flash latest temasek kernel but it seems it didn't.
It now has kernal version [email protected] # 1
Mod version CM7-20120809
I basically want
1.A kernel with voodoo sound support
2.Ramhack
3.Good battery performance with 3G on.
4.Camera mod if possible.
Temesek could you give a small tutorial on variour kernels made by you,I looked various log changes made by you on p990 kernels but i am very confused.
Also what is difference b/w OC and uv etc
I have spent two days installing various applications on your ROM, so obviously will not like to do factory reset, data reset ,cache reset etc
before flashing any new kernel made by you.Kindly provide some suggestions on what i shud do.
Symbiosis kernel looks promising too but again don't want to wipe anything basically reinstalling all applications all over again.Any suggestions.
And yes I am sure you people in XDA wud soon release a fully functional ICS and even a jellybean based ROMS.So Now with my experiance i can say dont eeven want a LG stock ICS or jellybean even if they release it,untill then I wud stick to this wonderfull ROM by temasek
Thanks everyone and all the best to developers in their efforts on developing a fully functional ICS /jellybean based ROM.Hope to see it soon.
Hi if you already have temasek ROM installed on your phone you can flash latest symbi0sis kernel 1.1.2 without loosing any data! just flash the kernel via cwm and boot the phone - done
also symbi0sis is based on temasek kernel, works perfectly with temaseks ROM
after kernel install u can open the app GuesteOC and enable the ramhack with your preferred size in MB

Thanks for quick reply stefan.
So does that mean i dont need to do data/factory reset or cache reset before flashing symbiosis kernel or any other kernal .I have tons of app's installed ,don't you there can be bugs if i dont do a factory/cache reset before flashing symbiosis kernel. Its written in most threads that kernel flashing is similar to ROM flashing ,so data/ cache rest is advisable.
Where can i find GuesteOC app or can i use terminal emulator method as described in some threads

Np just flash the kernel without any wipes. it will wipe dalvik cache automatically. i guarantee you it won`t break your apps.
GuesteOC is included and will be installed automatically. no need for command line, everything as simple as possible with symbi0sis kernel!
if you try other kernels you might need to wipe dalvik cache first if they dont do automatically!
also u can do a backup in cwm first so if something goes wrong you restore the backup with all your apps.
Thanks stefan i will apply your Kernel today itself.Hope it solves everything ,Voodoo sound support ( i have the app with me) ramhack and good battery life too. Will post back if i face any issue.and offcourse my compliments
Also another question to you .You have said CWM backup/Restore .I did the same 3 days back before installing temasek ROM.But had forgotten to keep backup of some important SMS messages so tried to restore original stock LG ROM through CWM back up/and restore.
I Had a real shock it said that i had restored everything but my LG started rebooting again and again just stops at LG logo everytime.Even recoery was not accessible. So i had a torrid time going through variuos XDA thread .NVflashed stock froyo ROM and then flashed temasek ROM.
The only thing i missed was that i pressed backup/and restore straight from CWM app instead of going through manual recovery doing data/cache wipe and then restoring from Backup image.
Can you through some light on the serious issue that i had

Maybe it had to do with different file system (ext3 stock / ext4 temasek) -- afaik you need to flash back2ext3 or something when you want to go back to original stock ROM. However I have never done that (going back to orig stock). Next time best use "SMS Backup & Restore" (available in market) for backing up and restoring SMS after ROM change!
Good luck with the new kernel I'm sure everything will be fine.

Do restores this way
1>wipe data/factory reset
2>wipe cache partition
3>flash back2ext3
4>restore

I have good battery life with TMT 5.0 Final Rom.
What do you mean by good battery life i have 12 hrs with light usage (few hrs of MP3) some games and web) on stock 4.0.4
almost the same on XXLSA
make efs backup, before anything except root. This to secure pcode, imei and bunch of other stuff. Only needs to be done once
Save both off and on phone
Then go and try various roms for flavour

I think this ROM do the job for u. I'am using it and its great. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007589
If you are a newbie and want something rock-solid, stable, I wouldn't recommend a JB leak or a heavy customized ROM. However, if you want to experiment, you could try Ultimate XXLSA JB ROM. For me it's being very stable so far, but you will need to apply some patches in CWM recovery after flashing it. For a stable ICS ROM I would recommend RocketROM ICS, it worked great for me.
In any case, I suggest you follow my guide for a thorough clean-up before flashing. This way you ensure nothing old is left and minimize possible issues:
1) Wipe data
2) Wipe cache
3) Wipe dalvik cache
4) Format /system & /preload
5) Format internal sdcard (make sure you save anything you need before)
6) Flash ROM
7) Wipe cache again
8) Wipe dalvik cache again
9) Reboot
Step 5 is to ensure old app data is not left back. Make sure you save anything you want. Steps 7 and 8 I don't know if are needed, but I prefer to be a bit paranoid (not sure if after flashing a ROM it could come with stuff in cache & dalvik). And I avoid restoring apps from Titanium Backup, but it should work except for system apps & data.
I am on JB XXLSA 3.0 (TW) Rom from SVA.
It is very stable and has a good Battery Life. :good:
Btw. Rocket Rom will no longer be distributed, so better look for something other.

[Q] ROM Options...

Hey guys and gals,
Noob here, only installed 1 or 2 ROM's in the past, but I would now like a hand deciding on a suitable ROM for my needs on my Galaxy Tab P1000 (UK/European)
I would like a ROM that is nice and responsive, has good battery life and is fairly customisable, and I guess most come already rooted? I would prefer it to be ICS or JB too I have looked about and seen a few CM10 ones, some MIUI ones and various others but I am lost for choice, I have no idea what ones are best.
I want everything to work (all wireless connections, camera etc...) don't mind things like auto brightness or similar as that isn't major. The main reason for wanting to change from the stock gingerbread is because I find it unresponsive and boring.
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, thought Q&A was my best bet.
Thanks,
Cam.
Actually your best bet is to try them out yourself. All criteria are subjective.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app
Ok matey, will have a play!
Thanks,
Cam.
Hey again,
Quick question,
For the MIUI v4 ICS ROM, which I like the look of alot, it needs a "restock" and install Overcome or a CM9 guide to be followed. (ROM link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613842 )
However, do I still need to do this as I haven't already installed any custom ROM? If I do can you give me a feint idea how I can approach it? Or can I just wipe cache/data etc.. and install the ROM?
Sorry if I am being a pain, not had to do any of this before.
Thanks,
Cam.
Many has your problem.
The thing is, newer ( well, post April 2012) ROM use new MTD layout, which need you to come from stock, or from same layout.
If your custom ROM were GB, no issue. They are stock BML partition, which the new rom can convert upon install.
If it were cm9 or 10, watch the mtd layout. The installer isn't made to convert older mtd to new mtd, so need restock.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app
Ok so as I have no custom ROM at all I need to restock to new layout. No problem, just wanted to know if it was necessary for me to do it.
Thanks for your help,

Think I have got it, can someone please confirm my steps to make sure I am doing it right?
1. Flash latest CWM recovery using Odin
2. Make Nandroid backup using CWM
3. Flash GB-stock-safe, then flash Overcome kernel 4.0.0.tar using Odin for both (do I do these separately or is there a way to flash them together?)
4. Place MIUI v4 ROM and GApps etc.. on Tab's SD card.
5. Boot into recovery, wipe cache, wipe data and flash ROM.
6. Flash GApps and patch's etc...
7. Reboot into ROM
If it doesn't reboot into MIUI I need to reflash the ROM as the first flash converted my Tab to MTD? Is that correct?
Hopefully I have got it,
Thanks in advance,
Cam
Actually, am I right in saying CWM isn't fully supported on P1000? What recovery should I use?
Sorry for all the questions again,
Cam.
Cwm is contained in kernel.
If you are willing to forgo backup, must start with GB stock safe v5
Then overcome kernel.
By then you have a cwm recovery.
