[Q] Do new MotoMaker phones ship with KitKat? - Moto X Q&A

About to order a second X, just curious as to what OS comes preinstalled nowadays? It'll be an AT&T one.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Mine came with 4.2.2. Ordered last week.

I would hope not. A brand new Moto X always comes 4.2.2 equipped. If it comes with 4.4 it probably won't be in a box lol

Yeah, received mine last week and it had 4.2.2 on it.

4.2.2

At least that makes rooting 4.4 one less step!

Two Tmo X's ordered in the cyber monday sale both came with 4.2.2 still too. Instantly offered 4.4 OTA on first boot.

My wife's just got here. It said 4.2.2 and the base number was.51 it was ready for an update to go to .54
I'll do that then root for 4.4!

Got mine Friday with 4.2.

Thanks guys, good to know. I'm not a fan of 4.4 so I'm glad they're still shipping with 4.2.

My moto x that was delivered 12/17 came with 4.4 installed.

i got mine on wed (18th) and it came with 4.4.

Mine arrived on 12/14 with 4.2.2, but immediately updated to 4.4.

Are New 3G or WiFi Nexus 7s shipping with JOP40E?

OK so hear me out. It seems Nexus devices sold from February onward are shipping with JOP40(X) builds that were never released OTA to older devices.
For example:
New Nexus 4s (as of early February) are shipping with JOP40G.
New Nexus 10s (as of early February) are shipping with JOP40F.
Now, when JOP40G was released to AOSP, in the commit logs, someone made a mention about merges from JOP40E and JOP40F. We know JOP40F is for the Nexus 10, so what was JOP40E for? I'm curious if JOP40E is a build shipping on new Nexus 7 devices.
Has anyone bought a new 3G or WiFi-only Nexus 7 in the last 2 weeks? Did it ship with JOP40E?
If anyone does get one with that build, please get me the bootloader version, baseband version, and URL to the OTA file for the JOP40E -> JDQ39 update file. If you need help with this, I can help you. Having this information will allow me to host the file in the permanent archive repository on randomphantasmagoria.com and link to it in the N7 OTA URL sticky thread. This information will need to be acquired right after taking the tablet out of the box, before applying the 4.2.2 update that'll pop up when you turn it on for the first time.
Thanks!
Haven't you thought that JOP40F - previous N10 build?

JOP40F is what ships presently. If you bought an N10 today, that is what would be on it when you turned it on for the first time. Likewise JOP40G for the Nexus 4. I'm not sure what you're getting at.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
My point is, if JOP40F = N10 and JOP40G = N4, does JOP40E = N7? If you bought an N7 right now, today, what build would be on it when you turned it on for the first time. The only way to know is to ask someone who had bought one in the last couple of weeks, which is the point of this thread. I have a suspicion that it would be JOP40E.

Well that answers the question as far as the Wi-Fi version is concerned. Thank you!
Now, what about the 3G version? Has anyone bought one of those in the last week or two? If so, did you note what build was installed out of the box?

I'm 75% sure that 3G versiipons are being shipped with JDQ39 now as well, since even Wi-Fi versions do

You're probably right...I'd just like to get verification of that from someone who got one.
I have a 3G nexus 7,bought it in December though. Current build number - JDQ39
Thanks.
Is there anyone who purchased a 3G model in the last 3 weeks that can tell me what build came shipped on it, before any OTAs were applied?

My Nexus 7 HSPA (received last week) came with some JVSxx ROM, which was "Android 4.2". Tried to Google the build number, but didn't find any hits. Anyway, it didn't last long since an OTA update was pushed to it almost immediately and I quickly rooted/flashed it to an AOKP build.

Hope we get this soon... Two New Features for Android 4.3 Leaked by HTC

Interesting read...
Wish we could just the .12 update. Seen all the before and after pics and they look great. It will be nice to get 4.3 though.
Hope the Developers are all over this.

We are on Sprint, so we'll be getting 4.3 about a week before 5.0 comes out.... With any luck.

Agreed. Two years ago I bought the Nexus S 4G from Sprint thinking I wouldn't have to rely on Sprint for OTA updates but I was wrong. OTA updates consistently came months after their GSM counterparts so I ended up rooting the device and installing CM and then Slim which in retrospect was the best decision I ever made while owning that phone. Hopefully as time goes by we will get more choice and variety in terms of custom roms for the ONE although with the Galaxy 4 shipping with 4.2.2 I have to imagine HTC will be sending out an update soon so it can better go head-to-head with its biggest competitor.
i dont think thats fair. When i had my S2 we always got the updates before any of the other carriers in the us.
I just got off the s2, updates sucked. Thankfully the guys here got rooted leaks for us. I think jellybean it's dropped a month ago. I'm really waiting on AOSP for this
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2
Well to be fair. Sprint has been ahead of the game lately with some of their updates being before other US carriers.. Example: The damn Evo LTE got jelly bean months before the flagship One X on At&t.

OTAs on nexus devices shouldn't matter if you're on xda. The 4g got Roms just as fast as the gsm.

Not to mention, HTC already has Android 4.3 from Google, and they've been testing it. With as big of a Saving Grace this phone needs to be for HTC, I would assume they would get this out as quickly as possible. We'll see 4.2.2 soon, but I think we'll see 4.3 sooner than later.

No, certain members just happen to know someone who tests lets say Samsung's test builds for a certain device, so they have it sent to them by their source and then leak it. There's no leakedromsforsprintphoneblog.com or anything.

Hey its better than being on AT&T and getting it 4 months after 5.0 comes out.

Updates?

So I just got this phone yesterday and I love it so far... My only question or concern is will it still get the updates as quick as the nexus... I noticed it was still on 4.2.2 and my Nexus tablet is on 4.3... That was my main selling point to buy the phone...

Not as quick as a Nexus. No phones or tablets get updates as quick as the Nexus line.
If that was the main selling point for you, I suggest you return it and wait for the Nexus 5.

Many people believe, since Google owns Motorola, that Motorola phone will get updates faster... Google has already stated that this is not true, they get no preferential treatment in regards to updates.
That being said, due to the limited bastardization of android on the moto x, it is fair to believe that this device has the potential to get updates quicker, whether that will play out as such, will be better known in the future.
But, the quick answer to your question is"no" this will not get updates as fast as a nexus device... Its not a nexus device. But it is understandable to believe that we will get updates more quickly than most other manufacturers devices on the market.

I will be happy if we hey an update in a reasonable amount of time... I guess that's a matter of opinion on what's a reasonable amount of time... I just traded in my HTC One XL for this phone so as long as I would get the updates faster than I did on that phone I will be happy... Also I was hoping to get support for this device for a longer period of time and keep receiving the updates... I just figured since it does not have a heavy ui like sense or touch wiz I would get updates quicker and supported longer... But I'm happy with the phone so I think I'm just going to keep it...

This is the first phone I've had that I don't want to root... I actually want the ability to get the ota updates, seems like Motorola is actively listening to consumers and pushing updates... I don't want to miss out on what they have coming. Plus, this phone is simply amazing, just the way it is.

Dumb noon questions

I ordered my Moto X on Saturday through moto maker. Its a Verizon retail version. Any idea if 4.4 will come on it? If I don't have 4.4 is there anything I should do before accepting the update? My understanding is the the bootloader on the VZW Moto X retail version has not been unlocked by anyone yet. I am interested in obtaining an unlocked boot loader and root if possible if only for options down the road. I have been seeing tools like RockMyMoto or something on here...what are those all about. These options seem a lot different from what I am used to on my nexus, could really use a brief introduction to my new device. If I am missing a key topic, a link would be super cool.
Thanks!

Verizon released it earlier this week, and tmobile released it today.

New to andriod. Currently on mi9 rooted

I'm new and would like to know what is the difference between MI9,MJ5?, and KitKat. Performance wise, boltware, ect. I know the stock MI9 comes with whole bunch of craps preloaded. Does the mj5 n KitKat also has same apps preloaded? Thanks for your inputs. David
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
Ml9 is almost the same as MJ5. Kit Kat has different looking UI and performance improvements.
As far as BLOATWARE. Most of that is from your carrier (At&t, T-Moble crap) All carrier phones mostly come with that crap.
mj5 ("J") means jellybean right? Or its just a improved version of mi9?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
No, the J is the Month the Rom was released. So in the case of J, the 10th letter of the alphabet, coincides with the 10th month or October.
