[Q] [ARHD 5.1] System Update Ready to Install - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a message on my ARHD 5.1 ROM saying that a System Update has been downloaded and ready to install. I looked at the system update and it's for the 4.4.2 update. I'm pretty sure I shouldn't install it considering I'm not using a fully converted GPe and I'm unlocked, rooted, S-OFF, with a modified HBOOT. So, how can I get rid of the notification? It won't let me swipe it away and I really don't want to have such a potential issue just an accidental click away.

what happens if I download OTA update after rooting?

Hi,
I just rooted my HTC One for sprint.
If HTC comes out with over the air updates in the future, will this over-ride my root access?
Or will my phone remain rooted and still be able to update ?
Yes, you will. You could always try something like Ota Rootkeeper but i've never done anything like that lol. If an update comes out though generally you should wait until someone puts up a rooted build of the new update
We tend to get the rooted builds up very fast

Bootloops, lots and lots of bootloops...
If you feel comfortable flashing a stock recovery, you can usually run the ota, flash a custom recovery, and re-root. But, not always, and check first.

I've never used it so I wouldn't know lol thanks though i'll stay away for future reference
Also to the OP you should consider installing a 3rd party rom, like Viper ROM
or one of the other variants around Viper ROM is pretty sweet I run it myself and it still has sense

You probably have to Relock to flash it.
Be sure to backup OFF the phone before doing anything.
I backed up with TWRP, copied it off the phone (which I had), I relocked (one ADB command), ran RUU (longest step), took OTA, re-unlocked (just reflash unlock file with ADB), reflashed TWRP, copied backup back on to phone and restored.
PITA but pretty safe and robust.

Nope, the process I describe above works without re-lock. Plus, when you restored your Nandroid, you likely restored the .7 software. I'd check if were you.

I described one way to robustly get the OTA firmware. After restore you just "Dirty" flash any .10 ROM
Or just restore DATA if you want stock.
I have a similar question. I am thinking about rooting my Sprint HTC One, so that I can install apps that require root. I don't mind the stock ROM and I would like to receive OTA updates. If I root my HTC One, will I continue to receive OTA updates?

[Q] Android 43 system update not working

I have a HTC One with the Google Edition ROM installed. I have changed my CID to GOOGL001 also. I'm currently running Android 4.2.2 and today i got a notification saying that the system update has been downloaded and click here to install, the phone rebooted and it took me to the recovery screen and nothing happened... Booted the phone back up and i still had Android 4.2.2 installed and now when i check for a system update it says my system is up to date :S Why has this happened and how do i get the 4.3 update to work?
Thanks in advance
unless you've gone through the conversion process and have fully converted to Google edition, OTA updates will not work.

There's a procedure to completely convert your phone to the Google Edition complete with OTA. It requires S-off and a decent amount of Android experience.
But yes, you're going to have to flash a 4.3 ROM

[Q] Updates

Hi,
I wanted to ask whether I will get the official OTA update if my bootloader says *TAMPERED*.
Also, what else could prevent me form getting the updates? I am running this ROM.
Thanks for your time.

Yes you will get the official update but you need to have the stock recovery installed, so when the update comes out flash the stock recovery using fastboot, do the OTA update and then reflash TWRP or CWM and thats it.
You'll need to lock your bootloader aswell.

Actually No you don't have to as long as you have the stock odexed ROM and the stock recovery you can do the OTA!
You can check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306880

Didn't work for me when I went back to stock, OTA failed but worked after I'd relocked my bootloader.

That's weird, it worked for me when I updated to 1.24.401.8 last week!
Thanks for the answers. My ROM should be de-odexed. That is a problem I presume?

It's needs to be the stock ROM in stock form, without modification, otherwise the OTA will probably fail.
Retested this morning, update downloads, goes to install but stops part way through and shows the red triange with exclamation point ... That's on a stock, odexed ROM with stock recovery.
Several times I have run ruu on pc to go back to 4.1.2 using 1.28.401.6 ruu, then with S off and super cid and unlocked bootloader have successfully received and installed Ota updates up to an including 2.224.401.8
I am convinced that ota are no problem with unlocked bootloader.
Don't know if s off effects this

What will an update do?

HTC One M8 - I rooted my phone, installed TWRP, S-OFF, and Titanium Backup to get rid of bloatware.
Let's say an update comes through some day from HTC for something.. should I accept it? Or what about if one day we get a newer version of Android update such as 4.5 Lollipop or whatever the next is going to be? Should I accept it?
I will have to re-root/s-off after that or what?
If you are rooted and S-OFF you should never take an OTA update this could brick your phone or damage it. Just for personal knowledge, with my rooted/S-off M8 I accidentally took an OTA update and without reading said yes to the install. My phone restarted but would not load the updater, and then powered itself off. I dodged a bullet on that one. Anyway if you are worried about getting updates the developers here at XDA usually have rooted, S-OFF safe, ROMs that can be flashed in TWRP which give you all the goodies while maintaining your root/s-off status.

My bootloader's unlocked and I'm S-Off. I took the OTA from the settings option on the Harman/Kardon RUU and never bricked.
OP, your bootloader and S-Off status will be unchanged when taking an OTA. However, I think most people would tell you to just flash the OTA in stock recovery or fastboot.
Since you are s-off there is never a need to take an OTA.

To add, it should not brick you phone with s-off.
you probably have to reinstall recovery and reflash a rooted rom.
Can anyone help explain this to me? I believe I had took the OTA update(with the Extreme Power Saver) but then I rooted/s-offed with no problem...In this case, was there anything I needed to do? I just assumed everything was working so it was ok.

I did the same. All you need to do now is install a custom recovery, but it's not required. You can still still run Stock Rooted like you are now and take all OTA's if you don't want to run a custom ROM. Just remember: OTAs and RUUs won't change your S-Off status.

Thanks for clarifying! :highfive: TWRP was installed along with the root so I guess I'm set to go!
Thanks. I'm happily running ViperROM 1.6.0 and it works great. You're right. No need to take OTA updates. Uses a little more battery than stock, but no problem. I just worry if I take a trip somewhere because I have no car charger.

HTC One M8 Android 4.4.4 rooted update to android 5.0

I have a normal edition Sprint HTC One M8 that is rooted with android version 4.4.4. I am still on the stock ROM. Whenever I got the phone, about 2-3 weeks ago, I wasn't aware that 5.0 was being released to the M8. So I updated to 4.4.4 through the OTA update and rooted. After rooting the system update popped up prompting me to update to version 5.0.
Now my question, is there an official rooted stock 5.0 ROM yet? I can't find it anywhere.
If there isn't, how do I go about updating to 5.0 from rooted 4.4.4?
Thanks,
Shawn
More info: this isn't the first time I've rooted phones. I've had an HTC EVO 4G and a Samsung Galaxy S3. This is just the first time I've had stuff not go as planned.
I tried to get S-OFF, however since "firewater" no longer works, and the only other way is SunShine, I can live with S-ON.

In order to take the OTA you need a stock rom (no modifications to system) and stock recovery.
Or option 2 is you can run the latest RUU

How would I go back to stock recovery and remove root?
Same question for RUU. I've only used RUU once on my EVO 4G to reset everything. Not sure if the process is the same for the One M8 or where I'd start lol

You flash stock recovery the same way you flash twrp, root should be ok I've never done an OTA I've always been s-off.
The rom you are on should also be ok unless you removed a bunch of bloat.
The RUU will wipe your device...back up anything important to your PC.
Side note: Every time there is an update and you like custom roms most require the firmware to be updated in order for them to work properly.
Updating firmware with s-off only takes a couple minutes and a lot less hassle then if you are s-on... so I would recommend biting the bullet and using Sunshine if at all possible.

I plan on staying with the stock ROM, just rooted so I'm gonna skip S-OFF. Never had an issue with it being on on my EVO (I flashed dozens of ROMs and stuff on it).
I'm ok with RUU wiping everything. I purposely haven't put much personal data on the phone cause I knew I'd be wiping within the next few weeks.
I'm gonna go the RUU method as everything will be fresh and unmodified.
Thanks for your help!
